LOL really? The first one just take the start of the manga and add a completely different story that doesn't make sense at all (anche the movie was simply terrible XD)
QFT. I guess that is typical Gainax though lol. Always looking through the "human" perspective and posing questions like that. GAINAX FTWWWWW.How has noone said Gurren Lagann?
this is a very solid anime, if you're a bit "OLDER"... because young kids who are not reading between the lines, or do not have the pretext to do so would think the anime is just a crazy mish-mash..
It is a deep story that challenges you to reassess and evaluate what it means to be human, and where true limitations exist.

Right now I'm watching Bakemonogatari but I'm not sure if I like it yet.
I like a bit more mature animes, and full metal alchemist just lost my interest after 10-15ish episodes.Um art and fighting? Yes those are great parts of Afro Samurai and do well on their own, but the BEST feature of the anime is SAMUEL FREAKING JACKSON!
Brotherhood any better in that regard?
Might aswell add Afro Samurai to the list I recommend aswell, just due to the art and the fighting.

I think you have to looks at it from the context of when it came out. It's a bit dated, but the "camera angles" and perspectives were a huge influence on The Matrix, among others. Overall, the story is just OK, but the visual style was a real game changer.
Cromartie High School - Just sublime comedic genius. Unique. Nothing else in anime or outside it that's comparable really. Not to everyone's taste though.
Cowboy Bebop - You've probably already watched this over a decade ago. Probably one of the most watched, and well known animes in existence, but there's a reason for that; it just stands head and shoulders above almost everything else that was around at the time, and in my opinion almost everything else since too.
Titan lived up to the hype for me, it was everything I was looking for in an anime, and then some :D

Titan lived up to the hype for me, it was everything I was looking for in an anime, and then some :DAll they would need is to launch enough roped-bolts (ankers) into the giants to temporarily bring them to their knees.. and run in with a guy and kill the giant..
It's really the flow of the story that's upsetting to me. It'll be a balls out action scene for 2 minutes then an eternity of talking or focusing on something they could've spent a fraction of the time covering. It's difficult for me to get comfortable with the pacing, especially when you can predict exactly what's going to come next. Dragonball Z syndrome.
Oh, also I'm astonished no-one's mentioned Akira yet. In a thread like this made 10-15 years ago it would have been suggested about a million times by now. I like Akira, and it was the first Japanese animation I ever saw back in the early 90's, but there's other stuff I like better from that era. I think I probably just got caught in the first wave of kids to be exposed to Japanese cartoons outside of Japan (apart from the stealthy outsourced/co-developed ones like Thundercats or Ox Tales). So a lot of my youth was spent at the video store obtaining the first ever exported titles from Manga Entertainment. It seems corny now, but stuff like this blew my mind as a kid.
Finished Titan last night(unless I missed some episodes. 25, right?) and although it's flaws are apparent, it did get much better. A lot less downtime, and much more action. So much so, that they even glazed over a few very key plot points which seemed like a mistake in retrospect to the earlier episodes which spent so much time on things of lesser significance. One of the things that bugs me about anime is the cultural differences in emotive reactions, and I know it shouldn't bother me that much but when a character does something that changes the flow of the story or arc of their character I want to in some part understand where they are coming from, and AoT still has some of that but largely makes up the difference with a very strong militaristic sympathacation(not a word, but you know what I mean) vibe that kinda bugged me on a different level. The entire series seems to heavily push that 'civilians don't understand/sacrifice of the few for the whole' thing and at some points I felt like I was watching a recruitment video.
Much of the predictability in the first half of the series is MIA in the second half and it becomes just one long Red Wedding, which I kinda liked as it had the effect of drawing that small part of my caring about a character out and toyed with it. All in all, I wouldn't call it the masterpiece that so many have claimed. It's not 'good' like Deathnote or Bebop, but it's certainly not bad either. On an anime 1-10 scale of totally stale to groundbreaking and unforgettable I'd put it somewhere around a 7. I look forward to series 2.

i have attempted to watch a lot of anime. But honestly there is only one series i like:
Ghost in the Shell
pretty much all of it is amazing except the second movie which makes no sense no matter how familiar with the philosophy and characters you are. that movie was lost in translation.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is the best tv anime ever made. the second season was good but the major's boobs were too big.
If I can recommend something, it would be:
Full Metal Panic! - motherflippin robots and child soldiers and ecchi as hell
Full Metal Panic! Second Raid (third series, second series Fumoffu was filler only) - the same with more robots and undercover lesbian incest...
Infinite Stratos - harem shounen whatever with MOTHERFLIPPIN' robot suits and BOOBS! No to mention ecchi as F***!
Shingeki No Kyojin - good but not that much, but manga is kind of awesome
Code Geass R1 and R2 - robots, robots, teen boobs and more robots, just an occasional filler, lots of action and robot fights
Highschool of the Dead - motherflippin' awesome, zombies, guns, boobs, boob physics, katanas, ecchi as hell.
MOTHEERFLIPPIN' FAIRY TAIL, MAN!!! Just watch it for God's sake, it is so motheflippin' awesome! Aye Sir! And manga is also good, ecchi as hell...
My question is, are there any good new mecha anime, with good qualit fights, preferably military style like Full Metal Panic!? Otherwise I would watch Gundam 00...

I've heard Gundam Unicorn is good, but have kept away so far because it's being released like Helsing Ultimate was... I really hate the one episode per quarter thing, it drives me mad waiting months for the next episode... When it's almost finished I'll definitely be checking it out though! Also, Gundam 00 was pretty danm sweet, probably my favorite Gundam series so far.

Ah.... well.. it's good if you know absolutely "nothing" about cars going in...
For example, drifting in the "show" was considered "fast"... drifting in real life, is you've seriously ffff-ed up... and you're probably going to die.. and it also endangers the other race drivers..
While there's no wrong way to drive a car.. the way it's presented in the Initial-D story is VERY WRONG...
The goal in real racing, not "drift championships", is to get form point A and point B the quickest, drifting is absolutely NOT the way that's done..

That's why I love mecha anime. This kind of anime is the only kind, based on real laws of physics, matter, time and the precise amount of boob physics. :D

wellllll..... since most of those animes take place in SPACE... the ultimate size and jiggle capacity may in fact be accurate.
Well, I guess that creators of Inital-D just wanted to make a show about racing and also make it cool. Without drifting and fast and furious physics there wouldn't be much of bling to get out of this show.
You could also be mad at Code Geass, because the stature of the characters would only be possible with using exoskeletons, not good old spine, ribs and whatnot.

Code Geass doesn't need additional reasons to be mad at it. It has Ledouche, the most annoying anime character ever conceived.
4 pages and no sports?
- Hajime no Ippo
Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger
Slam Dunk
For sci/fi+action
- Elfen Lied
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan (this was mentioned before so I just wanted to repeat it for emphasis... Who doesn't like face robots?!?!?!?)
I would also recommend Berserk, which is my all time favourite manga, not so much as an anime. Read Berserk.

hahahahaha.... le-douche.... i didn't know h8ers have gone that far with the derogatory..
I don't find him annoying... is it at all possible that anime fans are just jealous of the character?
I mean.. he's fictionally got all the stuff that anime fans would "want" in real life...
Super intelligence, super good looks, mini-harem of women, he's of royal lineage, he's an underdog among his peers, he's a "victim" of injustice, thus a rebel..
Any one of those facets would fit the fiction fans' prerogative... in essence... the h8 is generated because ledouche is too over-powered... because he has EVERYTHING... and yet continues to lament and be unhappy...
WHILE the audience would switch places with him in an instance for ANY single of traits he possesses.

Clearly it is ranked 8 out of ? for best ? in the category of ? by ? since Ledouch is so annoying. Makes perfect sense.

Popularity alone proves nothing. In fact, awful pieces of media seem to be massively popular on a regular basis. There's almost an inverse correlation between popularity and quality like 80% of the time.
Well, I think that Lelouche (or whatnot) is kind of badass. Since he is young a single handedly broke down the whole empire (not to mention he sacrificed himself) is kind of ball-tearing badassery.
All I was saying was, that to make the anime show look cool, is to make it unreal, not physics accurate. Like teen girls firing bolt action sniper rifles while standing, dressed only in school uniform. It is appealing, makes the show fun to look at but the nerd inside you screams in pain...
What we say in our country, when we see such scientific nonsence is: Don't bother, it's a fairytale ;)
My favorites:
Evangelion
Samurai Champloo
Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Panic
The Prince of Tennis
Initial D
Hajime No Ippo
Trigun
Also have and enjoy:
Kenichi
Nodame Cantabile
KIBA (is okay)
Anyone that hasn't seen the above should have a go at some of these.
I think I must've missed something in samurai champloo.. i didn't think it was that great when i saw it...
But it's come up on here so many times.. I guess I gotta rewatch..
Attack on Titan was overrated. It isn't bad, but it falls apart if you actually start thinking and stop allowing yourself to fall prey to its manipulative and cheap-trick storytelling.Care to explain? And have you read the manga?
Lucky Star! *braces for hate*I actual saw a really ba looking guy today with a Lucky Star Satchel. Lucky Star is for real men I guess.
Slam Dunk - Still prob my #1 fav Anime/Manga series.

what is a "ba looking"
I just watched the Sword Art Online and guys, it is really epic and there were very feely moments in this. I would really recommend to watch. It is kind of light, but there is drama and all and all, it is fun.
Now I'm going to watch Valvrave ;)

that more mature feel?
Or the sci-fi feel?
Or the "half the eps are just stand alone stories and don't tie in chronologically with the story" feel? lol
Oldie but a goodie is Trigun
Appleseed from Masamune Shirow (creator of GITS)
Cowboy Beebop is good too.
Ergo proxy - dark mature anime
others i'd recommend that aren't that type of flavor but still good imo are
Trinity Blood
Chrno Crusade
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (skip the 1st FMA, its meh)
I just watched the Sword Art Online and guys, it is really epic and there were very feely moments in this. I would really recommend to watch. It is kind of light, but there is drama and all and all, it is fun.
Now I'm going to watch Valvrave ;)
First section made sense.. then the second part.. UGh........................... blehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............................murrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh...........................
I assume you've seen the original movie, the 2nd movie Innocence, GITS: SAC 1&2, GITS SAC SSS, and the newest one that just came out this year GITS Arise Eps 1 which is like a reboot.I watched over 300 different animes, so i can recommend u something if u post what anime u liked :D
Ghost in the Shell. I haven't found anything in that caliber. Suggestions?
that more mature feel?
Or the sci-fi feel?
Or the "half the eps are just stand alone stories and don't tie in chronologically with the story" feel? lol
Oldie but a goodie is Trigun

Thanks for Ergo Proxy, LOVE the art-style and it's quite unique compared to what I have been watching before
I just watched some episodes unbreakable machine girl...
Standard fan service stuff.. well done for the most part with respect to this "genre"..
What was more interesting to me is the concept of dolls.
Is a sufficiently complex doll that can reproduce (in some form), a life, a human?
I suppose this goes for Data from TNG as well.

maybe a hybrid? reminds me of armitage, where she had the ability to have kids. she did have a daughter and she seemed to age like a normal human.
also reminds me of that video game, binary domain.
Dunno how many here would like it but I watched Clannad & Clannad Afterstory and really liked them. It was a marked change from the previous animes like Code Geass, Bleach, Vandread and Naruto which I'd watched. If you enjoyed Evangelion you might enjoy watching RahXephon. To me they are somewhat similar in one distinct way.
Edit: Getting ready to watch Evangelion tonight and Attack on Titan will be next after that.

I saw the trailer. Ergo proxy is next on the list. I love this forum. Much more better than anime forums. No hate, just experience. I wrote this post on pbt blanks I bought form one of you. ¨¨
Thank you all.

Well, I really loved the first part. The second part was kind of meh, but it made sense. This anime found it's place on my backup harddrive. I will definitely watch it again ;)
God, I even shed a tear or two...
Code Geass doesn't need additional reasons to be mad at it. It has Ledouche, the most annoying anime character ever conceived.I thought "excalibur" from soul eater was more annoying.
Monogatari series is very interesting! Has a hate it or love it art style though tbh
Aria the Animation and the rest of the series were fantastic, great just to watch and relax to.
Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is a must watch. It. Has. Everything.
Both Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop were great.
Psycho Pass and Ghost in the Shell are great philosophical/thought provoking shows as well.

I watched ghost several times, and it's actually "not that deep".. essentially simply adapting the constitution of mind vs body arguments towards our computer age.
But this is the same basic question on "doubt" and meaning of "existence".

Oh man I just started watching Attack on Titan. It is insane good. Up there with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.
Favorite Anime in no particular order
- Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
- Akira
- Any Studio Ghibli
- Trigun
- Cowboy Bebop
- Attack on Titan
- Fruits Basket (Shuddup, I love it. So relentlessly positive)
- Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th Mobile Suit Team
- Gundam Wing (I watched this in high school, no idea if it's actually good)
Anyone know where you can watch Cowboy Bebop online legitimately?

Have you seen Patlabor series? I was amazed to hear Mamoru is making a live action version to release next year. I hope it turns out as good as Avalon!
Only watched one anime before, I think it's pretty good. :p
Claymore
Sure that is generally true, most live action manga/anime adaptations are generally quite bad (though some are highly entertaining because of this as well!), but Mamoro Oshii has a pretty good track record with live actions so probably an exception.

chk out the manga... and it tells you what happens AFTER the anime.. SOLID..
claymore anime only went up to volume 11, i think it's on volume 25 today..

Is the anime storyline exactly like the manga, should i start from 12 or from the start :-*

I have not read the manga but the anime is solid.

Incredibly true. Prince of Tennis' live actions were cringe-worthy. Nodame Cantabile on the other hand wasn't too bad.

No, I am not.
Hey, been away from the anime scene for a couple seasons. Anything worth watching from summer/fall/winter 2013? I watched Servant x Service from summer 2013 and I really enjoyed it.

I have also been somewhat away from the newer anime (the joys of having small internet pipe). Maybe Sakurasou no pet na kanojo?
Saw Evangelion 3.0 in theatres today in NYC. Wish it wasn't English dubbed but still really cool seeing it on the big screen.

Toriko
Durarara
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Just a few there :P
I've been enjoying Fairy Tail of late-- it has a "off-brand One Piece" feel to it. A similar art style, and plenty of worldbuilding and foreshadowing in the first 48 episodes-- all that's on Netflix presently.

Started Black Lagoon yesterday after numerous recommendations. One word: AWESOME
I just watched Kotonoha no Niwa, that movie and 5cm per second such great movies :thumb:
I like Darker than Black.
FLCL is also a good classic :thumb:
I heard Madoka was surprisingly good. Anything produced by shaft is decent. Bakemonogatari and all the other gataris

I really wanted to like Bakemonogatari, but it was just boring. I loved the characters and art style but couldn't get into the story. Is Nisemonogatari much different?

Perhaps because Eiichiro Oda was the author and artist for both?

Nisemonogatari starts off slowly but it picks up midway. Monogatari is pretty good.
I think these shows are harder to get into because the style (conversational, puns, satire) and not much happens.
I got pretty bored watching Nisemonogatari.
I'm not sure if native Japanese speakers would this show more engaging but I think they'd appreciate the dialogue more than us.

I've heard it's one of Oda's assistants; much as how he started out as an assistant for the guy doing Ruroni Kenshin if I recall right.

Re-watching The 08th MS Team, such an awesome show.Man, I just watched 08 mst, it was great!
My roommate and I watched the first 5 episodes of Basilisk last night, it's pretty cool. Very Ninja Scroll influenced.
Planning on finally watching Zeta Gundam (and maybe a few of the other early ones) when I finish The 08th.
I liked all of black lagoon equally, even the earlier episodes.Started Black Lagoon yesterday after numerous recommendations. One word: AWESOME

good lord FMP is old as ****, which FMP are you watching? from memory there's FMP then the second season second raid, and then a spin off "slice of life" fumoffu. if it turns out you really like FMP, an anime i'd recommend would be Nadesico then, whatever you liked in FMP you'll see in Nadesico, only Nadesico is really old (like 97), i'm not an anime snob. but 95ish, is really where i can't go back, but with Nadesico, the animation, even in 97 (and imo holds up and is better than budget anime they pimp out now)is great since XEBEC did it
I tried watching Kill La Kill. The fan service pissed me off too much to watch it much longer.good lord FMP is old as ****, which FMP are you watching? from memory there's FMP then the second season second raid, and then a spin off "slice of life" fumoffu. if it turns out you really like FMP, an anime i'd recommend would be Nadesico then, whatever you liked in FMP you'll see in Nadesico, only Nadesico is really old (like 97), i'm not an anime snob. but 95ish, is really where i can't go back, but with Nadesico, the animation, even in 97 (and imo holds up and is better than budget anime they pimp out now)is great since XEBEC did it

i really like the second season just as much as the first. i really like the immigration and individual 11 story line. GITS is realer to me because of the politics that are involved as well as the philosophy. this is a show made for adults with an adult brain.
i have to admit its weakness though. the music in the show is great but the opening credits and end credits tracks in both seasons are just plain awful and the lyrical content of those tracks is hilariously bad. i really want to find a 1080p rip of these shows without the opening or ending credits.
