How do you guys store your keycap sets?
« on: Sat, 28 June 2014, 14:41:24 »
With more and more sets coming my way as group buys finally are produced and shipped, I am finding myself at loss for an effective way to store sets that I am not currently using, especially considering I like to combine sets (using red on white and white on red combined TaiHao at the moment). How do you guys do it? I am especially afraid of losing just one keycap here or there

My storage system consists of zip bags as well, with some name on the set bag to help identify them such as Cherry FR, or somesuch and all the novelty/non full set keys just get all mixed together. Then all the bags go in boxes I have saved from my Diesel jeans orders of which I have some boxes seperated by key materials and US or 'foreign' layouts.

CPTBadAss turned me onto Amac Boxes from the Container Store and those have worked out the best for me.

He also has a nice photo here of what his collection used to look like.

Not as organized as yuiop but it's basically the same: I've got a huge transparent box (way bigger than the ones in the picture) in which I put lots of tiny boxes with all my keycaps.

Picked up a few of those from EK when I visited, really great for storing full sets. Also have some of those Amac boxes CPT was talking about, from the Container Store.

As an FYI, I just ran into these on keypop.net: http://www.keypop.net/product/keycap-display-case

I have no idea if they're any good, but they look pretty decent, so I might give these cases a try. I purchased a couple of those EK cases, but I don't like the fact that they require me popping the keys onto stem-holders. Called me paranoid, but I just want as little possibility for the plastic to change shape as possible.

My current collection is still stored like that except I have multiple of those hobby boxes and those amac boxes now. And another plastic bin/container for random stuff I've accumulated like shrink wrap.

Here's how I store my key cap sets.

As stated previously, CPTBadAss turned me on to the Amac Boxes at the container store. The smaller one (#60380) is for 10-keys and the taller one (60420) fits a full set of alphas and modifiers and includes spacebars. Often times, I'll use multiple large boxes for sets that have lots of kits.

If you start getting a lot of sets, then you'll probably want to box up your boxes. For that, I use the Men's Shoebox, which also comes from the Container store. These stack as well.

Below are a few shots to better illustrate:

My good keys are in zip-lock bags in a cardboard box. The cardboard box was the packaging of a MacBook pro, so good quality and opens like a briefcase.

Small sets and random novelties in little ziplock bags with cardboard backing+filler.  Full sets in ziplock bags in a box.

I store them in a zip bag and throw them into a drawer. But then again I only have two original Cherry sets and don't need one place to store them yet. I also store my few novelty keys in a cardboardbox thats inside a metal box with all my lube, switches and tools.

Just a suggestion - don't do it this way.

I have tried this approach on many occasions - putting a reference number on each box (bag, packet, network switch port, DVD spindle, audi cassette box, ...) and keeping the list of contents somewhere else (book, database, spreadsheet, printed sheet of paper, hand-written sheet of paper ...) and each time the two become separated or out of date, or the stickers fall off.

I would like to get a hold of a bunch of the kind of holders that come with Cherry KC104

Need winkeyless version though.

Someone really ought to do a group buy and make these really cheap. Like 10 for $20. It's much easier and better than keeping in zip lock bags all jumbled up.

Very limited in what types of sets you can store (ANSI standard is probably most popular, yet hardly comprehensive at all for tsangan sets and additional custom sets).

The specialized cardboard boxes would be really nice as a GB as they have a lot more flexibility.

So, I bought my daughters a set of those crazy rubber bands that girls these days love - they are called Loom bands. And they come in this tiny little 12-tiny compartments that just fits a key cap. I'm not urging my little girl to quickly finish up her loom band so her old man can confiscate the box for his artisan caps! I'm even tempted to buy the loom bands, throw those bands away just to keep the box!

Nice box. That gave me an idea. We get a lot of packages now a days why not simply use the styrofoam boxes to make such slots and store them? For more protection there is always bubble wrap lying around to keep them safe.

They are nice, but there is just too much waste space. A simple plastic bag in a box works.

it's alot easier to doublecheck that you're not missing keys.

and the keys don't scratch each other like they can when they're loose in plastic bags.
