Attack on Titan(Shingeki no Kyujin), only 25 episodes so far but easily one of my favourite animes already.
Deathnote, went into it thinking it was overhyped but man did it deliver! Did fall off somewhat storywise in the end but still a solid anime.
Cowboy Bebop, the only anime that I have actually watched dubbed. Awesome music, interesting characters and a soild story.

Samurai champloo (my all time favorite)
Steins;Gate
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genesis Evangelion (and all things associated with it)
Grave of the Fireflies (old Ghibli movie, I cried at the end.)

These are some more old-school anime. I don't like much of the newer stuff.

Nobody is reccomending Haruhi?

One of the best ever made anime XD
One can hate it but is simply genius.

If you are watching it make sure to watch the tv airing, is much better than the the dvd and the second recast

How has noone said Gurren Lagann?

this is a very solid anime, if you're a bit "OLDER"...  because young kids who are not reading between the lines, or do not have the pretext to do so would think the anime is just a crazy mish-mash..

It is a deep story that challenges you to reassess and evaluate what it means to be human, and where true limitations exist.

Watamote was really good imho... although it seems impossible that the character would be a girl in real life.. most likely a guy.

QFT. I guess that is typical Gainax though lol. Always looking through the "human" perspective and posing questions like that. GAINAX FTWWWWW.

Right now I'm watching Bakemonogatari but I'm not sure if I like it yet.

I like a bit more mature animes, and full metal alchemist just lost my interest after 10-15ish episodes.
Brotherhood any better in that regard?

Might aswell add Afro Samurai to the list I recommend aswell, just due to the art and the fighting.

Um art and fighting? Yes those are great parts of Afro Samurai and do well on their own, but the BEST feature of the anime is SAMUEL FREAKING JACKSON!

An unsung hero to me is Black Jack (by Osamu Tezuka). It was written in the 70's and 80's, but its depth and story are simple incredible. I recommend it to anyone who likes even somewhat emotional stories, it's amazing.

Rossiu did what he did for the Greater-Good.. That is also an important lesson that Lagann was trying to teach.. that "this element" exist in times of "limited" information and resources...

Without Rossiu, for example, they wouldn't have resurrected the Spiral King, which preserved significant spiral knowledge...  You can't just KILL OFF bad guys... it's not always advantageous..  Coexistence is the ultimate goal..(http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/th_113_.gif)

I think you have to looks at it from the context of when it came out. It's a bit dated, but the "camera angles" and perspectives were a huge influence on The Matrix, among others. Overall, the story is just OK, but the visual style was a real game changer.

I agree it was probably one of the few high production animes of its time...

Tried watching it 5-6 times.. couldn't finish..

The same thing happened to me with "The God Fathers" series.. Tried over 10 times to watch it.. couldn't finish

Cromartie High School - Just sublime comedic genius. Unique. Nothing else in anime or outside it that's comparable really. Not to everyone's taste though.

Cowboy Bebop - You've probably already watched this over a decade ago. Probably one of the most watched, and well known animes in existence, but there's a reason for that; it just stands head and shoulders above almost everything else that was around at the time, and in my opinion almost everything else since too.

Best:
+1 for Steins;Gate (and ova)
+1 for Death Note
+1 for Clannad
+99 for Code Geass
+1 for Shingeki no Kyojin (except you're left groveling in the dirt, clawing for the second season at the end)
NHK ni Youkoso!

Very good:
+1 for Hellsing Ultimate
+1 for Sword Art Online
Angel Beats! (only 13 episodes)
Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu (funny)

Gurren lagann and fmab are very overrated imho. Both are decent though. I'd also have to challenge the "deepness" of gurren lagann. The plot structure was very poor imho. The characters were pretty flat but okay. It was fun I guess, but I wouldn't give it any points for having a well thought out plot. FLCL is basically an acid trip. Baccano! was pretty decent. I'm watching Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica right now, and it's interesting so far.

I watched the live action version of Cromartie High School which was pretty good.  Same with the live action Initial-D (I think it was called this, it had a tofu truck), and Kung Fu Hustle.

I'm only one episode in and already I'm like, why did he(the Survey Corps guy) just think it was cool to give this poor woman her dead son's severed arm? If it was his head, would he have just as nonchalantly handed that to her as well? And then he makes the entire scene about himself with his poor me attitude, not all the lives that were just lost.
And why is this kid the same cookie cutter, gloomy mood, angry at the world headstrong self entitled little winy **** from every other anime ever made, with his stereotypical yin to his yang sister who's just a stonefaced emotionless automaton. I mean why does he give a damn at the age of what, 11? 12? Coming from a family who care about them, these kids are downright unrelatable and ungrateful. Get out of hero mode bro, calm yo ****. Is this whole cattle thing supposed to be some kind of comment on modern society, and his hipster sensibilities won't let you enjoy your loving family? Not to even begin on Mikasa and her robotic attitude. Does this girl have a thyroid deficiency? She has the range of emotion one might attribute to a pillow filled with sawdust. Even after that tramatizing event, she still acts like she just smoked an oz. of grizz.

Oh and, WHY DON'T THE TITAN'S HAVE GENITALS?
I'll give it a few more episodes, but if AoT keeps pissing me off with it's predictability I'm gonna have to take a pass on the rest.

I thought the animation, filmography, all good..

However, when it comes to "combat"    What they're doing is just too stupid...

The fact that they can make some sort of "ultra-compressed" hydraulic system, and yet no one utilized the technology properly..

Look how freakn' long it takes to train their damn spiderman people...  It's ridiculous waste of time..

They should just pool their resources into mass producing medium-large ballistas..

All they would need is to launch enough roped-bolts (ankers) into the giants to temporarily bring them to their knees.. and run in with a guy and kill the giant..

This is another example of an anime that is ruined by  SUPER POWERED technology...  because it's completely illogical how they're using it...

Grrrrrrr...........

Now I'm MAD............... (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/3c68bb64.gif)

I have to agree with Turtle and tp.

Titan's strength comes from it's emotional connection. The feelings of tragedy and heroism are amplified by the sheer magnitude of the action in the anime. The logic behind all of the magic however...doesn't really click so well.

So yeah, it depends on your values/personality on whether or not you'd like Attack on Titan. If you're the type to run in guns blazing, go for it. But if you're the strategy or introspective type...this stuff will not connect with you.

Ermmm finish the series x'D

Logic doesn't matter in fiction... most animes are totally unrealistic.. I mean writing someone's name in a notebook to kill him/her? Time machines? Since everyone here is ranting about gurren lagan, does "Screw logic!" ring a bell? 3D maneuver gear isn't any different. I found no problem with suspension of belief. It's done fine in my opinion.

I gotta say.. this is anime we're talking about; good luck finding much stuff that is too introspective or strategic (though I will again recommend Welcome to the NHK and Death Note and Code Geass :D... maybe Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu.. Monster). The plot is not at all just "run in guns blazing." There is actually development and depth, and it's not all fighting and explosions of blood. There's a good reason it's top ten. I will agree that it's more appealing on an emotional level, but it is not at all totally devoid of all else.

It's really the flow of the story that's upsetting to me. It'll be a balls out action scene for 2 minutes then an eternity of talking or focusing on something they could've spent a fraction of the time covering. It's difficult for me to get comfortable with the pacing, especially when you can predict exactly what's going to come next. Dragonball Z syndrome.

Do what the PR0s do... read the episode guide on Wiki... scan through for action scenes.  DO the whole series in 40mins.. (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion_custom/th_0suit.gif)

A must see:

1- Trigun (funny, good action, great story, watch for a black cat in every episode)
2- Berserk (I agree with Berserkfan though...there is so much left of the story. It's gory, slight nudity, and A LOT of violence)
3- Blue Gender (Good action, gory, good story, gets really slow at times but it's worth it)
4- High school of the Dead (ZOMBIES...if you can get past the fanboy parts, good action, great story, and ZOMBIES)
5- Attack on Titans (One of the best I've seen in a while, great action, good story twists, very entertaining overall)

When you have time/bored:

1- Neon Genesis Evangelion (Original ending SUCKED but the overall story was awesome, watch the original series but skip the last two episodes and move onto the new stuff)
2- Cowboy Bebop (funny, good action, decent story line)
3- Samurai Champloo (another funny one, good martial arts, good story)
4- Gungrave (twisted interesting story, great action, kind of gory)

I think the joke goes that the ending of Evangelion was so bad that they had to make multiple movies to try to fix it.

Oh, also I'm astonished no-one's mentioned Akira yet. In a thread like this made 10-15 years ago it would have been suggested about a million times by now. I like Akira, and it was the first Japanese animation I ever saw back in the early 90's, but there's other stuff I like better from that era. I think I probably just got caught in the first wave of kids to be exposed to Japanese cartoons outside of Japan (apart from the stealthy outsourced/co-developed ones like Thundercats or Ox Tales). So a lot of my youth was spent at the video store obtaining the first ever exported titles from Manga Entertainment. It seems corny now, but stuff like this blew my mind as a kid.

Finished Titan last night(unless I missed some episodes. 25, right?) and although it's flaws are apparent, it did get much better. A lot less downtime, and much more action. So much so, that they even glazed over a few very key plot points which seemed like a mistake in retrospect to the earlier episodes which spent so much time on things of lesser significance. One of the things that bugs me about anime is the cultural differences in emotive reactions, and I know it shouldn't bother me that much but when a character does something that changes the flow of the story or arc of their character I want to in some part understand where they are coming from, and AoT still has some of that but largely makes up the difference with a very strong militaristic sympathacation(not a word, but you know what I mean) vibe that kinda bugged me on a different level. The entire series seems to heavily push that 'civilians don't understand/sacrifice of the few for the whole' thing and at some points I felt like I was watching a recruitment video.

Much of the predictability in the first half of the series is MIA in the second half and it becomes just one long Red Wedding, which I kinda liked as it had the effect of drawing that small part of my caring about a character out and toyed with it. All in all, I wouldn't call it the masterpiece that so many have claimed. It's not 'good' like Deathnote or Bebop, but it's certainly not bad either. On an anime 1-10 scale of totally stale to groundbreaking and unforgettable I'd put it somewhere around a 7. I look forward to series 2.

I was thinking more of anime-series when I linked my favs. Born in 90 so I didn't really get into anime before I got around 18. Akira was one of the first ones I saw, still amazing in my opinion.

I'm glad you took the time to watch the other episodes, was going to comment on judging an anime when it is barely started :)

There’s no end of good anime in the world. Only a lack of awareness and time.
I’ve never watched Attack on Titan before. (I read the manga) and it is good. It reminds me of Terra Formers, though. Too many important characters die off damn fast, so you’re left wondering who will actually survive.

I did predict correctly in Attack on Titan that the main character (who was eaten) would come back in a more powerful form. I also predicted that there was something predestined about him not to die early and I was right. But I can't predict whether he will actually survive to the end of the manga. One thing about anime/manga is that it's not bound by Western conventions, so outrageous things happen in the storytelling. I was really annoyed by Cradle of Monsters recently, when the main character was killed off in the second last chapter.

Talking about logic, I just finished Book of Bantorra, and it’s an example of the total lack of logic in many anime series. Pretty decent and interesting, but I won’t recommend.

I would recommend Blade of The Immortal. It’s available in English manga, and spans 30 or so volumes. The artwork deserves to be called art (as opposed to most manga and practically all US comics, which should be called cartooning). Blade of the Immortal is also quite deep in culture despite the sci-fi elements. I have no idea why the anime was panned; the anime is actually pretty good, but the problem is the high standards of the manga made expectations too high for the anime.

Ok here i recommend something really different, as i am a pistonhead:
1. Initial D : awesome, you have to watch it, basically it started the whole drift scene we have now worldwide, it's really detailed, and awesome
2. Wangan Midnight : another car related anime, featuring one of the most beautiful cars ever, the 240z
3. eX-Driver : this is cool because it's set in a future where all the cars are self-piloted, and just few people are allowed to have petrol cars just to save situations where the computers fail, the cars are really awesome, c'mon the Lancia Stratos is an icon

shigurui - simply the best.
ninja scroll - obviously.
monster - wasnt bad.

why do people like ninja scroll... I was bored...

It was the first anime I ever saw. I saw it like 20 years ago. It was gory and violent, plus it had swords and naked titties in it. It pretty much checked all the boxes for a good show when i was teen/preteen. I dont honestly remember it all that well, but that I remember it at all 20 years later I think says something for it. I did enjoy the ninja scroll tv series more than the movie though.

Along those same lines though, Akira was hyped a lot back then. Ive tried watching it a few times. I dont know if I ever saw the whole thing. Did any of you guys like that one? It seemed like it was just several hours of some dude with a stupid looking motorcycle screaming "TETSUOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Everyone had different preferences

But personally I really like Full metal alchemist Brotherhood, Anything Ghibli, Attack on titan was kind of ok, love hajime no ippo. Hunter X Hunter, despite its "flaws" and basically being a shounen, is probably my favourite anime of all time.

Other anime that I really enjoyed and are more easily overlooked is Hiraku no go, Gundam wing (I understand why people hate it, yet I still enjoyed it more than any other gundam series), beck, berserk, wolf's rain and trigun.

ummm....Kill La Kill :P....It is produced by the same people/person who did gurren lagann.

Be warned it is out there and very much filled with fan service, but the action makes it work it.

It is a new series so there is only like 5 episodes.

Darker than Black is a good series, i think two seasons.
.Hack//Sign I have always loved.
hmmm I many others just can't think without my morning tea :)

i have attempted to watch a lot of anime. But honestly there is only one series i like:

Ghost in the Shell

pretty much all of it is amazing except the second movie which makes no sense no matter how familiar with the philosophy and characters you are. that movie was lost in translation.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is the best tv anime ever made. the second season was good but the major's boobs were too big.

No no no no... no..., you've missed the point.. they have cyborg/metahuman bodies...  the boobs though aesthetically too big, are probably just housing fuel cells, or capacitors for quick high amperage discharges...

If I can recommend something, it would be:

Full Metal Panic! - motherflippin robots and child soldiers and ecchi as hell
Full Metal Panic! Second Raid (third series, second series Fumoffu was filler only) - the same with more robots and undercover lesbian incest...
Infinite Stratos - harem shounen whatever with MOTHERFLIPPIN' robot suits and BOOBS! No to mention ecchi as F***!
Shingeki No Kyojin - good but not that much, but manga is kind of awesome
Code Geass R1 and R2 - robots, robots, teen boobs and more robots, just an occasional filler, lots of action and robot fights
Highschool of the Dead - motherflippin' awesome, zombies, guns, boobs, boob physics, katanas, ecchi as hell.

MOTHEERFLIPPIN' FAIRY TAIL, MAN!!! Just watch it for God's sake, it is so motheflippin' awesome! Aye Sir! And manga is also good, ecchi as hell...

My question is, are there any good new mecha anime, with good qualit fights, preferably military style like Full Metal Panic!? Otherwise I would watch Gundam 00...

I've heard Gundam Unicorn is good, but have kept away so far because it's being released like Helsing Ultimate was... I really hate the one episode per quarter thing, it drives me mad waiting months for the next episode... When it's almost finished I'll definitely be checking it out though! Also, Gundam 00 was pretty danm sweet, probably my favorite Gundam series so far.

Ah.... well.. it's good if you know absolutely "nothing" about cars going in...

For example, drifting in the "show" was considered "fast"... drifting in real life, is you've seriously ffff-ed up... and you're probably going to die.. and it also endangers the other race drivers..

While there's no wrong way to drive a car.. the way it's presented in the Initial-D story is VERY WRONG...

The goal in real racing, not "drift championships", is to get form point A and point B the quickest, drifting is absolutely NOT the way that's done..

Well, I guess that creators of Inital-D just wanted to make a show about racing and also make it cool. Without drifting and fast and furious physics there wouldn't be much of bling to get out of this show.

You could also be mad at Code Geass, because the stature of the characters would only be possible with using exoskeletons, not good old spine, ribs and whatnot.

Code Geass doesn't need additional reasons to be mad at it.  It has Ledouche, the most annoying anime character ever conceived.

4 pages and no sports?

For sci/fi+action

I would also recommend Berserk, which is my all time favourite manga, not so much as an anime. Read Berserk.

hahahahaha.... le-douche.... i didn't know h8ers have gone that far with the derogatory..

I don't find him annoying...  is it at all possible that anime fans are just jealous of the character?

I mean.. he's fictionally got all the stuff that anime fans would "want" in real life...

Super intelligence, super good looks, mini-harem of women, he's of royal lineage, he's an underdog among his peers, he's a "victim" of injustice, thus a rebel..

Any one of those facets would fit the fiction fans' prerogative...   in essence... the h8 is generated because ledouche is too over-powered... because he has EVERYTHING... and yet continues to lament and be unhappy...

WHILE the audience would switch places with him in an instance for ANY single of traits he possesses.

4 pages and no sports?

  • Hajime no Ippo
    Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger
    Slam Dunk

For sci/fi+action
  • Elfen Lied
    Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan (this was mentioned before so I just wanted to repeat it for emphasis... Who doesn't like face robots?!?!?!?)

I would also recommend Berserk, which is my all time favourite manga, not so much as an anime. Read Berserk.

I went back and watched this when I got the b-ray...

Honestly.. I thought it was pretty good when I watched it as a kid... but... now that I've grown up slightly... the anime just pisses me off...

There really is no depth... it's MOSTLY just fan service...   and the typical illogical behavior of super-powered beings persists.

No, it was his attitude throughout the whole thing.  "You want to play chess with me? Why bother when you know I'll win?".

Clearly it is ranked 8 out of ? for best ?  in the category of ? by ? since Ledouch is so annoying. Makes perfect sense.

Try not to waste my time on random anime unless it's been recommended by a number of friends. Watched Attack on Titan, it's as good as others in here have suggested.

Currently watching Hunter X Hunter (2011) per others recommendations, seemed kiddy until people started dying

But.. you can't hate ledouche for saying things like, "why bother, when you know you'll lose.."..  because that is part of the tactic that he's using.. to psyche out his opponent...

It has the 8th highest rating of all anime on MAL by over 240k people who on average disagree with you.

Popularity alone proves nothing. In fact, awful pieces of media seem to be massively popular on a regular basis. There's almost an inverse correlation between popularity and quality like 80% of the time.
Title: Re: Recommend me a good anime

Well, I think that Lelouche (or whatnot) is kind of badass. Since he is young a single handedly broke down the whole empire (not to mention he sacrificed himself) is kind of ball-tearing badassery.

All I was saying was, that to make the anime show look cool, is to make it unreal, not physics accurate. Like teen girls firing bolt action sniper rifles while standing, dressed only in school uniform. It is appealing, makes the show fun to look at but the nerd inside you screams in pain...

What we say in our country, when we see such scientific nonsence is: Don't bother, it's a fairytale ;)

You're right. That's why there's a different section for popularity and rating... Not sure if this was a response to me. Quality is largely subjective, and ratings are a decent way to determine the perceived quality of something based on the input of thousands of people. "Baby" may have over 900 million views, but at 3 million dislikes, the majority of ratings are negative. Popularity does say something though; plenty of good songs, shows, etc. are popular (Code Geass R1 is ranked number 2 in popularity). Ratings and rating systems can be somewhat flawed (I don't think fmab should be rated so high; just my opinion), but they generally give you a good idea of quality (fmab is a pretty good quality anime).

Code Geass r1 and r2 are both in the top 15 for score and popularity for a reason :D

The art style isn't for some, and I'm not particularly fond of it; it's also somewhat dry and slowly paced in parts. The writing content, comedy and fight scenes kind of put it up there for me, but it obviously won't be for some.

Planetes is god-tier in terms of anime. Really, really well done. East of the Eden is another good one.

Attack on Titan was overrated. It isn't bad, but it falls apart if you actually start thinking and stop allowing yourself to fall prey to its manipulative and cheap-trick storytelling.

watch slam dunk, so much better than kuroko imo.
Then again, kuroko's more fast paced with the actual games, slam dunk has more of a fleshed out story.
I personally don't watch kuroko, i just read the mangas.

I assume you've seen the original movie, the 2nd movie  Innocence, GITS: SAC 1&2, GITS SAC SSS, and the newest one that just came out this year GITS Arise Eps 1 which is like a reboot.

that more mature feel?
Or the sci-fi feel?
Or the "half the eps are just stand alone stories and don't tie in chronologically with the story" feel? lol

Oldie but a goodie is Trigun
Appleseed from Masamune Shirow (creator of GITS)
Cowboy Beebop is good too.
Ergo proxy - dark mature anime

others i'd recommend that aren't that type of flavor but still good imo are
Trinity Blood
Chrno Crusade
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (skip the 1st FMA, its meh)

I'm also a big fan of more 'serious' anime. I would recommend - Armitage III, Megazone23, Perfect Blue, Jin-Roh... since I don't think they were mentioned already. Also they aren't long series which can be a nice thing. I've also been kind of into the Bubblegum Crisis universe of stuff (A.D. Police, Parasite Dolls) lately. Some other older ones that might be interesting... Fist of the North Star, Wolf's Rain, Angel Cop, Silent Möbius, Venus Wars, Roujin-Z.

Watched the 30 first episodes of FMA: Brotherhood this weekend, really glad I did since I like this a lot more than FMA for some reason.
A long time ago I watched 10-15 episodes of FMA and I didn't really get into it like I have with other good animes.
Maybe something to do with me getting older and my taste in anime chaning, I do not know.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for mentioning Brotherhood^^

Standard fan service stuff.. well done for the most part with respect to this "genre"..

What was more interesting to me is the concept of dolls.

Is a sufficiently complex doll that can reproduce (in some form), a life, a human?

I suppose this goes for Data from TNG as well.

also reminds me of that video game, binary domain.

it would seem that all our conscious definitions can only ever be approximations.. And in that way it will always be behind reality until we merge completely with the universe to achieve singularity..

If you like shounen (Naruto & Bleach) you owe it to yourself to pick up Yu Yu Hakushou. It pretty much defined the genre and you'll see a lot of influence from it in both series. (YYH more primarily to Bleach - Hunter x Hunter is more the primary source of Naruto. YYH and HxH are by the same mangaka and HxH was recently remade if you have a thing for newer animation styles, it is absolutely worth it as well).

Dunno how many here would like it but I watched Clannad & Clannad Afterstory and really liked them. It was a marked change from the previous animes like Code Geass, Bleach, Vandread and Naruto which I'd watched.

Edit: Getting ready to watch Evangelion tonight and Attack on Titan will be next after that.
If you enjoyed Evangelion you might enjoy watching RahXephon. To me they are somewhat similar in one distinct way.

Also you might like Air and Kanon. I have not seen Clannad but Clannad after story and Clannad the movie. Clannad after story is quite saddening even though I don't know much of the story behind Clannad itself.

Code Geass makes me think of Gundam being somewhat similar, notably Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny. Vandread is very nice and somewhat similar (mech. theme) to Code Geass and Gundam series but of a completely different plot.

Naruto and Bleach are somewhat alike, I guess the only other suggestion that I may add is Fairy Tail. Also Inuyasha and maybe One Piece.

I watched over 300 different animes, so i can recommend u something if u post what anime u liked :D

Ghost in the Shell. I haven't found anything in that caliber. Suggestions?

Thanks for Ergo Proxy, LOVE the art-style and it's quite unique compared to what I have been watching before

I saw the trailer. Ergo proxy is next on the list. I love this forum. Much more better than anime forums. No hate, just experience. I wrote this post on pbt blanks I bought form one of you. ¨¨

Thank you all.
You might also like (in no particular order whatsoever):
I just watched the Sword Art Online and guys, it is really epic and there were very feely moments in this. I would really recommend to watch. It is kind of light, but there is drama and all and all, it is fun.

Now I'm going to watch Valvrave ;)

First section made sense.. then the second part.. UGh........................... blehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............................murrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh...........................

Well, I really loved the first part. The second part was kind of meh, but it made sense. This anime found it's place on my backup harddrive. I will definitely watch it again ;)

God, I even shed a tear or two...

For quite sometime I thought Sword Art Online was just an actual MMORPG game and not an anime based on the game itself (based on seeing an advertisement banner on some tracker site). When I decided to give the name a bit of twirl with google I found out to my disbelief it was anime. The anime was really nice but it needs polishing in my opinion, threre's just too much "time warping" factors.

If you like Sword Art Online you might also like Accel World which somewhat has similar themes here and there.

The RZA

Code Geass doesn't need additional reasons to be mad at it.  It has Ledouche, the most annoying anime character ever conceived.
I thought "excalibur" from soul eater was more annoying.

Maybe I was in a bad mood that day, but I didn't like the "ghost in the shell" movie.

Ones I have liked that I didn't see listed here:

Angel Beats : one of my favourites, though it does move a little fast.
Haibane Renmei : This one was great for how it made me think and feel while watching it. I am given to introspection naturally though.
Mononoke : (not princess mononoke, the film) It's all about Japanese folklore and stuff, and I really enjoyed it.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 : realistic story of some children in an earthquake.
Spice and Wolf : main focus is on economics and commerce. Because of this, it was really good!

Most of the other ones I've liked, I'm not sure if I'd recommend, as they are primarily just good ones in a genre I prefer. The above are all good though.

Monogatari series is very interesting! Has a hate it or love it art style though tbh
Aria the Animation and the rest of the series were fantastic, great just to watch and relax to.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is a must watch. It. Has. Everything.
Both Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop were great.
Psycho Pass and Ghost in the Shell are great philosophical/thought provoking shows as well.

I watched ghost several times, and it's actually "not that deep"..   essentially simply adapting the constitution of mind vs body arguments towards our computer age.

But this is the same basic question on "doubt" and meaning of "existence".

When ghost in the shell first came out there was none like it.
Now tons of hollywood movies and other animes have stolen the concepts and adapted them for there purposes.

Both not very deep questions. Psycho pass wasn't really that deep either, but it was at least constructed in a more thought-provoking way than the average anime. I can't really think of any "deep" anime, but anime like Monster come to mind as being of a more serious nature.

Here's my personal list of favorites:

Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion (I really like the new "remakes" - 1.11 You (Are) Not Alone, etc)
Kenshin series (kind of long)
Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
Ghost in the Shell (movie+series)
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Trigun
Initial D

I also just started watching Attack on Titan.  Only seen the first few episodes, but it's really entertaining thus far.

Frankly I can't understand why many of the female characters' voices are so damn high pitched, similarly like teletubby or ages 3 to 6 cartoons. Makes me immediately lose interest when I perceive the target audience is for kids. Need more seinen, less bull**** kiddy voices.

live actions generally suck.. no budget... the reason they make anime in the first place is because they have no budget for a convincing live action..

Sure that is generally true, most live action manga/anime adaptations are generally quite bad (though some are highly entertaining because of this as well!), but Mamoro Oshii has a pretty good track record with live actions so probably an exception.

Episodics:
Ano Hana
Death Note
Code Geass
Evangelion
Sword Art Online

Features: (aside from the usual Ghibli suspects)
5 Centimeters Per Second
Garden of Words
Paprika
Perfect Blue
Summer Wars
Voices of a Distant Star (a short, not a feature... but very, very awesome)

I feel like klk lost its luster around episode 8,  if you make every episode extreme.. even the greatest over-the-top animation can become bland without contrast..

For example.. if you only had one flavor.. it gets boring, even if it began as "the best" flavor ever.

What I don't like about Evangelion is that the whole anime seems to be intentionally made to keep-you-depressed..

Instead of the typical moe-blob affair that trys to make you happy,  Evangelion is like anime-alcohol, a depressant...

tldr: crunchyroll pays percentage to the anime company for each show watched, more ppl watch the show (i.e. naruto/bleach) then that show get's a higher percentage.

crunchyroll sub is 7bucks a month will get you basically 90% of all anime, the rare anime i don't see on crunchy roll i see on hulu. (that's if you have both)

Nisemonogatari starts off slowly but it picks up midway. Monogatari is pretty good.
I think these shows are harder to get into because the style (conversational, puns, satire) and not much happens.
I got pretty bored watching Nisemonogatari.
I'm not sure if native Japanese speakers would this show more engaging but I think they'd appreciate the dialogue more than us.

Yeah, it's obviously focused very heavily on dialogue and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the finer parts of it got lost in translation or were simply lost due to culture differences. Interesting show no doubt, but it gets dull due to the general lack of action. I remember Bakemonogatari becoming really intriguing when the last couple episodes finally broke the monotony.

I imagine I'll get around to nise eventually, but at this point I've got such a huge backlog that "eventually" could mean a very long time  :p

I've been enjoying Fairy Tail of late-- it has a "off-brand One Piece" feel to it.  A similar art style, and plenty of worldbuilding and foreshadowing in the first 48 episodes-- all that's on Netflix presently.

Perhaps because Eiichiro Oda was the author and artist for both?

I've heard it's one of Oda's assistants; much as how he started out as an assistant for the guy doing Ruroni Kenshin if I recall right.

I just looked it up, you're right. The art always seemed so similar that I thought they were both from the same author, but I was mistaken.

it is very difficult to watch, and it's not even a factor that it's an old anime (18 years?) aside from the MD player... there's really nothing that ties it down... other than imo it's just not that good.
i mean back then, it was great animation and action.

and there is a remake, and tp4 is correct, even the re-makes have top notch animation/action, but it's still not that good.

and i'm not even talking about the glaring point that makes this anime unwatchable, that your POV (point of view) character is an emo b4 emo was a thing.

imo if they wanted to redo evangelion correctly, they should have done it from the POV of asuka (the redhead), she's at least mildly interesting. (however japanese suck at even attempting to make a decent POV from a girl, let alone a good one, 99.9% of animes have  a male, non sailormoon(magical girl) type pov, and they all suck, only good one is 12kingdoms)

Started Black Lagoon yesterday after numerous recommendations.  One word: AWESOME

I've heard you have to get through the first 10 episodes to get hooked..

I've tried maybe 6 times now.. furthest I got was episode 4..  sigh.... one day... one day...

Now that I nearly finished watching the whole series, I have to agree.  The later episodes are definitely better.  They are all basically 2-4 episode "mini story arcs."  You can jump straight to them IMO.  I recommend starting with episode 8 "Rasta Blasta"

I think that's "Excalibur" from Soul Eater.

Re-watching The 08th MS Team, such an awesome show.

My roommate and I watched the first 5 episodes of Basilisk last night, it's pretty cool. Very Ninja Scroll influenced.

Planning on finally watching Zeta Gundam (and maybe a few of the other early ones) when I finish The 08th.
Man, I just watched 08 mst, it was great!

I liked all of black lagoon equally, even the earlier episodes.

Thanks for all the recommendations in this topic, I'm sure I'll find something good to watch next. Currently I'm watching Full Metal Panic, as recommended by my old roommate.

good lord FMP is old as ****, which FMP are you watching? from memory there's FMP then the second season second raid, and then a spin off "slice of life" fumoffu. if it turns out you really like FMP, an anime i'd recommend would be Nadesico then, whatever you liked in FMP you'll see in Nadesico, only Nadesico is really old (like 97), i'm not an anime snob. but 95ish, is really where i can't go back, but with Nadesico, the animation, even in 97 (and imo holds up and is better than budget anime they pimp out now)is great since XEBEC did it

I tried watching Kill La Kill. The fan service pissed me off too much to watch it much longer.

Finished with Fate/Zero yesterday, great anime but the end was a bit wierd. I know this is supposed to be before the story in Fate/Stay Night though. Just a bit curious if it is worth to see Fate/Stay Night since I heard it is not as good. :/

i really like the second season just as much as the first. i really like the immigration and individual 11 story line. GITS is realer to me because of the politics that are involved as well as the philosophy. this is a show made for adults with an adult brain.

i have to admit its weakness though. the music in the show is great but the opening credits and end credits tracks in both seasons are just plain awful and the lyrical content of those tracks is hilariously bad. i really want to find a 1080p rip of these shows without the opening or ending credits.

hit up nyaa torrent. it usually will have the credits, but there are chapter marks so you just press page down to skip it.
