They chewed on sticks. Some people still do. Usually made from neem, licorice root, or chicory.

probably just have bad teeth?

Prehistoric fossils show early humans with all manner of health problems, but generally very good teeth.

Besides the whole refined sugar thing, modern blood is thought to be lower in pH than ancient blood due to dietary change.

"The company [Taylor Farms] made two (2) million-dollar donations: $1 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, and $1 million for MAGA Inc, a super PAC that supports Trump.
The $1 million to MAGA Inc was made on March 25, 2025, just just six days after the FDA announced it was delaying the implementation of its “Food Traceability Rule” by 30 months."

It has lower PH because people are eating so much meat.  Amino-Acid, it's an acid, not only does this lead to bone loss because the body pulls phosphates from the bone to buffer the acidic blood,  meat consumption is also the root cause of common cancers /heart disease /diabetes /autoimmune disorders.
