Title: KOREAN SWITCH STICKER GROUP BUY! (RECEIVED)
Post by: demik on Wed, 08 August 2012, 00:24:07
So, I was given the chance to bring over some switch stickers from Korea and run a group buy here.

They will come in three colors.

Red, Pink and Yellow.

They go in between the bottom and top of the sticker housing. They are suppose to dampen the noise and stabilize the switch a little more.

some pictures:

ONLY RED PINK AND YELLOW ARE AVAILABLE. WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO GET GREEN LATER!

Prices are 4 dollars per sheet (not including shipping from korea to me or from me to you, i will add that in at the final price)

120 stickers per sheet.

anyway, enough rambling.

order here:
CLOSED

nope. they still have to make them, and i dont know how long it will take TBH. plus wait time from korea to me and blahblahblahblah. sorry :(

plus im thinking of sending these in envelopes (still have to find out how) so if i was to combine shipping would probably be more expensive since 'd have to get a box big enough for the switches and stickers

It's like when you buy bulk at Sam's Club - You do it so you don't have to keep going each week to buy the same stuff. I am buying this many so I don't have to keep worrying about ordering more, and the hassle involved.

Also, I will be able to add the option of stickers to my mod services :)

So no combined shipping with the switches, huh?
So does it fit in a letter envelope? I don't mind if you fold it to fit into a letter envelope. Or cut it along the space bewteen stickers.
Is that possible?

yeah not gonna combine with switches. and the space between switches is REALLY thin. i dont want to risk ruining the stickers. sorry. normally i'd love to, but these being odd shapes (switch bags and these stickers) it's going to be expensive and a pain to ship together

I looked up USPS.com and it gives me a price of $60 something for a large envelope. That's a little much...

Do they?

Sorry for the noob questions.  I've not seen these before.  And I'm new around here.

Is there a functional difference between the colours, or just for appearance?

Thanks.

From: http://deskthority.net/marketplace-f11/ro-59-leftover-sale-stickers-custom-springs-t3591.html  A few posts down from the top of page one.

In which case I'll have at least one set please.  If all the colours are the same effect, then red.

Though before I complete your Google form, it doesn't look like there are holes for the LEDs?  What do I do about that?  Is there a version for LEDs?

Just an observation, not a complaint but I'm surprised there are no blacks available. Personally, I don't like the looks when the plate shows through between the keys and I can't stand the LEDs that glow around a group of keys or illuminate between the keys. I do however like backlit keys.

Correct me if I'm wrong but these do work on PCB mounted switches? If they are plate mount do they have to be desoldered, stickered and resoldered?

They should work on either but you will have to disassemble the switch. If you have a plate mounted board that requires you to desolder the switches to open them, then yes you will have to desolder them to open them.

Also i'm curious to find out whether they have much of an effect on platemount boards in terms of both sound and feel. I can see PCB mount boards being affected to a greater degree but at this point i'm just guessing.

i already explained that there is a cut where the diode goes, so therefor the legs of the LED will go through that. it doesn't bother the LED since that's outside the switch.

just got word that.

from the moment i put in the order, it will take 4-5 weeks for me to get the stickers. that includes production time + shipping to me.

so basically, typical SP waiting time.

I wondered if the switch top movement helps to keep the moving stem centralised as it moves up and down and around, or at least not stuck in an off set position wearing fast at just a couple of touching points?

Would it be important to keep the top very concentric with the bottom once the sticker is fitted?

Do these dampen noise in the same way O-rings do? And in what ways do they stabilize the switches more?

Looking to get this for my phantom build, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to wait that long, as I already have all my phantom parts.

No.

O rings stop the switch bottoming.

These stop the top half of the switch from moving around sideways and up and down a bit on the bottom half, and making some rattling sound.  They also therefore reduce the key cap sideways movement a bit.

I've never used them but did read the threads.

Have a look at my post at the top of page three of this thread.  Click the link, download and listen to the mp3.  It convinced me. :)

I just have to determine how many stickers I want and complete the form.  :)

There are people here who have first hand experience of these and I'd have left it to them to post but I'm posting this reply as I want to place an add and I guess I need more posts.

Alls I knows is...stickers + slider lube + oiled 62g spring + clear stem = the perfect switch.  If stickers are part of the equation, stickers it must be period.

You should also try lubed + stickered + spring modded vintage blacks.(have you?) They are favorite choice for many Korean keyboard enthusiasts.

i thought the whole big deal of vintage switches were the springs.

spring modded vintage blacks just sound like regular blacks with different springs.

unless im missing something?

Well.. vintage black in KBDMania are more about quality of sliders and switch housing. Not many people I know use vintage black springs. They all switch out the springs.

Modern blacks and vintage blacks are pretty different. The latter is known to be significantly smoother than the former.

Maybe it is pretty different here in GH. (care more about springs)

NIB vintage ones are used and preferred, so I would say it is manufacturing difference. Some people break NIB G80-2551 just to get vintage Cherry black switches.

Are these sticky on both sides, like double sided tape or just on one side in which they really only use their thickness to "tighten things up", from a mechanical perspective not from adherance.
Title: Re: KOREAN SWITCH STICKER GROUP BUY! (ENDS FRIDAY 8/17)
Post by: alaricljs on Sat, 11 August 2012, 10:43:13
I know they are definitely not sticky on top, I didn't even check the underside of any since they were already assembled and I was just stuffing diodes.

Oh, I thought they were double sided xD.

Thanks for the clarification !

Well, I thought so also. Now I need to ask, "why not". Other than they would be more expensive but wouldn't they do a better job?

I apologize if I already mentioned this idea, but since we are on the topic .... When I watch the video of the person wiggling the keycap that shows the switch wobbling around, hence the need for these stickers, although I now just consider them spacers, I also look at the movement between the switch and the mounting plate. I also think it would be a great idea to have a sticker, both sides with adhesive, between the bottom half of the switch and the mounting plate. There was quite a bit of slop there. And as I follow the phantom thread I know there is some switch wobble in the omunting plate due to the way the coreners in the plate were relieved so the switch could be disassembled which still soldered and mounted. The clearance that was cut into the corners significantly reduced the surface are on two of the sides of the switch. This was even mentioned in the thread about the wobble. The stickers we are buying here look fairly thick and I guess that works, as long as the switch halves snap together but I don't believe the new ones I speak of for between the plate and bottom half of the switch need to be that think since the tabs still need to clip the switch to the plate. So two questions ...

Is it a good idea to have the stickers above be double sides adhesive?

Would a double sided sticker between the switch and plate help reduce the wobble even more?

I think I have mentioned this to two or three people via PM and never got much feedback so I'll throw it out here in the wild for critique.

Thanks,
John

I have a phantom plate in front of me with switches inserted and they don't budge at all.  The top housing can still move, but if you grasp the bottom housing and try to move it, good luck and don't stab yourself with the leads.  Even the switches w/ stabilizer holes are rock solid.

doublesided tapes may work better but it would be harder to handle. Many people have hard time handling this single sided sticker for the first time(due to its shape; it is pretty thin) and it certainly requires some skill and practice to use this properly. I don't think many people would appreciate added difficulty.

First thing would be to establish that there is enough merit for using double-sided tape, if it performs just as good as single sided sticker we don't need to bother. Finding adequate factory would be the next step.

My gut feeling is that single-sided sticker is going to be just as good as double-sided one. The sticker is fairly thick resulting tight fitting and leaving little room for the adhesive to play a role. However, we would never know before we try them out though.

Why don't you make proto types using double-sided tapes with varying thickness and see if it performs well?

As for double sided tape... that would work assuming you can cut them accurately, and aren't using them on a PHANTOM where you can separate the switch housings post-installation and assembly.

Just in case the form didn't work, I ordered 4 sheets of red .

Also:

Did you say these are $4 each?  So that's just under £3 each or £11.  Are you in the USA?  The import tax to the UK is nil if the order value is less that £15.  I'd rather not go over the £15 as the tax is 20% and there is also a £10 charge on top.

Thanks.

Paid!

What does "sn" as in " include your sn in the notes section" mean? I read it as shipping address and put in that information, but I might have misunderstood the message. Anyways, since asked amount was sent so I suppose things cannot go terribly wrong.

Thanks for doing this GB. I am excited to get the stickers and do a proper mod.

still not sure. a box would be over kill.

so might just got with an envelope
You can use a A4 corrugated cardboard or plastic sheet.  Quite stiff and generally prevents the postal services bending the envelope.

The kind of thing for about £0.08 each: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350-C4-A4-ENVELOPE-STIFFENERS-Strong-Corrugated-Board-/130410273128

They also do envelopes that have the board built in.

Are they hard to reuse? I don't mean move to an entire switch entirely, just opening the housing and switching the stem for instance. I assume you put the sticky side down and that it will stay there. Is the sticker compressed/wrinkled/destroyed when you take the top housing of?

I looked at some 205 there.  But some people are saying that 203 grease might be better especially with 103 oil over it.  And that if only using one, then the oil felt better.  I expect you already know that from group buy threads over at DT?

I saw some graphs which showed how much better in a particular test the low friction of 103 lasted compared to others from that range of oils.

I know, right? It’s like a car crash, burned into your brain, lol. Oh, and I’ve seen haters post this regularly, so why not :3 (I like annoying bronies, too, for a change, as it’s usually the other way round, sadly)

You’d most likely think the same about stuff like K-On then, it’s just not for you. ^^

K-On might not be the best argument against this though xD Japan …

Way to stereotype bro. I like Dexter too, does that make me a serial killer? Simply put, it's a show that I enjoy, one of MANY shows I like.

That logic doesn't follow....by that logic, liking MLP means you like ponies..and posting a random pic of two bloody horses making out on an eyeball does not help your case. And if I stereotyped, I would have guessed you to be a 12 year old girl; ya know, the demographic that the show is geared towards.

Yep, there is a link to the classifieds subforum on the main page.  You need a certain minimum number of posts to be able to post there though. (50 or 60 I think?)

How it usually works is someone posts either a WTB (want to buy) or FS (for sale) thread, and interested parties respond via PM or by posting in the thread.

I don't know how to solder and I don't really have a place to do it. My cats would maul me over before I would even get through 30 minutes of it. Plus he's changing LED color, modding my browns to whites, and lubing stems/springs, etc etc. And he's awesome. So.

That plate will not allow you to service Cherry stabilizers.  The slot across the space bar is necessary to use plate mount stabs or pull the wire off PCB mount stabs if you need to for some reason.

In fact, why don't you deliver CONUS all by bike?
You get fit as hell, international buyers get their stickers the same time as you CONUS peeps.
And you can keep the postage money for bike stuff (= even faster delivery for CONUS!)

Pack of 50 board backed envelopes, £0.22 each.  Just an idea, the first one I found.  Though would need full A4 sized for a sheet of stickers?

I thought it dampens the noise as well as stabilizes the switch?  Obviously O-Rings don't stabilize, but they do dampen noise?  They dampen different noises, one is bottoming out vs pure switch noise...but still, I just imagined they were comparable (having tried neither).

Post by: alaricljs on Thu, 04 October 2012, 08:09:02
They do not dampen noise in any perceivable way.  They tighten the housing so perhaps it doesn't wobble as much... but I never noticed any housing wobble on my Filco without forcing it manually with a poke from a popsicle stick.

When I tried, it reduced rattling noise.

If you want to hear sound samples you can look for "cherry_blues_sticker_mod.zip" in the following link.

My Filco doesn't rattle.  So I looked at your pictures of some sound meter thing.   I believe I said "perceivable" which is to say someone's ears will not notice it, a machine doesn't count.

I did feel the difference in sound by the way. As a matter of fact, I think the difference in sound is the first thing you would notice when you do the sticker mod. The chart just shows what type of sound can be reduced. Did you download the sound samples? I guess not...

I've got boards without stickers and I've built boards with stickers... I haven't taken any of them into an anechoic chamber tho.  If you can actually hear it *live* without amplification, congrats you've got amazing ears, protect them.  You said you can feel it though, which is a whole different story than hearing it.

I can produce recordings where you would hear the most astonishing things, but you will never hear them with just your ears.
Title: Re: KOREAN SWITCH STICKER GROUP BUY! (RECEIVED)
Post by: limmy on Thu, 04 October 2012, 11:45:31
Well.. you can hear as much as you know. The difference in sound was the first thing I noticed and I disagree that the sticker will not change sound. Let's just leave it there.

@ for everyone how is getting the stickers:
When you start the sticker mod, I would recommend you lube the springs. Plastic safe thick lubricant shall do. I had some success with Victorinox multi-tool oil and Abu Garcia Reel oil. Some Koreans prefer LSD oils.

Once you do the mod, you would notice the spring scratching noise better because one element that added noise is no longer making noise. That is how I first felt when I did the mod. My keyboard was Poker so I didn't have to do any soldering, but if you have to solder, it would best to multiple things at once.

Assembly line technique is what I've always preferred.  If you're working with bare switches (unsoldered), do a single specialized task at a time, task by task.  This is how I go about my duties:

1)  Disassemble every switch.  Remove the top housing from the bottom, and separate the spring, stem and housing pieces.
2)  Since I don't have a switch plate, I use a propped up G80 PCB for slotting the switch bottoms in preparation.  So I put all the switch bottoms into the PCB to keep them in place and easy to work with.
3)  Begin lubing every spring and placing them into the switch bottom.
4)  Begin lubing every stem and placing them into the spring
5)  Snap on the top housing to complete the modified switch.

I got the stickers.

They measure about 0.10~0.11mm thick. The thickness is pretty similar to tape I have been using as an alternative.

I can imagine it would be very hard to put those stickers with bare hands. I would recommend you get a good pair of tweezers and line up the thinnest part of the sticker on the switch first. Hold the sticker with tweezers and use sharp object to stick it to the switch. Once you line up the thinnest part of the sticker, the rest should be pretty easy.

I can definitely hear the difference. Most of rattling sound is gone. The sound feels a bit dampened because higher frequency sound of rattling plastic was reduced. However you could still hear other parts of switches, so overall sound level seems to be the same.

If you want to verify what I find, try the stickers on a couple of switches (about 4 should be enough to hear and feel the difference) and compare the modded with unmodded. I would be surprised if you don't notice the difference. I only have PCB mounted boards, so I don't know if perceived difference is noticeable on plate mounted ones, but I am pretty sure that the effect would be similar.

tweezers = a must

I took the stickers off the sheet using the tweezers, just touching the corner of the sticker. I got the stickers over the slider, then I moved the thin "back" of the sticker past the "back" of the switch. I then move the sticker forward until both the back of the sticker and the switch were aligned. I then carefully put the  tweezers off the sticker and then push the sticker down onto the switch. You don't need to push the sticker down really hard and get a really good contact, because the switch top will do that for you anyways.

That explains a bit at least.  All the boards I've done/had are plate mount.  The plate would dampen rattle more since it's more mass holding the switch, any rattle should die off pretty quick.  Also the plate holds the 2 housing halves rather stable, it takes deliberate force to shift the top housing around.  Stickered plate mount switches are that much more stable/tight.  I also built the ultimate in brick-house stable... PCB mount switches stickered and mounted to a KMAC plate&PCB.  It sounds quite dead and feels extremely solid.

I missed the GB but am very curious on how the stickers would effect both sound and feel.
Thanks a lot for clearing up the sound part =)
Hearing the 'with keycap' clips, it appears that the stickers actually dampens the bottom out sound, would that be right?
As for the clicking itself, one with the sticker actually sounded like having a higher pitched sound.

Apart from the noise difference, do they alter typing feel in any significant way?

Mine arrived yesterday.
Thanks demik for this GB!

Anyone also has the feeling those stickers hold a switch better together than a plate?
My Filco switches seem to rattle more in the up/down direction than a PCB switch with sticker on my Poker...

Conclusion: I should have bought far more! :/
Title: Re: KOREAN SWITCH STICKER GROUP BUY! (RECEIVED)
Post by: Ian S on Wed, 14 November 2012, 09:54:02
The switches in my QPAD are not a tight fit in the plate.  The de-soldered switch, whilst fitted into the plate and PCB holes, has a few degrees of rotation available each way.

I probably won't fit them until I have the oils and other lube's to do that at the same time, as these QPAD switches all have an LED in the switch so that's double to de-soldering to do.

Mine arrived yesterday.
8 days later and mine haven't arrived yet.

No need to panic at this stage.  I'm just making another post really; 44 now :)

But I did get some O rings from WASD yesterday after only 8 days from purchase.  That seems pretty good really for normal post lately from USA to London.  Has often been two weeks for an envelope with small items.  Though when I get stuff from an Audio vendor in California it's often 4 days.

The best this year was Hong Kong to London in two days, posted on his Saturday lunch time, arrived on my Monday morning!!  Special Express Postal cost was £0.50 or something quite small!!  It often takes two days for post from one side of London to the other side!

Still nothing here.  What's it been, 4 weeks now?  Only Demik knows when they were posted and didn't say when exactly that was.

Demik did you get proof of postage?  I think four weeks is the longest for anything to get to me from the USA and that was only due to 'industrial action' at the post office or customs office here where the parcel had arrived there after three days and then sat there for 3½ weeks waiting for someone to clear the backlog.  I've had a few small items from the USA this year and 5 to 10 days I think they been.  And envelope can be 3 or 4 days.  Oh, yes, just remembered, a couple of weeks ago I had the WASD parcel; ordered to received in about 5 days.

If the stickers are lost, I'm thinking now that I'll have to make a PayPal claim for my money back or something.  There's a limited time to do that I think?

It's shame that this fell apart after Demik you seemed so keen and proactive at the beginning.  Then the simple and quick task of stuffing, labelling and posting out 55 envelopes seemed to be too difficult.  I don't know why people have such and enormously hard time with this aspect.  I was in a group buy early this year which the person seemed to overwhelmed with 100 small parcels and yet had spent evening after evening for weeks designing and prototyping the boards.  Many years ago I used to send that much out between arriving in the office and making the coffee.  Envelopes though not parcels, they take a while to make up the boxes, but even then I'd just stick at it for an hour or so and they're done.

Perhaps it would have been better to have posted all the European ones over to one reliable person who could have reposted them all the same day?

Things still get lost in the post sometimes.  I sent a CD player rubber drive belt to a friend on the other side of London and that never arrived.  The belt cost me about £10 as well.  He'd paid me so I had to buy and send another but in a thicker padded envelope that time.

bad news and good news.

bad news is. i got sent back about 12 envelopes but it didnt state why they got returned. everything seems perfectly fine, as i've double checked the address you gave me. this is the second time USPS does this (first time was a package to signapore, returned with no reason on it)

i have repackaged them and double checked everything (addresses mine and the person receiving them).

im currently taking some test so it wont be until next week i can send them again.

the good news, for you guys at least, is that i'll cover the shipping since it must have been a problem on my part. im going to see if it's possible to get a refund or partial refund from USPS to deal with the costs if not, no biggie. xmas bonus will cover it :)

again, i am truly sorry the wait.

i'll double check tonight to see who's stuff came back.

Sorry you've taken offence fella, but you been completely absent here.  You didn't confirm postage.  Nothing.  Quite a while between initially paying and your subsequent request for postage.  No confirmation.  Then a month goes by.  For all I know you didn't get any of my payments.

I've been bumped a few times for being too easy going and too trusting and lost my money.  How many times must a person let their trust be abused.  With eBay at least I realise that one has to be straight in there or lose out.  I have very much less patience these days than I used to.

And I was right wasn't I?  They were missing.  That's not my fault either.

I've run, or administered or overseen, a few group buys for my own club.  Busy or not, I don't leave people uninformed.  Anyway if I did the crap hits the fan quite fast.  I also over see the classifieds and recently I had to ban someone for taking payments and not sending good to some of the people.  He'd been member for a while and was trusted.  I had to prepare to use cops and lawyers and it wasted my time.  Not for the first time either, we successfully sued another trusted member before as he did a group buy, took the money and didn't send any goods.  And I just recalled a few times more, it causes a load of aggro for months first usually while we try and get their good delivered or money back.  I'm grumpy old man now with a harsh temperament toward this kind of thing.

Now what we normally do for group buys is the club collects the payments and pays for the goods.  I'm doing one now for shock absorber kits, £300 for a set of Koni, 12 people on the list.  That's a big risk for member of a club to just trust another member and too big a risk from my (the clubs) point of view to trust member with that much in light of what's happened before.  And if someone drops out it's not a problem, and there usually a queue for spares, as there was with these Korean Stickers.  Earlier this year we did one for bespoke stainless 4 into 1 exhaust manifolds, eventually it grew to 27 or so people in all so I bought 30. All non profit just to help the community.

Demik is trustworthy, and it's not his fault if an envelope or two gets lost (or just takes more time to arrive than usual) in the mail. So why would you punish him for something he couldn't control?

I suggest asking for insured shipping next time you order something in a group buy.

As I just posted, that's why in my car club the club now pays the initial payment to remove the risks from the organiser.  And in this stickers case we all paid in advance anyway....so you must be making some other point....err....I bought 4 sheets, that's not the issue.  Left dangling for weeks with no comm's at all is the issue.
Demik is trustworthy
with 7000 posts I presumed that.
and it's not his fault if an envelope or two gets lost
Apparently it's 12, that's about 23% or so of the total quantity so something's gone very wrong there somewhere.  After this amount of time I felt, correctly as it transpired, it was fair to presume they were missing presumed dead, and something needed to be done.  The time for patience was over.

I'm wasn't punishing Demik, just prompting a bit to get a response.  The damn noise the MX board is p1ssing me of and I need to do something about it.

I've bought many small items from the USA, over 15 years, including this year, sent by uninsured USPS and never had a problem before.  Usually they arrive here in 3 to 5 days.  Though for a time they usually took two weeks, that I think was due to slow methods at the regional postal office here or if VAT and fees were being added.  I had a FedEx delivery from Digikey that was about two days IIRC, and they billed for the VAT and fees later.

None of my business, but let me just get this straight...

You personally didn't opt for insurance on your package, and are attempting to blame the seller for shipping issues?  Your reason being you've had many a successful shipped package in the past?  I don't know how your auto insurance laws work over there, but here in the U.S. if you tried to tell a judge that you didn't buy insurance because you've been driving accident free for years...he'd laugh and make you buy insurance.

Mine arrived at my USA address yesterday (I think). Hope this hasn't been too much of a headache for you.
Thanks again for dealing with it.

I hope I'm not sounding like a douchbag but you should read the description.

"They go in between the bottom and top of the sticker housing. They are suppose to dampen the noise and stabilize the switch a little more."

Yeah, sure enough its right there in post #1.  Don't worry about sounding like a douche, thanks for answering the question!

Did anyone order extra stickers that they're willing to part with?  I just ordered two phantom PCB's so I could use one or two sheets if anyone is willing to part with them, I don't care about color, I only want them for functionality.  I'll pay double what you paid for them to make up for your trouble of going through the GB.

Thanks

I think the general consensus is 95% cosmetic and 5% placebo.

They 'slightly' reduce noise, but the nonsense of preventing the top of the housing from sliding around is nonsense, really.

Tell me how many of you make the top of your switch housing slide when normally typing....?

0% cosmetic, unless you type without your caps on.

Or store with keycaps off. But yes, not a significant benefit (and yet $7 a sheet at GH stores).

Like gold springs? Or do those serve some other purpose too? Again, I'm new and am trying to learn.

Gold springs are stiffer than their non-plated counterparts.
