$105 Microcenter bundle.. still LIVE...

MSI- Z97 PC Mate (open-box), $40
+ 2yr warranty on motherboard, $5

Pentium G3258 Anniversary Edition, $60

http://www.microcenter.com/product/435187/G3258_32_GHz_LGA1150_Boxed_Processor
http://www.microcenter.com/product/433127/Z97_PC_Mate_Socket_LGA_1150_ATX_Intel_Motherboard

Add both items to cart.. no tricks.. no rebates.. just get there.. before they sell out..

Bundle price will be reflected in cart.. the mobo is $91 without the bundle.

Cheap enough to play with.
If you have the cash, do it. :thumb:

The thing I'm most conflicted about is because I have 2 concepts within me that are Fighting..

Concept 1, Gotta-catch'm-all....

Concept 2, Price to performance..

The numbers work out to..

6855 cpu points/ $70 (pentium Anniversary 4.8ghz OC)

10936 cpu points/ $170  (4670k 4.8ghz OC)

Now if you add in the cost of a SOLID, Overclocking motherboard + approx $100..  the ratio no longer favors the Anniversary Edition..(http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/crying2-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862497)

so you're looking at

6855/$170.... Pentium...  40 points per dollar

10937/$270.... 4670k... 40 points per dollar

So basically... Intel set the price exactly such that you get about the same performance/ dollar....

................................

There's really no point in buying a slower chip... if you get the SAME performance per dollar on a Higher end chip... 'within affordability of-course'...

But.. freakin'  it says Anniversary on the Damn box.. and Concept 1 makes me go I WANT IT.........!!!!!!!!!(http://eemoticons.net/Upload/Big%20Onion/th_133.gif)

Why not just get the original Pentium from 1994? Those work perfectly fine and can be had for much cheaper.

Yup...

I just got home.. microcenter is like an opium den for 1337 people..

Although while I was there, there were a sufficient number of n00bers asking the dumbest questions..

Snagged mobo and cpu for $105 total.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/embarrassed1-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862502)

Sounds fun, what are you going to use to cool it? I dont think it should take a ton even if it is overclocked a ton.

Now you just need a watercooling loop for Über overclocking potential.  ^-^

just a zalman cooler I got for $10 at some point...  Honestly I don't think i need much..  I'm just waiting for people to delid before I do, so that i know where to NOT cut...

But i'm typing from it now... seems pretty solid..

They can be delidded as well? I thought that was an advantage of them, that they were actually soldered on from the factory again.

Which mobo did you end up going with?  You don't need a super high-end unit as the A.E. Pentium is only 53W, and most people are running into a voltage wall around 1.4.  From there they seem to scale very poorly, but still, an OC from 3.2 to roughly 4.6ish is quite fun.

i got the microcenter bundal,  MSI z97 pc-mate,  the board was open-box $45 out the door with 2 year warranty

and the cpu was $60 out the door

i also don't think u need a supa-board for ocing this cpu... i'm googling the MSI settings currently, they're different from asus bios that i'm used to.

Nice deal, especially with the warranty.

Give us some performance tests before and after the overclock pls.

haha.. it's not really a surprise anymore  these days..  just take cpu bench and multiply by your percentage OC..

right now i have 40%oc..   will push more

I am on 4.5 right now 1.3v  and it's linpack peaking at 62C...

this might not even need delid.... hahaha

some of these msi configurations are confusing though..

hahaha.. no NJ roads are in persistent state of repair... they were fixing the same section of route 1 for 20 years

20pass linpack @ 4.6ghz 1.3v

This seems to be the limit of 1.3 (the SAFE voltage w/ regards to haswell)

People online claiming 1.37 required for 4.8

I think i might need to delid for that... because when i turned off my AC, the proc tops out @ 72C for the current 4.6ghz 1.3v

If i push the fan, it might be fine without delid,  but quiet operations is a priority.. so... hrrm......

But overall... This is damn easy...  great freaking value if you have microcenter access

The power actually did go out last night..  Computer just turned off.. no surge..

So here's the decision

I've pegged it @ 1.28v for complete stability @ 4.6ghz,  68 Celcius benchtest

I need exactly 1.38v for complete stability @ 4.8ghz, 87 Celcius benchtest

What would you guys pick..

Just go for the highest possible overclock that you can validate, I found that to be pretty fun since it doesn't really require a golden chip or amazing cooling.  :p

Here was my best

I'd stay at 4.6 if it is just for 24/7 use though, much better temperatures. Are you testing it with prime95, intelburntest, or something else?

87C is still fine for a stress test. My personal limit is 90C-92C.

What stress testing software did you use? I found IBT@Extreme to burn way hotter (~10C higher) than Prime95.

IBT only runs hotter if your processor is AVX enabled.

the Pentium anniversary doesn't have avx.. so Prime 95 small ftt still provides the higher temperature.

What did you end up getting yours stable at?

I need 1.365v to get it stable at 4.8ghz, 1.4v with the 2400mhz ram...

I need 1.27v to get it stable at 4.6ghz,  1.29v with the 2400mhz ram

given those options, I decided to drop to 4.6 for long time use..
