Are you trying to be ignorant or does it just come naturally?

Well ...I guess I'm done here.

Even bumping it up to 150x150 is a lot. Isn't it crazy that a small 50px increase in two planes more than doubles the content of a 100x100px image?

And again I ask (as I did with the signatures), if you don't like seeing people's avatars, and/or want to limit their size, WHY NOT JUST TURN THEM OFF?!?!

I think some people just like being contrarian.

Bollocks!

I happily turn off sigs, but NOT avatars, I like them and they don't break the reading flow.

I just don't want them any bigger.

esoomenona, yeah it's a huge difference really, but it's also the max amount I would go for if we got the option. If we don't get the option that really isn't a problem ;) .

No.  I prefer the smaller avatar icons.

I'd also vote for the option to read posts with no icons or profile info, as an alternate view.  That way I can turn off the panel to the left and see posts as a list.

As a workaround, hit the print button in the lower right corner...

Yes, like that!  Except with the gray/orange color scheme...

Thanks for the tip!

Well, if 1 of those was an admin... democracy is out the window!

To be fair, the sig rules were a little unclear.  The restrictions that we had in mind were not very effective, so I tried to fix it.

In case you haven't noticed I've been going around fixing bugs and adding features that were in our backlog. This was simply one of them.  Admittedly, it caused more drama than I expected.

Notice how it skews Halverson's post? It looks bad and makes it harder to read.

Now imagine it doing that, all the way down the page and it varies depending on their avatar.

This isn't an exaggeration, it's actually what you would get by simply upping max avatar size.
I scaled Halverson's avatar and pushed over the post how it will actually look. Yes, you can set the column to a single size, however it;s not as easy to do as you think, and changing that one table setting, can have REALLY strange repercussions if that same setting is used someplace else, which is what happens a lot when using stylesheets, which the forum does use.

Leslieann has a good point. The only way it would work is if it was changed to a column size as wide as our avatars. Maybe someone who actually would be working on this, if it happens, chime in on this issue.

You are severely over simplifying this.

If you reduce the padding so Halversons's doesn't push things over, you also reduce the padding on all of the others, possibly skewing the entire thing to the left, without actually accomplishing anything at all. Not only that, I haven't seen a padding tag for text. You can pad an image or table, but not JUST text... In which case ANYTHING that gets close to the table is going to push the cell over.

Again, stylesheets, you cannot just randomly change padding in one thing without fear of it changing padding on something else.

I have setup and themed almost half a dozen sites like this. It's not that easy. I;m not saying it can't be done, but that it's not as simple as to just go into a setting and change it.

Plus, every forum update, now has to have that change added to it manually.

Oh, and not everyone is reading from an HD screen...

No, it doesn't, column width is an independent setting and each post has it's own table, which is why you get that staggered look like I posted.

Perhaps I was unclear. When you choose the maximum size for avatars it will also change the size of the left column for all posts. Thus it will be uniform. The avatar wont be changing the size of an individual posts left column. The choice of maximum size will be what changes it for everything.

That's not how style sheets work I'm afraid, at least with these templates.  The left margin object has a specific width to give the interface a consistent look.  It is not like an HTML table.  This is what a 200x200 avatar looks like on the dev site:

Also, I forgot about some of the other padding that comes from the nested style sheets.  The avatar itself currently has about 136 pixels.  That can be modified of course, but I just wanted to point out that the technical details behind this are not as simple as you think.

The option to change the maximum avatar size would change that left margin object's specific width depending on your choice of size. So the left column will have a different size for each of the choices.

It's literally like you aren't reading what he's saying at all.

I think what he wants is a user-configurable settings that will then scale avatars down to whatever size each user wants.  While it is technically possible, it is a feature that is unlikely to matter to a majority of people.  It would require quite a few site code changes, not to mention a database schema change.  I'll add it to the list, but it would be a very low priority given everything else that is there.

TL;DR: this probably won't happen any time soon.

In the meantime, lets vote on what the hard-limit should be:

I'm in favor of prioritizing content (replies and information) in detriment of meta-content (avatar, signature, etc). So my vote is No, regardless of the monitor technology! I think that in that regard Deskthority has a very good layout.

I vote for leaving it alone, removing them entirely, or selecting them randomly.

Mainly for leaving them alone, though.

I'm in favor of prioritizing content (replies and information) in detriment of meta-content (avatar, signature, etc). So my vote is No, regardless of the monitor technology! I think that in that regard Deskthority has a very good layout.

Yes, we have enabled them on a trial basis.  To keep the trolling in check, they are limited to admin and mods for now.

So if we wished to have a poll, we would start a thread, PM a mod with the poll options we want, and they would put one up for us?

Your welcome!  Sorry it has taken so long to starting getting momentum on this.  We spent a lot of time on the backend (especially iMav) and then everyone just took a break.  More front end changes are coming.

So if we wished to have a poll, we would start a thread, PM a mod with the poll options we want, and they would put one up for us?

The main reason for bringing back polls was so that the community could vote on topics pertaining to the site in a more official way.  After the drama about signatures, it became apparent that such changes are better handled this way.

If you wish to start a poll, you can PM a mod.  We left them disabled when we relaunched because of the rampant trolling we had before.  To keep from peppering the site with a lot of obscure and tangential polls, we'd like to keep the subject matter focused on improving GeekHack for now.

Yes, we have enabled them on a trial basis.  To keep the trolling in check, they are limited to admin and mods for now.

Thanks for making my point!  :)

Edit: I'd also like to point out that there is nothing stopping anyone from starting offsite polls about whatever they want.
