Title: Let's talk about facial hair.
Post by: Internetlad on Wed, 26 September 2012, 11:44:56
Who has it! What kind do you have? Van Dyke? Full beard? Simply Sideburns? Full on Mutton Chops! Neckbeards for you Linux. . . Enthusiasts?

I never really grew out my beard until about a year ago. I've got a Van Dyke thing going on off and on. I've grown it out about 3 times over the past year. I have this weird little place near the corners of my mouth where my hair doesn't fully come in, and right under my chin i don't get the little strap. Kind of sad but other than that it comes in okay.

I'm not really experienced with shaving it so the main reason I shaved down to bare skin the first two times is that I irreparably shaved in too far :(

It can be a real hassle to keep it looking good and even when I only shave with my right hand. I've seen products that you hold up to your face as kind of a guideline about where to shave, and I know it's retarded but i'll be honest, I've considered it.

Anyways that's my story, feel free to post pics, questions or comments about facial hair!

Same here, I only shave once a week. The only person who really gets any facial hair is my brother but it's only on his neck lol

The hair has been growing for over 1.5 years; the beard was started maybe 8-9 months ago but I trim it frequently (my facial hair is too coarse and rigid for comfort when extra long)!

My beard gets coppery in the summer from the sun, but when I trim it for the last time each year (around the beginning of September), it stays dark until the following summer.  I have a streak running from the left corner of my mouth down (widening as it goes) under my chin... weird.

I accepted a job offer today at Breckenridge Resort in CO, and the grooming standards are no dreadlocks (long hair must be combed) and established full beards permitted (but must be trimmed to 3/4") so it looks like the bearded hippie look will continue to live on for at least another couple seasons!

Sideburns here - since I was 15 in fact (I'm not sure I remember what not having them looks like it's been that long!)  None other than that - a good DE shave every other day means I get through a lot of razors but they're dirt cheap compared to standard razor blades & better too!

I've always wanted to get acquainted with straight razors. I've heard once you've gotten used to them it turns shaving into a more personal experience.

I personally dislike shaving as well as much of my other morning routine. I like having a fresh mouth, hair and body but hate dragging myself out of bed for brushing my teeth, shaving, showering etc. I think this is mostly because i'm perpetually running late for whatever i'm doing so i'm running out the door like a madman.

Anybody have experience with straight razors? I know that you can get a foam warmer (?) and a straight razor and turn shaving into a pleasurable experience.

Downsides is I have 2 sons who both want to "shave like daddy" which could lead to some . . . less than ideal situations.

Currently using a Gilette something or other safety razor. Fusion? that one that had the "OHMAHGERD NO GLIDE" commercials about 2 years back. Been using exclusively Barbasol for years now. Love the smell but hate it when it comes out of the can on cold mornings and freezes my face.

I know that straight razors aren't for the perpetual late riser.  And that's not just from a safety standpoint, it's a slower process as you usually make two -three passes before hair is fully gone.
Title: Re: Let's talk about facial hair.

I've always been hoping to get into a better routine. Early to bed, Early to rise. Eggs and toast in the morning. Clean house, PGTV family.

Hasn't happened yet. Woke up at 9:07 and skipped breakfast (drank some milk quickly from the jug, that'll hold till lunch.) and hopped in the shower. My 3 year old son walked up to me this morning and inoccently asked "YOU SAY ****, DADDY?" (I hadn't, incidentally) as I was getting out of the shower. gave the teefs a quick brush and bypassed shaving. Was already late for work as I got out of bed but I work in a service center and my workload is light today so it doesn't much matter if the boss is in a good mood.

If he's in a bad mood then anything to nitpick at is going to become a huge issue. I guess we're all like that though.

DE shaving is the same - given time for a good pre-shave regimen and ample time for a few passes it can't be beaten (in my opinion).  If you're in a rush it's nowhere near as good or as satisfying...

GeorgeK is right. I started waking up an hour earlier than usual just to allow time to shave properly with a DE (and just generally be up earlier). Shaving with cartridge razors was horrible for me. When I learned of wetshaving, it changed my life. With proper prep, technique, and tools, your shaves can be outstanding and enjoyable. I would recommend it to anyone. My friend has converted. He never used to shave because it was not good for him. The most he would do is trim with clippers. It's weird seeing him clean shaven all the time. He is of the mindset of getting good shaves and saving money. As you can see by my wiki and pictures, this is more of a hobby for me. Mostly because of the change in my life, but look at everything. There is so much beauty in the tools, so many options in the software. I love it.

Totally agree - it's not so much of a hobby for me (at the moment) but just a pleasure - had to shave with a Mach 3 for the first time in a long time not that long ago and it was dreadful...  I have just picked up a 1960 Gilette Superspeed however so maybe it's going to become a hobby...

I have been shaving on a bi-annual schedule myself.  Bear and hair gets done twice a year with the old trust clippers when the weather is appropriate ( Early Spring, late Summer).  My beard isn't great, but for my lineage I am quite adapt.  Wife does get annoyed by it but I end up cutting her hair as well when she feels the mode (just a trim for her though, she won't let me buzz it).

I had a mustache for almost 30 years straight. When I shaved it off 15 years ago my upper lip felt cold for weeks, my kids would laugh at me every time they saw me and I'd habitually wipe my face after every bite of food I ate for months. The mustache was a real food trap.

An amazing but true anecdote.-----  One morning,  during my daily mirror routine, I noticed an anomaly.  I found a hair growing from my mustache over my mouth at least a half inch longer than the rest.  Upon further analysis and a slight tug I discovered it was growing from my nose- it must have been2 inches long! It must have unraveled during an aggressive nose blow or something.

I have never since been able to replicate the feat (nor have I tried). I wish I had possessed  the good judgement to have taken a picture as it may have been the most interesting thing that has ever happened to me.

Oh the ol' rogue hair. Happens to the best of us. The fact that it was a nose hair is a welcome twist!  Apparently when I was an infant my dad shaved his mustache and my brother and I cried whenever we saw him. Needless to say he has kept the mustache ever since.

Eeewwwwww rogue nose hair!!!

When I shaved my year's growth beard a couple of months ago my 1-year-old daughter was afraid of me too.

I remember quite a few years ago now I pestered my dad to shave off his beard (since I couldn't remember a time when he hadn't had one) - eventually one day he did and I couldn't stop laughing - it looked really wierd!  Needless to say he grew it back and hasn't shaved it off since!

Since Ive been out of the Army I've had a goatee (going on 2 years now) and all the years leading up to it in highschool. Here's a pic from my wedding (Was in May) so it's recent, hasn't changed.

I've had sidies since my year 12, but just in the last month decided to try my hand at a moustache :P  It's not working out too well, but I don't care.  It's amusing.

That being said - I CAN grow one mean neckbeard xD  I just choose not to :P

There IS hope, don't worry.

My mustache wouldn't grow in and connect to my chin hair until I was 21. Stand strong my friend!

Congratulations! One sick goatee!

Thanks and thanks!

Congratulations on your recent marriage. Your wife is a lot cuter than anything you could type on. Remember that when you think about spending too much time on Geekhacks!

I wish the best for the two of you.

Thanks! She definitely is. I spend most of my time on GH either when she's at work, or reading. Or the occasional time she's mad at me =P

But don't worry, I have my priorities in order. ;P

My dad was telling about when he was in the Navy, shaving was a daily routine.  Well, he said he took the razor out of his shaving tool, as he couldn't grow much facial hair.  Fast forward about 40 years, here I am, at 30 years old, I only need to shave about every 3 or 4 days.  Every other day if i want to look really clean.

this was just after it got trimmed up a bit, but it's growing out even more now!!! I'm not gonna touch it until the end of ski season and then trim it down to a little over 5 o'clock shadow length. I haven't fully shaved in over 4 years and I'm damn proud of it :D

I got lucky, my grandfather on my mothers side was a championship winning beard grower, so I have good pedigree.

I don't particularly do photographs... this is probably the most recent picture of me stolen at a friends weeding a few months ago - I keep it trimmed at about that length give or take, a bit longer at the moment, but not for much longer.
