Oo Ducky Shine 3... What else could they do with it? I wonder if it'll have air conditioning built into it for my fingers.

Maybe they somehow figured out how to get backlighting to show through their Dyesub thick PBT caps :p

If only..

I don't see how this would be possible unless it was double shot with white PBT for the lettering. However, this issue would be plagued by backlit bleeding through the PBT plastic :P I guess we'll end up seeing in due time.

What do I think?  I think they are screwing retailers over...

I feel bad for ShakeR; they still have Ducky Shine I's still in inventory and just loaded up on Shine II's.

The Shine 3 might get the improved stabilizers from the Zero?

That's interesting.

I'm going to get another Shine II with Cherry Reds, but I'm curious to what other improvements they can make.

All Ducky are Cherry style stabilizers.  The Zero's are supposed to have improved Cherry style stabilizers.

Have you tried the new improved stabilizers, dante? Honestly, the ones on the Shine II feel fine IMO.

You don't want Costar and backlit. The wire tends to bind on the LED during typing.

It's really annoying and is the reason I don't have LEDs on my Costar stabilized poker

Makes sense why the Razer BWU donor keyboard had bent stabilizers wires. Still learning something new everyday :)

I have not personally tried them;  But several translated Chinese reviews have said that while they still feel like Cherry stabilizers they feel more uniform and not as heavy.

This was actually a huge issue in the Ducky Green board. Partially the reason I ended up selling it. Maybe they'll make Zero with Greens.

I'm not saying it is but I am going to say they've been teasing double-shot PBTs for backlit keyboards.

But wait: I thought Ducky was Costar-style wire stabilizers and not Cherry?

Oh, and maybe they'll fix the completely bat&*@#$ insane and moronic Fn layer layout from the DK9008G2. What complete and utter twit came up with that, anyway? Play/Pause at F4, Stop at F5, NEXT at F6 and PREV at F7. With FN on the right. The level of fail there is just inexcusable.

LOL on that Fn layout criticism. As much as I love Ducky, I'd have to agree with that. I tried using it a few times but then just decided to use the bloody mouse and never looked back.

Hmmm, I wonder what they will improve upon. I think the Ducky 2 was pretty great, though I am not a big fan of backlit keyboards. It is little more than a glowing distraction when in use, but it also looks kinda cool imo.

I agree. Originally I wanted one, however the Ducky I wanted was hard to get a hold of so I ended up getting a Filco. Never looked back! I convinced myself that the LEDs were a distraction...LOL

I'm with you guys. I never really cared for backlit keyboards but got mine mainly for the Clear switches. I guess it wasn't a total loss because the quality is amazing.. just spent a lil' more for those lights. They do bring alive my Artisan Skulls tho :P

Shine 3 cheaper than Shine 2 according to NCIX preorder.

what

Maybe this will be a downgrade from Shine 2... which would end up competing with the backlit Zero... What are they thinking? I'm so confused... I swear if this is better than a Shine 2... I just paid $150 for a Shine 2 a month ago............. But then again, I bought it for the rarer Clear switch.

Because they gonna implement that on Shine III.  Shine II is about 8 months old now if I remember correctly.  While Ducky Zero and Shine III will be brand new.

I'm mainly hoping on more switch choices again.  I'd love to see Green MX, White MX, and maybe even some variable keyboards.  Plus, with Rosewill coming out with a dual LED per switch keyboard (I think on the WASD and arrow keys), Ducky might be able to one up them and allow a keyboard that will have two color options.  Now that'd be cool.

Ducky was a tease a few months back with a full board of MX Grays.

Will it be popular? No.

Will they sell the limited amount the make in short order? Yes.

I think they should add a backplate matching the led colour, it really enhances the backlighting as seen on the quickfire tk and the razer blackwidow ultimate. Like Tempest790 I'm quietly hoping they make it available with some rarer switches like the MX Green and White, would really love to own one of those too because I'm currently using Blues.

PCCG are listing Ducky Shine Zero DK2108S with orange or blue LED and MX red/brown/black/blue.

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=113_1361

They are cheaper, around $110 compared to around $140 for the Shine II.

Available 21-Jun-2013.

The main differences appear to be non-detachable cable, and there is no mention of backlighting modes, so maybe it is either on or off.

PCCG is also currently listing only TK board, no TKL.

Edit: Sorry, that was probably more relevant here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=42563.0), but that thread was older.

At least for $1.50 you could get a space bar from wasd that would fit, assuming they keep the same size.  Not sure it would match perfectly though.  Hopefully that space bar was just a mock up or something.  The picture of it on pcccasegear looks fine, simply replacing the duck with the word zero or in this case shine 3.  I wish they would leave it alone though.

It's not impossible because I did own their Limited Edition Greens at one point. They also provided me the opportunity to own a Clear switch keyboard too. Ducky has been the company that has provided me with every switch that I have wanted to try up to now (Green and Clear). If anyone will deliver, it'll be Ducky.

Not that I know of. However, if you get light colored thin PBT's like white, they kind of work as a large window for the LED's. It's great for the reactive light setting on the Shine II keyboards. The stock Shine keycaps aren't very good for the reactive light setting because your finger is covering the lettering so you won't even see the back lighting.

That really would be a very pretty keyboard :) Too bad modding a fully backlit keyboard is a pain in the ass and desoldering all those LED's would be a major pain :(

Very true.  I may just be okay with stock clears though--I'll know any day when a tiny package with a switch simple arrives in my mailbox :). I know that I love smooth browns that my Ducky has, and Im not afraid of slightly stiffer switches.

As for the spacebar, can always swap it!

Then I need to make a decision between the DK9008G2 pro PBT and Shine III :S

PCCG has ETA on DK9008G2 Pro PBT as 19-Jun and on Shine Zero as 21-Jun, so maybe some time around then?

They have not listed any new TKL boards though, which had me worried.

From far away it looks like the case I painted with silver flake enamel, but in the close up, you can see the brushed metal grain.  Unless ir was photoshopped, it looks like actual brushed metal to me and not something painted to look like metal.

Might have been limited edition, or promotional only.

CM did that with a white case that has not yet seen the light of day.

Shine 3 is rumoured to be cheaper than Shine 2 - can't see how they would achieve that with a metal case.

Cheaper? Really? Interesting because I totally assumed it'd be more expensive with the Zero shine being slightly cheaper than Shine II... I am so confused at what they're doing... my logic skills are going bonkers here. Them Chinese are so crazy, man.

The thick PBT Duckies that are coming out soon are not very expensive vs other offerings-- on par with Shine IIs.  My problem is impatience.  Unless they give word of when these will be released and with what switches, I'll get something else sooner.  Same with CM, who can't give an estimate for when QFR with Clears will be out for sale.  If I had a date, Id be more willing to wait.

I wouldn't say that it's lower quality but it will definitely have less custom light settings and will have only one color setting.

I'd definitely go Thick PBT over backlit any day but that's just me :P The feel is more important for me than the looks. Also, the Ducky G2 Pro with Thick PBT's are priced amazingly. A spectacular value keyboard, if you ask me.

Too many rumours flying around and everyone making assumptions.

As far as I can tell from PCCG product descriptions, Shine Zero does not have multiple backlight modes, maybe not adjustable brightness, and non-detachable cable.

Also I have only seen blue and orange backlighting.

Note that this is all from the PCCG site (http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=113_1361), and they do not necessarily list all variations and it might be pre-release information.

lol I feel the same way too, as of now the listed price on Ducky Zero Shine is only $10 cheaper than Ducky Shine II.

Source:  http://ncix.ca/search/?categoryid=0&q=ducky

So if Shine III is cheaper than Shine II it would mean that Shine III is very close in price to Ducky Zero Shine.

Is Zero shine somehow has lower quality?

So far we only know that Ducky Zero are made in China while Ducky Shine II are made in Taiwan.  As to whether or not it will effect the quality no one knows yet.

Need to wait for some Ducky Zero long term review.

Except for the 78 version ;)

As long as the backlight brightness can be adjusted on the Zero Shine and it is remembered through a boot I am thinking I'll go with that.  I don't care about different backlight customizations which leaves keycap material (and availability) as the biggest factor.  I like the volume keys on the Zero (hopefully Shine Zero as well) better than the mail/internet and I can't remember what other keys on the Shine 2 as well.

Would ducky ever add usb or mic/headphone jacks to their products?  Maybe that would be another thing added to the Shine 3?

Quote from:  Ducky Keyboard's Facebook Page
Shine 3: Color space bar lighting effect

The space bar is backlit by red, green and blue LEDs. Colors are individually adjustable to combine into your favorite colors. The on-board memory can store up to 9 sets of customized settings to suit your moods.

How do people have the option?  I've tried finding a Shine 2 brown with white or blue backlight (US) and they're sold out everywhere.  For me, my decision is the Shine III based purely on availability.  Maybe I just don't know where to look.  :-[

Oh I had the exact same issues, part of the reason I went with a Filco for my last keyboard. The only reason I'd be able to find a Shine II is because I'm happy to use a Chinese Layout instead of a UK or US.

Well it's not like Shine 3 will be amazingly better.  I just got my Shine 2 (the last one with MX Browns and Purple LEDs that wasn't overpriced), and I absolutely love it.  Nothing about Shine 3, except a pure aluminum case, would make me disappointed about not waiting.  So don't feel bad!

Here's what will happen:

Ducky Zero 2108S = old Shine 2s, same functionality, new non-Cherry non-Costar stabilizers
Ducky Shine 3 = aluminum case + 5mm LED nonsense on spacebar, polling rate control, some other upgrades

Zero Shines will be $10-15 cheaper than current Shine 2s (why I would be hesitant to buy a Shine 2 unless you need TKL right away)
Shine 3 prices, who knows? I'm guessing $150-160 range if they skimp and have just an upper aluminum case. I can't see Ducky pushing much beyond that when cheaper Topre options are slowly being released.

As far as I know, here are are the advantages of a Shine II vs Zero:

- Mac compatible
- Removable USB cord
- Reactive + Pulse lighting modes
- Multiple function DIP switch

- Mac compatible
- Removable USB cord
- Reactive lighting mode
- Muliple function DIP switch
- Mac compatible: unless it has the NKRO hack built in by default (a la Choc Mini), the board should be Mac compatible
- Removable USB cord: would be surprised if Zero Shine isn't removable, but it could be fixed
- Reactive lighting mode: it does look like LED functionality is curtailed with the DK2108S
- Multiple function DIP switch: not sure myself

I'm not completely sure if all the specs for the Zero Shines were revealed. I can see why Ducky chose to go this route: to compete with the likes of Keycool and Vortex who have provided cheaper backlit platforms for a while now.

I am basing these features on the current Zeros available now.

According to this (http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=261) Zero models are not mac compatible.
The same link reveals that there is no DIP switch capability when compared to a Shine II.
Here is a picture of the Ducky Zero's back showing the non-removable cord.

The official reveal site (http://www.duckychannel.com.tw/tw/ZERO.html) also lacks any mention of mac compatibility and dip switch. The above image is also featured on this site.
If you read the Facebook comments on the Zero Shine announcement, Ducky confirms that there is no reactive mode. This is exclusive to the Shine series.

I was mistaken on the pulse mode, the Zero model will have this.

That is alarming that it is not Mac compatible.  What makes a keyboard Mac compatible?  My SHine 1 worked fine on my Mac.  So does QFR.  So does KeyCool.

Non-removable cable.

Limited backlighting - maybe just on or off.

Unlike the Shines, the Zero features a key that disables the windows buttons instead of utilizing dip switches. I'm guessing this might require the firmware to be "hardwired" for windows.

The same thing can be said for the Corsair boards which feature the same button. Windows only.

This KeyCool has a similar function (and a green LED under F12 which, when pressed in conjunction with Fn), apparently disables the Win key.

All mechanical keyboards are usable on OSX: it has its own keyboard determination utility for non-native Mac keyboards, I've tried this myself using both a Leopold FC700R and a Plu M-87.

MK.com has acknowledged in the past that the specs they list are not completely accurate. Manufacturers often have the Mac incompatible verbage so they don't need to support Macs if issues arise.

I can only imagine the aluminum case version will cost quite a bit. Pulsating reaction lighting is quite decadent :)) It's cool but some of those options just seem so useless and no one will use them no matter how cool.

Yep, i share the same opinion. Backlighting is pretty cool but after so many keyboards with that feature i just use it on with the lowest brightness or off. I'm more interested in the ducky mini and in the year of the snake. I think we have a new record, so many mech keyboards being announced on the same computex.

Ah, the plot thickens!

Hmm...mechanicalkeyboards (http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=383) shows the Keycool as being "limited" on non-Windows systems. What does that mean?

@Faceless: Wow great find! That alu case...I wonder if it is backwards compatible...

I have a white KeyCool (with MX reds) connected to my Mac.

Everything seems to work, except the explorer/calculator keys (the equivalent keys on my Ducky didn't work on the Mac either).

Even the Fn-F12 works to disable the Win key (mapped as Option on the Mac through Preferences).

Oh, Scroll Lock doesn't.  But the Ducky one didn't either, Mac doesn't really do scroll lock.

What does it mean? It doesn't return any key code, or there's nothing assigned to the key code?
Title: Re: Ducky Shine 3 Coming out soon~
Post by: rowdy on Wed, 05 June 2013, 05:09:26
Not sure, as I don't have a key code detection utility on the Mac.

Just to say that pressing the key on the Mac does nothing - so the Mac does not recognise anything that the keyboard might be returning when it is pressed.

Post by: w3djyt on Wed, 05 June 2013, 05:54:54
It's really hard to make a keyboard actually incompatible with Macs. As mentioned, they tend to just ask you to press certain keys the first time you plug it in, then take a stab at the correct layout "Hey is this ANSI?" sort of thing... Then anything it doesn't use (like scroll lock) it just ignores. FWIW, you CAN remap those keys to something else with a utility like KeyRemapForMacbook or something. So if I had to guess, it seems like the key is sending *something* in... it's just something useless, lol.

My guess is the Ducky Mini will be similar to the Nordic 60% that's been in works between Ducky and Vortex, which is basically an ISO Poker with LEDs. But on a different scale, it'll be your usual ANSI layout. So a Poker II with LEDs ...

Makes sense since the initial release of the Poker II doesn't come with LEDs but the possibility to.

This is actually pretty cool, but like a lot of these kind of keycaps, a little too elaborate for me. One reason why I like clacks so much is that they are still very much a keycap, just with something extra.

Interesting video!

One thing I found neat was how well the camera was picking up the LED turning on/off at a certain frequency.  Even when backlight was supposed to look steady, it was flashing on/off at a noticeable rate--probably due to a desync between the video FPS and the LED frequency.

Another point of interest is that the aluminum case may not be released for sale--at least according to the video.  And finally... not a fan of that super green camouflage LE model with very green keycaps.  I think Filco Camo did it better with a more neutral khaki scheme.

So I just watched the video for the first time to learn more about the Shine3 (other than just what the spacebar lighting looks like)...

While the delayed fade-out reactive mode is a step in the right direction (glad to see they at least tried), I'm gonna be pretty bummed if these ship without what is IMO the single most obvious natural progression from the Shine2 -- a combined low-light all-on (say, 40-60%) + high-brightness reactive (90-100%).  The delayed fade-out they came up with added in would make it even better (for stock keycaps), but that's the first thing I ever thought of after seeing Vesper's reactive videos w/ white PBT -- "How cool would it be if you could still see slightly-lit caps/legends across the entire board?"
http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=41947.msg844749#msg844749

I think all these snake/pulsing/wave modes might be neat if you want to show off to friends, but they seem kind of silly to spend time on when there's plenty of room still to improve the actual typing experience.  Wasn't the whole point of backlighting on keyboards about being able to see & use your keyboard better in a dark environment?

Edit: Lol this is the third time this video is being posted in this thread sorry. Skip to 30 seconds and you'll see reactive + full back light simultaneously.
Don't apologize -- it's a completely different and much more helpful video.  :D  Outstanding find & well done.

Lots of thoughts/comments:
(1) I'm about 98% sure you're right (can't completely trust that angle/ room lighting -- really too bad that they waited until the 2nd half to turn off the room lights!) and that at 30 seconds he is showing a combo of background+regular_reactive mode. Hopefully the stable / background brightness level can be turned down with reactive still maxed to create a more-noticeable difference / effect -- he doesn't toggle brightness in that step.

(2) Then, it seems like at 48 seconds, he is showing the same combination but now with the delayed_fade-out_reactive.  Really pretty killer.

(3) And then, at about 57 seconds, seems he stays in the same background+delayed_fade_reactive mode, turns the brightness all the way up, takes the fade-out delay all the way down 'past nothing', until the Fn button LED goes out, to activate a 'reverse reactive' mode -- in this case, instant / without any 'fade-in delay', it seems.  Can't imagine that would be as helpful as the first two for typing, but really nice to know they thought ahead and proactively built it in anyway.

So, as long as these lighting features end up in the shipped design, then looks like I'm going to be adding a Shine3 to my desk this summer/fall, even though I bought my Shine2 for the first time just a couple weeks ago.  Ouch.  But yay.

Other side comments:

(D)  I'm gathering that that spacebar is going to be standard issue, and if so, is really gonna have to go in favor of a blank WASD replacement -- seems they overreached there as it cheapens the look of the entire board.  Weird that Slick acted like it was such a point of interest/concern -- I actually really dislike any branding or markings on the spacebar at all.

(E)  On the Ducky Mini, I really really hope that they don't stick with that terrible blocky font.  [@Ducky: Play it smart and stick to regular, legible fonts.  Please.  I can buy an ugly $60 QFR if I want something visually hard-to-track.  Please don't do that to a Ducky board / the Ducky brand.]

EDIT:  Also, going back and looking at it really closely, seems like "Slick" from the LinusTech video was actually initially using the combo mode at about 2:47 (but either misunderstood it or completely skipped over it) until he turned the background brightness down, down, & then eventually off, leaving regular_reactive.  When he switched modes, to delayed_fade_reactive, the turned-down/-off background brightness level then carried over.  Still no way of knowing whether there are two separate sets of brightness levels for background vs reactive, though.

There is a limited edition "Year of the Snake" keyboard, then there is the Ducky Shine 3.  Both share the same space bar design.

I think what gets most people is that the front and top of the space bar light up.  With most backlit keyboards (if not all) there might be an illuminated logo on the front of the space bar, but otherwise it is not lit.

This one is.

And being such a large key, with so much illumination, it could serve as a distraction.

That repeat acceleration feature is unreal :-)

But to make it work in most games it would have to emulate a full actuation cycle (ie emulating repeated press and releases of the switch)

ie most guns in BF has horrible recoil if you keep the fire pressed. But they are very accurate if you single fire them repeatedly. I suspect the software industry would probably correct this "glitch" if people were abusing it with a keyboard able to emulate repeated switch cycles.

Oh and it can easily be done with AutoHotkey. (Emulation of repeated cycles with key pressed)

There was an AHK script for HL2 that made only the space bar super-fast repeat, as when you jump while walking forwards you accelerate a bit, and if you can jump exactly as you land, the acceleration is cumulative.  So you could end up bouncing along much faster than any vehicles.  Cornering was a ***** though.  Can't imagine what would happen if the whole keyboard had super-fast repeat though.

Umm... I'm getting nervous after just seeing something on the official Ducky Shine3 page -->

    DIP Switch Functions:
    Windows Key lockout
    Ctrl and Capslock swap
    Windows key and Alt swap
    DEMO Mode

That last Dip switch function used to be reserved for switching N-Key rollover from N to 6 for maintaining compatibility with Macs.  On the product page, it says NKRO and Mac Compatibility: Yes.

... ...

Am I missing something here??

Still no way of knowing whether there are two separate sets of brightness levels for background vs reactive, though.

On an unrelated note, to answer my own question about LED brightness from earlier in the thread (top of the page), the posted manual suggests that there are in fact going to be two sets of brightness controls -- one for the background ("unpressed") keys and a separate set for the reactive mode brightness.  Yay.

I've never had a USB keyboard plug into a Mac and not be compatible. By default it can handle a lot more than 6 over USB anyway - that's a limitation of Windows keyboard manufacturers have to work around.

So I think I'm missing the point of this dip switch all together?

Dat Ripple Effect... and Fade effects....

OMG I can't wait for DKS3 TKL version.... That is going to be my next board.

Ducky is officially the leading edge in keyboards right now.

Just replace the space bar and you're good to go.

Don't feel that had - you have got yourself a nice keyboard :)

Also a lot of people don't like the snake space bar - keep an eye on classifieds as some might pop up there if people replace them.

... Then you've never had a USB keyboard with Unlimited NKRO without any way to switch it to 6KRO -- it's a well-known/-documented problem that OS X simply can't deal with Unlimited NKRO over USB.  I experienced this first-hand with my Ducky 9008G2 (original G2, with just the topside Fn+F9/F10/F11 hotkeys as opposed to the physical dip switches on the bottom) -- had to sell it because it simply wouldn't work with my Mac desktop.  Also, the manual that comes with the G2 Pro series (with Dip switches) specifically instructs the user to switch to 6KRO for Mac compatibility.  I don't know what you're talking about with this being a Windows problem -- that's simply wrong.
http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=49

Still hoping that one of the MK.com guys can weigh in on this since the YotS product pages currently claim Mac compatibility.

Well my MaxKeyboard Nighthawk supposedly has NKRO over USB and it never gave me problems on my Mac. My Keycool 84 is also listed as having NKRO over USB and has never given me problems on my Mac. Neither have dip switches for me to mess with, so I'm not quite sure what the difference is with Ducky...

Wondering this as well. I really want a backlit TKL, but it seems like all of the Shine 2 TKLs are out of stock.

The only alternative I've seen is the Keycool 87s, but I don't like the color options.

WASD V2 "Code" is another backlit TKL option. They're not out yet, but their site says July 2013. Unfortunately from what the site also says it's only available in MX Clear with white LED backlight. :/

I think people complain too much about the spacebar so they decide to use the snake one as a permanent Shine 3 spacebar.

But even so it's still weird..... it's like it won't be year of the snake forever and I'd much prefer just having a line and nothing else.  That and Ducky need to redesign their logo, it's quite ugly as is.

Yeah, I was kind of confused by the whole spacebar thing. I'd though the snake logo would only be available on the YOTS edition. Then, when I was at my fave local peripherals and games shop, I was surprised to see DS3's being sold, it had the snake logo on the spacebar. I dunno if the guy at the shop was misinformed or not, but he'd told me that there'd be three versions of the DS3. Priciest is the aluminum YOTS, 2nd would be a regular plastic case DS 3 YOTS version, it would share all the lighting features of the aluminum YOTS. Then there would be the vanilla DS3 which does not have all the lighting features of the other two, one being the running snake effect. Here in Asia, it's out already, and I've been told it the regular YOTS edition, plastic case with all the lighting features of the aluminum YOTS. Please bear in mind this is what I've been told, whether it has any modicum of truth is another matter, I think the guy had heard wrongly.....but, time will tell.

No, but I'm definitely interested in a set of caps like these for mine. I emailed MK about getting them, but haven't received a reply yet (it was late last night). I found them on PCCG (http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=23004), but I don't know anyone in AU.

When I saw pics of the Shine II with those white key caps, I knew I'd just have to get one. Went for the Special Ed Cherry Blue with white caps and green back light......felt blue and red were too common. It's really beautiful, it's part of my reserve KBs......and yes, if there were a DS III with white caps, especially a TKL model, I'd bite......hard and fast! :D

It's the lighting, look at the key caps on the left, they're pure white.....I was casting a shadow over most of the KB when I took a pic of it. Yeah, the green lED was wonderful, actually wanted the usual blue though common, so when I was at the shop picking up the KB, I asked the salesguy to lit both up for me to see. The green LED won me over, wanted blue as my case had blue LED in it.....and I couldn't sleep due to this mismatch in LED. I didn't know I was so anal about this sort of thing.....finally threw my arms up in defeat and got a green LED strip and fan, changed the LED color of my case to this:

I was able to sleep much better after this....

I think the two side strokes clash with the duck-head emblem :(  Two different styles together (plus red and blue helping the distinction).  Would have been better to stick with geometric designs for the spacebar and keep the Ducky logo on the OS caps.

The LED's can be adjusted to what ever colors you want in the space bar, I believe. So you can make them uniform colors.

To me it's like the Ducky logo is shrugging. Lol.

Edit;
If they don't release a TKL of this I am going to be livid...

Fn + F9, to see how fast is the key repetition, I didn't know there was LEDs to show the level

NOTE :
And talking about showing the levels on the keyboard, you can't see the level or Red, Green, Blue for the space bar, then when you plug out plug in, it resets

Any way to get F2-F4 and F6-F8 to all light up at the same time? Or are these only used to display the Delay/Rate modes?

You can choose to display your key repetition level or not... not means : F2 to F4 & F6 to F8 light up

In Australia that would read as nearly one and a half tonnes!

It's the comma that does it.  But is is about 1 1/5 Kg - ok.

WOW am I disapointed! Just got my Shine 3. I ordered Purple LEDs with blue  switches. Ducky aparently made a HOT Pink version (like crazy pink not like slightly off purple) and they sent me that instead it is discusting. Wow it is ugly. This photo doesn't do justice to just how pink this is. I'm having barbie vs GI Joe battle flashbacks from my childhood.

Here's mine with Blue LEDs. Looks a lot better than the purple. I'm sorta glad they messed up my order. I initially ordered purple.

I really like this board, but I have had some weird problems with it so far. On reactive mode - I pressed Fn + right arrow to adjust the timing, and the keyboard crashed. LEDs went totally blank, and was unresponsive. I had to reboot to get it back (yes I tried unplugging it and re-plugging it in). The keyboard is plugged directly into the computer, and not into a hub. I'm running Windows 8 x64 on an i7 2600k w/ 16 GB of RAM. Custom built PC. Never had a keyboard crash before.

Anyone else had any problems like this?

There is always a lot of confusion between pink and purple.  Getting LED colours just right is tricky, and many boards with purple look pink, and with pink look purple.

I think Ducky Shine IIs were like this as well. I got a White LED Shine III and am liking it so far. The white is a very 'cool' white (blue-ish) as opposed to the warmer white on my Max Keyboard Nighthawk X8.

Yes I purchased it from MK.com I have an email in to them so hopefully they will do something but I'm guessing ducky just didn't make them with purple LEDs. At someones request I started a separate thread just to let people know like me who wouldn't have ordered it if they weren't going to be purple but its still awaiting approval.
It is just very strange as all ducky's videos have clearly shown a purple LED color and not pink so it is very weird that they would do this at the last minute. I know it is harder to get dark purple LEDs so I was excited when I saw these. You would think they would just sell it as pink if they couldn't actually get purple LEDs.

Thats what I said this is NOT as case of getting slightly off. These are SOLID pink like bubble gum. there is not hint of purple. The biggest shock is they clearly had actually purple LEDs because all the boards demoed up until this point were actually purple so they have changed LEDs they are using.

But since TKL and 60% are not that popular in Taiwan... I guess the majority of the deliveries will be for online stores

I have not one, but it might just be stiff or the keycap might not be installed correctly.

It probably has Cherry stabilisers, so it is trivial to (carefully) pop the keycap off and put it back on.

Are there any planes for allowing addressable firmware at runtime? So I could control the LEDs to do what I want at runtime. I did this a while back for my kinesis
and I have been messing around with things like showing CPU usage on function/number keys or other status indicators.

My girlfriend is currently using a Shine 3 MX Red with purple LED; the latest firmware patch seems to fix the issue she had with it going unresponsive while changing lighting modes for the first time after boot, but a new one has arisen. Now she gets random crashes where the keyboard goes completely unresponsive after changing, saving and/or loading the RGB settings of the spacebar. The only way to fix this seems to be a reboot or unplugging the keyboard; I've tried uninstalling and sweeping any drivers, but the issue persists.

Does anyone else have similar issues withe the Shine 3?

That RGB (and fast LED mode switching) crashing was fixed with the aurora firmware update (1.14). 1.13 didn't have aurora.

I'll be curious to see how fast the aluminum YOTS sell out.  As far as I know either the YOTD didn't sell very well or they made a crap ton of them; for example you can still buy these from imsto/qtan.

Do fullsize outsell tenkeyless by a wide margin in Asia?

Congratulations! :thumb: How's the aluminum case?  Is it just the top cover that is aluminum?
Yep, the bottom is just regular plastic like all other Ducky KB's. Due to the aluminum top, it weighs exactly 3ibs or 1.36kg, making it my heaviest KB....

I thought it would be a little heavier. For reference the quickfire XT I just weighed is a tad more than 3lbs.

The Japanese version is tempting. If I remember correctly, they only made so much of the Shine 2 9008 in Japanese. It was limited to blue LEDs as well.

So it is wondered whether the Shine 3 TKL will be available with a range of LED backlight colours in US layout.

I believe its Fn+F9

That did it! Thanks - and now I see where that's detailed in the manual.

omg dude

not to come off as rude( the community here really bashes on rude people but seriously dude?)

but anyone who deserves to own the ducky 3 paid enough minimum attention to the hype, me myself I followed its inception from the get go on chinese forums. not that  you need that, but all the videos popping out early summer more than enough explains the simply function controlling methods, you can't even call it methods..it's just more functions, same old fn key bs since the first laptop start adopting that, or the first non full size keyboard at that

Here's mine with Blue LEDs. Looks a lot better than the purple. I'm sorta glad they messed up my order. I initially ordered purple.

In regards to the TKL version how will you save the color of the space bar with the full sizer version I think it's alt+fn and any number on the number pad. Correct me if I'm wrong. I really wish I was able to detach the number pad when ever I felt like it.

Yes, they have a snake logo on the space bar.

Originally this special space bar was only to come with the Year of the Snake keyboards, but apparently Ducky decided to install it on all Shine 3 too.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry, I meant it if it came with a cleaner looking one. I know there's one that looks like... ___ (Ducky) ___ , however I was hoping for something more like the Shine 2's.

Also, have they improved the stabilizers on the Shine 3's? Or are they the same as the 2?

For those wondering about the 6KRO or NKRO on the Shine 3, I just got this response from Josh at TigerImports:

I asked:
"Will the Ducky Shine 3 support 6KRO as older versions have or will it only support NKRO?"

Josh replied:
"6KRO. It will be the same as the Shine II."

He also said, "We should receive Shine IIIs in a week or so."

Hope that helps and I hope he is right about the 6KRO as I am a MAC user...

Thanks peeps...

After emptying your wallet, and it arrives, can you verify that it only does NKRO, please?

As a mac user, this will make me sad.

That said, I hope you enjoy your keyboard when it arrives.  :)

The dip switch under the keyboard can toggle between 6 KRO and NKRO.
[Edit] After some googling it appears they removed that... Hopefully it doesn't affect it from working on a mac.

I got myself a Year of the Snake this week with my birthday money and it's just arrived. In love with it.

The firmware update which is out for the Shine 3s, that would be for this as well right? As far as I understand this is just a special edition Shine 3, but I know firmware can cause some pretty big issues with things if you get it wrong so I just want to check before I go ahead and do anything.

The firmware update is for DS3 as well as the YOTS edition, it supposedly addresses some compatibility issue as add a new lighting effect called Aurora. I have it installed on my YOTS the moment I'd first plugged it into my rig.

Ok, I have Shine 1, maybe saving backlight settings across reboots would be nice too.

The original Shine 1, when you reboot the computer, resets the keyboard and forgets what backlight setting you had.  Kinda annoying if you keep rebooting.

I understand that the Shine 2 onwards has onboard memory and remember what the backlight setting was.

Except that the extra 4 keys (YotS still has these, right?) - calculator, explorer etc. - don't do anything on the Mac.

And you can swap Alt and Win in System Preferences to mimic Mac Option/Command layout.

Hey there,
as I was searching the web to find reviews and such for the Shine 3 I stumbled upon this site. Very awesome! :)

I got some questions, I hope these weren't asked before:
I see that ducky is distributing firmware updates and I keep reading that some users have problems with the lightning mode not functioning well or keys not really responding and other different kinds of errors. Does anybody here experienced such errors?
So, is it like a Windows firmware update, that you will have to install everytime when you plug your Shine 3 into the pc or will the update be kept on the onboard memory of the Shine 3?

I guess when I order one than the Shine 3 will not be updated with the firmware provided by duckychannel, will it?

Does somebody know how much it costs to ship the Shine 3 via mechanicalkeyboards.com to Europe? Any differences to which european country it's shipped?

Regards

Hey, Welcome to Geekhack!

I thought the firmware update was designed to fix the lighting issues.

Firmware is something that is saved on a device, it basically tells the device how to function or how to load software. So by updating the keyboard firmware, it is stored permanently on the keyboard until a different firmware is flashed.

If you order a keyboard other than a Shine 3 or YOTS then it doesn't require the shine 3 firmware. I'm not sure if ducky has any firmware updates for other keyboards that you will need.

Shine3 - series is the 1st series featuring firmware updates.  The firmware is stored on keyboard, so u dont need to do it again.
The lighting mode bug appearing on some machines was fixed in fresh firmware. The firware update also brought new lighting mode "Aurora".

If any future updates come they may also hold some new led modes & goodies  :)

If ur looking for LED backlit...well, Shine3 has tons of cool effects incl. the badass reactive with adjustable delay. Its also got memory so u can set up ur own layouts with the light.
So for led backlit, id say there is no comparison  ;)

The mode I have been waiting for is the, er, delayed reactive (?) - where you press a key which lights up, then gradually fades.

Caps Lock and Num Lock work, though they dont change the lights on the mac's keyboard like they would on a pc. The 4 keys to the top right are non-functional however. They are the calculator, Pc, mail, and home keys. Also the Ducky/Windows key works as the Apple command key.
Also when i first tried using the keyboard on a mac it plugged in and started working, though i did not try the apple commands or caps/num lock. When i plugged it in today it was right after i had updated the firmware on the keyboard and i got a prompt on the mac to push some keys to help identify the keyboard, i am not sure if the firmware is related to that or not.

My bad, Num Lock and Scroll Lock do nothing and do not light up when pressed and the number pad always works. Caps Lock on the other hand does light up when pressed and works as intended.

Got mine in.  Mx brown, Magenta lighting. Reactive lighting mode is great. May need to grab some o-ring dampeners since it's still a bit loud for my tastes ( I bottom out constantly) but loving the board so far.

Once I get the function tweaked I can start playing with the looks. Anyone make compatible replacement top cases for these or have a source for replacement parts?  I have the urge to paint.

I've had pretty much every led color option available in other keyboards, except for orange. But out of all of them, I really liked the way that the purple leds looked on my ducky shine ii. But since I've never had orange before, and since it looks really nice in pictures, I want to try them out. Thanks for your suggestions, but it's between orange or magenta at this point :)

Ducky magenta (purple) is often confused with pink.  There is even a thread here about just that.

If it was me, I'd get the orange, but that's just my preference.

Wow, helping me out in two different threads :)

I read somewhere that the magenta becomes more of a darker shade when using the white keycaps. But at the same time, the orange looks really nice under them as well. I think I'm leaning more towards the orange.

The Magenta is definitely more pink than dark purple.  A quick video I made for an acquaintance of it:

Reactive is the one I was waiting for, and still waiting as my keyboard budget has recently been reduced somewhat.

Yeah, not sure who gonna use the ripple mode.
Besides reactive mode, aura mode is the other cool lighting mode.

Most of these lighting modes seem to have been designed for demonstrations.  Apart from that, they would be extremely distracting.

I just got my Ducky Year of the Snake!!!

This is my first mechanical keyboard, so there's a bit of a learning curve. I'm really not used to typing on anything that feels like this. As far as quality is concerned, I am extremely impressed. The aluminum chassis is well worth the extra cost, and it looks much nicer than I expected. I thought this would be one of those situations where the aluminum was thin and low quality. This isn't one of those situations. It's thick, has a great finish, and it weighs 5.5lb (according to the shipping label, which feels about right).

Highly recommend this if it's still in stock somewhere.

I'm planning on getting a Shine 3 soon, but I can't decide on a color. I'm on the fence between orange and magenta. I want to buy a white keycap set made for backlit keyboards (like this: http://i.imgur.com/m5Z7Smi.jpg). Both magenta and orange would look really nice. I can't make up my mind - someone help me out.

Do you know if it's possible to buy black keycaps like those? I'm interested in the Shine 3 but find the keycaps too busy, and I'd love a simpler option (something like the keycaps of the Code or Shine 2). I've found these (http://www.maxkeyboard.com/max-universal-black-translucent-mechanical-keyboard-keycap-set-top-print.html) keycaps from MaxKeyboard, but they're translucent.

Those look like Ducky Shine 2 keycaps.

Not sure you'd be able to buy anything for the SHine 2 now that the Shine 3 is out.

You could try (getting up to 60 valuable posts) and posting a WTB thread in classifieds.

Agreed, some of the lighting effects, like reactive and Aurora can be OK with the LED level dialed down, but that Ripple effect is downright distracting! Tried typing with that mode, NOT a touch typist I need to see the keys most of the time, and someone described it as Epileptic mode, this couldn't be more true! I'm not prone to such epileptic attacks at all, but looking at the LED going all hog wild when I was typing almost made me have one.

I didn't think it (Aurora) would be so distracting, but now that I think about it...

I think that these different lighting modes were meant for general web browsing, not for serious typing, maybe except for the default LED mode.

So I was hoping for a bit of quick advice.
I've managed to save enough to either buy the YOTS or a Ducky Shine 3.

I also would like to know what you recommend for the YOTS as I could either get it with Blue or Black switches, personally I've used Blue before and I loved them. I'll mainly be typing and doing a little bit of gaming so this will play a large part in it.

YOTS is so tempting just because I'd know I'd have 1 of 999 which since I'm a collector of many things already would make me happy.

Any help is appreciated <3

Welcome to Geekhack!

The limited edition ones (YotS at the moment) usually have one or two features over and above the Shine, such as an extra lighting mode and, in this case, an aluminium case top.

Limited editions also tend to have higher resale value.

Quality is usually the same.

If you can afford the YotD - go for it!

Don't let white LEDs put you off.  Sounds boring, but they are the best colour for custom keycaps as they simply light up the natural keycap colour.

Yeah, I'm really happy with the results. Only one problem though, my rig is going to have a white/red/stainless steel theme, and I'm thinking of swapping the ABS caps on the YOTS to some red on white Vortex thick PBT caps in the GB. Would white, red keys with black mods+spacebar look too distracting? :s I'll also need to source 4 extra caps for the calculator/e-mail/internet/Computer buttons on the top right...
