Title: Cherry Switch Tester Summer 2012 Tour
Post by: hashbaz on Wed, 16 May 2012, 03:52:53
For round two of the Cherry Switch Tester, litster and I have four testers.  Three will tour the US while the fourth goes up north to Canada.

Please PM me or post in the thread when you have received the tester.  Also please post your thoughts on the switches.  If you'd like, take a fun picture with the tester and post that as well.

For the US testers, ship via USPS small flat rate box with delivery confirmation, and PM the tracking number to me as soon as you ship.  Please keep the tester no more than three days.  Please keep the bubble wrap and enclosed switch legend and ship it with the tester to the next person in your chain.  I will PM you the next address when you need it.

I'm not familiar with the shipping options inside Canada, so please just do something reasonable and remember to pack the tester well.

I'm set to get my tester keypad today.

I assume the "3 day" rule applies to business days? Wouldn't do much good to have it sitting in a USPS facility on a saturday/sunday.

EDIT: In either case i'll probably try to ship it out friday if I do indeed get it today, so the point is moot for myself

Yeah, of course.  I just don't want people keeping it for a week.

IIRC Canada Post doesn't have anything nearly as cost effective and efficient as the pre-paid boxes that USPS has. They have hard parcel envelopes but they run at 25 bucks for a regional one day ship, so not really suitable.

Last thing I shipped with canada post was my Fiance Visa to enter the states 2 years ago lol

Well, eagarly checked at lunch but no small postal box. Highly doubt that i'll get it later today because that's how USPS operates round these parts.

I'll expect to get it tomorrow.

Received the Cherrypicker today. There really isn't any other name for it, as much as I would like to get creative and come up with something of my own.

Since I had previously tried less than half of these switches, it is very interesting and informative. Makes me want to buy another couple of keyboards.

WHAT ?

There is one question/observation I want to pass on. The top row of 4 keys are browns. Maybe it's just me, but the second one from the left does not seem to have the bump in the middle. It feels linear like the reds and blacks.

Am I imagining things, not sensitive enough, or can the bump be worn down?

Anyway, I will let the next few testers tell me whether I am right or I am crazy.

Here is my vacation photo:

Thanks fohat.  I got these numpads used, so it's possible that that key is worn down or damaged in some way.  I didn't have to mod the top row since the numpads come with brown switches.

I have the tester, and it's great to be able to feel all the different switches...and together at one time.

What is the force with these 'ergo clears'? They are soft tactile (ergonomic)?

I will mail on Saturday!

Ergo clears are clear stems with brown springs.  So they are light like browns but more tactile.

Hmm. Got the numpad and tried it immediately and after typing on my G15 for a while.

Everything feels so different than I expected it to. My only experience is with white ALPS, and BS unicomp/M boards, so by comparison, most all these keys besides maybe the clears feel a little mushy, I was expecting more force back from the browns.

as you say, though, if they are used that might factor into it. I really can't feel any pronounced bump on the browns that I was expecting, and the reds feel very smushy.

FIRST THOUGHTS

Browns- Not at all what I was expecting, was hoping for a very pronounced "YOU HAVE NOW PRESSED THE KEY" like what you get with a BS key
Blues  - Not nearly as clicky as I expected, again, I was expecting TAPATAPATAPA as i touch them and it's more of a muted "dit". I could see how if you were hammering on them it would be loud, but average typing i doubt they'd be as loud as a BS board.
Greens- Kind of an odd duck, like a combination between blacks and blues, but yet neither. I think I prefer blues but just barely.
Blacks - Not bad, feels more what I was expecting from the browns, but without the bump. Honestly might be my favorite so far. I can see how people would complain of typing fatigue on them, though.
Reds   - Smush, Smush, Splat. they go down with a feather touch, even my G15 has more resistance than these I think.
Clears - Yes, Mr Hulk, we have your keyboard in for pickup. Even though i'm used to BS keys, these are a little much for me. Very stiff.
Ergos  - My understanding was ergos didn't have a tactile bump, but i'm feeling a little bit of something there. What's that about?

Second thoughts

Browns- You know, not bad, I could learn to live with them. Maybe i'm just trying too hard to like them though. The tactile bump and no click were the two big turn ons for browns and honestly neither of those are coming out to play for me.
Blues  - The switch on the left isn't clicking at all, but the two others are, so I am disregarding the one on the left. Click click. Still nowhere near what I thought they'd be noisewise. I would actually consider a board with these for my daily typing now.
Greens- still odd to me, just a harder blue. not a deal breaker but I can see why they're not very popular
Blacks - The more I try them, the more I like them. The only issue would be fatigue from long sessions, but I could see myself using these switches.
Reds   - Still not really liking these, very soft, i could see myself resting my fingers on the keyboard and typing a bunch of crap by accident. I can definetly see where they get the "cloud of boobs" moniker from. Might get a CM Storm with reds for when i'm feeling lazy.
Clears - They're stiff yeah, but not much stiffer than blacks when you get right down to it. Not my first choice, and still an odd switch. Would be very worried about fatigue from these but you would get some buff fingers over time.
Ergos  -Okay, i'm almost thinking there is some crud stuck in these switches, there is an insane amount of bump or a catch or something with these, like plastic rubbing on plastic, is this normal? Far left only has it coming up, middle one actually STRUGGLES to come up and right one is intermittent. Enter key seems to be mostly free of this issue.

DAY 1 FAVORITES

I came into this thinking i'd like the browns the best, and like reds too, and was totally disregarding the odd ducks like blacks and clears for my purposes, but I have to say.

1.Blacks
2.Blues
3.Browns
4.Greens
5.Ergo clears
6.Clears
7.Reds

If i had to list them, that would be it. I think I still have a strong preference for BS when possible, and in comparison my like for White ALPS held up surprisingly well! TBH I think I might prefer White ALPS over Cherry Blues.

Note: The margin for the last 4 on my list is very slim, and to be honest, I would probably hook any of those boards if I saw one for a good price. All in all, I found I dislike browns a lot more than expected, and that I might be looking at a board with Blacks for my daily driver.

If it's not a big issue, I'll take this to work tomorrow, and show it to my boss and another guy who is into mech keyboards, see what they think of it, Was thinking of taking it around and snapping a few shots with it during leisure time with the family, then ship it out in the early mail monday.

EDIT Holy novel batman, i'll put up a TL;DR

TL;DR Liked blacks and blues a lot more than I thought, but the reds and browns were disappointing.

Edit 2: Are clears tactical? if they had a weaker browns spring that would explain why they have issues coming back up.

Ergo clears are clear stems with brown springs.  Light like browns, extra tactile like clears.

I have been using buckling springs 90% of the time for the past year or more. I have an Acer laptop and use "good quality" rubber domes at the office (but this is only a few hours per week).
The "alternates" I rotate to, occasionally, are Monterey blues and black Alps, because I have them laying around. After a few hours, I always go back.

I recently sold my primary "alternate" board, a full-size Leopold with blues, not because I did not like it, I did, very much, but whenever I used it I could not stop thinking about buckling springs.
So, even though I still think that the blue switch is the "best" one Cherry makes, I have become indifferent to it. It is too close to my Model M/Fs to make me want to use it, instead of them.

I currently do not own a good white or blue Alps board, but am always on the lookout for one. My old Omnikeys were very nice, I need another one to put in my collection.
I had a board with black Cherries, long ago, but got rid of it before giving it an proper trial.

Internet Lad, I really like your format, so I stole it for my own use. Please don't be offended. I was not going to go as far as this, but you forced my hand.

* First Thoughts:

Browns- Exactly what I was expecting, if anything, I was hoping for a slightly more pronounced "You Have Now Pressed the Key" but this is probably just adequate.

Blues - I have used these, so I know exactly how they feel. I know them for what they are, and that that is NOT buckling spring "wannabes" but rather white Alps improvements.

Greens- Kind of an odd duck, I agree, but the sound is great in comparison to the blues, which became more annoying to me, over time and use.

Blacks - Not bad, feels like what I was expecting, maybe even a little stiffer. I can certainly see how people complain of typing fatigue on them.

Reds - Nice! They go down with a feather touch, and little or no sound until you bottom out. I really like light switches.

Clears - These are pretty good in feel, and the sound, I could live with it, easily. But, they are a little much for me. Very stiff, even though I am a big strong guy.

Ergos - Oh, these are nice! I never knew what all the love was about, but I understand now!

* Second Thoughts:

Browns- I could learn to love these. This will be my next board, and I will put pads or rings on them for a quiet and soothing experience.

Blues - Great switches. I will get another blue board one of these days, but not compelling for now.

Greens- These are growing on me. If I was building a whole board, this would definitely be my spacebar/enter/delete/etc switch. Much better sound than blue.

Blacks - No interest here. Even though I love buckling springs, I also prefer a light touch. I would love to find softer springs for my Model M/Fs.

Reds - Surprise! I never gave these much thought, but they are really nice. See above. I will surely get a red board + O-rings, for a true stealth experience.

Clears - Although I don't particularly like these, I might buy this board, someday, as a basis for the mod below.

Ergos - The other surprise. These are good. I don't know if I will get up the time and energy to do the ergo mod, but I can see how so many people think it is worth it.

 - (note, however, that I do agree with Internet Lad, there is something about the ergos that feels "off" in the action, like there is a "catch" somewhere that should not be there)

* Day 2 Ranking:

I came into this thinking that, after blues, I would like the browns the best, then ergo clears, too, and was totally disregarding the blacks and reds for my purposes. I had never given the greens any thought before, to tell the truth.

1. Blue
2. Brown
3. Red
4. Ergo Clear
5. Green
6. Clear
7. Black

I too still have a strong preference for buckling springs whenever possible, and in comparison, my liking for Blue Monterey/White Alps has held up surprisingly well. I still think I prefer Monterey Blue over Cherry Blue.

The biggest surprise here, for me, is the thought that I might be a lot happier with linear switches than I had previously imagined.

But remember, I never game, so there are a lot of gaming-related issues that are not on the table when I make my personal evaluations.

thanks again, Hashbaz

Thanks for the excellent write-up!

Ergo clears do have a catching problem.  I suspect it's due to the fact that clear stems were designed with a heavier spring in mind.  Pushing that big bump back up is probably taxing on the brown springs.  I had an ergo clear Poker for a while, and sometimes the keys would even get stuck and not pop back up without manual wiggling.  KeyboardLover has said that this effect diminishes over time, but I can't vouch for that from personal experience.  Lubing the stems would likely also help a bit.

Ahh I hate when stuff like that happens in the forums I run.

He copied and pasted an image directly into the editor using a webkit browser, or he tried to upload the file but failed.
Then, the browser has a "helpful" feature where it actually does let you copy and paste the image in, or if the upload failed and you try to embed it, it still lets you and everything looks fine to you but it's obviously broken to everyone else because you didn't actually upload the image.

Well, I've tried out the switches, and just so the future users of this know, the numock key (2nd row vertical, 1st key horizontal) seems to be out of order, and doesn't feel right. Top left key (ESC) also feels far too linear but works okay. Other than that the keypad works good. Gotta snap some pics with some of the bigger brothers i have kicking around, and we'll send it on it's way early this afternoon.

Just received the tester. My usual keyboard is the CM Storm w/reds.

Impressions:

Brown: Couldn't tell the difference from reds at first. I was expecting a bump. But after a while I could feel the slight tactility with the browns.

Blues: Tried this before at Fry's. Feels good but the noise isn't worth it.

Blacks: Tried at Fry's. Too heavy for my tastes.

Reds: Light and smooth, but I use reds everyday so it wasn't new to me

Clears: A more pronounced bump but heavier than browns or reds, almost as heavy as blacks. Don't think I can type on these for very long.

Ergo Clears: Satisfying bump and not heavy like regular clears. I think I prefer  the feel of these the most, too bad they don't come standard on boards. However, like previous posters have said there does seem to be something a bit off with them, like a little catch.

I'd have liked to try greens too or buckling springs but too bad they weren't on this tester. From my experience with this tester I think that when I have time I'll try putting together a board with Ergo Clears, although I'm happy with my Reds and feel I chose the right switch type for me. I was also thinking of buying browns before but now I won't because they feel very close to reds, the difference is almost negligible. Thanks Hashbaz for putting this tester together.

The first capital of California was Monterey...so I thought rather than the predictable beach or beach girl pic, I would try to throw some dignity and history out there for a change. Plus, the bronze grizzly is pretty cool. I convinced a girl to get on it naked one night and let me take a pic. All she was wearing was a hat and her 23 year old pride.

Sometime down the road, if someone has all the switches, I'd like to get 2 of each, 12 total (blue, black, clear, "ergo" clear, red, brown). I don't want to have to go make multiple purchases and piece a sampler together.

If someone has this, let me know. I'm in no rush.

Fremont is not known for much except for being home to a few tech companies, most notably Corsair, maker of fine computer equipment, including mechanical keyboards. Thus, to represent my town here's a picture of the tester in front of Corsair headquarters.

Too bad I can't get the tester for this weekend, or I could take pictures of the tester with cosplayers at Anime North.

On another note, has the Canadian Tester been sent out yet or are we still waiting on people to confirm?

Alright, I finally got my act together for the Canadian tour.  Here is what we have now:

style="width: 297px"
|-
|  style="width: 131px; height: 20px" |
Name
|  style="width: 64px" | Status
|  style="width: 103px" | Province

|-
|  style="height: 20px" | heuristicist
| Out
|
|-
|  style="height: 20px" | fantus

[/TABLE]

I am surprised there are no BC folks on the list.  I won't be going up to BC for a while, so I will send it from the US via 1st class parcel mail to Snowmill in Alberta first.  It should cost less than $10 but it will probably take 2 weeks or more.

Toward the end of the tour, if heuristicist is back from his trip, we can add him back to the tour before the tester comes back to me.

I may ask you to chip in a few bucks to the last person on the tour who will need to send the test back to me in the US due to higher postage.

Snowmill, I will PM for the first leg.

Please, make sure you take pictures around your town, and write a review.  That's all hashbaz and I ask in return.

Impressions from someone who primarily uses rubber domes and has spent a month on buckling springs:

Browns feel a little odd to me. The tactile bump almost makes them feel mushy.
Blues feel similar to browns but they are a little less mushy feeling/slightly more precise. They have a higher pitched but lower volume sound compared to buckling springs.
Green is a cross between the browns and blues which are similar enough anyway that I can't really get a good feel for the single green.
Blacks were my favorite at first press, but feel heavy very quickly.
Reds are my current favorite, I think. Easy to depress and linear. However this comes from a guy who bottoms out every time anyway.
Clears have a more defined tactile bump than browns, but I like the linear switches better.
Ergo Clears have the most defined tactile bump of them all. I didn't like them.

When I first started researching mechanical switches I thought I would like blacks or reds the best but enough people seemed to prefer the tactile switches that I thought clears would be a good fit for me. I'm glad I waited for the tester because now I know to look for a board with red switches. Thank you, Hashbaz!

edit: fixed typo.

Obviously too late for round two, but I'd be interested in the next one, I think I'd like something with Blues (not red for certain) but if I'm to spend over $100 on a keyboard (or parts to build one :) I'd like to know exactly what I want.

Off-topic, but why is it that pictures can be posted in threads, but not in PMs?

When people are buying and selling, they may need to verify or clarify privately.

Also, we could send photos directly to Hashbaz instead of posting them twice.

Got the midwest tester today, will post my thoughts soon!
Title: Cherry Switch Tester Summer 2012 Tour
Post by: Seanmiz on Thu, 31 May 2012, 19:02:55
Initial Thoughts:

Brown: Somewhat stiff, feels clunky, the tactile feels like it's just getting in the way.

Blue: Very nice, clearly heaven for typing, but a lot of "high pitched" noise. Curious how gaming is with blues, but obviously there's tons of blue gaming boards so it must be good!

Black:  Just way too much force required to push down the keys, I'm a gamer and it's still too much.  (Currently own a black keyboard)

Red: Much easier to type on than black, although kind of feels less satisfying to bottom out with.

Clear: Very stiff and clunky, my least favorite on this tester.

Ergo: Somewhere between Red and Blue, a bit quieter than both

Green:  Slightly more force but less noise version of Blues

NOTE: I have noticed that the first blue key on this midwest tester (Num Lock) is not functioning properly, doesn't click and can hear loose parts when typing on it.  I also noticed the first Ergo key (00) doesn't seem to have the bump like the other three, but feels fine otherwise.

First some background: I have a Kinesis Advantage LF. I picked this up in January after a dozen or so years on a Goldtouch split keyboard (dome keys). The age on the Goldtouch meant that keys were sticking and getting stiffer. I was mashing the keys to compensate. That, combined with 40 years of programming, wasn't doing my hands any favors. I got the Cherry reds edition of the Advantage because I liked the light feel and figured that my hands would as well. That's been true, but I've been looking forward to checking out the alternatives - especially with my hands feeling better.

My reactions:

Brown: I tried these briefly when I was at Kinesis and didn't like the tactile feedback. I still don't like it on these keys after using them for a more extended period. They feel rough - like they're not working quite right. There's less of it here than I remember on the new Kinesis. Does the bump wear over time? On these keys it feels a bit inconsistent. Even if the feedback were more pronounced, I'm not really sure that it would be very useful to me for touch typing. I suspect that I'd have long since moved onto other keys by the time the bump registers mentally, especially given that it seems pretty subtle to me. Still, having poked at these for a couple of days on the tester, I could see getting used to browns. I'm just not sure I'd ever come to really like them.

Blue: These sound really loud in my quiet office. I'd hate to share workspace with someone using a keyboard built with blues. On the other hand, it's very effective feedback on key registration.

Green: I like the sound better than the blues, but the one green key on the tester seems uncomfortably stiff to me.

Black: Even after few minutes of using these I could tell that they would make my hands hurt again long-term. I have big hands, but apparently they're too wimpy for Cherry blacks.

Red: I still like the light touch and the smooth action on these keys. Working down this list is making me glad that I got the Advantage with reds.

Clear: These feel too stiff to me, although I like the tactile bump better than the one on the browns.

Ergo clear: I guess that these are supposed to be like browns, but with a more distinct tactile bump. I get that from them, but they also feel like they could easily hang up. I'd probably be tempted to start hammering them like I had to with the old Goldtouch (really feel guilty now about my wife taking that after her old keyboard failed). If it weren't for the hang up concern, I'd probably like these better than the browns, as the ergo clears feel more consistent.

My ranking:

1. Red
2. Brown
3. Ergo clear
4. Blue
5. Clear
6. Black
7. Green

I could live with the first three. I'd have my doubts after that.

I see that my ranking is roughly in order of increasing activation pressure. It looks like my initial preference for reds is holding up. Now I'm wondering how hard it would be to mod reds to make them even lighter.

It's raining here again, so getting outdoor photos with the tester is a problem (unless it can swim). I suppose that a shot of the rain would be representative of the PNW, too. I'll see what I can do when I take it in tomorrow to send it off.

reading your two reviews made me re-trace my journey into keyboards last year.  I started with brown, sold it, got Realforce topre, Model buckling springs, and a couple blues.  I thought I red would be my favorite of all MX switches.  But I ended up going back to brown.  I am typing on 87U variable at work and 87U45g at home right now.  But I also typed on SSKs and MX Browns before I swapped in the topre keyboards.  I like brown so much so that I put brown into the first Phantom prototype.

Now please get some pictures with the testers.  :-)

Here's a picture of the west coast tester visiting Point Wilson Lighthouse, near Port Townsend, WA. This point is where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets Puget Sound. All shipping traffic into and out of Puget Sound passes by this point. Navigational duties are now handled by an electronics tower just out of sight to the right, but this is more picturesque.

If you look (very) closely, you can see the Port Townsend ferry heading into town at the lower right.

Browns- Not at all what I was expecting, was hoping for a very pronounced "YOU HAVE NOW PRESSED THE KEY" like what you get with a BS key

I'm in search of the "YOU HAVE NOW PRESSED THE KEY" feeling with cherry. That's why I didn't lament my order of green, clear and whites in the recent cherry MX GB. Thanks for this awesome statement.

I need to find an interesting place to photograph this near, once I receive it.

I'm very interested to try clears and ergo-clears.

Well there's only one on the (at the risk of sounding like an idiot) belt, and it would either be at the start or the end, Although i would have guessed "tracer" simply because I don't know of many other types of specialty ammo, and it would make sense to show you exactly how your shot is (again at the risk of sounding like an idiot) flying.

Since "tracer" has already been said, and for some reason i'd expect those to be white or red tip (total guess) I'll say it's a marker/paint round for sighting in.

I only recently got into mechanical keyboards. I bought two super modified keyboards from geekhack user TheProfosist back in December '11 and January '12. One is MX Blues, the other MX Reds. I went into buying them completely blind, only having done a substantial amount of reading to figure out which switches would likely be best for me...After using the tester switch, I think I did my homework well because I like what I purchased the best!

Browns - too light! I can barely feel the tactile bump. I feel like if I was using a full keyboard of browns I'd wind up bottoming them out anyway.

Blues - I use these on my work keyboard - lots of typing, emails, number pad data entry, etc. I find the high resistance from these plus the click in the middle is optimal for relieving/preventing any sort of RSI related pain. I hardly ever bottom the key out. I like the way the sound too. Noisy! But nobody has ever commented on it in the office--only that I type fast, not noisily.

Reds - featherweight switch! I use reds on my keyboard at home, where I do mostly FPS and the occasional RTS gaming. I like how they are extremely easy to actuate, and more importantly, keep actuated for extended periods of time. (Holding sprint/shift, holding forward/W, etc.)

Blacks - Glad I was able to compare these to the reds I've used for the past 6 months. I'd say they require twice as much force to actuate. I still prefer the reds over blacks for my gaming keyboard at home for the aforementioned reasons. For a typist, I would suggest to any prospective mechical keyboard owner to get a tactile switch over the blacks, most likely blues...If you're nerdy enough to wind up on geekhack, chances are you type fast enough to make use of blues. I feel like I would wind up hurting myself on browns from bottoming out too often. Back on topic, though, I don't care for the blacks at all, only because I feel the reds fill any role they may be suited for better.

Clear - I've done no research on these. The clears feel like they are weighted just about the same as the blues, except the tactile feel in the middle is just muddier and less precise than the blues. Do not like.

Ergo clear - These feel like they're also weighted about the same as blues. I'm not sure what the anatomy of this switch is but I could feel feedback almost immediately after applying pressure. These might be nice for the super speedy touch typist. If I was to invest in a 3rd keyboard to be used for mostly composition typing I'd consider this or topre (which I haven't tried before!)

Green - Just feels like a really, really heavy blue switch. I can imagine being fatigued quickly using a full keyboard of greens.

There is my review! Hope it comes in use to at least one prospective buyer, somehow, somewhere. I researched for hours before I finally made my first decision on what kind of switches to get. Will ship out the tester tomorrow, will also post a pic then too!

BTW I'm switching out my internet access late this week/early next week (finally going to get more than 5mbps). After Thursday/Friday or so I won't have internet access till next Tuesday-Thursday so if I get the tester in that period I'll be offline till then.

Also, I'm wondering but I know in the original list a lot of people were from Toronto, how many are on the list now? I frequently bus back to Toronto so if there are a bunch of people there we maybe can do a meetup or something like they tried with the previous tester I believe.

Only the people who confirmed back are on the current list.  If there are people in and around the Toronto area and you want to meet with them for them to try with the tester, I think that is cool too, as long as it doesn't take more than a couple days longer to send to the next person in line.

Also, please post before you go online with your ISP and post again when you come back from the other side :-)  Thanks.

Hashbaz, what's with the "green" on your east coast tester? The stem is white, and according to this post: whites and greens are different:
http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?32108-Cherry-MX-(taking-pre-orders!)&p=615194&viewfull=1#post615194
Just wondering.

I'll try to ship it out Monday before work.

Thanks for letting me try this! I'm still very excited about ergo clears.

Litster's tester has a green switch.  The white clicky switch on mine is lighter than a green, I believe.

If it's a true white, it should be heavier than the green, makes less noise too even though it clicks.

There was some argument about how heavy these things are ... I can't remember if there was a consensus.

Well, I have current whites and greens here... white is stiffer.  No clue if that's a different white considering I was under the impression 8 months ago that white didn't get made any more.

Guys, don't know if hash has mentioned this already but sorry to be the one holding up the line.  According to USPS, the tester was delivered to me on the 11th but I haven't received anything.  Hopefully they delivered it to my neighbor in the next building (it happened before with the Darth Vader keycap from ClickClack and a few more times after that).

I went and knocked on her doors for the past few days but noone was there.  I'm thinking she might be out of town or something and hopefully be back soon.  Sorry about the delay. =(

Can't wait for the tester now that NCIX has just gotten Filcos in stock, I may buy my first every Cherry Switch keyboard yet.

Hey all,

Sorry about the long delay in sending the Canadian tester out, had the flu then headed out for vacation.

Great little device, does the job. I really like the non-tacto blacks, a little more pressure required than the browns but definitely an interesting feel.  The Ergo Clears have the most bizarre feel to them, not sure if I'd ever use them in a real world scenario and felt kind of awkward to type on.  What overshadowed all the keys though were the reds, clearly and barnone these were the best keys.  Next KB will definitely be Cherry Reds non-tacto.

Here's a few obligatory pics, and since 'in the mouth' pics seem to be order of the day I present to you:

Bytheway, I'm definitely seeing the appeal of ergo clears. I preferred that white to the "normal" clears, which I thought weren't bad. The middle brown feels like a red, though.

Now I just need some springs to make my clears to ergo-clears. I just realized that I have almost no of the lighter springs.

Tester being sent off to the next recipient today.

• I found browns to be much lighter than I was expecting, I had to really concentrate to feel the bump at all. I have developed a really heavy hand due to all the ****ty boards in my life.  (Seriously, the keyboard I use at work feels like I'm pressing the keycaps into mashed potatoes)

• Blues were my favorite. I liked them more than I was expecting. Not as loud as I feared they'd be. The click coupled with the tactile bump kept me from bottoming out even when I tend to on other switches.

• Reds were nice, but too light for me. I could see myself investing in a board with reds at some point in the future.  I have a Ducky Shine with blacks, and I love it for gaming, but not so much for typing.

• I liked clears and ergo clears, but not quite as much as I liked blues. The click for me was a more pleasant feedback than a stronger tactile bump.  My husband, however, LOVED clears/ergos, so I think our next board will likely have clears. (Looking into a Deck Legend for him)

Last I saw, the East Coast tester left Maryland on June 25.

Any update on where it's at, now that we're at July 19?  I wasn't sure if geekhack being down affected the tester tour.

Yes, it did.  It's been more or less on hold.  I'll be PMing the last known tester holders soon to get things rolling again.

Brown: My second favorite switch, and the second board I bought (Filco TKL). I wanted a board that was quieter than blues. My biggest reaction was the tactile feedback was not nearly the amount I was expecting, having come from buckling springs and blues. Definitely my favorite switch for playing games (mainly Starcraft).
Blue: Awesome typing switch, satisfying click. Definitely a bit selfish to use if in public environment. Used it to play RTS without issue for a year or so.
Black: Worst switch of the bunch. Way too heavy, feels like my fingers would get tired even only playing FPS’s with them.
Red: Fix everyone wrong with blacks, acceptable typability, really like the quiet, will probably end up being my next kb purchase. Complaints of activation force too low not a big issue for me.
Clear: This is the level of tactility I was expecting out of the browns. About the same as blues in terms of feedback but much “rounder”. Definitely dislike the sharp increase in force after the tactile bump which is all made right by...
E.Clear: Holy crap these are awesome. I have no idea why Cherry isn’t manufacturing these as an offical switch. No issues with keys not returning to position on this tester. I want an ergo clear board to be my daily driver, just need to figure out how...

Note: I only play FPS and Tetris so any reference I make to "gaming" only applies for those games.  Other games may benefit from some of the things I think make a switch not ideal for FPS/Tetris.

Reviews
Red: I've got a KBC Poker with red so I knew what to expect, however I have hard o-rings and forgot just how squishy they really feel when you have an extra 1mm of travel.  I love my keyboard for gaming (FPS + Tetris).
Black: Similar to the reds but much harder to press and with no tactile bump I think I'd always need to bottom them out.  I spend most of my time on my computer so I think my fingers would get pretty tired by the end of a day of work and gaming.
Blue: I love how tactile the bump in these feel.  Definitely prefer these over the green for clicky keys.
Brown: This is what I use on my main DAS Keyboard.  I find it has a good balance between a tactile and linear switch.  If I had to choose a single switch to use for everything this would be my choice since I find it soft enough for gaming but still tactile enough for typing quickly.
Ergo Clear: I find they are similar to the brown but with a much more noticeable tactile bump.  These feel great but feel a bit too heavy for gaming use.
Clear: This one feels like a brown switch that uses a black spring.  It has a very similar tactile feel but with a larger force to press (which makes the tactile bump seem a bit smaller since [max_force/min_force] is smaller).  I find it too heavy for gaming and not quite tactile enough for my taste.
Tacto Black: Another switch I really like the feel of.  Feels a bit heavier than the brown but with a much better tactile bump.  (I can't find any more info on what exactly these switches are so I'd love to hear more about them if someone can point me in the right direction.)
Green: The other clicky switch option.  This feels like a heavier blue with a soft o-ring/landing pad underneath.  This switch feels like the tactile bump never ends and the high pressure goes all the way until you bottom out.  I was never a fan of the soft landing pads I bought so it isn't surprising to me that I'm not a fan of this switch.
Grey: Way too heavy for me to use as an actual key (I don't think I'd even like it as a space bar).

My top picks
Brown: If I were stuck with one keyboard switch this would definitely be my choice.  No sound so it wont bother family/coworkers, a decent tactile bump for typing but still soft enough that it works well for gaming.
Red: Still my gaming switch of choice (however I still find hard o-rings make it worlds better!)
Blue: I really like the feel of these switches.  I find they have just the right amount of resistance for me for typing.  I don't think I would like them as much for gaming though.  The audio feedback is nice as long as you have the environment to use it.
Ergo Clear: I found these very similar to the blue but slightly more tactile.  I prefer the feel of these very slightly over the blue but they lack the tactile click that the blue have.  This would be my switch of choice if you I couldn't use blues and I was doing no gaming on the keyboard.

I wasn't able to take any pictures with the tester anywhere fancy (read: I am too paranoid to take it out of the house!) so instead I present you this infographic I created to show how I felt each switch compared for tactile/force of each switch.  I marked my favourites with a purple star.

I'm sure someone can tell me just how wrong my fingers are but this seems like a pretty good representation to me.

And I'll be shipping this off tomorrow after I set up a new computer in one of the rooms at my dad's office (replacing their blazing fast Pentium III).

Hello friends,

I just got delivery of the Canadian tester. Just took her out of her packaging and I can't stop pushing these keys lol.

It's been more than two years since I've been dreaming of finally being able to compare all the switches.

I would like to thank the owner of the tester and those involved for giving us this opportunity. Great community.

I will be back with pics and opinions over the next couple of days.

Cheers.

My testers have been in limbo for a while now due to the GH exodus, extreme busyness, and other projects.  I'll be starting up a third tour soon with an entirely new sign-up process.  Priority will be given to those who have expressed interest in the past.

No picture of RIM HQ since its pretty much spread out into a ton of different buildings and its not as attractive anymore with people getting laid off and walking out the door with their personal possessions all the time.
