The Amiga A would make more sense to me as an outline or in black tbh.

Looking good. Hey, I think the Nerdom keys would be more useful if they were all dark gray to go with mods. I cannot think in which cases they will be used matching with alphas, dont you think?

I just read this, and I agree.

I hope that Matt moves to reconsider the base colors for Nerdom, because as I wrote, the white colored would not match the mods. Thus, unless someone wants to replace an alpha key, or a fuction key there will be no place for any Nerdom's key.

'pretty much have the same thoughts as well. I feel like color options would make them more fitting; bit it'd be pretty difficult. Maybe we can come to some agreement to some base color (i.e. red keycap for an esc?).

I agree. The most obvious place I would use those caps is for my ESC.

If they were all the same color as the mods I would use more of them more often.

nerdom is mainly for the right hand modifiers and the function row (or maybe if you want to replace one letter or a number). If you want to use all of them you could put them in the function row and in that case you need 8 light gray and 7 dark gray. If you want to replace all top-right mods you'd need 9 dark gray when we have only 8. So I might add one. Also you could place Pi on P or Amiga A on A. I feel it's more flexible with both color options, but if you really can't stand them in light gray I'll replace them (note that I would have to remove the colored one).

homing keys are either dotted or scooped. We are going to use scoops.

Could you make the GH the same color as the mods?

I think I'm done my picks...mods on a TKL layout will be covered by a blank black set that I already have

QWERTY + ERGODOX CORE

Common Kit
Ergodoxian
Text Modifiers (not needed if alpha-colored ESC key can be found)
Text Pro Kit (need 1.5x BACKSPACE to replace capslock on Ergodox)

IMPROVEMENTS

Mono-Legend
Extra Homing Keys (the deep dish E might be a good replacement for the escape key)

STYLING

RGB Kit Blank
YO Kit

NOVELTY

Windowed
Nerdom
Multimedia Keys
ISO Enter

What is still missing for my personal layouts:

alpha colored ESC
2x vertical CTRL

^ so....so close to perfect :(
ALL zombros wanted:  dead or undead or dead-dead.

Ditto. I also would be in favour of a horizontal tab as part of the Ergodox set now that the other mods are separate. Curious what square frog's results would show.

And, if you split 1u and 1.25u into 2 sets? What I like about the revisited Nerdom is DT, GH, and the lil robot are all in dark gray, but I really do not see any use for the 1.25u.

Wait until you see what jdeblese has achieved with the data!

I've been crunching the numbers on squarefrog's collection of 39 layouts, and I've run them through a genetic algorithm-based optimizer. Results are interesting.

  • Coverage of the ergodoxian set as proposed is about 71-73% (depending on how you measure), standard deviation about 16% and minimum coverage 16%, with on average 11 extra keys. That's pretty good, I think.
  • Replacing the vertical 1.5x TAB for a second vertical 1.5x FN improves the coverage by a few percent.
  • Replacing the 2x vertical BACKSPACE with a 2x vertical SHIFT improves the coverage as well if you assume the 2x horizontal BACKSPACE from the base mods set is an acceptable substitute. This adds a key that's now completely missing, and reduces the average number of extra keys to 10.

I'm still tweaking the parameters of the simulation so maybe I'll find a better layout eventually, but it seems unlikely. You can get slight improvements by increasing the number of keys but you run into diminishing returns: about +1% average coverage per additional key, and you have to go as high as 25 keys before you start seeing a rise in the minimum % coverage.

I can post further details, but I think that's better done in another thread.

That was requested for ergodoxers who don't want to buy the base mod set. I'm buying the base mods anyway, so I'd rather add in keys that are otherwise missing.

How many ergodox users are there who won't buy the base mod set?

You mean the key sizes, right? And is that regardless of printing orientation?
I wouldn't change the sizes for the ergodoxian any more, as I think we can get good results with what we have. It's just the legend on those keys that we still need to look at.

EDIT: To clarify, if most ergodoxers will also buy the base mods set, then I'd say make the changes as above, but if most won't buy it then I'd suggest keeping it as it is.

ok. making everyone happy is impossible.

Everyone should buy at least the common kit AND one of the base mods to start with. I split the text and icon kits not because you can buy neither, but because you can choose one of them.

So I would agree on vertical TAB on the ergodoxian.

You mean the key sizes, right? And is that regardless of printing orientation?

Yes, only key sizes. So if you need more 1.5 or 2.0, ask now or never :) The legends can still change.

Actually, then I'd replace the TAB with a second vertical FN, and the BACKSPACE with a SHIFT, because those two keys are already available in the base mods whereas 1.5x FN is very common and 2x SHIFT is flat out missing.

are you sure about removing the 2x BACKSPACE?

The BACKSPACE in the base mods set is also 2x, right. It's the wrong orientation, but I think that's not as bad as completely lacking a key. I know I'm not the only one in this thread who's asked for a 2x SHIFT.

Ergodox is now $27 at 50 tier. I wouldn't add more keys.

I know...  suggestions? :(
On average you're only gonna be able to use half of the keys in the set on your layout. It'll cover on average three quarters of your layout together with the base mods and pro kit, however. We could also just drop a key or two.

Here are the two 19-key layouts I get out of my optimizer, but note that these suggest adding even *more* 2x keys:

¡Ay, caramba!

Well, if people are unhappy with the legends they can always buy two half hands. Like with the other specialty kits, if the legends don't meet MOQ they don't meet MOQ.

I suppose I could also just go see what the 25 most similar layouts are, base the set on just that and convince specifically those people to join this GB. ;)

I don't know if we should put all different keys (and you cover the missings with blanks) or if we should try to cover the highest % of layouts (like it is now as I understand)

True...

I would find it weird to have one mod legended and one blank. It gives me an idea, however: what if we take a very common legend, and exclude it completely so that *all* uses of that key are blank? Say, for instance, no FN keys, use blanks instead, and use the three keys freed up for other things?
