Title: What's everyone do with all their keyboards?
Post by: Quasimojo on Sat, 19 January 2013, 21:25:50: Do you keep them on a shelf, just taking a different one down on occasion to enjoy for a while? Do you have some sort of keyboard lazy Susan that you use to just dial up whichever board you get a hankerin' for any given day? Do you just keep them enshrined in a dust free, temp controlled display case?

I'm about to order my first mechanical keyboard (KBT Pure), but something tells me I'm going to want to own more, so I can enjoy a variety of switch types, layouts, etc. I was just wondering what I might do with 'em all.

Bonus points for pics.

I currently have 5 keyboards and I don't regularly use 3 of them. One because I don't like browns anymore and two that I don't use because they aren't programmed and I'm not quite used to their layouts

Well, like I said, I'm getting ready to buy my first mechanical, but the fact that I've had such a tough time picking one, I do see more in my future. All cheap rubber dome stuff now. It's sad that the best keyboard I own is on my laptop - granted it *is* a ThinkPad.

I will have to start a thread here in a bit showing off a bit of what I have. It is a pretty insane collection, some really rare stuff. Probably up to about 300 pairs also.

If a new design, like a wireless compact keyboard comes out, then i will buy it and sell at least 2 of my keyboards. Also, my family thinks i am crazy for buying keyboards. I do wear the really rare ones too though, which lots of people think I am insane for. But they are shoes and meant to be worn. I'll have to start a thread here soon and post up some of the rarer pairs and such.

Removing all the caps on a daily basis gives me headache but I try to clean it every now and then :)

I can't stop laughing. From that post without the sneaker context it really did sound like I was wearing keyboards. I suppose I don't have any keyboard sneakers. Guess I need to make some? A keyboard as jewelry may be easier than as a sneaker though.

Apart from that, about 50 keyboards are just collecting dust in the closet. Some are leftovers after group buys (goldtouch), some are full-size gaming keyboards w/ Cherry MX Black (I used them prior to the choc mini), the rest are mostly vintage keyboards I saved from being thrown away. I want to get rid of most of them eventually.

What's the point of having premium boards if you can't show them off at work? Just put a "do not steal" sticker on it. :))

My Filco with blues stays behind my monitors as I only get that out when I want to play with blues, which isn't all that often so I might consider selling it, and my QFR reds and Filco with browns stay on my desk next to each other so that I can freely switch between them.

Then I bough a couple "expensive", so I thought at the time, Logitech boards. Then I started researching ergonomic boards, which is how I found out about mechanical switches. I bought a Das with blues, which led me to this site, which in turn led me to Elite Keyboards and the ultimate in keyboard switches: topre! Now my Logitech boards sit in storage with my Das to keep them company. I've been meaning to sell them I just haven't got around to it yet.

I currently have 3 keyboards on my desk and the model M SSK and regular size within reach. It's a sick thing really. Today I've switched between the 3 currently on the desk, depending on what I'm doing. I'm finding I like certain keyboards for certain things. :p

I use my Filco TKL as my main keyboard. Along with that, I have a generic mini keyboard (usb) and IBM Model M (ps2) nearby on the upstairs test bench connected to my server KVM in the basement, but my DAS will be replacing both. I have a (slightly damaged) Logitech Illuminated that is downstairs on the server KVM, but the KBT Race will replace it once the switches are re-installed, I cannibalized it for my Filco. I also have a second Logitech illuminated that I loaned to my mom when her Kensington started sticking (she likes scissor switches). After that the damaged Illuminated and Model M will join the other Model M that is damaged, along with my (stripped and torn apart) Black Widow Ultimate in the spare parts bin.

I was actually thinking of of making like a "quick draw" holder that holds each of my keyboards vertical and organized ready to pull out whichever one i want to use easily and quickly and have each slot have a different height for each board so that they all line up the same on the top level :D

and i have just started this addiction in September because lets be honest people, this is an addiction. kind of like how my wife has like 3 large tubs filled with handbags that she rarely or never uses, the difference is i use all my keyboards :D i find it more ergonomic with all the different layouts and switches.

My rubber dome IBM, I bought on the cheap as a stopgap during a time when I had no other working keyboards, and the Model M I bought on a whim, don't really enjoy using, but don't have the heart to sell as it's the only "contrast" in my collection (and when I have family visiting without their own electronics, they tend to like using it better than the Tank).

From a practical perspective, it'd actually be nice to have a second usable keyboard, so that I'm not forced to use something sub-optimal anytime I spill something into the primary keyboard and have to wait several days for it to dry out after washing. Unfortunately, nobody makes something close enough to what I want for me to lay out money

My G80-8113 is a backup/parts board, oh and the BTC. Hahahaha BTC. I should post some pictures of that. It's a real sight.

I still haven't found any buckling springs to try.

My Razer Blackwidow Ultimate is used for gaming and at the moment, navigation around Windows 8 as well.

A set of drawers designed specifically to house keyboards would be awesome. It may also alleviate some of the guilt noted above.

My Topre HE0100 for on top of my laptop. My Realforce, Filco and G84 rotate between my desktop, work and fighting games on the PS3.

However, given the number of projects that I'm involved in and the fact that I still haven't found my goldilocks keyboard yet, I expect that I'll have more and I want to do them justice, which is why I asked the question Do You Display Your Keyboards? Of all the answers, I think the best example thus far has been CeeSA's Keyboard Shelf (http://deskthority.net/photos-videos-f8/keyboard-shelf-t1431.html).

Post by: samwisekoi on Fri, 01 February 2013, 13:11:23: At home I have a dual monitor set-up with a TKL under one and a 104-key (full-size) under the other monitor. I normally use the TKL unless I am doing spreadsheets or something else that needs the 10-key pad, and then I pull the other one out.

At work I use this gen-u-wine IBM Model M and have a Unicomp clone nearby as a backup.

And in a carry-around case I have my Poker 60% or a 75%.

Others are on shelves in my office, on-loan to people I really trust, or in my project pile.

Oddly enough I bring my pure if I want to feel the most comfortable somewhere. I'm surprised how this keyboard grew on me.

That's the thing. I don't use a laptop. I have software-matching Linux boxes at home and at the office and a big i7/Win7 rendering machine at work and a portable ITX i5/WIn7 rendering machine to take home when I need to work on video after hours. So I keep an interesting keyboard in a Leopold 200 TKL soft case with whatever work stuff I need and take that home and back. And if I am somewhere else and have to work on some random "guest" computer or laptop, I can just plug in a proper keyboard and there I go. The Poker or the Choco Mini take up no space and weigh nothing, but if I am gonna be typing on someone else's computer for an hour or two I have a proper keyboard. And my Corsair Voyager USB 3.0 flash drive comes along with me as well, so I can keep all my stuff in my bag.

I do not keep a bootable Linux image on my thumb drive, because it pretty much freaks people out if their Windows machine is suddenly running Linux!

And maybe someday I will have a Model M 60% in the bag. That would blow people's minds!

I suspect many GH will have keyboards in all four of these states (plus one or two "not ready, waiting for parts/caps").

Most of the time i use Deck82 or some white Race.

I did not use all keys of the Tipro. Have a WASD Cluster and much of the left half of a normal keyboard. Additionally I use some makros like
"Enemy at Point A" etc.

Matrix layout is nice for gaming. And programmability is always a big plus for me.

I have to admit, that's perdy 'n all. But do you actually work with these beauties? Your desk doesn't look like my desk...which is covered in paperwork (I'm paperless...honest). If you just sit and type 'the quick brown fox jumps over some stuff' while you stare at these Bad Boys...well, that would be sad.

lol, I was attempting to sound like a hillbilly. And yes, my comments were meant to be complimentary. I had just gotten off a several hour gaming session with some buddies. We trash talk and only compliment one another with insults. I was obviously still in that mindset. I'm sure the whisky didn't help in the communication process.

Translation of my original text:

You have a beautiful keyboard collection, and it's cool how you have them displayed. Clean and simple, which shows off the boards very well. I'm envious. I'm also envious of your lack of paper and clutter on your desk, because mine looks like sh**t. :D

Got that cleared up. Moving on...

Where did you get the shelving unit? I also like your wall mount LCD arm. I have my displays on deskmount arms and really like it. I recover my desk real estate and can easily move my displays around. And it's a good idea to change your focal distance throughout the day. Much easier on your eyes. With a display mount, it's easy to do that.

I am the same, though my setup is nowhere near as amazing. It makes sense as well. This way, your keyboards have a function even when you do not use them. Basically, they are to be looked at, and are part of the "look" of the computer room, like appropriately themed art.

To answer OP's question. I have three. One for the computer in our study, one at work, and one to use with my laptop. I must admit that the latter hardly sees any use. One thing I do not do is clean them frequently. Though when they get visibly dirty I try to clean them a little bit. Often I am too lazy to take of the keycaps though.

First of all I love the " 80's cartoon" colors of the keycaps. Maybe it is just me, but I see that keyboard and think of transformers.

Anyway, couple of things stand out, you are a leftie, that teapot is awesome , and maybe ADD would be the way to describe it, since you seem to be in the middle of things and then just drop it hallway through. I would be carefully collecting those caps and putting them in plastic bags. Then convince myself it is silly to check if they are all there, or make separate bags for modifiers lol.

what do you mean "in the middle of things"? those keycaps are carefully sorted into two separate piles! :))

I usually have piles of papers all over my desk when working on a project. To the 'untrained' eye, it looks like a mess, but I know where everything is. Then my wife decides to clean my desk and screws up my organizational system. :rolleyes:
