In Praise Of The Brother HL-3070CW Color Laser Printer

I picked up the Samsung CLP-315w for my mum for Christmas. She's studying at the minute and her inkjet was costing her a fortune. I'm excited to see how it performs. If it gets a year between refills she'll be happy. Even if it costs £100 for a black and colour refill pack it's still cheaper than what she's paying collectively now in inkjet cartridges for her HP.

Can I praise the Brother HL-2170W here? :hail: :HL-2170W:

Mine made a one-way trip to Brazil and has seen a lot of use. Nice crisp fonts, and the toner is a great price. Wireless works great too.

What's a toner cartridge run in a retail store for that (Genuine Brother brand)?
There are lots of generic brands on fleabay for about $20-25 (for my model at least). Drums aren't bad either.

Edit: I just noticed that Ripster's is color. That would be a lot more. Still a great value though compared to inkjets of course.

Once I evolve to the point that I actually need to print things on a regular basis, I will obtain my own Laser printer.  Then I will officially have a full-fledged computer lab in my basement.  A lab is not complete without a laser printer...

I had a Laserjet 4l for like a dozen years before it finally died.  ItlnStln's is still running I believe.

Inkjets I find cheaper to trash and buy at Costco than buy refills.

They don't make those lasers like they used to... I think there is 5l or 6l still in working condition, only issue is the centronics, which aren't too available on modern laptops and computers...
So I should add something useless here yes? Ok, ok...

Centronics?  You mean the parallel port.  Wasn't that the one next to the Serial Port and PS/2 port?

I remember the first Laser Printers at Stanford.  Now THAT was something.

I think it pre-dates PS/2... Still, I heard there is adapters at dx...

My epson r200 + CIS held up really well for a few years until I forgot to schedule some print tasks before I went on vacation (stupid printhead carts clog up and dry out remarkably fast).  Was quite a workhorse though while it lasted.

Nowadays I just use some cheap HP laser.  They all just seem like a necessary evil to me.

But that didn't let you choose your font; it was hardly any more flexible than a plain old line printer.

Where I went, our first laser printer was the Xerox 9700. Now, that one could do the same things that modern-day laser printers could do, printing in proportional spacing and everything!

What is the difference between Brother Color laser HL-4040CN, HL-4070CDW, HL-3070CW

The D version stands for duplex..
The W version stands for wireless and ethernet
The C stands for Color
The N Stands for Ethernet

besides speed differences..
besides toner capacity

thanks

I've always had good luck with Brothers and Canons.  We printed out our Christmas cards on a Canon wireless all-in-one inkjet this year with similar results to ripster's - no jams and outstanding print quality.

HP's have been nothing but **** for about ten years now.  The hardware sucks, the software sucks, and the hardware sucks.  Also, the software sucks.  The only reason people buy them anymore is the name, and that can't keep them going forever.

You did well.  I bought my 4L in 1994 and it was dead by 2001.

I have both an inkjet printer and a laser printer (neither of which were made in the 21st century) and they both work great. My inkjet's a Canon Bubble Jet BJ-200ex from 1994 and my laser's a GCC Elite 12/1200 from 1998-ish. New ink cartridges for the Canon are about $10, and a gallon of ink for it (I just refill them) is $40. Toner for my GCC is about $60 and can print about 12,000 pages.

There's also an old Hewlett-Packard LaserJet 5 at work that I might fix up if I have the time and energy.

I have a Samsung ML-1610. I think its about 5 years old now. B&W only, no color. It has never jammed on me. I think I spent about 100 dollars to buy it at the time, maybe a little less. A toner cartridge can last almost a year for me too.

Much nicer than an ink jet IMHO.

I just picked up a B/W brother.

You can also put a piece of a tape over the toner's sensor and the printer wont know that it's low.

Also, don't buy Brother brand toners, you'll pay a ton more.

Wow, this thread feels like cosmic convergence.  I discovered Geekhack while searching for Focus keyboards (I'm typing this on my FK-2001 black), and noticed this thread because yesterday I was looking at specs on the Brother HL-3070CW.  Last night I was helping a friend revive his LaserJet 4L with a new Centronics->USB cable.  Very strange.

Anyway, nice board, Rip.  I've been a fan of Focus and mechanical keyboards since the late '80s.  I still have the box mine came in--someday I might think about selling it to a collector, but I seriously doubt it.  Nothing types like this.
