You don't sound like you have gotten Windows 98 yet. What are you waiting for?

It's a very nice edition that comes with a blue background by default. This background appears surprisingly fast! The only sad thing is that you can't really get rid of this background and that in fact is not really a background at all. I mean, blue is nice, but when all you have is blue, it gets annoying at some point which usually happens a few seconds after you see it for the first time.

You must hate the sky. The sky, a symbol of freedom, is a good representation of the immense power of Windows 98 and its innovative technology.

But the sky has clouds, it's interactive, it changes. Win 98 does not.

I prefer an unclouded vision into the future of computing. And that, my friend, is why I have seen that Windows 98 is the future of computing. Don't deny settled science. Windows 98 is the best, whether you like it or not.

Nope. You can't log out either--if you're set up for auto login, it just posts a message on the page that you're banned. I don't know if it triggers a "Last Active" date or not though.

I got Windows XP running on that "abomination" once. Don't be a hater, it's one hell of a machine. Just a bit outdated is all...

It surprisingly ran WinXP (a bit slow) without crashing AT ALL. 120MHz Pentium MMX, 80MB of RAM. 8GB hard disk.

If IE 6 is sooooo good, shouldn't the OP post showed GH running on IE 6? That would make it official. Sure, ms windows will give me a screenshot one hour later. That would just proof that he's not even using IE 6 NOW.. :P

But Windows 98 should require a very small box to run. There is no need for 800W PSU. You can do it. Fight the repression at your workplace not not using Win 98. Do it, for Win 98 sake!

VGA is best for standarisation

dvi-i is best for practicality.

The irritating thing about dvi is that you cant plug a dvi-i cable in a dvi-d port even if the pin-out is the same.

Display port is clearly the way to go because of the free license vs hdmi

Vs DVI which uses more copper to achieve the same bandwidth, and requires clock..

Yeah, for real i wish I had space for three monitors. A portrait one would be great for reddit/facebook/geekhack, and I have my TV set up for streams and TV shows and things.

Ideally I would want 3 set up ifinity wise, at least one I can spin round portrait, and a TV above for chilling while watching things.

The only reason I would lean towards HDMI over DVI is image ghosting, but that's not always a problem so it generally doesn't matter. But really they are the same looking to me. I'm not sure if DVI can handle 3D as well though.
Title: Re: The microsoft windows super-thread!
Post by: katushkin on Sat, 19 July 2014, 16:33:31
Yeah I don't think it can.

But 3D isn't that important to me, I can't see me using it for anything, So I'm pretty happy with 2 DVI-D and a DP right now.

I thought I had posted this, but apparently not:

SDI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_digital_interface). It is the connector used for digital video on broadcasting equipment. Professional video file formats often contain chunks of raw SDI data.
Graphics cards used by broadcasters come with SDI, often both in and out for rendering overlays.  Some late SGI workstations also did as standard.

there's a specific reason why they use SDI..

Longer thicker cables...   and it will always be a staple in the "work place" sure..

But there's no reason to use SDI @ home..

It also doesn't have the necessary bandwidth for 4k 120hz/144hz, which is what's soon coming..

Thunderbolt is some good tech. If it were pushed by everyone else besides Apple it would currently be a lot cheaper and ubiquitous right now. It definitely has a lot of pluses over USB3 technically. Even though it's no longer an Apple exclusive it's period as such hurt it in a big way as it gave usb3 a massive lead everywhere else. As far as it's video capabilities it is DP. DP is the best choice really, followed by DVI-D, then HDMI (only because it's much more difficult to match up the different hdmi revisions to ensure greater than 1080p). VGA should be dead by now. I have no clue why it still appears on anything.

Why is everyone putting HDMI first? I find that DVI or VGA works better, particularly when hooking PCs up to televisions. Every time I hook a PC to a TV via HDMI it never displays at the TVs FULL native resolution (which for the 720p TVs I've had to use lately, is 1366 x 768).

Of course, the benefit of HDMI is that is has sound. But I'd rather have native resolution and use an AUX cable than semi-native resolution with sound.

A properly shielded VGA cable will provide excellent video quality at high resolutions.

Yep: BNC > VGA. There's a reason that it comes standard on the back of good CRTs.

I, of course, prefer displayport.

Thunderbolt is some good tech. If it were pushed by everyone else besides Apple it would currently be a lot cheaper and ubiquitous right now.
but it will always be expensive. No matter how ubiquitous it gets.
VGA should be dead by now. I have no clue why it still appears on anything.
VGA is very useful as a sort of legacy connection you can use. With HDMI and DP being common, and DVI still appearing somewhat, you may or may not have the proper connection, so it's worth it for a lot of people to just use the legacy VGA port that they know will work. It might not be full resolution, but sometimes it just has to work.

Of course dual-mode displayport solves this. I really enjoy it and would like to see it on more devices. After a significant amount of looking, it turns out you can't actually get it on a computer that's under like $700.

Yesterday marked the 18th anniversary of Windows NT4, which was released to manufacturers on July 31, 1996.

Windows NT4, the predecessor to Windows 2000, became known as a useful, stable, and reliable operating system enjoyed by millions of priveleged computer users across the globe.

I hope you will join me in celebrating this monumental occasion of marking the official release of Windows NT4.

I grew up in Holland.

I never smoked Tobacco (unless it was rolled into a joint), but I have smoked weed. There are 3 shops within a 10 minute walk from my house where you can buy it. It is not much of a taboo, if at all. It is not something I normally do though. I just become drowsy which is not the greatest of highs. I really prefer not to smoke tabacco, or drink alcohol or smoke weed. Though if I had to pick one, it would probably be the latter.

It's a weird policy. People may exploit it and turn them into some bad, very bad. In Vietnam, weed is strictly prohibited. Buying / selling weed may face  2-7 years in prison. Even worse, buying / selling more than 5kg of weed resin may face the death penalty.

It makes your skin crawl even thinking about upgrading a brand new PC with this gawd awful OS.  Microsoft should give up trying to make any further OS's because they have failed thus far.

Windows 95 (1995) - Mixed bag, at the beginning it sucked
Windows 98 (1998) - Good
Windows ME (2000) - Sucked (hard)
Windows XP (2001) - Good
Windows Vista (2006) - Sucked although not as hard as ME
Windows 7 (2009) - Good
Windows 8 (2012) - Sucked although improved a bit later on
Windows 9 - ???

My hopes are high for Windows 9.

Dear Windows,
A desktop with a monitor is not a tablet.

I mean seriously... why do I need an internet explorer that runs in it's own environment separate from my desktop and is poorly scaled.

Also your windows store sucks.

Thanks,
Sincerely,
Pissed off windows 8 user.

PS Why do windows updates always break my machines?

I have hopes and assumptions that these issues will be fixed with Windows 9. Why else would they push out a new version so quickly after putting out 8? The only people who don't want 8 are the people using 7 (or older) and don't want to have the problems you listed in a desktop machine...

...but from the leaks Win9 looks pretty promising :)

7 is the ONLY operating system of note from Microcrap and it looks like staying that way for some time to come.  Win9 has that same propaganda-stain applied onto it like what Win8 had and you know full well how that went.......

If microsoft actually made a reliable DESKTOP only operating system then I may change my mind about them but that doesn't look like changing, the so-called 9 version still has that foul Metro Spew-Crap - bundled inside.  Please ditch Metro Spew away then businesses may actually start buying new hardware with their OS attached, once again.

I've no idea what your talking about.
But Windows 9 looks to use Metro style of Windows in a manner that makes sense for a desktop OS. Having those live tiles in the start menu is a pretty good idea becasue it will mean that you get more information on display and can do more with it. Atm in Win7 all you get is a bunch of icons you can simply click on or change the ordering off...

I have hope for Win9 as I think that you can work live tiles into making sense for the desktop, you just have to be smart about it. Windows 8 wasn't smart.

Since the last update its alot better, but there are still alot of dumb things about Win8... mostly the fact there are two kinds of settings windows... rather than one... and then there is the charms...

That I agree with. It seems stupid to not delete irrelevant parts of a quote/irrelevant quotes in quotes.

Purely laziness or plain oversight, I believe. Not necessarily stupidity. I always try to make the effort, even on my phone, where it's not always so easy.

It's fine if you're using a mobile phone BUT we're all forced to have that abortion on our hard drives for no logical reason  >:( .  Wish you could permanently remove Metro without it ever taking up valuable space on any SSD.

Metro is for phones keep it that way, but never on any desktop PC.

Every mac user I've ever met..  I get the vibe that they H8 using computers..  and they're always from my perspective a NOVICE user..

They care about -interface-, the rounded edges, and pretty graphics..

I USED to as well.. but I was much younger..

Eventually I saw through the charade, and beneath, I felt the beauty within Lines of text.. That's where the real information lives.. The rounded edges, and pretty animations mean NOTHING.. they're mere time consuming distractions.. A veil upon the Heart of the machine..

Everything you could possibly consume comes in 3 forms.. Text, Image, and AudioVisual..

That's really it....  And we don't need a fancy binder for it..  A simple tree-list with a search box is enough...

Honestly.. it gets old kinda quick..    left right up down...  that's the whole shtick..

You can't go too far, because it quickly gets out of view in the bright sky..

Even the ones with the camera,  it's just really not that interesting looking into the camera..

Like, yay bird's eye view... cool..  30 seconds later, well ok, nothing else's happening..

And you got very limited range,  so it's not like you can ACTUALLY go off and find cool stuff that DOES happen...

So you get stressed because you're wasting the battery, and nothing's goin' on..

Sigh....

So that's my drone xperience thus far.

I tried this, end up getting it flying up for like to the top of a tree then get it down, not mine so I was afraid if I kept going further it would crash (which would definitely happen if I wasn't stop), then I tried the beginner friendlier Phantom 2, kinda like it and get use to well, but 5 minutes later I lost directions of the drone and it crash to a tree again, luckily only break down a plastic leg, guess I'm not meant to play drones sadly.

From what I've seen it's sometimes overconfidence due to the inherent stability combined with loss of orientation. It's not easy to always put yourself "in the cockpit" when it's heading sideways for a tree with the front facing you.

I (am learning to) fly RC heli's. Still haven't mastered side-in and nose-in orientations (I can hover left side in pretty well, but right and nose I can only do for a few seconds). That stuff is HARD for me. Seems to come much more naturally to some people, though. I can do it easily enough with an RC car, so maybe it's just a matter of the number of controls and axes.

Regarding Trump–
It's not unusual for a candidate to ascend quickly to the top, especially if there are many unknowns. When there is a vacuum people are quick to fill the void with whatever is out there. As soon as more is is learned about them, the chamber's content is expelled and await the next hopeful for the process to suck in. Much like the 2012 Republican campaign, I predict the rise and fall of several candidates before they settle in on one. My guess is that as soon as Trump's popularity wanes a bit, he will drop out. I don't think he likes to be out of the limelight. That's my prediction but I'm usually wrong.

I think my favorite part of Trump supporters is that they forget that he made his money by going bankrupt....multiple times.

Technically he never went bankrupt, he just filed for corporate bankruptcy multiple times. So he keeps all his money but lets his company go under, which should fill all Americans who are worried about the economy with confidence.

How did the Republican shouting match go last night?

DO YOU THINK THAT HILLARY CLINTON IS CAPABLE OF WINNING THE US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION?

I am typing this on Windows 10's touch-screen keyboard right now. It sucks. The accuracy is at the bottom, the auto-correct "corrects" words it never should have, and for longer texts I do almost as much editing as typing. I am also forced to type with the forefingers and always look at the keyboard. This little text took easily ten times as long as it would, have I had used a real keyboard.

Our Savior, Tim Cook, will ensure the keyboard never dies. In 10 years, he will unveil an iBoard that will revilitionalize the way we interact with computing devices. It will contain letters, numbers, symbols, and ways to modify keypresses. He will shame everything that is Microsoft into oblivion with his revolutionary idea. He has already created a digital pencil, the first of its kind. I can only imagine what he has in store for us, but know that I will be waiting graciously for him to speak the good word of Apple.

Touch screens will be obsolete as well. Soon we will have wearable VR devices with haptic feedback and eye-gesture control as well as direct neural interfaces.

Well.... nope. Touch screens with direct haptic feedback looks imminent and nicer to use than most other types of input for small devices. It gives the impression of different surface features / materials on a flat glass screen. There's been some playing around with "in the air" contactless input, using cameras, but it's really much better to be physically touching something, unless you're wearing a haptic glove... but that's just not going to happen for oh so many reasons, one of which is the inconvenience of donning a glove to use your phone / tablet, etc.

Nope, for phones / tablets touchscreens will rule the roost for a good long while yet. Keyboard and mouse will ALSO be around for a good long while yet. There is no more efficient input method even at the research stage right now. In fact, mechanical keyboards are becoming more popular and will most likely continue to increase in popularity as more and more people get frustrated with the inefficiencies, lack of feedback and finger pain associated with touchscreen keyboards.

Also voice controlled is a no no cause no one wants to talk out loud just so it can type... keyboards wont be replaced there will always be option for us to connect them no matter what tech has come out, I mean look at it this way, people still put floppies to their PC's and its a tech from the 70's correct?
