Correction 90wpm. Took a test just now. I think its very possible. Especially if you've switched between layouts a few times. I guess in addition to not doing piano, I still haven't caught up to my original typing speed.80wpm... used to be 120wpm when i did piano.
this is impossible, you can't regress that much.... unless you stop using the computer all together.

I press the space bar mostly with my left thumb. The ring finger on both hands tends to get the least amount of use.

I can't be the only one who uses the left thumb to press the space bar. It feels natural.
Okay, so I had to watch myself type in order to figure out where my fingers are going. My left pinky hovers over the shift bar and is rarely used. Left ring finger rests on 'A', middle on 'S', and index on 'D'. My right has is an even bigger abomination. My right pinky rests on the backspace. Right index finger is usually on 'J', middle on 'O', and ring finger somewhere around there. My right thumb doesn't get used.
Now that I think of it, I have no idea how I'm able to touch type or get 90-100WPM. My hand placement is terribly inefficient.

well you're only 15... so... you got 5 years to double your speed... which you probably won't need... though you may need to learn more words... ;D

Perhaps, but I'd still like top be able to get to about 80WPM which would be nice in a working environment. :)

My WPM actually goes down using a Model M though, best wpm is using laptop rubberdome at #1, mx reds at #2, white alps at #3.

I am also slowly accepting the fact that the long travel on most mechanical may not be the "fastest" to type on.

This would be very slow unless you have very short fingers...
About 80 to 100 WPM.... What I hate is when I get that magical (one time I got 114 WPM) speed, then Typeracer goes "Oh wait, I don't believe you can type that fast. Here, to prove you just typed that fast, you need to type the following broken sentences from Alice In Wonderland, in un-readable captcha-esque font." But at least I know I can type that fast :P

With only 2 fingers, do you guys have to look down from time to time, because there's a lot more space to navigate, and there's no orientation mechanism with 2 fingers, if the wrists are raised

I touch type pretty traditionally using the homerow. The only weird thing I do is bending my left thumb inward to hit the left shift key.
On sites like this I pretty consistently type about 65 WPM, which is not great but not bad. On some tries I can get 70+ , but that is not my normal typing speed. However, it feels like I can hit 65 with ease, but can not speed it up by much if I try (weird). My accuracy is close to 100% though. I type calm but steady.

I am not sure where I picked it up. I think it came from gaming, where I would typically use my left thumb for hitting keys like z,x and c. I got so used to bending it inward that I just started doing it without thinking about it. It is not slow nor uncomfortable, so I just rolled with it :cool:

this doesn't change the fact that island is more "fluent" because it dramatically reduces finger liftoff distance before being able to travel to the next key.
With 4mm, you have to lift your finger higher to hit the next key, otherwise it might catch on the bottom rim of an upper row, or the top rim of the bottom row..
This is a large hindrance to the fluidity of typing.
Now.. again, technique can overcome this... but as to "which one is the better tool" that would depend on which is "easier to use" which "requires LESS effort to use" while achieving the same outcome

I'm 26 and learned touch typing last year on a Razer Lycosa (I know ewww). Took about 3 months to get to 50wpm. Now I can do 90wpm with bursts into 110wpm after a year. This is on a Filco cherry red, having blank keycaps has really forced me to touch type 24.7.
Now to me when I type at 90wpm it's insanely fast, but when someone else says they can type at 140wpm that means they can type twice as fast as me....that's insanity.

Low travel laptop eh, how about a linear switch for that double tap goodness.
My highest 1ff was like 157, I'm consistently around high 140s~
