They chewed on sticks. Some people still do. Usually made from neem, licorice root, or chicory.

Prehistoric fossils show early humans with all manner of health problems, but generally very good teeth.

Besides the whole refined sugar thing, modern blood is thought to be lower in pH than ancient blood due to dietary change.

It has lower PH because people are eating so much meat.  Amino-Acid, it's an acid, not only does this lead to bone loss because the body pulls phosphates from the bone to buffer the acidic blood,  meat consumption is also the root cause of common cancers /heart disease /diabetes /autoimmune disorders.
