I love your Avatar lazerpointer! (FYI Laser is spelled with an S...)
I see you use an old ass CRT...
I see you use an old ass CRT...
Because I disagree with you? I use a 23" LED monitor.
I voted for 184, That being said, CRT monitors still have the highest contrast ratio of any display technology, NO input lag, and come in UXGA resolutions.
i vote we remove them.
i dont give a **** to see anybody's avatar.
Who actually looks at the Avatar?
Who actually looks at the Avatar?everyone, also gratz on 3333 posts :)
I don't read the username, I associate with the avatar through my peripheral while reading. That's why I hate it when people keep changing their avatars...
Yes, increase it to 184 pixels (like steam) 11 65%

I vote for 25x25 avatars upscale to 100x100 or 200x200.

Avatar size. It's a big deal.froshizzles.
This poll has now been completely tainted by people voting multiple times...
I will be counting post votes and using that instead now.
So what should I put you as?
I voted for just slight increase. Why clutter a text based forum with huge avatars?
This is just a discussion at this point, if most people don't mind it being bigger then I think it will be fine to increase the maximum size. Only if there is a good amount of opposition should it stay the same.I like how you make decisions for the forum as a whole :)
So people having bigger avatars would bother you on those huge screens?...
OK, someone is abusing the poll. When multiple No's come 26 seconds apart you know it's the same person.
I think we should have unlimited size avatars. Or 320x320.I don't think that's a good idea. To do that, you would have to keep a fullsized avatar for everyone, and have it resized through code. This would mean there would need to be ~30 or so fullsize images to load per page, along with images or videos on the page. I think maybe a max size, like 184, then your option to limit size via the users' settings is a good middle ground.
But implement an option in "Look and Layout" to limit avatar size to Unlimited, 150, 100, 64, or off.
I think it should be left at 100x100. Any higher will make mobile browsing harder. But maybe allow them to be expanded to original size, or at least a larger size from the person's profile page
I find them distracting, especially when I view this forum on my tablet, so I reduced the size of my avatar.
Is there an option to vote for "smaller, please"?

You guys should be making these type of polls anyway to avoid bias.
"hurr if you don't want a giant avatar you must be using an old CRT durr"
The benefit of making avatars bigger, at least for me is to show off the art that my lovely wife makes for me. I also like to see people's creative and fun avatars.

When I uploaded my avatar, I tried uploading fullsize, and thought it looked bad, but thought maybe it was because it had to resize such a large picture. So I cropped it myself down to the 100px limit. Here is a comparison: on the left is one I cropped on my own, and on the right is how it looks after being uploaded (zoomed in, of course). You lose a lot of detail.

Yes this is a keyboard related forum, so I guess you shouldn't talk about anything or show anything but keyboard related stuff then, longweight.
I want them to be a little bigger.
I want them to be a little bigger.
But why, how would that benefit anyone? It's not as though there are barely viewable now is it.
They ARE barely visible...

Someone could also argue the opposite. It's a preference. It would benefit whomever prefers it to be that way.

Technically, there is deadspace as it is. Roughly 40px based on Glissant's setup, the space between the end of the avatar and the end of text that is possible to fit under location or personal text. Why shouldn't an avatar at least extend out to that limit?

She can have her art all over the internet, I would still like to show off what she does.

Bottom line is I like to see avatars, and I want them to be a little bigger.

Actually this is exactly how I work. Every time an avatar changes, I wonder who dafuq it is. And when everyone starts using the same avatar, I get confused as all hell.
baldgye, more pixels = easier to see what's actually in the image. It will also allow for more of an image to show without it being too small.
Define what you mean by the forum functioning worse with a slightly bigger avatar?
Look is subjective.
simply allowing another8024,000 or so px's wont really change that in any way.
And again I ask (as I did with the signatures), if you don't like seeing people's avatars, and/or want to limit their size, WHY NOT JUST TURN THEM OFF?!?!
I think some people just like being contrarian.

If it dsnt actually impede the size of that column then I have no problem with it, but I'm guessing that space is there for a reason, though I'd still prefer smaller avatars as they have a smaller footprint

There is about 160 pixels of width there. It will vary a bit by platform and browser, depending on how your browser renders and estimates fonts. That extra margin is mainly there to reserve space for large user names. I recently added some code to handle those better and shrank the margin a bit to recover the dead space. The margin width is not driven in any way by the size of the avatar, so that argument is moot. If we suddenly allowed 184x184 pixel avatars, they would be chopped-off by the current margin.
While avatars are fun, they should not take away from the real content of the forum: the posts. I don't think we'd ever want avatars to bump right up to the post content. It will just make it harder to read.

This is a separate problem...a bug in SMF. The avatar handling code is a bit of a mess, especially where GIFs are concerned. I have some fixes pending to address that and prevent avatars that meet the limits from being re-encoded. They had their reasons for doing this, but I don't think it's worth it.

The clutter aspect is yet again a very subjective aspect. And you are free to disable avatars at any time. There's an option for that.
Are you trying to be ignorant or does it just come naturally?

No. I prefer the smaller avatar icons.
I'd also vote for the option to read posts with no icons or profile info, as an alternate view. That way I can turn off the panel to the left and see posts as a list.

As a workaround, hit the print button in the lower right corner...
Well, if 1 of those was an admin... democracy is out the window!

To be fair, the sig rules were a little unclear. The restrictions that we had in mind were not very effective, so I tried to fix it.
In case you haven't noticed I've been going around fixing bugs and adding features that were in our backlog. This was simply one of them. Admittedly, it caused more drama than I expected.
TROLLS: demik,

topic is still stupid and will go nowhere.
You have unnecessary padding... The padding is there for the words, not the avatar...You are severely over simplifying this.
Bollocks!
I happily turn off sigs, but NOT avatars, I like them and they don't break the reading flow.
I just don't want them any bigger.
Are you running Firefox or Chrome? Hold down the CTRL key, mousewheel up until the avatars are as big as you like. Problem solved. :Dpixelation
When you change the maximum avatar size, it will change the left column size accordingly. Then it will all be uniform. No, it doesn't, column width is an independent setting and each post has it's own table, which is why you get that staggered look like I posted.

Perhaps I was unclear. When you choose the maximum size for avatars it will also change the size of the left column for all posts. Thus it will be uniform. The avatar wont be changing the size of an individual posts left column. The choice of maximum size will be what changes it for everything.
The option to change the maximum avatar size would change that left margin object's specific width depending on your choice of size. So the left column will have a different size for each of the choices.

It's literally like you aren't reading what he's saying at all.
I'm in favor of prioritizing content (replies and information) in detriment of meta-content (avatar, signature, etc). So my vote is No, regardless of the monitor technology! I think that in that regard Deskthority has a very good layout.
Please change my vote to 150..
I vote for leaving it alone, removing them entirely, or selecting them randomly.
Mainly for leaving them alone, though.
Yes, we have enabled them on a trial basis. To keep the trolling in check, they are limited to admin and mods for now.Boo!
Rkinze, you've been on a real tear with the forum updates. Thank you ^__^
Fold and Multi-quote are soooo nice and I like the polls
So if we wished to have a poll, we would start a thread, PM a mod with the poll options we want, and they would put one up for us?

It went through The_Ed! I voted 184 too a couple days back and it seems like it's there now!
I love it!
184 didn't win, 150 did. And the poll is still open, so if you know others that like it send them to the poll to keep the larger avatars.
MOAAAR PIXELS!!!
Yes, increase it to 184 pixel or 150 pixel
