Title: Snack Food Recommendations
Post by: SpAmRaY on Mon, 20 January 2014, 10:02:06
So does anyone geek out on snack foods?

Currently I'm into flavored nuts.

Also are there any foods you consider safe to eat at your keyboard?

Do you also like coke zero vs diet coke?

Nice spam!

Do you also like coke zero vs diet coke?

They have different and unique flavors, I don't mind the occasional diet coke, but coke zero is pretty good all the times.

Human body loves acids, so it's not like that's a problem.

Also good to hear about your teeth. I mean, they're not mine, but good to see people aren't rotting away here.

Soda isn't bad for your teeth unless you drink it and don't rinse right afterwards..

The large sugar molecules left on your teeth is what the bacteria feeds on to cause the oral chemistry around your teeth to become highly acidic.  This is responsible for tooth decay..

Not the acid in the soda itself.. because it's not like you're soaking ur teeth in liquid soda..

well, at least I hope not.

Hey guys, I hate to be the boring health-food guy, but really you could do better than pop-tarts and doritos.

Raw nuts (deez nuts?), seeds, greek yoghurt, and of course good 'ol apples are all healthy choices that will make your body healthier, instead of sicker.  Please try it.

Careful with coke :3

I kinda got into it, I only realised I had an issue when I couldn't tell you the last time I drank water. Stopped drinking coke (I was only drinking Diet because it was cheaper) and lost half a stone in less than a month and I only weighed 13 stone to start with.

Just to clarify I'm big, not a fat midget :3

I'm all about eating healthier if I knew what I was doing....it just so easy to buy cheap, easily available crap to eat instead :(

so your saying you stay stoned most of the time? with midgets? my reading comprehension is questionable at best.

the only grape juice I've seen in stores is heavily sweetened by HFC.. I've never seen bottles of Natural 100% grape juice. it's mostly from concentrate.. which means it's denatured juice.. then they put in a flavor pack...

you don't need a deep fryer.

You just need like  a 1/2 centimeter of oil.. and throw the chip in, and it goes pooooof..

a note on this btw:  They contain a lot of MSG so if you're allergic, don't eat it.
Also be very careful if you don't use a deep fryer as the oil will jump/splashback pretty rough.
If you don't have a proper cooling exhaust system and only say a carbon exhaust system, you'll end up with lots of smoke and shrimp chip smell for a while.

Side note: I prob will piss off a few people, but try not to buy anything of this type that is product of china
you really have no idea what type of preservatives or chemicals they're using on those things lol.
And they're really sneaky about this too, their labels will have japanese or korean but on the back in small letters it'll be like "product of china"

Spam btw if you realized the stuff I sent you was all not made in China haha.

I'll admit..there no telling what I've eaten...I hardly ever check labels :p

My two go tos for chip snacks, but I mostly do raw almonds, blueberries, bananas and greek yogurt these days as I'm trying to watch my MSG intake.

Um... the bad milk powder was true..

but the reuse of waste oil was a hoax...  Tabloid if you will...  and China has a large low income class population with a very narrow scope of information, they've been mostly responsible for the wave of "entertainment news"..

Think... an army of "fox-news" drones and believers...

The oil stuff isn't a hoax if you actually been in the areas and seen it.

If you do travel to china, never drink the water there also lol.
Any restaurant you go to, ask for a glass of ice.
check to make sure the ice is clean, otherwise only drink bottle water and don't drink the tea

it's customary for Fast food places to Reuse fry oil..

If you've ever had Chinese food in the united states for example..

U know those delicious fried chicken-wings?  depending on how successful the restaurant is, but GENERALLY they only change the fry oil every 2 weeks....

Some places 3 weeks.. and the really poor areas, 1 month...

I'm not saying this is good practice... but this is EVERYwhere

that said... i don't recommend you eat at Chinese restaurants often.

cause you weren't my secret santa.
The oil stuff isn't a hoax if you actually been in the areas and seen it.

If you do travel to china, never drink the water there also lol.
Any restaurant you go to, ask for a glass of ice.
check to make sure the ice is clean, otherwise only drink bottle water and don't drink the tea

The waste oil exists.. but that doesn't mean they're actually using it...

go around some of the nightmarkets and see what they use =)

it's customary for Fast food places to Reuse fry oil..

Couldn't agree more.  I live in NYC and the Chinese takeout here is absolutely disgusting.  I had a buddy in high school whose family was in the business and he used to tell me horror stories about the common meat suppliers all these restaurants use, along with all the other grimey things like never changing the oil, etc.  Taco Bell etc is cleaner because at least it's a regulated chain.

RE Chinese food:  What do you mean don't drink the tea?  The tea is at least made with BOILED water, isn't it?  (I guess it must be a little bit okay, anyway... I spent a month with my family visiting mainland China when it was first opened to tourism, and all I drank was (hot) Coke and tea.  Lots and lots and lots of tea.  Never got sick at all.  We even avoided the ice, hence the hot Coke...)

As for the oil, meh...  I remember my grandparents keeping bacon drippings in a big can, and scooping out a spoonful when necessary for eggs or summat on t he stove and the grease would just sit there forever on the stove top in a coffee can, never emptied or thrown out and everytime bacon was made, just poured the grease into that can as well. Sometimes if the dogs were lucky, a spoonful got mixed in with their kibble just because. If its being used to deep fry anything it isn't as if there is going to be any bacteria alive in there or whatever...  And Chinese people live quite a long time for all the unsanitary , actually.  Maybe from building up stronger immune systems from eating all that dirt.  =)

But really how do you people eat all the nuts and stuff without getting HUGE?

Popcorn - plain old popcorn, maybe with a little butter or salt is a great way to go.  Also if you have to go with nuts, I like salted sunflower seeds in the shell - makes for some burning of the calories in the nuts to do the work of eating em that way (but the shells do invade the keyboard, so that sucks...)

Popcorn is about the only thing that won't make me totally sick if I just sit and munch my way through a ton of it though.  And its better than most processed things and not high calorie either but still highly satisfying.

I also like hard candy too.  Sour stuff like apple jolly ranchers or Now n' Laters.

Trying to quit drinking soda, or at least cut down because I have to lose a little weight and I drink way too much of it  Never touch the diet crap though. just cause it tastes gross.  But since my friend lost a ton of weight just by quitting the soda, I am trying to do some substitution of warm water with some lemon.  The lemon really does help me drink more water, surprisingly   It gives it a bit of flavor and feels like a caloric beverage instead.

The only thing I really hate about popcorn is the skins getting stuck in my teeth and gums... but I have gotten to be quite good at preparing it on the stovetop without scorching or leftover unpopped kernels or excess oil and just the right amount of fluffiness.  Might have to go make some right now...

The absolute BEST snack in the whole world, and I've eaten just about everything that has ever swam, flew, walked or climbed here on Earth.

http://www.jerky.com.au/jerkytrypacks.htm (http://www.jerky.com.au/jerkytrypacks.htm)

The Crocodile jerky is really nice, chewy as hell but the lasting after-taste makes you feel like, I got one over on you, ya bastard  :thumb: .  They also can soak the meat in various spices if so requested.

In fact everything seems to love these snacks, dogs, cats, and even bull-ants.  The little blighters crawled up my leg into my pocket to get a feed on the croc jerky, all 30 of them.  Never let them anywhere near your 'valuables' due to their gaping jaws.  Nasty little critters when they get a taste for meat.

Needs some more Canadian snacks!

Miss Vickie's Sweet Chili & Sour Cream. Best flavoured kettle chips I've had. The chip bags aren't drenched in oil like the "kettle chips" brand and I much prefer the crunch on Miss Vickie's. Definitely worth a try if you get the chance.

My two go tos for chip snacks, but I mostly do raw almonds, blueberries, bananas and greek yogurt these days as I'm trying to watch my MSG intake.

Popcorners are fantastic! Although they're addicting to the point where I would waste my keyboard funds on popcorners alone
Jalapeno chips are also fantastic! They taste great but aren't like popcorners where I instantly eat the whole bag.

Really you have my top picks, but other than that I prefer to eat dry cereal and kettle cooked chips.

I agree with apples but ONLY organic.  They are one of the most heavily pesticide contaminated crops out there.

For Raw nuts I agree if you soak them to help neutralize the phytic acid.

Greek yogurt ... I'd recommend sheep or goats milk full fat yogurt.  At least for me it's a lot easier on my body.

Diet sodas are no worse for you than drinking water. Unless you buy into the unfounded ideas that artificial sweeteners are bad for vaguely bad for you somehow.
I'm not arguing with you but my diet in no way changed, apart from cutting out coke, losing about 10lb in a month.
Coke or Diet/Zero Coke? If you cut out regular Coke then of course, that makes a huge impact. If you cut out sugar-free sodas then that's a very strange result, as diet sodas are generally calorie-free and consist of just 99.99% water then trace amounts of artificial sweetener and flavouring.

Many of the artificial sweeteners (Aspartame, etc) are proven harmful, but possibly worse is the "conditioning" to choose extremely sweet tastes.

...if you consume a whole bathtub full at once. You would die from hyponatremia (too much water) before you would suffer any ill effects from artificial sweeteners. I agree about learning to eat right though. There is nothing more unnatural than sugar (other than the naturally occurring sugar already contained within a particular food) in the human diet.

Yeah as I said in an earlier post I don't really buy the arguments against artificial sweeteners. I've never seen anyone quote a human study showing they were harmful, and I suspect if such a study existed then organisations like the FDA would have no alternative but to ban them overnight. All the studies showing signs of them being carcinogenic, etc. were done by giving massive amounts to rats, and such, which proves nothing where humans and normal amounts are concerned.

Frito-Lay used to make some (in more "American" flavors) under their "Munchies" brand, but I haven't seen them in a while.  I loved the BBQ ones, and I think their cracker-batter was better tasting than the Nagakaya brand pictured here.

There is strong evidence that artificial sweeteners cause weight gain.  They cause your metabolism to get fubar'd.  The whole point of artificial sweeteners is supposed to be to lose weight, but they can also cause weight gain.  It's probably not an issue though as long as you're not drinking gallons of diet drinks every day, like many Americans seem to do.

Check some of these links out:
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=artificial+sweeteners+metabolic (http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=artificial+sweeteners+metabolic)
Some of the studies show relationship in humans, others are only in animals, but why risk it?

I still drink artificially sweetened beverages but very rarely.  An example is Monster energy which I now rarely drink when I need a pick me up for an important event, the artificially sweetened ones taste better to me than the real sugar ones, because they make them so sweet it makes me want to puke.  For tea or cooking I only use small amounts of regular sugar, or something like honey or molasses, depending on what it's going into.

I like cracker nuts... basically a peanut that is battered and deep-fried.

(http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/DSC01851v.jpg) (http://blogs.villagevoice.com/forkintheroad/DSC01851v.jpg)

Frito-Lay used to make some (in more "American" flavors) under their "Munchies" brand, but I haven't seen them in a while.  I loved the BBQ ones, and I think their cracker-batter was better tasting than the Nagakaya brand pictured here.

+1 for Nagaraya,  The hot and spicy is my favorite:

Well, Lunar New Year just passed and there were a lot of fairs in many Asian shopping centers/Chinatown. Here's a nice sweet that's made during Lunar New years.

I present you: Dragon Beard Candy!

Usually comes in packs of 6. All hand made by elderly Chinese masters!

Starts off with a solid stiff puck of sugar
(http://cdn.instructables.com/F1F/NZWK/GI0TGXD0/F1FNZWKGI0TGXD0.MEDIUM.jpg)

After some ancient chinese secret magic, it becomes into this:

Add some sesame, brown sugar crumbles, peanuts crumbs, and roll it all up.

Texture:

The texture of the sugar strands melts slowly, unlike cotton candy. The sugar strands are extremely puffy and light, just barely holding the peanut filling in. It's also not overly sweet, so most people let the creamy texture melt a bit in their mouth before chewing on it.  :)

You should also eat it right away as it stiffens overnight. I don't believe I've ever seen pre-packaged dragon beard candy either. Gotta have it fresh! :thumb:

It's pretty good with rice.  :thumb:

And remember all those sushi rolls you've had? That's just a larger size of roasted seaweed rolled up! :)

i've been having most of my stuff "amazon'd" as much as possible, as such i put a lot of things on subscription, if you put 7 items on subscription you get a 15% discount on all items.

since moving to jersey my wife and i have been using kleenex alot, must be the douche-ness or something in the air.

i also put KIND bars on subscription as well

KIND bars are 2bucks at my grocer, never on sale.

with a subscription from amazon i get 12 for 14bucks. (different flavors, different prices)

also you can stack something like toliet paper as subscription, and just send it once every 6 months. (so you meet the 7 item 15% discount)

well i also have amazon prime so i'm really just turned all my shopping there for the 2 day easy shopping.

That's my new snack addiction.

The jalapeno cheddar has a really good cheese taste as well as being hot, but it's not nearly as hot as the habanero or jolokia versions.

The habanero is the second hottest and has a really rich habanero flavor that is delicious.

Those two are my favourite chips at the moment.

Yea, I was a stupid kid back then.. ignorant and wrongly subscribed to the belief of invincibility.

Carrots. Rice cakes. Large chunks of cheese.

Multigrain tostitos (or store brand equivalent). Mini marshmallows.

Technically not food, but large tetra paks of apple juice. 1% milk.

Everything but the chips and the rice cakes I'd eat at the keyboard. For those two, I take a step back or put the board away first.
