"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

That lighter blue and yellow looks great!

Somehow better than the darker blue in Tai Hao with yellow.

I've wanted a different wrist rest for a while now, and in particular, I love different natural wood grains.  So I started looking on-line and locally and ended up finding a woodworking shop in the area where I picked up a piece of faded padauk wood.  After some sanding and tung oiling, I ended up with this:

43882-0 43884-1 43886-2

I love how silky it feels and want to get more now--something light colored and maybe a purpleheart or something exotic!  Too bad I couldn't show the 3-D glowy appearance of this wood.  Not like curly maple, but a bit of that.  I wish I had tools to do a proper front slant, like on a wooden Filco wrist rest, but it's pretty comfortable as is already.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen padauk that color before.  It's always orange, red, or faded to a rust-ish color when I've seen it.  I don't think I've seen it with figuring either. Are you sure it's padauk?  In either case, it is sexy.

Yeah it is.  They had it in vibrant red and orange too, but this particular piece was near a window for a while, very faded.  It had a proper label sticker on it and everything.  They were surprised by it too, but it looked like nothing else they sold and did look like padauk, just faded.  I liked it a lot, because it's neutral light wood with darker reddish and brown veins in it.  Overall a neutral-to-cool color, but my camera has some color accuracy problems ;(  The 3rd photograph is too dark and yellow.

That's pretty awesome.  After enlarging the photo, yeah, I can see it's padauk.  You can see the little pock marks in the wood that padauk gets that add character to the wood and can't really be sanded away.  I wonder if it was closer to heartwood or something and that's why it has that coloration.  I know some of the stuff I've bought has light brown streaks running in it on the edge from heartwood.

You really did pick a nice piece though.

Thank you--I had a stack of different ones when I was at the shop, couldn't decide which to pick... but this one was definite buy.  It was slightly curved unlike others, so I had to straighten it under pressure after steaming.  Mostly the indecision came from the fact that the color changes after oiling, and I didn't have a good feel for how much my other pieces would change.  It's why I went with tung oil instead of linseed oil.  I almost got some purpleheart, but was discouraged by the fact that it loses its violet/purple appearance over time and turns reddish.  Although my room gets very little sunlight, so I might try it out.

Yeah, I avoid BLO and try to use Danish oil that's a mixture of true Tung oil and varnish.  Many of them claim to be tung, but aren't.  A nice wax finish can also keep the color the same.  There are actually some waxes that have UV protection in them to help keep the wood the same color.  As long as you regularly wax it, it should be relatively safe outside of color shifts from oxidation.

Had to go look at my tung oil bottle!  It's from Rockler (that's the shop in my area), says 100% pure organic tung oil.  Phew.  Only thing I didn't do right is mix it with mineral spirits for the initial application.  Is that okay?  The finish still feels great and very silky.  I'll look into those UV protection waxes.  At the moment, I already have a Meguiar's Gold Class liquid Carnauba Plus wax--don't see UV protection anywhere, but googling it seems like carnauba should be good for that.  Is that usable on wood?

That's more than fine.  Mineral spirits just help it penetrate a little deeper and dry faster, but requires you do more coats.

I know that the Meguiar's show car finish is popular with some wood workers, I don't know about the one you said.  Some are better for wood than others.

It's probably because the Filco emblem looks gold.  Camo emblem is a bronze-gold tone.

and they charge more for it, cmon!

In this thread I learned that I want to live where Photoelectric lives. Awesome woodshop to make woodrests? Check. Friendly people who rebend keyboards? Check. Place that will let you anodize your own keyboard? Check.

I've wanted a different wrist rest for a while now, and in particular, I love different natural wood grains.  So I started looking on-line and locally and ended up finding a woodworking shop in the area where I picked up a piece of faded padauk wood.  After some sanding and tung oiling, I ended up with this:

I love how silky it feels and want to get more now--something light colored and maybe a purpleheart or something exotic!  Too bad I couldn't show the 3-D glowy appearance of this wood.  Not like curly maple, but a bit of that.  I wish I had tools to do a proper front slant, like on a wooden Filco wrist rest, but it's pretty comfortable as is already.

In this thread I learned that I want to live where Photoelectric lives. Awesome woodshop to make woodrests? Check. Friendly people who rebend keyboards? Check. Place that will let you anodize your own keyboard? Check.

Don't forget painting on the street corner :P

You should check if this place has a branch near you:
http://www.rockler.com/wood
(look at the domestic lumber and exotic lumber sections.  3/4" height seems perfect for most keyboards, 1/2" for some very flat ones.  You'll be adding a couple millimeters at the bottom for feet/padding).

The 24" x 3" x 3/4" sizes are precut and sold in stores, or you can order them on-line.  They can shorten to 14" or whatever you specify too.  You can also purchase on-line.

Re: painting...  I'm sure I could do that anywhere >.>  As long as my neighbors don't chase me off.

SHARPIE!

Needs some tiger striping demik, maybe some melted crayon for accent marks.

In this thread I learned that I want to live where Photoelectric lives. Awesome woodshop to make woodrests? Check. Friendly people who rebend keyboards? Check. Place that will let you anodize your own keyboard? Check.

Sadly, Rockler tends to be overpriced.  Not as bad as Woodcraft is, but Rockler is still way more expensive than my other local exotic and domestic wood suppliers.  I'm super jealous of the anodizing though.  Maybe I need to talk to some people I know who do fabrication...

Nope. Today I learned you're the GeekHacker I want to live up to. I too will bring my mods to the people one day and solder in the streets. :D

I'm not even joking, you're awesome
