This group buy is now closed! Get ready to the 2nd round! More are coming!

So a guy who lives in the same city with me has some metal key caps here made by zinc.

There are two colors available as gold and silver. They are colored by plating (or called electroplating in English?).

Also two types of keys as blank and legends ones are available. The legends ones are made by laser.

All orders have been shipped out! I will keep taking orders until the 2nd round of this group buy since I still have some stock left.

UPDATE: I'm sorry to let you guys know that the R4 blank key caps, Arrow key sets and 37 blank key sets are not available this time because it's close to Chinese New Year and there's not enough workers in the factory. They might be available in the 2nd round of this group buy. Probably in the middle of Fabruary. Now only a few of the R4 blank ones were made and I will ship them to those who first made the payment.

UPDATE: Blank 1.25 Modifier Keys become available!

1) 37 Blank Silver Key Caps (37 keys included)  $82 Not in Stock.

2) 37 Blank Gold Key Caps (37 keys included)  $82 Not in Stock.

5) 37 Legends Gold Key Caps (37 keys included)  $85

6) WASD Key Caps (4 keys included) $15

7) Arrow Key Caps (4 keys included) $15 Not in Stock.

He made some modifiers but those are sold out. And now since it's closed to Chinese New Year, he can't make that many keycaps. So I think the modifiers should be available in the future.

Can you please clarify which keys are included in the 37-piece kit? By my count there are 33 keys in the center of the keyboard, leaving 4 keys to account for. This could be 4 arrow keys or it could be 1 Esc key and 3 blank "super" and "meta" keys. I'd like to know which so I can order correctly. Thanks! :)

No mentioning of poisoning?

When there was the lead-poisoning-through-keycaps discussion, people went mental.

And in recent years, zinc poisoning is way more common... especially ripster with his ripometer should know about the pennies made around 20-30 years ago.

Where are the people who nearly got a heartattack from thinking about keycaps made out of any metal?

I remember that discussion: as far as I'm concerned, the result of that was: you can't absorb enough through your fingers to make a difference.

Also, these are electroplated in another metal (silver? gold?) so you're not even touching zinc.

R4's are upper last function row(from ESC to Pause), the rest(WASD cluster) has different heights.

I'm getting ready to place an order for the key caps but I had a couple of questions, I'm hoping I can add a couple of additional key caps to the order.

 • Is the gold-plated R4 key cap available that has the "Filco" logo on it? Or the Apple logo?
 • Can you get any 1.25 keys to replace the "Windows" keys? I would like 3 of them in gold. If you can get them, how much are they so I can add it to the payment.

Would it be possible to get a 39 key kit for ISO keyboards?
It should consist of
12x R2 (qwert row)
12x R3 (asdfg row)
15x R4 (
EDIT: blank of course!

Sorry the R1, R2, and R3 keys are not individually for sale. Only R4(esc row) is available at this time.

Not so far, probably in the future they'll be available.

will this look good with backlit keyboards? i am certain the lights won't shine through them (just hoping somewhat it would :O )

@_@ I really have no idea. It's worth to give it a shot though. I'll put some of these metal keys on my Blackwidow to see how it looks.

R4's are upper last function row(from ESC to Pause), the rest(WASD cluster) has different heights.

The ~ through - (on the numpad) are all row 4 as well.

And is there anyone with a decent amount of experience with these metals? I'd like to find out how long these will last. Is there any chance that they will wear through the plating?
Check out my sales thread.

electroplating only coats maybe several hundred atoms thick (but it really depends on the process and how long the plating is). if ABS keys get shiny from the abrasion of typing, there's a really good chance it will also wear down the electroplating film. maybe OP might want to check to with the guy making it and ask him how long he plates these keys for.

That was my problem too. I was going for silver but changed my mind after looking at the pics. Then I wasn't sure if I wanted printed or non-printed.

I'll put them on my new Typenow w/ MX Blue in the classifieds. I'm gonna win it for $307 : )

electroplate is generally nickel or chromium

That's only true because electroplating is usually done for corrosion purposes, which nickel/chromium handle better than other metals (steel, etc.) Also, "cast iron" is really steel with a lot of carbon to make it euctectic. That's why it's brittle. It's often electroplated.

Since these are (apparantly) Zinc as a base, they can be electroplated for aesthetic purposes, and they can use many metals. For example, I have personally electroplated copper (which "might" have been from a US penny) onto Zinc (which "might" have been on a US dime). It didn't work out very well (due to the activity coefficients of the metals involved) but it did work. Also, Gold and platinum are often electroplated onto semi-metals for usage in SEM. (sputtering and/or evaporation are used for other, non conductive samples). IT could be anything, really.

You can electroplate a LOT more than 100 atoms with higher current, and more time (you're right though: it really depends on the process) and it's usually pretty this to save time and money (because it's usually done to keep the more active metal from corroding). Since this is aesthetic, it really could be anything.

That's one reason I was leery about this: I didn't want to wear through it, but depending on the composition of those outer metals, it really could be pretty resistant to finger wear.  I don't know for sure, but I'd expect it to be better than ABS. They do use metal keyboards for long-life. It'll still wear from you putting your fingers on it, but I'd expect it to be less.

At any rate, I'd not let worries of that impact my decision. Metal keycaps man!

yes, i said electroplating was several hundred atoms thick, but there will be a lot of variance because there is no detail to the electroplating process, how long it gets electroplated for, or the material used. it could be more than a couple thousand atoms thick, or it could be less than several hundred.

anodized aluminum would be more desirable, but it will cost more. don't get me wrong, the concept of metal keycaps is pure awesome, but if the plating is thin enough, the wearing on these will look even worst than ABS wear. at least with ABS, it just gets shiny, but with electroplated coat wearing out, the keys will be a totally different color in the middle.

I remember that discussion: as far as I'm concerned, the result of that was: you can't absorb enough through your fingers to make a difference.

Also, these are electroplated in another metal (silver? gold?) so you're not even touching zinc.

Right, actually you're not directly touching zinc because of the electroplated cover.

I don't suppose anyone would be willing to sell the 'S' 'B' '1'  or '4' or just some blanks from those rows on their set? I suppose I could just get a WASD, but that leaves something to be desired for numbers, and the B is important, we'll see.

a good question though, I don't see any in the reference pic, do the home row keys have any bump/etc?

well they just posted the retailer is =here=, i'm not trying to be cruel, just wondering what the usual lure to group buys are, as opposed to just buying independently, I think it's a fair question. I suppose with the double-shots and whatnot the idea is that the manufacturer is willing to put in the effort because it's all one big order of similar things? in this case is the Original Poster just going to order from TaoBao? or does he have a connection with the manufacturer? As someone who's new here It just confuses me a little that these things aren't explained in posts of people setting up orders.

this is a really neat order though, and I'm having some trouble finding the zerg symbol, but we'll see, my GF wants to order some TB stuff anyways, so we might just use a service and get it ourselves. I'd be really interested if someone could explain how and why these Group Orders work! thanks dudes

Well, in short, once I receive orders from this group buy, I talk to the retailer, and he conncet with the manufactor to make those key caps that have been ordered through this group buy. Not sure if you're clear with how this group buy work. Let me know.

Seeing as the protoss/terran/zerg keys are in this buy, what are the chances that we could get the SC2 league keycaps made up in the near future?

There is an awful lot of people waiting for these to be made who would probably be interested in a metal set..

UPDATE: I'm sorry to let you guys know that the R4 blank key caps, Arrow key sets and 37 blank key sets are not available this time because it's close to Chinese New Year and there's not enough workers in the factory. They might be available in the 2nd round of this group buy. Probably in the middle of February.

This got me EXCITED........so does it mean you will give a second chance for buyers to get, perhaps a FULL-104 keyset all made from Metal?

That would be the ultimate key-cap buy.  A full set to make any keyboard look fantastic.  Filco, Rosewill, Leopold, Cherry, and Das.

It's nice to get a small amount of metal keys, but if you are going to go the full-hog, I think I might wait for the full Silver/Gold mother-load.

Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but it's not gonna happen. :( The guy made some 104 keysets before, but it wasted too much time and he would never do that again.

Anyway, it's still possible to get a full 104 set made from metal but the price would be ridiculous. :P

86 normal keys from Korea, 18 modifier keys from langtou, it should at least costs about $1000. $_$  @_@  -___-

I like the keycaps alot, they were alot heavier then I thought so when I type the actuation force feels less (I use cherry browns). There also seems to be a minor ringing sound when I type from the keycaps and it is not because I am bottoming out (I have O-rings installed on all the keycaps). The keycaps are require a bit of force to push on. The only small qc issue I have is that on one or two of my keycaps there are blemishes where it doesnt seem like the gold plating was coated properly/evenly. I have attached pics of the overall caps and a closeup of what the blemish looks like. I don't regret purchasing them and they are definitely a nice addition to my keycap collection =).

Thanks for your pics and comments, ekw808! Will send you replacements for those key caps with spots by the end of this week.

So sorry about this issue, many gold sets have spots on the key caps because those didn't get electroplated properly. And they should be improved in the 2nd round of this group buy.

I haven't used it for a while but I think it's supposed to have a pass-through USB plug so you can still plug something else into your laptop. I got mine a few years ago from Circuit City liquidation sale.

I got mine in the mail yesterday and put them on. First impressions: they look very nice, I liked that they were individually bagged to keep them from being damaged during shipping. The gold color is great, and I think the previous customer shots might be a tad off in this department because mine didn't have such a yellow tint to them, they're much more like the photos in the OP. That said, I did have a few keys with serious blemishes in the finish. It looks like they were handled too soon after plating because there are fingerprint marks in the finish (pics below). Luckily these blemishes are on the sides of the keys so you don't notice them very easily when you have them on the keyboard. Still, if it's possible to get replacements for these keys, I would really appreciate it.

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 39234

One thing that surprised me a bit was just how snug these keys fit on the switches. Every key had to be pushed very firmly (and wiggled a bit) to get it to seat fully on the switch. I also noticed that they have two different styles of casting for the post mount. I didn't notice much difference between the two when installing them. The one that is cut all the way through might have been very slightly easier to push on than the other, but not by much. The difference is well within the tolerances I would expect for such an item.

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 39233

Here are some pics of the finished product. Overall, very happy.

Nice review. What major differences have you noticed in typing? What I'd really like to know is how heavy the keys are, and how that affects keystrokes.

Here are some pics of the finished product. Overall, very happy.

Did you polish your keycaps or something?  They look SUPER shiny compared to mine lol...

General question to everyone:  How can I polish them to look better?  What should I use?  I don't know the first thing about metal.

Nice review. What major differences have you noticed in typing? What I'd really like to know is how heavy the keys are, and how that affects keystrokes.

These are on Cherry Brown switches and the extra weight of the keys definitely makes the switches feel "lighter". I'd imagine they would be ideal on Clears, Blacks, or Greens. I don't mind the lightened feel, though. The tactile "bump" on the Browns does seem less pronounced, but it doesn't ruin the feel of the switches. I'm still waiting to see if I notice much difference in my fingertips after a full day of typing. I didn't notice much difference today, but I wouldn't call today quite a "full day" either, it was only about 6 hours worth of typing (on that keyboard). :) I thought I would miss the nubs on the F and J keys but it hasn't been much of a problem so far. I have caught myself looking down at the keys to make sure I'm lined up before but so far I have never been off. I think it's just psychological and I need to trust that my 20 years of touch-typing muscle memory will get my fingers in the right place on their own. :) Nothing but compliments from guys around the office. Still waiting for the groupies to come swooning, though. ;)

Thanks for this. Yeah, I would imagine that the weight would help counteract the force for needed to push the key down...depending on the type of plastic and the blend of the zinc it could be up to five times heavier than the plastic.

In the case of blues, it's almost like you need the force there, I'm not sure what typing with extra weight would feel like and honestly, I'm not sure that feeling is going to be good.

I've polished metal with Brasso before, works very well. But with electroplating for these specific caps, there's absolutely no info on the process or how thick the plating is, so I would use caution to polish, as it might take off enough of the color finish for the zinc to show.

Always use protection! You just need to cut a plastic bag into small pieces and put them on top of every switch prior to installing the caps.

Hmm. Might try that. But they fit on *really* tight. =P
Also... the supposed mark was really an already made indentation in the switch... *sigh* >_>
I didn't notice it on the other switches because, for some reason, the indentation is flipped the other way. Only noticed them (and the pre-made shape of them) when examining them with a flashlight.

You may have to leave the caps on permanently after you put them on. Or risk pulling out the whole switch :scared:

That could be because the cherry cruciform is not "square". The horizontal bar is thicker than the vertical portion.

I really don't see how this will work. The caps are tight enough already, there's no room to fit a plastic shim...I've done this on the Costar stabilizers for other key caps, because they were loose and the plastic makes it snug enough to fit correctly. That's exactly the opposite of what you need here.

Got my 37 silver legends yesterday.

Some thoughts:

Ordering:
My keys arrived 5 days after I ordered them. Ordered them on Saturday, went out on Monday, received on Wednesday.

Inspection:
There are a few small factory defects on a few of the keys, but nothing worth needing a replacement as seen earlier with some of the gold keys...perhaps it is limited to the the gold keys alone. All of the key faces are without blemishes. Each key was individually bagged in plastic.

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 39867

Seating the keys:
A few things on this. This was a bit tedious, if one is not careful it seems like it would be easy to break the stem off of the switch if you force the key down too hard...I never found out and hopefully I never will. There seems to be a bit more play in the keys.

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 39868
Sorry for the really crappy pic. It's a screen cap from a video camera, doesn't zoom in too well.

I was also confused that there are two different kinds of molds for the stems. I seated them from left to right top to bottom, and somewhere in the middle of doing this did I realize that it changed. The keys had the "B" stem but somewhere it changed to "A". I think around the "Z" key, I don't exactly remember. The "A" keys seemed to be harder to seat and don't seem quite as sturdy. Maybe there is a convention for doing this, if someone knows perhaps they could explain.

Action:
I haven't typed with them a whole lot yet, and I'm not sure how well these keys work with Cherry blues. They alter the action in a number of ways. For one, you can hear a metal "ting!" when you type. Not a really big deal to me. However, the classic "snap" you hear from blues is gone, and it is replaced with "thomp!" sound. More importantly, these keys somehow seem to "dampen" the feeling when you bottom out. Also, they are somewhat heavier than the factory keys. Consequently it doesn't take as much force to press, as the weight assists in force. This may or may not be a good thing. In my case it is somewhat not a good thing as I tend to make a lot of mistakes when I type and using blues has helped me correct this to a degree in that I am forced to type more accurately...it takes more effort to press a key and it's more of a subconscious thing where I make more of an effort to type better, even if my WPM falls off. These keys sort of defeat that. Overall, I don't really think it's the keys, but me.

I have to run, but I'll add more later. I at least wanted to get this up.

Also, props to feng for doing this. I paid up in January and had to back out once and feng promptly gave me a refund.

The electroplating didn't really take on two of my keys, the m key and > key, apart from that they look great!

Any news on when the blank R4s will be available (i'm after 26 of them)? I would be hoping to get replacements for the aforementioned keys at the same time if i could get them individually.

Just got my starcraft keys in today after the first ones sent out to me were lost in the mail! Great customer service from Feng to send out a replacement set for me! Keys look great but its a bit difficult to get them on my keyboard. Trying to file the little cross-section down before putting them on as I don't want to damage my switches.

Also: Does anyone else have a straight vertical line going down their keys? Two out of three of my keys have this problem :/ Bugs me the most on the protoss one as its the most visible since the symbol is the smallest.

I only just got my first mechanical keyboard (ducky shine with cherry reds) and just joined. I was wondering if it was kosher if such a newbie made an order? I only really want a single R4 key to see how it feels and if it even fits with the LEDS on the switches. Also I don't see any reference to the sweet decepticon logo R4 key in some of the original pictures, I don't even see it being out of stock, any chance of seeing more of those?

I'm wary about these keycaps as people seem to be finding blemishes or issues with tight fits. Will there be a second round where these problems are addressed more thoroughly?

Thanks for sharing your experience, gamer!

Basically the blemish only appears on the gold ones, I think it's because of the workers who might have touched the key caps before they get dried.

And yes, there are two different kinds of molds for the stems. The right one as B in the picture, is the new mold. MKC told me that the left one as A is too tight so he changed the mold. But I think it's still tight though. :(

I'll post the 2nd round of this GB as soon as I can. I'm ready to do that. Just I have many homework and tests these two weeks, damn. x_x

The blank R4, R3, R2, and R1 will all be available to order. As well as the blank Tab, Capslock, and 1.25 modifier.

Also the 37 blank set will be back for sure. :)

Yeah, I have a vertical line on the left side of the top surface of both of my Filco Esc caps.

I've talked to MKC, but there's nothing he can do to solve this problem so far. :(

There are huge amount of the key caps have this problem as a vertical line on the top of the key caps. But at least it's better than the blemish issue. -_-

Would getting the wasd keycaps affect the feel of the keyboard?  How different are they from regular keys?

Still waiting for confirmation on availability of the R4 blanks, and also round 2 of these. Will round 2 have any different selections? Or better tolerances/QC?

Do you take credit card?  I don't have any money in my paypal account but I want a steelseries gold escape key.  I may have some money in it in a couple months though.

Can you let me know if the Protoss/Terran keycaps are still available? How are they printed on the keycap?

Are these cherry/sp profile or filco profile?
