Title: Painting the keyboard case
Post by: Pinder on Mon, 05 May 2014, 10:46:53
I've had my steelseries 6gv2 for 5 months now, i like it however there isnt alot of customisation options. You cant get new cases, you cant get a set of keys and not many other people have them and can give you tips on how to do things. Im thinking about taking it apart and painting the case and the keycaps but im not sure what type of paint to use or if i should sand the plastic down

can someone give me some tips about this

Here's a tip. It's not related to the question you asked in OP, but it's a good tip nonetheless.

Use the search function.

If the search function fails then ask here. (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40501.0)

If that fails then make a new topic.

You've made 5 threads in the past 24 hours, 4 of which were questions that could've been answered by using the search function.

Just FYI, this is the best way to search the forum, IMO. Just type or copy the following into the address bar of your browser, replacing the bold capitalized text with your keywords to search:

Code: [Select]

Here are some beginner's modding tips I gathered:

You could:

  • Paint the case top (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44191.0)
  • Desolder all the switches and replace the stock switch plate with a Universal TKL plate (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=55555.0) (allows for easy switch opening for mods; probably have to wait for another group buy round)
  • Lube your switches (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=34332.0) with Krytox (http://techkeys.us/collections/accessories/products/krytox-switch-lurbricant)
  • Replace stock switch springs with replacement Korean springs (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=55888.0)
  • Add o-rings (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keyboard-accessories/cherry-mx-rubber-o-ring-switch-dampeners-125pcs.html#ad-image-0) under the keycaps to reduce travel and/or bottom-out impact
  • Replace the stock controller daughterboard with a Pegasus Hoof (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46700.0) programmable replacement controller board.

Those are a few things you could do, depending on your comfort level with modding keyboards. :)
