After seeing this thread I thought it would be relaxing (therapeutic perhaps) to throw together an older Lego Architecture collection kit.
Made it look like an old/vintage magazine clipping since that's how I remember this building for some odd reason. I've got the Guggenheim Museum one sitting around somewhere too that I should throw together. They have just been sitting in boxes for years along with a number of other Lego kits.

It's very relaxing to do something this mindless every once in a while. It's the 3D equivalent of painting by number except you end up with something that fewer people are repulsed by. Something about white noise busy work that lets your mind move in different yet useful directions.

For those that don't know, it's a house called Fallingwater and the architect was Frank Lloyd Wright.
This model is kinda neat in that you can remove the small roof and each floor. They slide easily and thoughtfully apart. Or you can remove the whole building as one unit. If you know nothing about the original house, I highly recommend looking it up. It's quite interesting.

Now for my next mindless trick...

That's awesome CC.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Literally one of my favourite pieces of architecture, something about having a constant stream of water flowing right through the house just seems so nice.

If I may I would have to recommend getting the Back to the future set, although I have not built it yet after having it a few months it does like very nice I just lack the space to put it wish I could have some of that tardis tech to make my room lager :I

Also on another note the Lego Movie sets are out currently which also look great, as well as the minifigure line, and although it may seem odd do sign up the the free lego magazine as they often give away free things to people who visit the lego stores :)

This is my absolute favorite Architecture set and it'll be the first one I get for sure.  I went and saw the house a few years back and it's one of my favorite buildings ever.  It just feels so...right.  I would love to have a house even half as cool as Fallingwater.  Thanks for sharing, CC.

You and I are on the same wavelength :) Got it yesterday, didn't think it was going to come to South Africa but it finally arrived.

Would love the Simpsons as well but don't know if I am going to able to part with the cash when the time comes, even the BTTF set was $53 here ($35 in the US).

You wouldn't pay $10 a month to come here?

I mean its a really good idea it probably keeps the kids away.

Edit: Also..like vun said below...its a one time fee...

Yeah, but a one-time fee when you sign up is a way better solution. Won't bring in as much cash, but will bring more people, but still keep a lot of kids and trolls at bay. Seems to work for SA.

Mandatory purchase of one or two GH keycaps per month would suffice.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

in my experience, my local stores (Toys-R-Us/Wal-Mart/Target) all have sets listed $5-$15 above MSRP.

I buy from shop.lego.com, amazon.com, and ebay.com

lego will have every set at MSRP, but a lot are usually OOS, amazon will not have many if any sets at MSRP, but the Prime shipping is nice, and eBay has everything from old, retired, overpriced sets, to "new damaged boxes" for 60% MSRP.

The one I bought was from Amazon and it was 10 dollars below MSRP, if I remember correctly.  So there is always the chance that Amazon will be below.

Amazon despises Canada. I've been looking at bricklink and ebay so I'll have to check them out.

Well, now that I saw this thread, I remembered I have a big tub of random Lego pieces. Built a car out of them, and now I feel the need to order the Y-Wing and A-Wing sets from Lego. Had an X-Wing, didn't like it.

Haha I just found this thread today thanks to SpamRay's sig.

Several years back, I used to collect a lot of sets+parts and build my own stuff.  It got to the point where I ran out of space to store the sets and parts, and where it became a real chore to keep parts sorted by type and color.  I haven't done anything lately except buy an occasional new Star Wars set.

Watch out if you are one that gets the collector's bug easily, though.  Collecting sets and parts is addictive and expensive.  Sets go out of print after a year or two, and if you build your own stuff, you'll be buying specific sets just for particular parts and colors.

If you are going to buy a lot, it really makes sense to join the LEGO VIP club.  For every $1 you spend (at lego.com or one of the lego stores), you get a point, for every 100 points, it's a $5 reward, and they now offer free shipping on anything over $75.

It's hard to find bargain lego.

Here are some of the custom things I made in the past:  http://www.thievery.org/gallery/?g=lego

^^^ these are really great!
Thanks, regack! :)

Amazon has discounts on sets once in awhile.  Technic 42008 Service Truck for 24% off now:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E3OPSF6
Also, Technic 42009 Mobile Crane is 21% off:
http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-Technic-42009-Mobile-Crane/dp/B00E3OPSJM
Back to the Future Delorean set is 20% off:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQC2FPM

I never really got into Technic sets, but many of them look pretty damned cool with a lot of actual working mechanisms.

I'm hooked.  This is seriously just amazing.  I've got a bunch more pictures taken while building, too, if anyone is interested.

I was gonna get one of those Lego architecture sets. How fun is it to build?

Well I certainly had a blast building it.  It comes with a really nice instruction booklet that gives some history of the architect and the building that's fun to read.  And I haven't built a Lego set in years, but it's basically just like any other set, it gives directions and you follow them.  Nice and relaxing.

About 3 hours?  I perhaps could have done it quicker but I was savoring it and taking lots of pictures.  :P

Collection has been steadily growing.. I've gotten pretty much all of the lower end star wars sets at my local stores... So now I'm heading into the big boys. Hilarious thing happened when I was buying a set at Wal-mart (it was an impulse buy). Picked out a ~$100 set and brought it up to the counter. Had a nice chat with the sales clerk and he was like "Oh cool, lego is awesome," and then he rung it in and said in the loudest possible way "but holy crap that **** is expensive!" I kind of gave him that "I know, but I can't help it" look in response. Anyway, pics will come when I end up transferring them from my camera.

I love Lego, but I used to mix up my sets as a kid. The best thing about Lego are the creative possibilities. Unfortunately that usually means you have to mix up sets to achieve new combos and after that restoring the original set is no longer possible.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

You could always look up the parts list and assemble the sets yourself.

That is more than a little bit of work.   :p
