Title: What is YOUR tying speed ?
Post by: ishumprod on Thu, 31 January 2013, 04:06:13
hi ! i decides myself like three days ago tu improve my typing speed-accuracy , and for doing this i considered using "typing race" websites. i'm currently around 53 wpm with 93.5% accuracy. i wonder if there are better ways to improve, and if you guys have some tips :)

what are your results on a race ?

let's all use http://play.typeracer.com/

Hi-game.net to practise for punctuation and symbols.
10fastfingers.com to practise on single words

oh dang. sorry, thread can be closed :)

don't worry bout it, I'd say just continue this one, the other one's stale, and full of "bad information"

I've been at 130 avg for the past 6-7 months on 10fastfinger regular, 95 avg on advance mode.

typeracer I can do 120, but only if I'm very focused..

Try flipping your space bar around, gave me a 5% boost recently, it could just be I am excited about the feel, but I can do 138avg on 10fastfingers after flipping the space bar

I notice that I tend to use only 3-4 fingers on either hand when I touch type. If only I had listened in school and learned the home row :P

you don't need the home row... but, which finger "arn't" you using... there are only 4 fingers and 1 thumb... are you only using 3 fingers + thumb?

and which hand do you spacebar with...

Correction 90wpm. Took a test just now. I think its very possible. Especially if you've switched between layouts a few times. I guess in addition to not doing piano, I still haven't caught up to my original typing speed.

I press the space bar mostly with my left thumb. The ring finger on both hands tends to get the least amount of use.

hm...  ring finger should handle w s x and o l ,     the "w" and "x" doesn't really matter, they're rare letters, but "o" and " l " and "s" are pretty important transitions, i mean "o" is a vowel..

Standard spacebar rule is right thumb, because that balances the load between your fingers

The most common last letter in a word in order of frequency
              E, S, T, D, N, R, Y, F, L, O, G, H, A, K, M, P, U, W

More than half of all words end with
              E ,T, D, S

as you see, because most words end in left hand letters, it is also advantages to use right thumb for space-bar to provide faster transitions.

also, on top of ending letters....

The most common first letter in a word in order of frequency
              T, O, A, W, B, C, D, S, F, M, R, H, I, Y, E, G, L, N, O, U, J, K

So you see,, right thumb space bar just HAS to be done.

I can't be the only one who uses the left thumb to press the space bar. It feels natural.

Okay, so I had to watch myself type in order to figure out where my fingers are going. My left pinky hovers over the shift bar and is rarely used. Left ring finger rests on 'A', middle on 'S', and index on 'D'. My right has is an even bigger abomination. My right pinky rests on the backspace. Right index finger is usually on 'J', middle on 'O', and ring finger somewhere around there. My right thumb doesn't get used.

Now that I think of it, I have no idea how I'm able to touch type or get 90-100WPM. My hand placement is terribly inefficient.

some gamers do this.. because jump is always wasd + left thumb. so alot of people who learned typing through gaming do the left thumb space-bar..

I switched from doing this, I learned to type in starcraft...

eventually at around 100-110 you feel that transitions require an extra hand lift for the space bar, and this cause a larger disruption in the rhythm...

well the thing is, transcription speed (WPM game measurements) of 80 may not be able to keep up with your thought process.

I'd say transcription speed of 125 is where you could reasonable "stop"...

I'm obviously much faster typing when I'm thinking out what I'm saying while I type. I'm just really bad at things like typeracer because of that and slow down massively when what I have to type is already in front of me.

~15 when coding in a programming language I know poorly
~45 when coding in a programming language I know well
~80-120wpm when writing emails or literature, depends how much redbull is in me and how much I actually enjoy what I am writing.

My WPM actually goes down using a Model M though, best wpm is using laptop rubberdome at #1, mx reds at #2, white alps at #3.

Funny you should mention that..

I am also slowly accepting the fact that the long travel on most mechanical may not be the "fastest" to type on.

You can always put more dampeners under the keys. Cherry MX Blue w/ soft-landing pads feel like better scissor switches IMHO. However, I guess the most important difference is that rubber dome is resistant at the top unlike in case of most mechanical switches.

It happens, I'm blazing fast when typing on my laptop rubber dome.  Sadly I don't use mechanical keyboards much anymore.

Letters symbols and numbers 90~. http://www.alfatyping.com/typing-test for the "Professional" typing test. I type for a living.

Just letters (10fastfingers) 136 average wpm.

Typeracer varies way too much.

I use my right index finger for the spacebar and I have pretty big fingers too. Average around 130wpm on typeracer, got up to 150 last month. I basically only use 6 fingers for typing letters, pinkys are for punctuation, enter and shift and thumbs aren't used at all.

60-70~ WPM on klavaro (touch-typing software) with custom text (letters / symbols / numbers)
I switched layout 7-8~ month ago, hence the bad score. (I previously used standard AZERTY, and now I use BÉPO)
The score greatly depends on the software/site you use to measure your speed though.

Also, this is a great site to practice : http://tazzon.free.fr/mpm_v3.1/

About 80 to 100 WPM.... What I hate is when I get that magical (one time I got 114 WPM) speed, then Typeracer goes "Oh wait, I don't believe you can type that fast. Here, to prove you just typed that fast, you need to type the following broken sentences from Alice In Wonderland, in un-readable captcha-esque font." But at least I know I can type that fast :P

I've been trying to figure this out for a bit, I'm stuck around 100-110 wpm on various test sites. The biggest thing is my head, if I hit words I'm not 100% on the spelling I'm far more prone to making a mistake. Also, lack of sleep. Anytime my head is in a fog I'm not typing very well. If I'm all stressed about typing faster I type slower haha..

I decided I'd record all the words I screw up and just spend some time typing them out, add them up into some mess of a paragraph and type it out a few times in the morning and evening. Improve my spelling and typing this way. Practice makes perfect.

I don't think this is your problem

Decouple the perception of "the audible response" of the keys is an important step..

With only 2 fingers, do you guys have to look down from time to time, because there's a lot more space  to navigate, and there's no orientation mechanism with 2 fingers, if the wrists are raised

i would imagine that the 70-80 from this method is moreso due to consistency than some wildly improvised two finger touch typing, but you're spot on about the wrist thing -- relativity f' yeah

I'm a wizard at tying shoelaces, but if we are talking ties or bow ties then I am a lot slower.

In all seriousness though; I averaged 88WPM when I was doing typeracer (only 212 races) to practice my touch typing. Best race was 112WPM, but it's all artificial as you start to learn certain rounds and know which words are coming up. It also has a distinct lack of punctuation and symbols, so I am sure I would do slower on parts that have lots of symbols that I don't use that often.

I touch type pretty traditionally using the homerow. The only weird thing I do is bending my left thumb inward to hit the left shift key.

On sites like this I pretty consistently type about 65 WPM, which is not great but not bad. On some tries I can get 70+ , but that is not my normal typing speed. However, it feels like I can hit 65 with ease, but can not speed it up by much if I try (weird). My accuracy is close to 100% though. I type calm but steady.

I am not sure where I picked it up. I think it came from gaming, where I would typically use my left thumb for hitting keys like z,x and c. I got so used to bending it inward that I just started doing it without thinking about it. It is not slow nor uncomfortable, so I just rolled with it

I score an average range of 65-70 wpm, but I can consistently score 80 on a great day.  If I get twice my age to double my speed, does that mean I'll type 140 when I'm 26?
EDIT: Perhaps I should say that these scores are on my MacBook's membrane *ugh* keyboard.  I'll be getting a sexy set of Browns sometime next week, hopefully.

no, you should be able to achieve 125wpm within 2 months, if you take it seriously. and practice.

going beyond 125 is something else though... it's making very little refinements and changing your technique from typing to "rolling"

for example the word "point"

some early typers make more finger/wrist lift movements than required to type "p o i n"

where an experienced typer would roll those 4 letters with 1 movement...

the keyboard itself won't directly "make you faster"

however, the fact that you just spent money on one will..

Buy...

Justify Purchase through "Use"

Use--> type more

practice --> faster

there is no "mechanical advantage" that would give you an instant speed boost.

In fact, most people are "fastest" on low travel laptop keys, because they DO offer mechanical bonus..

Personally I find on switches that actuate about halfway through the travel distance help me more with the flow of typing, as opposed to mashing down the key all the way like on scissor switch or membrane boards. Surely, IBM wasn't wasting time with the buckling spring design? I think not.

this doesn't change the fact that island is more "fluent" because it dramatically reduces finger liftoff distance before being able to travel to the next key.

With 4mm, you have to lift your finger higher to hit the next key, otherwise it might catch on the bottom rim of an upper row, or the top rim of the bottom row..

This is a large hindrance to the fluidity of typing.

Now.. again, technique can overcome this... but as to "which one is the better tool" that would depend on which is "easier to use" which "requires LESS effort to use" while achieving the same outcome

IN this way, the island chiclet style keyboard is superior.

Reductio ad absurdum: touchscreens are perfect for fast typing.

Alright, new record!  It's actually like 11:30 PM here in Canada, but I got so bored that I logged into my favourite typing site and... this happened.  The quote, if you're curious, is the one from Alice and Wonderland, which I find to be so common that I practically memorized it, owing to my high score.  Mind you, this is on a low-travel, but quite mushy, MacBook Pro keyboard, with QWERTY mode; I can only imagine how I'll blow this into the dust with Cherry Browns on a Ducky DK9008, and possibly Colemak (once I learn to type words other than Tennessee!)

after trying reds a few months ago, i've been noticing that there are really two ways to go about it.  light and barely touching the keys, or bottoming out and going fast as hell.  i can go faster with the second method, but at a cost to my own physical comfort after doing it for too many hours / days in a row, or whatever.

where an experienced typer would roll those 4 letters with 1 movement...

actually, it's five letters with one movement: you forgot the left hand. :)

point poit point point poitn point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point point piont point point point point piont point point point point point point point point point point point piont point pint pin

so you can see exactly how many times i screwed that up (my right small, ring, and middle fingers have reduced mobility since i punched something years ago, by the way :()

hitting 70 on my split m15 now, up from 35ish when i started.  i still look down ocassionally on the m15, sussualy when i lose home row. normally i touch type.
i reckon 80 or so on a regular model m

i also type quicker off  the top of my head than i do when i am using 10fastfingers

id like to hit 100 on 10fastfingers.

I'm 26 and learned touch typing last year on a Razer Lycosa (I know ewww). Took about 3 months to get to 50wpm. Now I can do 90wpm with bursts into 110wpm after a year. This is on a Filco cherry red, having blank keycaps has really forced me to touch type 24.7.

Now to me when I type at 90wpm it's insanely fast, but when someone else says they can type at 140wpm that means they can type twice as fast as me....that's insanity.

i'm just kidding about 600, kinda just threw out a big number..

I only mean that it is highly dependent on content typed.

300wpm is correct, i just timed myself..

On my low travel laptop, i think I can mash around .5sec so 580wpm :D

I see people on typeracer getting 140 on some pretty heavy content.
Low travel laptop eh, how about a linear switch for that double tap goodness.

it comes down to total practiced variations.

the more "different" words you have practiced. the quicker you can finger parse..

If you type the same thing over and over again, you don't learn the variations.

They brought back freestyle mode on 10fastfingers... it's got a big word bank now, and its' 2mins instead of 1min

You have to register to use freestyle mode.
