[IC] Lumberjack PCB Kit | Group Buy Live
« on: Sun, 24 January 2021, 12:37:47 »

Group Buy now live, until 29th March https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=111735.0

Hello everyone.

I shared a project I've been working on a few weeks ago, and now thought others might be interested in their own. Thus this interest check.

Lumberjack PCB Kit

https://github.com/peej/lumberjack-keyboard

* Ortholinear 5x12 PCB
* Unsoldered with all through-hole components (like the Plaid)
* Fits into tray mount 60% cases (GH60 mounting PCB points), some light switch modification will be necessary
* Kit will contain all components, acrylic component cover and associated hardware (just add switches, caps & case)
* Plateless
* ATMEGA328P using USBaspLoader (like the Plaid)
* Mini-USB

Definitely. Only reservation I have is that I removed the center mounting posts on my Tofu case. But if you're able to keep the price this low it might be worth picking up another 60 case. Also mini-usb all the way, my HHKB's cable is getting bored.

Edit: how proud do the components in the middle stand in relation to the switches? Could be cool to have a polycarbonate plate cut that spans the middle and doubles as a component cover. Or maybe not. Plate(s) would be nice to have, though.

Pretty cool that the PCB fits into the universal/standard 60% cases. I'd imagine if someone wanted a plate for it that'd it'd be very easy to make one. Looks good!

The components stick a bit too proud of the PCB for a complete switch plate. The standoffs are 10mm high from the PCB, the ISP headers are the tallest component and they are about 9mm high from the PCB, the MCU is about 8mm. The spacing between the switch bottom and the plate position is only 5mm, and if you include the 1.6mm for the plate thickness then you only have 3.4mm of space. That'd be enough for the diodes but not for the other components.

You could cut a plate with a strategically placed hole for the tall components in the middle, or even cut two small plates, one for each side.

Thanks to everyone who has filled in the IC form, I'm a little blown away, in 2 days I've had over a hundred people show interest by submitting the form.

I also had a bunch of great feedback from people that I'd like to go over now:

  • Bootloader - Unsurprisingly 90% of people would want the bootloader pre-flashed onto the microcontroller. Looks like I'm going to have to figure out a way to ISP flash lots of MCUs.
  • Regions - People seem to be about 50/50 split between Europe and NA, so I'm going to look into partnering with a US vendor to help with distribution.
  • MiniUSB - Surprisingly 3/2 of respondents were interested in the fiddly USB-C port instead of MiniUSB. Even so, I'm still tempted to stick with MiniUSB for ease of building and to reduce failures.
  • PCB Colours - In theory we could do red, yellow, blue, and white PCB colours too; this would make ordering and shipping more complex. TBH out of all PCB colours black is easily the best.
  • FR4 plates - A number of people asked about plates and/or suggested FR4 plates. This could definitely be an additional option for those that want them. It would most likely be two "half plates" (this would keep the cost down), but could also be a full plate with a central hole for the components and standoffs.
  • Pre-assembly - Where's the fun in that, this is supposed to be something you build yourself, and it really isn't difficult, non of the components are small or fiddly.
  • Price - Everyone seems to love a bargin. Hopefully with volume I can to stick to about 15, def no more than 20, I'm only trying to cover costs here.

If you haven't filled in the form and are interested, please do, it is still open https://forms.gle/cdFd2vwHPU3ovAUE8

And if you have any other suggestions or comments, please let me know.

Nice! Thanks for the update mate.

Do you have plans to release a 3D printed case or even an acrylic case for it? It would be cool to have it on a high profile case for it's my preference, but maybe others will join in as well.

Looks amazing! As a Discipline 65 user looking to give ortho a try, this seems like a great GB that retains a lot of the vintage "handmade" aesthetic that I enjoy, with those visible through-hole components. I especially love the fact that it slots right into a standard 60% tray-mount as it gives great options for case without inflating the GB price, and I have a couple of cases I could use already.

I see from your IC responses so far you're looking to pre-flash. I personally do have a programmer and could flash my own, but I definitely feel like pre-flashing is the right choice because it makes the GB more accessible to those who are happy and confident with a soldering iron, but just want to build something and have it work without the hassle of software.

Good luck!

I think I said that before (on Reddit?), but will say it again - this looks great! I just ordered a wooden 60% case especially for this board :)

I recently started a small EU-based on-line shop specialising in cheap through-hole kits, so I was going to offer to proxy for you - but I see you're in the EU too :) Anyway, definitely going to order some PCBs for the shop, hope that's OK. I'd be happy to send you a little kickback from every sale.

Anyway, I see you're on the fence about USB-C. I would definitely prefer USB-C despite the fact that it's a bit tricky to solder - all the other kits I sell have USB-C (Mysterium, Discipline, Sesame, Plaid-C, Romeo, Discipad). The future is now :) If you decide not to implement USB-C right now I'd be happy to contribute the USB-C version - I have done the same for Plaid (https://github.com/piit79/plaid-c).

I'm glad you've decided to offer a switch plate, that's a good addition for people who want to use plate-mount switches, or want to Mill Max the board. I was planning on creating one if you didn't :) I think a two-part plate is the most cost-effective solution.

And just one question. I don't see any mounting points apart from the two slots on the side. Do I understand it correctly that the board sits on the 4 large standoffs around the centre? That's actually a great solution as the standard 60% mounting points don't work very well with ortho (but can be made to work with some modifications - I have an XD75 PCB in a Tofu case). How long are the bottom standoffs please?

Anyway, kudos on great project, and thanks so much for making it open-source!

There's a third mounting point to the left of the reset (?) button. I don't think the standoffs protrude beyond the pcb, if you look at the knolled image there's four screws that fasten from the bottom through the pcb into the standoffs.

Hi Piit79, yes we spoke on Reddit. I will reach out to you on Discord about USBs and vendoring if that's easier.

The PCB has three screw holes for the case standoffs to fix to, left, middle and right. The other 3 case standoffs just sit against the PCB/switches, there is some trimming of plastic switch pins on these switches so as to avoid the standoffs.

The four standoffs for the component cover do not contact the case, they only come upwards from the board to support the cover. You could in theory have these standoffs also going down to the bottom of the case for support, I hadn't thought of that. It would be hard to get the correct length standoffs and it would of course differ per case. I have been using the PCB in my Tofu case for a few weeks now and have not noticed any PCB movement. There is a little flex on the top row in the middle but nothing that I really notice or causes any problems.

Ah, I'm blind, thanks for pointing that out. I didn't look properly at the assembled board either - I assumed the fat brass cylinders were standoffs that go underneath the PCB when they're actually used as nuts. Which looks very cool :)

It's been over a week, so I wanted to give a quick update:

* I've had 162 replies to the IC form, 50% from NA, 40% EU, 10% others.
* US proxy is onboard to handle US and CA orders.
* I've been experimenting with a hybrid USB Mini + Type C footprint so that the PCB can support either. An order for a test PCB will be placed this week.
* A simple FR4 plate files have been created and gerbers added to Github. These will be an optional extra.

Great job! Love the custom footprint to allow routing in the very tight space while maintaining pad size Hope the layout works out. (Note to self: learn how to edit footprints in KiCad.)

Quick update as another week has passed.

* Prototype PCB for the USB connector has been ordered as are on their way from JLCPCB. This will allow me to test the footprint as well as the fitting/positioning.
* Some USB-C connectors are also on their way thanks to piit79 @ 42keebs.
* Some people asked about different PCB colours, we can't easily do this while hitting a good MOQ, sorry.
* Standoffs included in the kit will be black nylon with black metal hex screws as these are more neutral and less opinionated than brass.
* People have asked about cases, the PCB has only been tested in the Tofu pictured but the USB should sit flush with any case that supports the standard GH60 USB position. I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending cases that I have not tested.

Isn't the MOQ just 5? Sure, if only 5 PCBs are ordered the effective price is a bit higher, but nothing major.

If you don't want to deal with the hassle, I'd be happy to stock the other colours in my shop in small quantities.

Buying a 5 MOQ is like twice as expensive per PCB as at 50 MOQ. I guess I could bump the price and then offer a discount if a colour reaches an MOQ. I wish I'd explicitly asked for colour feedback in the form now. I'm not sure how much more complexity adding different colours would add to fulfilment, probably not much.

Out of interest what kind of standoffs are used for the acrylic window? I was thinking about getting brass plates cut for this so brass standoffs would match, if there'll be black ones in the kit I'd like to buy some brass ones myself

Brass plates, nice!

The current plan for the kit is to go with black nylon standoffs and black thumbscrews, simply cos they are cheaper and go with all styles/colours of case.

I have some 10mm brass standoffs so I could always throw a few your way, but if you're going for a specific look you'd probably be better off getting exactly what you want.

These are the nuts I used https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000023718164.html (M2). I only have one spare as they come in lots of 5.

But having the threaded end on the standoff and using a nut rather than having a threaded standoff with a screw makes it hard to remove the component cover without also removing some keycaps. Not a huge pain, but annoying none the less.

Another update. The test PCBs arrived. These are a small board to test the USB-C placement and the combined USB footprint. It contains all of the workings so I can also test the firmware and use it as an ISP flasher.

I've tested the fitting of the USB-C and Mini USB in the Tofu and it looks good. The USB-C connector is slightly more proud from PCB than normal, I'm not sure how much (if any) of an issue this would be.

I haven't had time to solder up the board yet to test the USB-C connector, hopefully I'll get to it this week.

If it does not work as expected or the connector placement is deemed too proud of the PCB, I'll look into producing 2 different PCBs, but this will probably end up limiting PCB colour options.

Quick update.

I soldered together the test board with the USB-C connector and a USB mini and I'm happy to say that they both work as expected. I'm going to make a small tweak to the footprint to make the USB-C pins slightly easier to solder and then we should be good.

The test PCB also works as an ISP flasher (thus the Pro-Micro on there) and I've successfully used it to flash a bootloader and default firmware onto the MCU, so this should help speed up the time it takes to flash the chips rather than having to mess around with wires and DIP sockets.

Group Buy soon hopefully.

Very excited. I might get two different colors, even. And fantastic work getting an NA proxy on board!

Really excited for this board! Ever since I started using a planck, I started to miss using the number row for gaming, so this fits in just perfectly.

* 4 colours of PCB; black, white, red, blue, but if we don't hit MOQ (10) for a specific colour it might have to be dropped.

Just in case you are short on some of the colours, please let me know - I'll buy out the remaining PCBs :)

Looking forward to the GB!

I was going to wait for the GB thread to be live, but I'm running out of hours left in the day and people appear to have already found the page on ThocKeys.

So if you want to jump the gun:

Europe & ROW: https://forms.gle/nzCqoxMh2LMvwJ6L7
USA & Canada: https://thockeys.com/lumberjack-pcb/

Group Buy details:

* Group Buy open until 28th March
* Paypal invoices will be sent after that date for non-NA orders
* Kit production time expected to take 8 weeks after all invoices are paid
* USB-C connector and FR4 plates are an optional extra
* Microcontroller will be pre-flashed by myself with a bootloader and QMK firmware
* Kits will be shipped via PostNL from The Netherlands or from ThocKeys in Massachusetts
* Delivery times are expected to be long due to Covid, I'm expecting to have kits complete and ready for shipping in June
* Weekly updates on progress in the Geekhack GB thread
* Detailed build guide will be updated with images once I've built a test PCB from the production run: https://github.com/peej/lumberjack-keyboard/blob/master/guide.md

Thanks for your support!
I'll post the GB thread when it's approved.
