I haven't put my Gold Brobot on display yet. I think my colleague will flipped if they hear how much that cost.

Hey, at least its not as bad as trying to explain the purchase of a HHKB HG (Japan). I've heard those things are in the $4000 range.

Hmm, that reminds me to check and see how my friends will react to knowing I spent $200 on a HHKB. To be fair, it's not really secret that I'm a keyboard fanatic anyways, but I wonder if a "layman" could rationalize that purchase, or if it would just seem ridiculous.

Just got a new job last week and the keyboard is terrible. I'm going to do it. Will leave the novelty keys at home though.

Good idea ;)

Start with something basic, then add a maybe a custom Esc.  Then RGB modifiers.

Based on the reaction, if it is positive then move up to something more radical.

I just use beige PBT dyesubs now, with a Portal Esc.  When Toxic arrives, I might bring that in.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I have taken my blue and white WASD to work. I've added a nice blue Gas Mask on the Esc and some pac man aliens on the arrow keys.

I think the fact I work for a water company has meant nobody has mentioned anything yet, but my boss hasn't been in since I brought it in so she might go a bit ape**** and I may need to drop in on that grey GB :(
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I'm really lucky that my boss bought the keyboard I wanted because I was in ridiculous amounts of pain from typing on a crap keyboard.  His only concern was that other people would want an expensive keyboard when they saw mine.  Fortunately, it looks like a cheap POS.

I did geek out to a co-worker when I got my Truly Ergonomic for my home computer.  She was actually a little intrigued when I explained mechanical keyboards to her.

I also have the benefit of working IT in an industry that generally regards IT as very eccentric.

This is my rocket control center at work.  ;D

I've had more comments about the secondary screen than I had about the keyboard. Let's see if we can change that when I start putting some fancy keysets such as Macross on there.

So what adapter do you use on your screen? ;) Might be because it dosent click (if you have topre version). Keycaps would certanly help though.

The screen just uses a single usb cable. ;)
No extra adapter needed.

I have Clears on the Leopold and made it really quiet.

It's an Asus MB168+, a display link screen.
The FC660m is already pretty quiet on its own and with some sorbotane mats and o-rings it's chicklet level quiet.

If people care  then they are the weird ones, unless its against policy don't worry about it, they will probably give you **** cause your new anyway, (they are probably going to haze you anyway). Just take it in and use it unless a superior says you cant, I have never heard of a guy getting into trouble for bringing a keyboard to work.

What is weird is when the cost of the keyboard is more than the PC it is attached to, for example you brought a HHKB with 3 skulls on it. They probably don't know it but it feels really weird!

I've brought my own keyboards to work just recently. I bought a Microsoft comfort 3000 to try as I wasn't getting on with the cheap and not very good Fujitsu ones we'd been given. They had no feedback to them. However, one morning I woke up and found my right wrist was sore from using the keypad so I decided to look for something better. Finally, I managed to find one of the work's old keyboards which had better feedback on them. I wasn't the only one struggling as another colleague was, too.

Personally, I think if work get weird about you bringing in your own keyboard, then they have the problem, not you. You're the one who has to work there and if you are in pain or having issues with the keyboard they give you, then you're more than entitled to change it.

In our office, we all have different set ups. Whatever suits you, really. One work colleague has a mini keyboard with a larger mouse, another has a normal sized keyboard with a different mouse, because he suffers with RSI. I've seen split keyboards and the trackpads used. In short, anything which works, doesn't cause pain and doesn't involve uploading a driver to the computer.

Yeah, I absolutely would. After you get a little more established at the work place you should try to get the company to purchase one for you. (which is what I did) Most companies want their workers to be comfortable while working. I mean you sit behind this keyboard 8-10 + hours a day.

I have no problems buying my own for work if I need to and work won't pay out for the one I want or prefer. It's about comfort and responsibility. Most of our lot and that includes management are so computer up savvy, they wouldn't know USB from PS/2 or how to connect a keyboard. I do. Been doing it for many years. Connected mice and numerous keyboards. No-one really bats an eyelid.

Unfortunately my work won't allow me to bring my own keyboard, even if I bought it. Probably they would allow it for medical reasons, but for that I will have to get attest from my doc or something like that. Maybe I can convey my boss, but I think he and others will think my keyboard would install something on the computer and stuff like that.  :'( Especially if there is no usb hub, damn those fools ^^

I'd say most of the doctors don't even know what a mech board is and why they should give you a note for using it or rather why and for what they should even give out a notice for using it. I never asked my doc about this, but I just guess this'll be his reaction. Surely there are others who give it to you because they don't know, but I won't be searching for one if I won't get it from my doc.

I have a cherry blue keyboard that I love, but if I brought it in to work I feel my coworkers would start to hate me more and more each day at the clicking sounds. I also type at about 140 WPM, so when I'm actually doing work my desk will probably sound like rapid gunfire.

Please remember to be respectful to friends and coworkers if you bring your own keyboard!

I switch between an aluminum Poker II with reds and a Filco MJ2 full with reds. I work in an open office and there's enough general typing/misc noises to not have it be a nuisance.

i used blues at the office for years with o-rings. no complaints from my phone heavy coworkers.  but i think that was because i used o-rings and POM caps.   now i am using stock clears with SA caps and my coworkers compliment the sounds that come from my dox. they like it.

Me too. The toys, Claptrap, Calculon, and Nerf guns usually distract people. But when I had my Miami set on my board? That dominated the conversation.

A-Wing and Minecraft Lego models on my desk. The most random people want to play with them.

I've got Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Master Chief, Voltron, Alexstrasza, Caitlyn, Riven's Sword, Sailor Moon, Wheatley, Sonic, a mini light saber, a Frost Wyrm Whelpling and a couple of Murlocs on my desk, right next to my D3:RoS CE mousepad.

I took most of my good stuff home when I got a display curio. ^_^

The toys, Claptrap, Calculon, and Nerf guns

Let's see. Some Transformers. Some 3D printed stuff like a titanium ball. A Hot Wheel Mars Rover. A Lego Technics racecar. Lego Darth Maul minifig in a fitted with a rifle for some reason. Lego Viking minifig with weapons. Lego WW2 Minifig with a BAR and M4. Lego Spongebob and Patrick dressed as Mermaid Man and Barnacleboy in the Invisible Boat Mobile. Erector set plane. In addition to the stuff above hehe.

And all my work peripherals are on an AK-47 Tekmat :D.

I need to invest in a Nerf Basketball hoop.

I haven't been at my new job all that long to have unpacked my desk goodies, but I have a sonic screwdriver, doctor who lunch box, various lego bits, plush Eeyore, and a bunch of hotwheels. I've been thinking about bringing my ultrasaber to work too, but I'd also like to have that at home to play with.

I teach in the math department of a public community college and we are not exactly rich. But, I bet one could *find* a model M if you looked in some of the sub-basements and steam tunnels on our grand old campus. Ha Ha! I am planning on buying a keyboard for work soon. But, I'm giving my first purchase some time so I can decide what I might want to change.
