Opinions on Razer?
« on: Sun, 10 October 2021, 03:18:56 »
I have a Death Adder which I pruchased about 5-6 years ago.  While I loved the ergonomic shape, 3 out of 4 of the buttons had double click issues, the mouse always felt hot, and it always felt rather cheap when being handled.  The top buttons felt mushy and the case kind of flexed when you squeeze.  I was wondering what the general opinion is currently for Razer products?  I've purchased several mice looking for a new favorite - Razer has several I am interested in the Mamba and Basilisk.  I do feel like they are slightly overpriced and a lot of people talk about how crappy the brand is.

My opinion was formed 5+ years ago, and I wrote them off so badly that I never saw reason to revisit... perhaps it's an outdated view now.

Lots of money spent on marketing low quality ****e to the younger gamer market. At the time I'd had a mouse fall apart, quickest of any I've ever owned over decades. Tried some of their demo boards and realised that even on the same board, switches felt totally inconsistent (I don't know if this was with early Kailh before they got their act together, or perhaps they had dived off on some even worse own-brand).

They raised an astronomical amount of money with an IPO several years ago, and what has changed? They still seem to make the same shoddy and tacky looking crap as they always did. They dived into phones (one phone?). The laptops have good reviews but given their other gear I wouldn't sink money into them.

Razers are scumbags:
 - Razer Gamma / GammaNow / SoftMiner. It is still active.
 - Superlative marketing, has been just borderline fraudulent in many cases
 - Their response to the driver-SYSTEM privileges fiasco. Every brand makes a bad/buggy product sooner or later. The difference is in how they handle the situation.
 - Did I mention Gamma/SoftMiner?

And it is also a good idea to avoid their hardware because of their Synapse app and other bloatware.

It seems sentiment has not changed much.  I'm not in a rush to support a company that is dishonest or at least not entirely forthcoming.  But with that said, their premium mice come- Mamba, Basilisk, and Naga, and DA come with very favorable reviews.  At the same time I don't want to deny myself a great mouse as it seems finding one that personally fits you can be quite a task.

I bought a death adder 10 years ago when I was still in school. I used it as my primary mouse for 5-7 years and then my gaming mouse for another 3.

Note: it was my only non-ball mouse for _years_. About a year ago, I bought a Model O for gaming and a MX Master 2 for general use. I'll never go back. I don't think Razer mice are so entirely awful, but there are certainly better options.

Between the build quality, company politics, and general driver software -- I don't see myself buying any of their products for a looong time.

Prices are meh at best, and their quality is very hit or miss it seems.

The biggest issue with Razer though, as mentioned is their software.
The mining thing was and still is inexcusable, it's been shown it can never do what they claim and if you know anything about mining that prospect only gets worse as time goes on.

They do make a good mousepad though if you ave a glass desk, my Sphex was amazing and changed how I looked at mouse pads.

I own this Razer product. It's been fantastic- reliable, and it does what it is designed to do without any fuss.

Are these short term product reviews, or aggregated long-term user reviews for reliability? Over the years, I have shifted away from using tech gadget reviews, or at least when I look at reviews nowadays it tends to be more for the negatives, partly to assess how critical and detailed the reviewer is, and partly to look for factors which could cause ownership annoyance.

I actually don't mind their mouse. I tried other brands but have always switches back to what I've tried and tested. I think it's because I like wireless mouse play and ever since I have their dock, it makes charging and swapping between wireless Razer mouse pretty straightforward.

I also got their latest black mat (Strider) and really like it over my old mats.

I don't like their keyboards tho.

Their mice are well-designed, but their quality is not great. They kind of strike me as a company similar to Mad Katz, but with premium pricing.

They used to have some interesting shapes (Imperator, Lachesis, Copperhead), but they've offered nothing of use in years, and the build quality of their classic shapes has only deteriorated. Their software, even ignoring all the crypto-worries, is hot garbage compared to the competition.

Really, the only new-ish Razer product you should even consider in 2022 is a Lachesis if you've got big hands, for anything else there are a bunch of better options.

I've owned Razer products since I've had my very first PC. My opinion on their products now is that they make good mice while there may be some better options available depending on sales and users' needs. I do not care for their other products as they seem to be charging more of a premium price tag nowadays. I've owned Razer and Corsair headsets in the past... They cannot compare to my Beyerdynamic setup currently.

I have a 2020 15 inch model of their razer blade series. Its ok, just about the same as any other laptop of a similar form factor. Nothing really great or bad about it. other than having to replace the cooling fans already.

I use the wireless version of the Razer Deathadder just due to the Model D wireless not being a thing yet. (I recently switched to an under desk drawer for my keyboard/mouse for ergonomic reasons) no specific complaints or praise, to me its just a mouse and I can do the same things to any mouse even a mouse with no software for it with some autohotkey scripts.

Every gaming laptop I've owned has had horrid cooling. You mentioned you had to replace the fans, was it bad stock?

The laptops have been plagued with reliability issues.
The first ones had a fuse or something blow all the time because it barely (if that) was within spec, Louis Rossman covered this one and was shocked how it was built.
LinusTechTips staff had several later models (pre 2020 ?), all failed over time and were entirely phased out as they died despite the staff loving them. I believe they refused to go back due to the experience.

The only Razer product I would buy (and re-buy) is the Razer Viper Mini. Great mouse at a fantastic price. Maybe the Bungee but I think you could literally pick any bungee and be fine. Would never consider their other products beside mice, though.

Razer makes some ok products, butt tthe prices are skewed to high for the quality you get.  Same can be said about the Glorious mice, most have QC issues but some aren't complete deal breakers for me.  Also Glorious has lost my business the minute they started cloning caps without giving credit to the original person who designed the colorways.  In the end Logitech has retained my business over the years and their customer support has always treated me right.

I had two Razer Pro Click mice in the past - each of them died after around 3-4 months, so I stopped buying this crap.
Software is rubbish.
I will never buy Razer again.
