Title: Ducky Mini
Post by: VesperSAINT on Thu, 06 June 2013, 06:10:48
Ducky Mini pic from Ducky's Official Facebook Page:

Looks like Ducky has joined the 60% club with backlit :) Should be interesting to see what kind of back light customization it'll have (like Zero, Shine II, or Shine III???). Pricing should be interesting too.

That Ducky logo is definitely better than their other ones tho, or at least much cuter :)

mmm ... it is a Poker II with LEDs. The FN layer looks similar to the Poker II with the addition of the on/off for LEDs. Here's hoping there's a broader spectrum of switch options for the Ducky Mini.

In past years does Ducky seem to release products soon after Computex (the way Apple would do it) or do they wait several months (the way most manufacturers do it)?
Title: Re: Ducky Mini
Post by: alaricljs on Thu, 06 June 2013, 12:44:10
Apple does that because they know they can sell anything.

Everyone else does the delay so they can gauge reactions before committing.

This is basically a poker 2 with leds so I shall call this keyboard the docker or pucky. :p
So we have seen the Shine3, the tenkeyless Zero and now the mini but what i really want to see is the year of the snake keyboard!

I'm definitely betting that the Year of the Snake is going to be a Shine III with the aluminum case.

Or it'll be like the dragon, a branded shine ll. And the price will just be a lot more :(
I'm hoping for it to be something more out of the norm.

Hmmmm~ A double sided PCB with poker form factor? I'd be in for one. I was always on the fence about 60% but with a double sided PCB and maybe dip switches? That would be a deal sealer. Fit it into an aluminum case..... wow.. I'm like persuading myself as I talk.

Maybe that delayed reaction lights we saw in the Shine 3 video. Excessive but nice touch... hopefully they won't try to charge 30 bux more just for that though.. that'd be stupid.

This will most definitely have Cherry stabilizers. If you're worried about the whole Cherry-stabilizers-suck thing, I would still consider this as they may feature the new "improved" Cherry stabilizers that are featured in the Zero line. I have no personal experience with these though.

Why are you comparing the quality of an unreleased  Ducky Mini to a KBTalking (old version) Pure, when the comparison is suppose to be with a KBC (new version) Poker?

The point was: vortex has had qc issues, I'm afraid to spend money on a backlit keyboard from vortex. I will be using the stock keycaps for such a keyboard, and I don't want them peeling to hell. The thing is though, I didn't know this piece of information:

Ducky Mini's are going to be made by Vortex.

Well, it's unclear if Ducky is simply taking over production, or if Vortex is producing them for Ducky. My guess would be Ducky would be handling production, but I don't know that for a fact.

Going with the fc660m is a good choice!

I have both the poker II and the fc660m in browns and between the two I would say the leo is the better keyboard. It feels like it is of higher quality and the layout is far more intuitive. Also the key profile is closer to a cherry keycap and the keyheight is lower so it is far more ergonomic when not using a wrist rest. The only disadvantage is the lack of a standard layout so changing keycaps is difficult. I have been trying to get qtan to try and get some of the blank keysets for the fc660m from taobao but it doesnt look like its happening.

This board caught my interest recently. I'm currently in the market for a compact keyboard (60% or 75%). Was looking at the Poker II or Race II but in my opinion this one looks even better. I'm very curious about the switches that will be available. Would like to try Greens or Clears on this.

Yes, the white/silvery aluminum? keyboard is the newly revised mini. Looks like a 3 layered board! Will be interested in seeing it at Computex!

I do prefer the Poker style look of the Nordic Ducky Mini, but I could tell when I saw the first teaser pic of this new one that it would look completely different.

So I was kinda prepared for it to not look the same.

Quality-wise, some plastics can be just as good as metal (it just comes down to what the designer/manufacturer specs), and from a design point of view I think that the sandwich of aluminium and plastic makes for a more streamline appearance than if it had been just a block of metal. That being said, I'm not too fond of this case shape for a 60% keyboard.

Damn, I was really hoping for a Poker 2 like Ducky Mini. I want a 60% keyboard because it's more compact than my 75% but with these bezels it doesn't make that much of a difference. I'd like to have an ANSI-version of the Ducky Mini that was released in the Nordic region.

Hmmmm looks like they made it so you can pick your own FN key from bottom row:

https://www.facebook.com/117547488320354/photos/a.117548801653556.22498.117547488320354/654860364589061/?type=1&theater

Also you can have 3 different styles of Esc / `~ key:

https://www.facebook.com/117547488320354/photos/a.117548801653556.22498.117547488320354/654847434590354/?type=1&theater

That's actually a pretty huge deal and I like how they have the Leopold FC660C style too, like shift + Esc = ~

:D

EDIT:

They also have switchable function for capslock to FN or Ctrl:

Looks like Ducky has joined the 60% club with backlit :) Should be interesting to see what kind of back light customization it'll have (like Zero, Shine II, or Shine III???). Pricing should be interesting too.

That Ducky logo is definitely better than their other ones tho, or at least much cuter :)

Its a mini 60% grown duck.

Oh man that photo is very nice :)

Thanks for posting the Video! I really love the LED functions. I would love the one, when you type it lights up that key. Pretty rad! I do not like the small spacebar on the ISO though. Also I do not like the left side USB. The case Forsure looks better when displayed like that with others. Very clean, big like a KMAC but low profile. But at this time I still don't think I'd enjoy it with the case being so wide both directions. But man those functions of the PCB are cool!

It's funny, I don't think any of us noticed the keyboard...

I did!

I specifically commented on the backlight-on keyboard that is evidently not connected to a computer, so that you would all think I was paying attention :p
Oh... I took a glance but not really a deep look, kinda was like ooh asians.... Me likey.

I like the way the one to the right of the picture is holding the keyboard almost as if it were a guitar.

Oh wait a second, it's not RGB LEDs? I thought it was weird the video said "two tone" LEDs...

Yeah it's not RGB LED captain
they use two combination LED between
- blue and red
- green and red

I haven't touched the key so i didn't know exactly how it's works
I am not in Computex this year, i just got some picture from my friends there :))

@Zeal I will give you for free if my friends bring some of that keychain ^^

Ok thanks HendyZone. Ducky made one important move for me: Blue and Red means I can get a Purple/Pink keyboard.

Yes, Ducky mini is using bi-colored LED to show THREE tones,
Via frame switching frequently, our eye will have persistence of vision (ex. blue+red = purple)

There is another small keyboard used bi-colored LED, too. which is called KBP V60.
This kind of LED just have two pins to control, changing color by inverting the voltage.

seems quite silly. They already have RGBs, why bother to put out a keyboard with bicolour? The lack of a third color prevents unlimited color possibilities.

Since my Model Ms and Fs will never (M122 needs bolt mod now) die, I am so going to wait until 1, 2 years from now when Ducky offers RGB LEDs and PBT doubleshot backlit keycaps. I'm pretty sure they will get to that eventually. As long as they can make money selling mechanical keyboards, Ducky's got to do that PBT doubleshot thing!!!!!

Up yours, to Deck and its stubborn refusal to get a non-ugly font!

RGBs only provided to Corsair.
The case is like MX-RED before, only Japan products have this spec in the first year.

Who is "they"? Only Corsair is able to use RGB LEDs with genuine Cherry switches at the moment.

If you want RGB, you'll have to go with either 5 mm LEDs or SMD LEDs. The former won't work on MX switches (designed for 3 mm LEDs), not will the latter unless the casing of the switch is transparent, which is the particularity of the MX RGB switch.

So if you're stuck with classic MX switches and 3 mm LEDs but still want more than what a single color LED can offer, the best you can do is use bicolor LEDs. Which have only two pins, so they're significantly easier to implement on a new keyboard than any flavour of RGB LED.

oh darn, I thought it was just a problem with the PCB/controller. You mean those RGB LEDs won't even fit on traditional Cherry switches?

Post by: qwack on Tue, 10 June 2014, 11:22:07
If you hack the thing, you can, for example with rectangular 5mm RGB LEDs and a bit of leg bending, but then the PCB and controller must be able to drive those LEDs.
