What's everyone do with all their keyboards?
« on: Sat, 19 January 2013, 21:25:50 »
Do you keep them on a shelf, just taking a different one down on occasion to enjoy for a while?  Do you have some sort of keyboard lazy Susan that you use to just dial up whichever board you get a hankerin' for any given day?  Do you just keep them enshrined in a dust free, temp controlled display case?

I'm about to order my first mechanical keyboard (KBT Pure), but something tells me I'm going to want to own more, so I can enjoy a variety of switch types, layouts, etc. I was just wondering what I might do with 'em all.

Bonus points for pics.

Well, it first started out with keyboards for my two computers, then it went downhill from there...

Right now my extra keyboards occupy a shelf in my closet, unboxed for quick swapping.

Currently I have them in boxes, neatly stacked in my closet while I am not using them. Soon I intend to set all 16 of them up Wakeman style...

...not really. Actually I should get rid of some again. Why the f*ck do I have that many?

Whoa, keyboard lazy susan sounds like an amazing idea. I think we need to get on that project.

I only have 2 boards right now: one for work and one for home.

I bought one keyboard, loved it. Bought a couple more to see if I like a certain switch more. Sold the boards I didn't like, kept the ones I did.

I currently have 5 keyboards and I don't regularly use 3 of them. One because I don't like browns anymore and two that I don't use because they aren't programmed and I'm not quite used to their layouts

I use my Filco everyday, clean the keycaps after every use, take the caps off to get rid of dust underneath, admire it for at least 5 minutes every day etc.......

I usually have a favorite for a while then put the rest in the closet if not in use.  It would be awesome if I had enough space to display them, but currently my sneakers are taking up most if the room in the basement.

I have QFR's in my closet, and switch them out when I feel like typing on a different switch. Find myself swapping between the green and red the most.

Probably because my red QFR has the Nyancats on them

Went through a metric crap ton of boards, and finally settled on the 55g Topre as my switch of choice. Have one for home, and one for the office, a HHKB for the laptop. Planning on getting a second HHKB and calling it a day.

So all of your keyboards are "in service" then.  I've got my home PC and my workstation at the office for a second board....I guess it remains to be seen whether that will be enough or not....   ;)

I have all my boards in their respective boxes sitting underneath my desk. So they are always ready for a switch. Unless they are being worked on, then they hang out in the workshop.

Well, like I said, I'm getting ready to buy my first mechanical, but the fact that I've had such a tough time picking one, I do see more in my future.  All cheap rubber dome stuff now.  It's sad that the best keyboard I own is on my laptop - granted it *is* a ThinkPad.

I will have to start a thread here in a bit showing off a bit of what I have.  It is a pretty insane collection, some really rare stuff.  Probably up to about 300 pairs also.

I have sold a lot on ebay. I don't have the space for them. Also, i need the money to buy new keyboards even though i am going to stop soon. It's an expensive addiction.  I try not to own more than 5 keyboards at one time. If i get one i have to sell one. If a new design, like a wireless compact keyboard comes out, then i will buy it and sell at least 2 of my keyboards. Also, my family thinks i am crazy for buying keyboards. They just don't understand.

I wear a good number of them.  There are a few doubles in there of some of the ones I really like.  I do wear the really rare ones too though, which lots of people think I am insane for.  But they are shoes and meant to be worn.  I'll have to start a thread here soon and post up some of the rarer pairs and such.

For a moment I thought he was wearing his keyboards, this being like a keyboard thread and everything ;)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I only got one Filco MJ2 (well, I also happen to have a Razer Black Widow, but shh, dont tell anyone :) ) that I keep in good shape on top of my desktop, under its rooftop when not in use.
Removing all the caps on a daily basis gives me headache but I try to clean it every now and then :)

I can't stop laughing.  From that post without the sneaker context it really did sound like I was wearing keyboards.  I suppose I don't have any keyboard sneakers.  Guess I need to make some?  A keyboard as jewelry may be easier than as a sneaker though.

300 pairs of sneakers in a basement? insane.

I do wear the really rare ones too though, which lots of people think I am insane for
LOTS of people think you are insane for wearing your shoes? insane.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Let's see: choc mini @ my desktop; typematrix @ my laptop; USB thinkpad keyboard on a shelf (just in case I have to repair someone else's computer)

Apart from that, about 50 keyboards are just collecting dust in the closet. Some are leftovers after group buys (goldtouch), some are full-size gaming keyboards w/ Cherry MX Black (I used them prior to the choc mini), the rest are mostly vintage keyboards I saved from being thrown away. I want to get rid of most of them eventually.

Same here, choc mini with brown on my desk and poker with reds on my laptop (with alu case, Beast Plate and ugly pbt cherry caps)
I plan on having only 2 boards in the end: GH60 and Phantom or LZ-GH if I can afford it
Was thinking of the ergodox because it's nice and clever but I'll probably skip on this one

I'm not a collector I guess, I like to use the things I buy

My collection lives in boxes with three out at any one time.  I switch around maybe once a week.  I wish I had a display case that would allow me to display them and protect them from dust at the same time, but I have no space for such things.

I have over 20. Whenever I try to clear some out by selling them, I always end up buying at least as many as I sold. I have more Pokers than some of you have keyboards in total. :)

I have a Rosewill at work, and at home I switch out between one of my Filcos and one of my Pokers. The rest stay in a closet.

What's the point of having premium boards if you can't show them off at work?  Just put a "do not steal" sticker on it.  :))

I only have 3 keyboards that I use, I keep them all on my desk, the two I don't use stay under plastic covers to keep dust out while I don't use them. My Filco with blues stays behind my monitors as I only get that out when I want to play with blues, which isn't all that often so I might consider selling it, and my QFR reds and Filco with browns stay on my desk next to each other so that I can freely switch between them.

Started with the cheapest units I could find but hated when the keys got shiny and loose. Then I bough a couple "expensive", so I thought at the time, Logitech boards. Then I started researching ergonomic boards, which is how I found out about mechanical switches. I bought a Das with blues, which led me to this site, which in turn led me to Elite Keyboards and the ultimate in keyboard switches: topre! Now my Logitech boards sit in storage with my Das to keep them company. I've been meaning to sell them I just haven't got around to it yet.

Well currently I only have one keyboard at my house. The others are in the mail or with other people.

But otherwise I keep them neatly shelved in a little cubby I have attached to the side of my desk. Whenever I'm craving a certain switch type I just swap out my board.

My boards are all directly above my computer on shelves.  I currently have 3 keyboards on my desk and the model M SSK and regular size within reach.  It's a sick thing really.  Today I've switched between the 3 currently on the desk, depending on what I'm doing.  I'm finding I like certain keyboards for certain things.  :p

Most of mine are in use.

I use my Filco TKL as my main keyboard.  Along with that, I have a generic mini keyboard (usb) and IBM Model M (ps2) nearby on the upstairs test bench connected to my server KVM in the basement, but my DAS will be replacing both.  I have a (slightly damaged) Logitech Illuminated that is downstairs on the server KVM, but the KBT Race will replace it once the switches are re-installed, I cannibalized it for my Filco. I also have a second Logitech illuminated that I loaned to my mom when her Kensington started sticking (she likes scissor switches). After that the damaged Illuminated and Model M will join the other Model M that is damaged, along with my (stripped and torn apart) Black Widow Ultimate in the spare parts bin.

There are many mechanical keyboards lost in my closet. I try to keep track but I have forgotten some of them.
If you live in AZ you can try my keyboards. I usually keep plenty of different ALPS and MX and buckling springs.

my number of keyboards is going to more than double over the next few months assuming my ergo dox(s) and phantom(s) are a success and the GH60 reaches group buy.

I was actually thinking of of making like a "quick draw" holder that holds each of my keyboards vertical and organized ready to pull out whichever one i want to use easily and quickly and have each slot have a different height for each board so that they all line up the same on the top level :D

and i have just started this addiction in September because lets be honest people, this is an addiction. kind of like how my wife has like 3 large tubs filled with handbags that she rarely or never uses, the difference is i use all my keyboards :D i find it more ergonomic with all the different layouts and switches.

You can use an old dishwasher rack to store them in, on their ends, so you can fit a lot in without permanently mushing the bottom one's switches.

I only have one keyboard which I actually use-- the Tank. My rubber dome IBM, I bought on the cheap as a stopgap during a time when I had no other working keyboards, and the Model M I bought on a whim, don't really enjoy using, but don't have the heart to sell as it's the only "contrast" in my collection (and when I have family visiting without their own electronics, they tend to like using it better than the Tank).

From a practical perspective, it'd actually be nice to have a second usable keyboard, so that I'm not forced to use something sub-optimal anytime I spill something into the primary keyboard and have to wait several days for it to dry out after washing. Unfortunately, nobody makes something close enough to what I want for me to lay out money
