I really want to do this mod. I have a beat up blue label that would be cool to cut up and paint.

Seam fixing will come with time -- It's big because of a not-quite-right-angle table saw blade.  I've considered trying to fill it with some kind of putty...

Next step is to do a proper bolt mod to get it to stay together, but I don't have bolts.

Controller doesn't fit anymore either, so I'll replace with a custom one that probably talks USB.

Also, I haven't seen anybody else do this.  Got a link to the previous, Demik?

Great work!  If only Unicomp would include a free machete with their keyboards.

Nice hack!

Coincidentally I also am hacking my M. This was my stealth project for April fool :)
Case mod was most difficult part of this project. I failed on cutting case and it looks badly :(

ClickClack's Model M micro is great looking. Detail of this keyboard is unknown. Did you see it?

Talis' mod. His work on case is great.

I'd gladly saw the Unicomp 102 customiser review sample I have, in half, if it was in bad condition (and were it mine). I think that charging people £94+ for a replica is downright cheeky. I just can't see how *anyone* can justify that extortionate price. The chancellor, Unicomp, the reseller and Customs & Excise can ALL whistle; they ain't getting my money, when I can buy TWO genuine Model M's with detachable SDL to PS/2 cables for £73 which includes shipping.

Economy of scale, bro. IBM/Lexmark made way more of these boards than Unicomp has, with more manufacturing clout than a small business like Unicomp.

Go buy as many old Model Ms as you want. Unicomp fills a void, and they do a good job of it.

I know I have a choice, and you're right. It's still too much though, and I'd resent so much for what amounts to a copy.

Why do you call it a copy? Part of the problem with their boards is that they're using the original tooling, so "copy" is a bit of a stretch. The problem with buying from the keyboardco is that you don't get to ask for a logo-less version, and they desperately need a decent logo – it completely ruins the aesthetics of their boards.

As for the mini keyboards, how hard would it be to add a Fn key in between ctrl and alt/alt gr? Obviously if you also want win and menu (I'm cheesed off that the Dell Latitude E5420 omits the menu key ... sux), fitting in Fn is going to be a tad tricky :)

Everything from a mass production line is a copy.

Seeing as he’s hysterical-to-unhinged on the subject of Unicomps, I would say that he does indeed think IBM hand-carved every single Model M.

Same here. I’d like to see how you fix up the gap.
