Hello world, this is SENSY.

Here we go. Seal 80, the sequel to 100% is coming. Thanks to your affirmation previously, and all your thoughts and feedback too, they’ve all been heard, loud and clear. After several rounds of sampling, this current version has been shown and shared during meetups in Shanghai and Tokyo. With these little improvements, its domestic GB was done and now it’s time for its global tour.

Some features we meant to deliver:

Versatility

We always recall the joy this hobby brought to us since the beginning. From Cherry MX, Alps,Micro Switch,Beamspring,Fujitsu leaf spring to EC Topre and so forth, those little surprises has delighted us for years.

The pity is we don’t have plenty options of Alps supporting keeb. That's why we previously employed a relatively common PCB design on Seal100 that is compatible with both MX and Alps SKCM/SKCL switches. But this is far from sufficient, especially for those who favour vintage keyboards.

Therefore, when Seal comes to the Gud&Old 80%, it’s determined to adopt the A87 standard, which is compatible for MX, Alps, SMK, Omron B3G, EC and even Hi-Tek (AKA Space Invaders, respect to 4ppleT who made it open source for us). This might be the PCBs with the most cheese holes you've ever seen lmaooo.

Structure

Top mount + the ‘Smoke’ buffer

We introduced PEI plate with silicone block(70A/90A) to Smoke65’s top mount. Although this plan had caused high cost and complex assembly, it provided most superior typing feel we ever had so far. Smoke 65’s PEI plate plan is designed to reproduce the force break effect which results in expanded thickness and excessive screws.

In order to lower the front height (2mm reduced) and simplify its assembling, we brought the separated buffer bar & PVC bottom cushion to improve the smoke 65’s plate plan.

Other bits&pieces

In accordance to Seal’s successive design language, the bridge arch look remains plus the trim added above arrow keys, some kind of meaning like ‘Front to Back, Call and Response’.

Regarding to the PC option, it’s pointless to hang on to the ‘force break’, so we replaced the buffer with two copper AF bars. You may find its beauty of decoration beneath PC case, either seamless or screwless or whatever you call it.

PEI 4mm from Smoke65 is provided. Furthermore, after careful testing, PCABS plate (also 4mm) is ready for GB too. Comparing with PEI’s crispy sound, you may find ABS much more bouncy and thooooocker.

We found uncomfortable hollow feel generated from Smoke65’s space bar area due to too much layouts options. So we canceled 6.25U option in Seal 80. Meanwhile, we divide ANSI and ISO into two separate plate options to maximize the filled FEEL.

Regarding to the silicone block, not only 70A&90A, we found an interesting material called TPU with hardness of 98A. It’s 3D printed, tested, and will be available for GB.

Some tiny thoughts

To conclude this IC, after seeing so many designers and producers come and go in this hobby, I usually ask myself what’s the essence of Mechanical Keyboards and how people want it nowadays. To include all those little joys of different solutions ever created and existed, is why and how this baby Seal 80 was born.

And that’s why I love this game.

Really hope you could like it.

Thanks for reading.

Would have been nice to have similar option for the weight finish and material as the badge and strip. Also limiting the weight patina finish to only brass is a bit sad otherwise looking good

Cool project, nice to see the support of all the different mechanical switches.

Feel like I've seen that accent by the nav cluster a few times already, I wasn't a fan of them then or now.

Good luck !

hey  :D
ive been wondering yesterday after seeing this how the board will sound with those "force break" type strips.
Will be board sound more Thin due to the Middle part or can this be prevented by using Copper or ABS instead of TPU?
The board itself looks amazing to me and will be my next board for sure  :thumb:

Cool board and I love how many options there are! Shame about the nav cluster accent, I much prefer the look of the seal100.

Some materials of badge and strip are very very expensive. Moreover, the focus of some materials is not suitable for use as weights.
The patina of copper can be completely completed by users themselves, and the patina of copper is not suitable for mass production. The patina of brass cannot be achieved by ordinary users themselves. Therefore, in our opinion, providing a patina for brass is enough.

In our opinion, using TPU will make the sound cleaner, while using ABS to test the sound is more like a original keyboard.

+1

I also think that the simplicity of the seal100 was its strong point: I find the accent above the navigation cluster decidedly artificial, an unnecessary forcing.

Is it possible to put a EC11 rotary knob in the upper right switch position?   It's possible to fit this into the same PCB with Alps switches, without losing anything, e.g. like this PCB https://karolingian.com/products/alpine8kal-tkl-pcb-for-alps

It looks like all PCBs, except EC, only support 7U space tsangan bottom row.  Something that comes with using vintage switches is that one usually must also use vintage keycaps harvested from a vintage board, so there is no choice in bottom row.  Many vintage boards (e.g. all Apple ALPS boards) are not tsangan bottom row.  There is really no drawback to adding more bottom row options to PCB.

We currently do not have this plan. On the one hand, our PCB already has too many hole positions, and it is difficult for me to confirm whether adding more hole positions will affect the wiring. At the same time, the knob requires additional programming.

We have partnered with Metakeebs in GB in China and provided their EC kit. If it is possible to reach an agreement with the vendors, then we will also join the international GB.

In fact, there is a huge problem here. Due to compatibility issues, if we need to be compatible with both 7u and 6.25u, it will cause many holes in the bottom row to invert. And this will cause conflicts with the bottom shell when using shafts with excessively long pins. Therefore, in fact, Chinese users will see that we added more bottom row options in the initial sampling, but ultimately we removed these.

For the Apple keyboard, due to the unique height of the keycaps, we do not believe that assembling the Apple keycaps onto a regular keyboard is a wise choice. We also have a keyboard called Separation under development, which will be specifically designed to fit the keycaps of Apple keyboards.

For us, Seal100 is an ancestral product from which we have derived different branches. Who knows if we'll come up with other designs later? Hahaha

The pure MX solder PCB has lock indicator. And you can also use H87 pcbs.

Thanks! I should have double checked the listing mentioning H87 PCBs!
That might be the way, as I don’t think I’m confident enough to solder LEDs.

Just watched Alex's video on this board. The thick plate sounded really good.

Looks like a lot of effort, testing, resources spent to enable the various switch support and plate options, awesomee! GLWGB!  :thumb:
