Just get an email ready, and send it at 3. Boss shouldn't notice a quick little email :)

Whats "weak" is the amount of hoops I have to jump through to get a sale up.

As for the time zone issue. I usually and sadly have to settle on what confuses people the least. It's counterintuitive to be sure.

With the internet and the worlds information just inches from our fingertips I still get people asking what time it is. I can say almost whatever I want
but people will still get it wrong or flood me with questions regarding it. I'm just trying to roll with it.

Im in the California/Los Angeles USA time zone.

This should be sufficient. Unfortunately when many look at time zones and time zone maps they interpret them inccorectly.

This might make it simpler: in how many hours can we start flooding your inbox with orders?

Title: Re: clack sale today
Post by: alaricljs on Fri, 28 September 2012, 14:40:30
so in the thread for the sale today it says the sale is at 3PM PDT, but then it mentions UTC/GMT-7 which would be mountain time

what the hell is going on--

Ok, CF wants people schooled on timezones... GMT-7 is Mountain STANDARD which is not the current timezone in the Mountain zone, it's also Pacific DAYLIGHT, which IS the current TZ for Pacific.  When DST changes in November (or whenever the F they changed it to) then it will not be PDT it will be PST in California which will be GMT-8.

So right now... California is in PDT, PDT is GMT-7 and 3PM PDT is 10:00PM GMT/UTC

^ Just to help you... You can do a countdown like Glissant did on his auction which would alliviate confusion for everyone in regards to Daylight Savings etc. Also, to upload an image(for next sale or whenever) host the image somewhere and use [ IMG]insert link here[ /img] <--Take the spaces out, but just for future use:)

And this behavior isn't always consistent. They have hotfixes for various OSes to "fix" this behavior. So, if you have a machine that isn't completely up to date it can be even more confusing.

you would think it would offset the value in the list but I guess that would make sense and prevent confusion so clearly no one thought to do that

/me wonders if every email that comes in at 2:59 (by clack's 'puter) gets rejected...

was wondering about this one too since things that should be the same for everyone aren't the same since ha ha ha h HA HA HA HA HOW DOES SENSE MAKERY OCCUR

Hi SF, thanks for the suggestions. I really like the idea of the countdown, I must have missed it in his auction and I don't see it now. Is there a link or similar I can grab and put in a post for future releases? I did a very crude version of this early on but I like the idea of it being done in a more automatic (hands off) way.

As for the uploads, figuring it out is not the problem, though I appreciate the kind gesture. The issue is that I don't really have internet access (long story, to make it short I won't tell you). So the internet and computer that I am forced to use many times is unfortunately a restricted one. These are not situations that I can easily change at the moment.

So essentially, no, I've never bought a lotto ticket because my luck is just that bad. lol

So, the question I have now is.. Should I order all three or just the one I can use?
I am thinking that I could trade the others, even I can't use them.

You can generate the countdown by using the page WRXChris linked to: http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/create

And then you get something like this:
Hack Orange Sale Countdown (http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/to?iso=20120928T15&p0=137&fg1=ff6724&fg2=b3b3b3&msg=Hack+Orange+Sale)

I don't understand why you guys like "skulls" so much. What's the draw.?

The other ones he make looks cool n all, but why the skulls?????
Title: clack sale today
Post by: imersa on Fri, 28 September 2012, 15:36:47
Gotta love skulls! They just rule in general! Eternia!
Title: Re: clack sale today
Post by: clickclack on Fri, 28 September 2012, 15:41:55
For many reasons I would think. Why do we appreciate and/or covet anything?
The skulls thus far have been a bit more available than some of the other works. So I would imagine the general "draw" would be towards them.
And what can I say other than- "cool things are cool".

Ones Preferences are not the same as ones understanding and they often cloud the reasoning of the other.

Check his vendor forum! Also, iMav can we get stats of how many people log on tonight to that page/how much the site's popularity went up?

I actually don't think it will change much if at all since this will be done in emails this time.

And for those curious, one of the recurring problems was that some thought the GMT/UTC times change. I don't think this will be a problem anymore though with the countdown link available. Pheew.  =)

When I was in my account and watching the coundown timer which seemed to luckily match my computer, I saw a gentle trickle of emails coming in the seconds leading to 3:00pm. The moment the clock hit 3:00 BAM! There was an impossible amount of emails. That's right, I said impossible! lawlz. Then they just started pouring in and slowed waaay down towards the end of the first minute, (by these standards, you know, relatively speaking) and then just steadily ran in for the following ten minutes. Jogged in for the next 30 minutes or so. Now it's mostly like whack-a-mole status.

Well, it certainly is a crap shoot, as someone mentioned above. Imagine 100 or more emails flowing into and Inbox at the same time. It is nothing but luck. I made it in and he told me, somehow I was the first one he received. I can assure you there was no magic. On my end I simply clicked sent while using the GMAIL website and sitting on an open wireless connection at Panera Bread. I clicked the send at 00:00:01 (before the timer hit 0) on the atomic clock, as I am sure many other did. It's simply luck.

WRXChris ... that entered my mind. The wife and i were on the road traveling for 2 hours before the sale, to a Cardinal's game in St. Louis. I had lots of time to think and being an IT guy i tld her the same thing, that I should maybe use her Hotmail account to send from because it would probably be delivered faster. I did not. Does anyone else feel that CCs are at the core of one part of the community, and killing another part of the community? Someone one second late doesn't get one? We don't even have an idea how many there were, or even pictures of what they look like and we all went bonkers. I vote more oversight into CCs but I'm just crazy and and my tinfoil cap needs repairs.

yeah, i had a hotmail account back in the late 90s when they were the (best?) free email provider.  My family members also had hotmail accounts, and I quickly learned that emails between hotmail accounts happen instantaneously, while emails from other servers consistently arrive late, sometimes extremely late.  I should have remembered that, but I also sent my order from my gmail account :(

If it was over in seconds, why have it open for so long? I was 5mins late r something like that with my email... Would have rather just been closed and missed it rather than foolishly thinking I had a chance...

cc couldn't have anticipated that kind of demand, even with the recent prices his caps have been fetching.  Public sales have been crazy in the past and have been known to bring GH down, so I would assume that cc was prepared for a lot of orders.  Not to mention the mainstream public attention ripster brought with the reddit ad.  Not that that's a bad thing, first time gratuitous cc owners are better than flippers in my book!

it's all good! i already have lots of cc's and I'm sure that others with lots of cc's got more which is fine, but I'm glad to know that the cc's I didn't get went to new GH'ers who are getting their first chance to see and appreciate clickclack's awesome art!

@ WRX ... Whip it may be a benefit I still think it is 100% luck and completely Undeterminal. With that many people involved there are probably some sending 5 seconds early, some 4, 3, 2 and so forth. I just think with the limited variables one can control it is almost 100% luck.

I totally agree. And to boot, I believe it breeds dissonance for people who always get left out in the cold. I have one CC and I would like more, but am ultimately and vastly unlucky and find 4Grabs almost laughable at this point(laughing is healthier then crying...I think.) My friend who is a recent GH'er was pumped for the sale after seeing my mint green, he stayed home from work and even submitted(he says) right as the counter hit zero and now is just bummed out. On top of all that I would bet my sweet bippy there's a few scumbags out there setting up multiple accounts to snatch up a bunch for the sole purpose of selling them for a huge mark up. That right there is toxic. I would say there must be a more fair way, like perhaps a rotating list, but I don't even know anymore.

meh, you're wasting your time. this has been brought up multiple times. no matter how many times it's talked about, nothing will change. it's not fair for CC either to keep a running list of who to exclude from what sale.

people will continue to act like these are crack and they need their fix. same 4-5 people too.

I think a rotating list sounds great.. but I'm sure they'll be loads of people pissed because they must have every single CC they can get their hands off.

The worst kinds are the ones that buy the CCs deliberately to get a profit out of it , with no intention of keeping them whatsoever

donate that money to a homeless shelter. buy a homeless person lunch with that cash. donate it to hopeforpaws.org, your local shelter or any organization helping out the less fortunate.

At least your first time wasn't during the ultimate server choke sale; an hour + of attempted ordering to get fed up and leave and come back to find out I also missed out on invitations. Like I said, continue laughing at people paying $200 for them, it's more fun. I just wish cc had a gallery similar to the old one showing all of the unique designs.

My personal motto for this place is; "Wanna flip?"

there is no need to be bitter.

if they want to pay 200, their problem. it's not coming out of your pocket.

you should laugh at the fact you've gotten so worked up over it instead. now that is hilarious. especially the part where you're trying to play it off like you don't care.

look on the bright side.

didn't get a CC?

donate that money to a homeless shelter. buy a homeless person lunch with that cash. donate it to hopeforpaws.org, your local shelter or any organization helping out the less fortunate.

you'll feel better about yourself and you'll stop dwelling over a piece of plastic you didn't get.

I guess it's the expectation vs result that disappoints some people. but you're right haha.

I can't laugh as on the two CCs I own they combined cost me probablly over $200... It just kinda sucks that it realistically the only way I'm going to be able to get any CCs is to pay silly amounts

I exactly hit midnight (germany)

Woah! People need to calm down! I didn't get in on it either but I have learnt that that is the way with CC's. How can you be suprised that it was over within the first few seconds?

CC's are only valued like this because they are so hard to obtain and so mysterious, the caps themselves are awesome little cubes of art which also helps!

I like the CC craziness, life would be damn boring if we could all get everything whenever we want.

there is no need to be bitter.

if they want to pay 200, their problem. it's not coming out of your pocket.

you should laugh at the fact you've gotten so worked up over it instead. now that is hilarious. especially the part where you're trying to play it off like you don't care.

How is wanting to oogle over his designs "pretending not to care"? I never said I didnt care, but keep interpreting my words the way you wish.

& yes it's not coming out of my pocket, I just wish the triple digit coin was going to CC. then maybe he could do MORE AWESOME. I would gladly buy his art for $50+ If I knew it was going where it should. Stay salty.

CC is perfectly aware of how much he could make but he must be happy with what he currently does get per cap so don't worry about it.

It can take months to get your first clack, don't expect it to be easy.

Very few people buy them to flip for a profit.

Gmail has two functions, "unsend" and "undo send", which allow you to take back a message during a couple of seconds after you have pressed send. How does it work? Well, it doesn't actually send the message until those seconds have passed.

There, now you all know why I failed.

They were sold out by the 1 second mark. However we don't really know if 10 people got in or 80 people. If anything the mystery of not knowing how many were available is what infuriates everyone.

You people should be ashamed of your selves, for complaining. He seems open for suggestions, like how WRXChris (I think) made the suggestion for the timer and hey happily added it. Imagine if that werne't there. You'd all be complaining about non-uniform timing standards, or something. Instead of complaining, try and come up with some constructive suggestions to make the system more fair.

I didn't luck out on this sale as when he posted he was preparing to shield I was thinking that was a 'get ready' signal not the 'go' signal. Live and learn. I like these types of sales. For electronic cigarettes, there is a prized item called the JonBoy Lava Tank, which comes in many designs and colors. The sales were just like this, a free for all cross your fingers and pray deal. I got lucky sometimes, others I didn't. But the adrenaline rush of the sale and having a prized work of art to boot makes these sales a load of fun for me.

How would locking this thread prevent people from getting mad for not getting one? I don't have anything against you, SmallFry, but I just don't see your point. Oh, I think your point is that we should do everything we can to NOT piss off clickclack. That should be the new motto of Geekhack, instead of "wanna switch?," it can now be "Don't piss off clickclack."

I think a lottery would have been more fair, instead of relying on the luck of which routes your email takes through the servers to get to the recipient. And then maybe he could do another lottery for the next sale, and exclude the people who got them this time, in order for more people to be able to get them. Just my suggestion.

I really love looking at his work and random pics are the only real way to even see what he has done for most people so having them in one place would be nice

Here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33569.0)?

And yet no where near first. You were the "first" however to miss out on "C".  lol and =(
I was able to get you a "B", in it's place though. =)

good thing I made this thread which caused you to create the countdown timer so I could screw myself out of one of those then.  you're welcome, whoever else got one!

5) It appears that the countdown clock sped up the sale by a huge factor! It seemed to be much more universally reliable and accurate than some previous means. It also seemed to have helped those who might have missed out because they were previously unable to figure out the time zones.

You're welcome.

p.s. this is me begging and pleading for you to hook a glaze-eyed froth-mouthed keycap hungering beast up

edit: i don't think quick > luck when you're going by a countdown timer linked to the official time and you're aware of every interstitial element dictating whether or not something happened at a particular time and you invoke a few hundred millisecond delay upon the paranoid precept that you might somehow arrive EARLY despite the timer based upon some discrepancy somewhere or another

so luck > thinking about things thoroughly and understanding that at some point without a more precise measuring device than the human mind there is absolutely no degree of skill or distinction to be drawn.

also: http://typingzone.com/?page=contest_en #3 see: typeracer.com, etc so quick isn't an issue for me.  I am one of the fastest typists alive, I know too much about information systems, and this thing happens so quickly that it is simply just random, and only.

not complaining, just saying since i prefer accurate conclusions

edit 2: thinking about how i live on the east coast and he lives on the west coast and the delicate interplay between all the disparate systems perhaps haphazardly connected and all the factors which come into play in a less-than-one-second-world, oh my mind

edit 3: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=36055.0 now there's a thread with someone wanting to trade something i wanted for something i could have easily had were it not for this here thread

Again, congrats to those who got them!  I shouldn't have waited that second to click send, and that seems to be the lesson here (+ a bit of luck).

It seems the email servers and the countdown website are all on atomic time, as I just noticed this: {Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2012 18:00:02 -0400}  Unfortunately that doesn't tell me when it hit cc's inbox though, and that's where the luck comes in to play!

Finally got the mail saying what I got! I also got A and B, so I'm a bit sad I missed the buckling spring one, which was the one I wanted the most as I got my first Model M (SSK) the day before yesterday. Will be sure to abuse the MX and Topre ones more to compensate for that.

snoopy, yeah, they must've been really limited edition. I waited one second before sending my email, because I thought that if I sent it exactly when the clock turned 3PM it could've arrived a second too early or something. :D

So congrats to all who got C (and/or the other two)!

Actually, CC, if you're reading this thread: I'd like numbers! How many were produced, how fast each kind sold out, et cetera. Guess you're a bit too busy for that at the moment though. :)

And what if I do want it but am willing to let other people have fun with them, too?

Maybe I also wanted to get another CC key instead (which seems to be a secondary use for them) and thought this was a more fiscally sound way of doing that?  Or should I just pay $200 - $500 for what I want and ignore when people ***** that they're getting sold for 10-20x initial payment?

Well most of the collectors stuff they sell, they sell through a Japan ONLY store (Konami Style .jp) so alot of jap's buy things from there for pretty cheap, tripple the price and sell it on to us western ****s...

And the next big collectors edition box you can ONLY get via lottery prize draw from this store.. and then you have to still pay £250 for it... so god knows how much that will end up being when a non jap can buy one

Why?
It is easier to determine the value of something if you know how many exist for starters. Another good reason would be for people to say maybe, "Well only 10 were for sale my chances were pretty slim" and not get too upset. Or maybe they might be able to say, "holy crap 80 CCs sold out in one second? That is amazing."

Then again buying CCs is like buying Giclées (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gicl%C3%A9e). It isn't the original art just a copy of it. It just so happens that since it is a relatively easy item to create from a mold, several different colors can be produced. I think it would be pretty cool if original carvings of clacks were sold for hundreds or thousands of dollars (micro art) after the molds were made, and then the "Giclée" versions could be mass produced and sold relatively cheap so that everyone can have one. This is how real art works. This also would lead to new originals being created all the time. No one buys a poster of the Mona Lisa for $15 and then immediately resells it for $100 when it comes in the mail. The original CC Skull was art, every copy afterwards is just...a copy. I could be wrong maybe every single key is hand carved and art, but I don't have enough for a comparison.

The BMX keycaps have a pretty high profile more suited for BS.  It's pretty nice on MX, but sticks out pretty high similar to K-series QWERKeys keycaps =)
Title: Re: clack sale today
Post by: SmallFry on Sat, 29 September 2012, 20:58:03
Then CC would just have to make the stem lower in the MX section. New mold, can't imagine it would be that hard.
Title: Re: clack sale today
Post by: DanGWanG on Sat, 29 September 2012, 21:01:10
The keycap itself is much taller.  Imagine putting a BS keycap on a Cherry MX keyboard, it's very tall

Wow I didn't know this thread existed in the off topic section. I just read through it, and it's rather sad how people get their panties up in a bunch about this. I was super busy on Friday, but still made time to camp out for 3 hours before the sale, sent my email at 3:00:01 pm PST and did not get one. I'm not mad or sad, not even one bit. People gotta realize that tons of people want one really bad, and obviously not everyone will get one. Life goes on, and if you're upset about his, that's your loss. Just try again next time, no big deal. Not everyone wins the lottery, otherwise it wouldn't be a lottery.

Btw, I sent my order in a second after the countdown, but how do I find out what time CC actually received the email? When I view source, I can only see what time I sent it, not what time it was received. I sent mine from MSN email. I guess next time I'll try hotmail.

If everyone could buy one do you really think many people would? It would ruin the fun, the mystery and the chase.

I like not knowing how many of each skull are out there, they are all little cubes of art and should be treated as such.

Everyone can buy one if they want to but you have to spend the money just like every other rare or highly regarded item.

Post by: nntnam on Sun, 30 September 2012, 03:33:33
We would never know how many each color was made. That's the funniest part of the CC market. You can look at the market price of each color to guess the rarity of it. I guess the good place to look at is the CC auction.
Title: Re: clack sale today

The truth is CC only made one of each cap just to mess with everyone and is sustaining his love in a disappointment powered emotion cryogenic chamber in his lab. The machine is directly linked to GH servers and must feed on your sadness to keep his love alive long enough for him to build her a life suite made of discarded keycaps. After which they will roam the planet with their robotic dogs Knick and Knack to search for a cure.

Yeah his oranges happen to be a bit red shifted. Might have less to do with the specific programed color balance though since it's a very deep rich orange that many devices likely have a hard time picking up. Saturated oranges often get clipped or blow out the red channel regardless of cb.

Are you sure that has anything to do with candy...?

Cough syrup tastes like liquid death, and I'd rather drink that than eat black licorice

When's the last time you had cough syrup?  I remember as a kid taking Phenergan, that **** is nasty.  These days cough syrup is stupid tasty compared to that.

I still haven't got a confirmation that clack got my payment. I used the Paypal app so I hope it didn't mess it up.

Here's hoping I get an email today...

Have you signed into PayPal and checked? Sometimes I don't get emails about shipping. And I sign in and see that things have been updated.
Yep, just checked. All it says is completed.

Woah, woah. You've gone too far there. Black licorice is literally Satan's candy.
You should try double salted black licorice, that taste still haunts me to this day

Skulls are cute decorations for halloween but nothing more. Or if you're 6 years old and into old cartoons....maybe.

They're not. The stem is just grey. If you look closer you can see the glue.

Basically, you miss the main sale. But got an order in soon enough to have first dibs on the extras.
