The Intellimouse..
« on: Thu, 24 March 2016, 12:51:18 »
It was 1996, 1 years after Tp4 came to 'Murica...

And this mouse blew my mind...

Dug this one out of the basement..

All 3 Switches are Omron Japan, D2F-01F-T..

The T just means clinching through-hole leads.. they're slightly bent leads that grip the pcb.. Otherwise they're the same as, the non-T

The wheel is also hooked up to a Japan-made rotary switch.

I got two Microsoft intellimouse 1.1's for free a little while ago, haven't had a chance to use them recently but they are fantastic.

Oh and if anyone wants to overclock the polling rate to 500 or 1000 for Fps games or just general better reponse, here you go http://sweetlow.orgfree.com/hidusbf.html

It works on windows 8 and 10 as of the latest update.

Yeah I got a couple of those.

Is the sensor and internals very different from that one? I heard they where mostly the same besides the side bottons.

The Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1 (WMO), the Intellimouse Optical 1.1 (IMO), and the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 (IME),  all use the same sensor/ tuning..

All are moddable..  the Pre 2005 made ones had Japan Omron.. the newer ones have China Omron.

There is also the WMO 1.0.. which is NOT game-able, and if you tried to move fast at all, it will malfunction..

^^ Really easy to identify a 1.0, plug it in,  move left and right really fast, if it loses tracking, then it's a 1.0..

and unfortunately they all **** out within 18 months of regular use. i finally gave up on the IME about a year ago after something like 12 years of using them.

So you've gone through 8x  IMEs in the 144 months (12 years)?

Do you mean the Omrons stop working after 18months or the whole mouse?

8 would be a good estimate, yeah. Have four still sitting in the closet now (though might've finally thrown them out last month). What happens is eventually the switches go defective and multi-click while the button is held (often resulting in double-clicks off single-clicks). And while there's a software fix for it (it basically just ignores the clicks performed within x ms of a click), it creates some behavioral issues with click-and-dragging (because the mouse can fire off a large amount of defective clicks once you hold it, it basically forgets about the hold so you have to keep re-clicking just to drag something somewhere).

So the mouse still works, it's just you either deal with unintended clicks, or ****ed up drag-dropping (barring you replacing the switches, which I'd need someone to do for me). There's also the wheel issue with the IME (and the others?) where it scrolled on its own, but that was mostly fixable using some paper/tape though.

I'm trying to find a newer IME,  but can't seem to find a legit one on Ebay, they seem to all be clones. .

Over in my Zowie FK review thread someone posted that certain IME clones are actually decent, but haven't been able to find much else about them.

Amazing high quality pictures! WOW. You should seriously review the Taiwanese Intellimouse 3.0 knock-offs. They are simply amazing (if you know where to look)!!

The IME is historically significant.. the Clone lacks this appeal..

I was all excited to go swapping my switches for something stiffer... I took apart my intellimouse optical (original first release) and it already has the D2F-01F T in left/right slots.

You don't lube the rollers/ ball

because if the ball got greasy, it gets really messy and grimy..

it's pretty smooth all on its own as long as its clean.

I absolutely do not miss the roller-ball mouse era. That said, this was likely everyone's first experience with a scroll wheel, and that was a game-changer.

If you want to have that kind of game-changing pointer experience all over again, get yourself an L-TRAC.

EDIT: As far as a standard mouse goes, I'm also very happy with the Microsoft Comfort Mouse 6000 (http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00A1702Z0).

Aw, I was just kidding around. If you add grease to a roller ball mouse the ball stops rolling :))

Good info on the greasy balls, thanks boys!

I've been eyeing this bad boy - https://steelseries.com/gaming-mice/rival-300

I'm still using a Zowie EC1 that I got from a fellow GH member, it's a great mouse too. Not sure if it's compatible with Internet Explorer like the Intellimouse. :))

The Rival looks nice. Very similar in size and shape to the Microsoft Comfort Mouse 6000 I recommended above, but cheaper since it's not discontinued. If my 6000 died today I would probably buy the Rival, even as a non-gamer.
