My order up for sale then, this is what I've got so far. I selected raw titanium finish, but this can probably still be changed at this stage?

Notched top plate upgrade
Standard kit (no standard top plate)
Extra PCB
Teensy
Shipping

Total $206

Looks like a nice kit. How difficult would it be for someone with no soldering skills to learn?

My first experence with soldering was building an ergodox, which looks a lot harder than this, and what made that possible with very basic tools was this guide - https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guide-excellent-soldering/tools  It's really not hard so long as you go carefully and follow the directions which I trust are coming presently from JD or someone.

on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is picking one's nose and 10 is building a jet fighter from scratch, i'd say it's like a 2 or 3 :P

Hey mkawa, I bought an extra PCB for my friend, but he's just bought the Ctrl.Alt JD40 kit. Is it possible to get a refund on just the PCB?

Not to be rude, but I think you guys who are.asking about refunds miss the entire point of a charity fundraiser project.

From the OP:

Quote
100% of profits from this project will be donated to the Nathan J Walter foundation, a scholarship trust set up by the family of Nathan Walter aka Smallfry to support eagle scout community service projects. The first such project was a set of benches overlooking a lake, built by one of Nathan's pack-mates and friends, with a dedication to Nathan etched on the benches.

We miss you Smallfry.

Besides, there are a finite number of PCBs. $20 is still $20 to the foundation, though, so I'd rather the person paying that $20 would use what they get in return.

Got em here: http://techkeys.us/collections/accessories/products/clear-mx-switch-cover

Kinda pricey at 50 cents each but since I only needed 40 I didnt mind.

One of the vendors on these forums is starting a new GB for clear tops though, cant remember which one right now.

Hello, so I am completely newb to this keyboard building and have level 0 soldering skills, but I want to try.. I really do!

So please help me out with some understanding, but before I ask too many questions, is this group buy still joinable?

Is there a page where I can read up on more stuff, like "removable switch plate" that someone mentioned on the first page, what does that mean?

there are 7 units left, so you can still join the buy.

the notched plates allow you do remove the tops of the switches for modification of the switch internals after you can soldered the switches into the pcb and mounted them in the plate. more information in "simple questions simple answers"!

Yes, you can still order.

If you want to get a lot of information about soldering, I recommend the Living Soldering Thread and just start from the beginning and work your way down.

To learn more about the plate cutouts, WFD did a nice video, which can be found here, that shows the cutouts in detail. He also has other videos that you might find helpful about soldering, such as his Custom phantom build.

Hope that helps!

Anyone who is getting their JD assembled by me will get sip sockets installed on the caps lock so that you can still replace the spring / stem on that swtich.

Sockets that you solder in through the bottom half of the switch. The top of the switch is then clipped on and the LED sits snugly in the socket, remaining easily removable so that the switch can still be opened.

This but I mod my sip sockets so you don't have to mod the switch itself.

eBay perhaps. Think there are some issues with not quite fitting in the switches though.
