Keycon Montreal is on for April 11!

It's on!

Since I realized a lot of really cool GH'ers live in Montreal and it's less than 5 hours' drive from me, I have decided to do a meetup. After a secretive IC via PM I seem to have whipped up some interest.

Right now we are looking at sometime in early April, but I'm free just about any weekend. Please register your interest here!

Interested parties:

Swill
GL1TCH3D

DOX (!!)
Merranza
tchevass
nathanrosspowell

clackhead

Toronto Coalition:
Elton
Sifo
Frostytoast

Day and venue confirmed April 11 at Swill's place.

Since this won't be a large meetup like Keycon we can easily meet at a resteraunt or park, but a house or business / conference room would be the best.

I have PM'd all those interested, but if you live in the area and want to come, please post here.

Please please please consider doing this in the second week of June. I'll be in town then.

Edit: That awkward moment when I realize the OP is a year old :(. My statement still stands though and meetups are fun :).

I am definitely interested in this. My main challenge will be to convince my wife to let me go on a weekend, but the earlier I know the date the easier the negotiation.

As for the date itself, as long as I know it 2-3 weeks in advance I should be ok. I am out of the country from 9th of June to 16 of June +- 1 day. Other than that, I usually have nothing planned 2-3 weeks in advance.

As for the place I live a good 30-45 min out of Montreal and my girlfriend is not such a keyboard lover hehe. But I have a car so wherever you want to do it is fine for me.

I will check out which weekends are possible from my side and I will also look into getting us a venue.  I have access to a venue that would work well if I can get it on a weekend.  Once I have an idea of dates I will check and see if I can match up any dates with the venue being available...

Well we are not married yet, but it's mostly a mater of time and money and priorities for said money. My 2 kids are all the rings I need, but we will get married eventually!

Sounds like a good date for montreal meetup #2

I know this topic is a year old but I resurrected it because it's relevant and I know I can pressure the OP to add info to it :p

My negotiation has begin. It goes well. The acceptance step is done. Now will be the harder part of negotiating for longer meetup lol.

As for keyboards, I can mostly bring model F's. I will definitely bring my F122 and could bring either an AT F or Filco with browns if there's enough interest.

I will be happy to try new cherry switches like clears and linear's too! I would also like to try alps and Topre and other funky switches (beamspring anyone?)

This will be good!

Do we have tentative dates yet?  I am looking into booking a venue, so we will have to start figuring out the details regarding dates.

I will check with my wife's school schedule and the dates I can get the venue and then I will propose a couple dates.  Sound good?

This will be good!
I'll be bringing 5-10 model fs and 1-3 beamspring, see my second post.

OOH I forgot that I have both the oldest known and newest known model F 122-key. I can bring both of those to compare. I might have sold my AT model F by then we'll see.

cant wait to try hipro again. that's pretty much the only topre im interested in (other than utron) i didn't get too much of a chance to try haata's at keycon.

anyway SSKs aren't that heavy, especially compared with a 6020218. Are you walking or something? :p

April 11?

It dodges Easter and isn't too far in the future. I'll run it past DOX to see if he can make it.

But yes please check the venue and propose something, that'd make it a lot easier.

I was going to offer to bring more KBs if anyone wanted to try more cherry but It looks like I'll probably have to back off a little on what I'm bringing to make it all fit on the tables.

I'd have to take the bus / metro if this is going to be downtown. I'd like to avoid a repeat of when I was carrying $3000 of audio equipment on the metro >.>

I think that's right before my 2 hardest exams so it'll really be based on how much studying I've done before then

Alright, here is a little update from my side.

I have tentatively booked a venue for Sat April 11th.  I have validated that I can book the space and I have verified via the calendar that the space is free.  I made my request tonight and I see no reason why I wouldn't get it.

The venue is at our office.  It is kind of a funky office space in an old warehouse.  We have a big open area in the front where we have events.  We even have a projector if we want to use it.

Here is an idea of what the space looks like:

We have a bar, but I don't think we can technically serve alcohol because we don't have a liquor license.  I don't think it will be a problem if we bring it though.  I can check on this...

It is pretty centrally located at Notre-Dame and Rue Guy (fyi: rue = street).  It is about a 10 minute walk from Lucien-L'Allier which is both a metro and the commuter train station for downtown.
Here is a link to google maps... (https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Rue+Notre-Dame+O+%26+Rue+Guy,+Montr%C3%A9al,+QC+H3J/@45.4900999,-73.5672149,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x4cc91a64129acdf5:0x5df3071246ed367c)

Most importantly I have made sure that I have the day free.  :)  My wife usually works on Saturdays and I usually have the little guy, so we made a slight modification to our schedule.  I don't think it hurts that my birthday is the day before (the 10th).  :P

I think we are good to go people...  :)

I think I have like 5-10 tables put together that I can just pull out into the space.  I have another 10(ish) that are piled against a wall that I can screw the legs onto if we need them, so we are good.  We could pretty much fill the space wall to wall with the tables we have there, so we are all set.  :)

I will bring the following:
- Filco TKL (Browns)
- FC660C
- Unicomp
- Dell with black alps if we want
- Sprit 75% (if I have a chance to build it by then)
- swill60 (if I have a chance to build it by then)

I will also bring a bunch of keycaps so people can see them in person.
Notably:
- Penumbra
- Dolch (and a bunch of color mods)
(I am sure I am missing some here)

I will also bring a bunch of artisan caps.  I am always willing to trade caps that are not part of my matching sets, so bring artisans if you are interested in trades...

I am sure I will think of other stuff before the time comes...

I have the place all day, so that is not a limiting factor.

My main limiting factor is the train schedule to get downtown on the weekend.  One train arrives at 9:00AM and the next arrives at Noon.   The trains that I can catching to head home are at 5:30PM and 10:30PM.

I suspect I will probably plan to arrive at 9:00AM and leave at 5:30PM.  Not sure how long we want, so I am just planning to be there most of the day to be safe.  There are a bunch of pubs around the corner if we get bored.  :P

I may be able to take the car, but I am not going to plan for that since I suspect my wife will want it to go do stuff while I am out.

I believe that CPTBadAss will be in town from June 6-12th (to be confirmed), so we will likely do round 2 then.  Maybe that is possible?  Those are excellent dates to be in Montreal, it is beautiful then...

I'll see if I can get my hands on a novatouch. I do want to buy one eventually mainly because novatouch + SA keycaps is really sublime. I prefer it to standard topre, though havent tried a/b with hipro. I think i'm not the only one who wants to do that comparison.

If I get the job I interviewed for today I will absolutely be buying and then bringing a novatouch.

Only if this was around May..

I believe that CPTBadAss will be in town from June 6-12th (to be confirmed), so we will likely do round 2 then.  Maybe that is possible?  Those are excellent dates to be in Montreal, it is beautiful then...

I am wondering... with Dorkvader bringing more than his weight in keyboards to the meetup, how much are the fuel costs for 10 hours worth of return journey driving with 150lbs of boards on board?

Some geek wants to calculate this for fun?

It's not significant relative to the weight of the car..

You guys are no fun.

My car is rated for 35 MPG highway and I usually get 32-36 depending on how fast I drive. Curb weight is listed at 2800 Lb, Ming removed at least 400 Lb of material from the car making it at most 2400 Lb. If I add back that 400 Lb as me (130 Lbs) plus keyboards (260 Lbs), the percent difference in weight is (2400-2800)/(2400) = 17%, which is quite a bit actually. I suspect I might be carrying more than 260 Lbs of keyboards, but it'll depend a lot on what I bring.

Now, fuel economy is based most on speed and RPM, but we can assume that'll be the same if I have keyboards (or a passsenger) or not. After that, fuel economy is based exponentially on wind resistance, but we are also assuming my driving habits and the amount of trucks I drive behind will be the same. Finally, the third factor it's based on is weight (which affects resistance) and I believe it scales linearly.

So we can guess that I'll use as much as 15% more fuel on the way.

Now the whole trip is 600 miles, so unladen I expect to use 17 gallons of fuel, and laden I expect to use 19-20 gallons. The price difference would be about $7, which I think is probably worth it.

I just thought of something: I don't have any canadian currency handy. If someone wants to buy gas for me in canada I will be happy to pay them back via payapl.

You guys (TP and onewolf) clearly are not Model F fanatics like Dorkvader and you haven't noticed that he listed an entire army of beam springs and Model Fs.

I was expecting him to bring more than his weight in keyboards, but wasn't even expecting 2x his weight in keyboards. But it makes sense, given that many boards that he is bringing have full metal casings and nearly every model he has listed is 10++ lbs each. I think the Skeldon must be Dorkvader's lightest keyboard.

That said, I don't feel very good about Dorkvader's testimony that 'Ming removed 400lbs of material from my car'. Sam, what 400lbs of material would that be? I trust the spare tyre and toolbox are not among the stuff Ming removed?

The rear was stripped out: no panels or sound deadening. The rear seats were removed (though I do still have them) and most of the rest came out of the suspension when it was upgraded. Even the radio was removed. It's just an estimate but you'd be surprised what all that plastic panelling weighs.

DONT buy gas in Canada. Full you car before crossing the lines. Gas has like 100% taxes in Canada, cost at least twice in Canada than in US as far as I know, so even your 20% gain in CA$ won't be enough lol!

Good to know. My car has a pretty long range so I think I'll be fine as long as I fill up in Burlington Vt. (100 mi from montreal, I have a range of ~300 mi, and getting one or two gallons in Canada won't ruin me.)

It's more like a 25% gain right now, actually :(

Gas prices right now are around a dollar per litre in Ontario, which translates to around $3.80 a gallon, which is $3.00 USD a gallon. Is gas that much cheaper in the states, or that much more expensive in QC? Last time I was in the states I seem to recall it being in the 3-4 dollar range, but I could be misremembering. That was a couple years ago, regardless.

Yes. This is really important. Gas is more than twice the price up here.  Fill up at Swanton which is like 5 miles from the border.  If you have any questions about the trip, let me know. I have driven it about 20 times (if not more).

$100/gallon is quite excessive here (obvious sarcasm intended)

But at $1.2-1.3/litre it gets farly expensive

The NMB should be restored by then. I've been meaning to build a new case for the Chicony as the switches are nice but the case is super tinny and hollow sounding. I think it'd be a nicer experience with a solid case.

If I'm lucky, I'll have the 87U with 45g uniform by then as well, but it's not that likely considering shipping to Canada.

If there's anything from my signature I should bring, let me know.

I have two NMBs that are both clicky. Keep in mind that you can make any of the switches from clicky to linear by removing the little white piece from the switch (easy to do). Only the full-on tactile switches are different as they have a notch in the leaf contacts.

I did 50g clears on my infinity and have been having serious issues with it. Too light I think.

I like 65g clears but that's just my preference. I am very interested to try out the trampoline mod regardless of switch type. I haven't tried 65g browns yet though so maybe I'll like them.

GoN says that anything lighter than 55g won't work for clears.

Even using a 55g spring, without lube, the switch won't even reset without a keycap on.

I used sprit springs. I lubed my switches and I tend to do more grease than oil in my mix, so that could have played into it. Also, I was using SA caps, so they are heavier.

The switches worked fine, but I did notice a little lag as the switch topped out and it was enough for me to switch to 65g.

Nope :(. I live no where near Montreal unfortunately.  I live in good ole Nebraska in the states.  Just posted cuZ it happens to be on my birthday.  Maybe someday I'll get to go to a meet up somewhere.

Of course I'll need to get food and such.

I'll show up at the same time as others, whenever that happens to be.

I need to pack my luggage.

Do you know of a good place to park a car for the day near the meetup? The closest that I know of is the one down McGill college street.

Around that area, it's super easy to find parking, especially on the weekend. Look on Guy, William street is good too. I think you have to pay on Notre-Dame around that area.

Right around the corner from the location is a parking lot which is free (from what I can tell). I parked there a few times when I drove to work and never had a problem.

It's not a typo -- "Avril" is French for "April"

As the meetup is in Montreal, it seems appropriate.

Ah nice, I think it's owned for the Richmond restaurant, but how can they tell?

I changed the title to make it 100% English  :p

Also, are we going to call for some pizza or the likes? Yea I tend to think about important things first (like food)  :thumb:

Yes, the parking is for the restaurant, but they never fill it so they don't seem to care.

Yes, we can either order pizza or plan to go around the corner to Brasseur de Montréal for some food and a beer at a specific time (I would just stick a note on the door for how to get there if we do this). It is literally around the corner and they have really good food and beer.

Let this not hamper our time.

I should be able to drive you both ways, depending on the distance and if oneproduct is riding with me or not (and wants to take a detour).

I'm going to start packing tonight. Hopefully I can get enough in my car by the time I leave.

Hi, this meet-up has been amazing. First, I want to thank Swill for hosting this. Second, I want to thank Dorkvader for coming and bringing his 25+ keyboards. And to all who attented, you were all amazing people.

One of the great things of this meetup, other than just be able to talk to everyone about keyboards and stuff, was to be able to try all these different keyboards. Before this meeting, I only had tried mx brown (filco) and model F. Here's my impression on the different boards I tried:

Hall effect: These just feel so damn nice and their sound (bottom out) is just amazing. I don't think I would like them for typing since they are linear, but for gaming these would be awesome.
Beamsping: I had great expectations for this keyboard. It ends up it's just not for me. The sound is truly amazing, but the switches are too soft and too wobbly for my personnal taste.
Topre: I am glad I have tried them. They feel high quality, but they are WAY too soft and too smooth and cushioned for my taste. I can see how someone would like them, but they are almost the opposite of what I like in a switch. One positive thing is that they don't wobble.
Alps: There were not many alps, mainly the japanese ibm one that Dorkvader likes a lot. To me, it's a nice keyboard that just feels inferior to my model F (I am biased towards the model F). But for the cost of the keyboard, I admit it's a very nice option.
Model M: I was glad to try a few model M. I wanted to verify if the model F is that better than the M as is often said. While the M feels good, it confimed to me that the model F just feels much better.
Cherry: I liked my cherry brown filco. I still like it but I am now in love with the F and can't go back to cherry. But if I had to, well stock clears would be my choice. I prefered the stock clears over the 62g clears. But I admit that I got used to heavier switches because of the F so it might be the main reason for this. I also like the black switch a lot and have been impressed by the feeling of a wyse keyboard with blacks. Also, the trampoline mod from Swill was nice, but it had such a sh6rot travel and I like having quite a lot of travel so it was just not for me.
Model F: I have been in love with the F for about a year. I didn't have much to compare it to but it felt just awesome. After trying all these different keyboards with different switches, I am happy to now know that the model F is definitely my favorite keyboard/switch. It's a very very good thing for my budget. Well, until I can transform my Xt's to reverse TKL layout with wcass project!

Ergonomics: I was happy to try different ergo keyboards and non-staggered keyboards. I think that I would still prefer a non split keyboard if I need to use the mouse, but for pure typing they would be very nice. I also think that I could get used pretty fast to non-staggered keyboards. I would have a hard time with a few keys for a time, but the fact that the keys are one above the other just feels more normal for my brain. I just don't know if I would want to make the jump or not. I also tried the hand-rest that has a mouse on a bar buit in and if it was not for the price I would probably get one. But I think that I would still prefer to invest on making a reverse TKL layout to simply have the mouse more aligned with my arm.

As for the eyes, well there was some keyboard porn:

First, the F with the metal case (the one super super wide similar to the kishsaver) had such an awesome case and paint job. That's a real beauty.

Second, Swill had a brass case that was just epic. It's time to forget aluminium and titanium and get real with brass on GH.

Also, the Miami set just looks very nice and super shiny like if it was summer all the time.

I also want to mention that my brain was just complety exhausted for having to focus on speaking and listening to English all day long. I am quite bilingual, but I NEVER speak it and almost never listen to conversations in English for a long time (longer is a movie or tv show usually). But it was also a nice experience in itself!

So I want to conclude by saying that this meeting was a LOT of fun and that I will be happy to attend another one if I can!

Just wanted to echo what JPG said, amazing meet up. Really nice to geek out in a really chill environment. There was a wide range of knowledge levels but everyone brought something to the table.

Main take aways for me:

1) I now really want a Model F
2) I like heavy switches, but not 120g spring heavy
3) I think I'm going to get a 55g Topre board
4) I should start working on some custom board designs
5) My GB's better all come in before the next meet up!
6) Everyone should keep a LightSaver at their bedside for home defence
7) "Fvck stickering, dude"  :))

I really didn't think I was going to get such a positive reaction to the idea when I threw it out there. You guys really took it upon yourselves to make it a great gathering.

There was such a huge selection of exceptional, unique and incredibly rare boards to try.

Thank you Thank you Thank you.

P.S. I hope the pizza was good :)

En résumé,

1) I need a lightsaver, for self defence and for typing!
2) Beamspring is one of my favorite so far
3) Topre 55g no more
4) I need a thumbstick on my keyboard
5) Model Fs are great!
6) You folks are great company!
7) Edit: I need a keyboard with the hall effect spacebar. SO NICE

Too bad I will miss the next meet-up in june, but I'll be in JP so hopefully I can bring back some interesting keyboards :)

6) You folks are great company!
7) Edit: I need a keyboard with the hall effect spacebar. SO NICE

Too bad I will miss the next meet-up in june, but I'll be in JP so hopefully I can bring back some interesting keyboards :)

If this is Hall Effect, I really want it. mmmmmm, It's even nicer than that HE numpad with the highly painted surface!

Yep hall effect. tripleshots. latching "keyboard lock" switch.

I happen to have two of them. This is the one I haven't cleaned the caps on yet.

The other one is a full on video editor computer system from the early 1980's. since it weighs about 30 lbs i left it at home this time.

Holy mother of keyboards, that thing is a beast! BTW, what do you use to clean them? Any product in specific for the pcb or the switches?

Also, nice pictures everyone!

Dangnabbit, can't believe I missed this!  :(

CaptainBadass (famous member) is supposed to come to Montreal on June and there's supposed to be another meetup when he comes. Stay tuned on GH if you don't want to miss it!

Lol i dunno about famous. Maybe #3 spammer on Geekhack but thank you for the kind words. I've confirmed I'll be in MTL in June and I've told swill. I'll leave it to him with how he'd like to proceed.

i use non alcohol wet wipes. they are "off brand" and cheaper. I got non alcohol by mistake and haven't used them all yet. i just sit down with something to clean every time i watch tv\

i'll make a note to weigh the bigger brother when i take it out to photo.

Originally meant for 1 handed chording.
Might see what fun applications I can make with both together. Just need the teensy+coding and I'm all set =)

Still trying to figure out how to get the full res from my new phone

weight of unit is 19 lbs 7 oz = 8800 g
weight of the unit at canada: 7 lbs = 3200 g
weight of the green / yellow one is 7lbs 7 oz = 3370 g

because then i have to download them off dropbox  and upload them to flickr. i am using onedrive now and this is the problem. i think the best is to sync the photos to my computer automatically when i plug it in and then upload them from there.

When your keyboard has a fan, you're in business. Serious business.

Also, how do the angled keys feel? Are they as smooth as the non-angled ones?

And do you know if the Hall Effect switches have the part that changes the high/low values of the sensor into an on/off signal inside the switch or if this job is done by the controller?

Anyway, badass keyboard, badass keycaps, just sad it's so damn big!

the kb unit itself is the same as the one i brought with me. both it and the green one with yellow function keys have angled stems. in fact i think all hall effect with sculpted profile have angled stems. the keys are more scratchy than the one i brought since it's more used and i haven't cleaned the switches yet (corrosionx is supposed to work wonders)

all the high / low sensing (and debounce) is handled by the sensor itself. it output about 3v when pressed which is brought  to 5v by pullup resistors. some boards are 5v unpressed and pull down to 0v when pressed but that is all handled by the kb hardware (outside switch and before controller)

sadly most of these kbs are set up as 1kro, though some strobe the colums for nkro.

Oh so it's handled on the pcb. I am curious because I watched a few video on youtube about hall effect sensors and in some of them there's an included part that reacts to the high/low property of the sensor and converts the high/low to on/off (if I understood right). But on another video, the guy mentions that this is irrelevant if plugged in a controller because the controller can decide to do whatever he wants with the signal.

I am pretty new to electronics but by knowing that, I assume that the controller can detect the voltage that comes back and then a programmer could decide to do whatever he wants with the signal. I didn't know such a thing but if it's true that would make it much easier to make a controller work for Hall Effect. All you would need to do is to wire all the switches with a traditional row/columns setup with diodes and scan the current column by column and then all the controller would need to do compared to a normal mech keyboard would be to convert the high/low value to on/off and pass the signal to the standard code.

I really need to start reading about these teensies lol!

yeah, i gave a talk on them at keycon  last summer but it was pretty dry. one of these days, i'll write up a thing on them but not right now.

to get an idea of how it works and how it debounces, look up the drawings at the end of this article http://deskthority.net/wiki/Honeywell_Hall_Effect and especially the hallbook i found http://sensing.honeywell.com/index.php?ci_id=47847

now the hallbook is about hall sensors in general but the beginning is all theory that explains it well, and the last 80 or so pages are applications (non kb related for the most part.)

the debounce is handled by a schmitt trigger. basically there's the hall element, the "balance" transistors (that amplify the difference), and the schmitt trigger that adds hysterisis and debounce, then the output pins.

so it's almost all handled by the hall sensor itself, leaving the controller to do the really easy task of determining if there's 5v or not there. this was a big deal in 1968 when processing things like debounce was a lot harder than it is today.

if you're interested in it, i'd love to chat sometime. i really like these hall switches and i want to get these kbs working!

Of course of course

There's Layton audio, my personal favorite. Lots of variety for the personal audio lover (headphones).

There's Son Ideal which deals mostly with mid end speakers

Then there's audioshop for high end speaker systems and a small collection of headphones. Up until this year they were the only ones carrying Stax in Montreal (and probably one of a handful in Canada) but Layton recently took their spot.

Of course I can accompany you to those. The owners of Layton are very picky people, they don't like people trying the higher end stuff with no intention of buying, even if you know them and such. The owners/employees at audio shop are much more lenient in that respect and as long as you're friendly / know your stuff they'll let you try.

There's also MaxAudio but I hate the owner and he hates me. It's too bad about the timing because I'm aiming for an audio meet mid August.
