Title: Trying to find the best/sexiest keyboard. $$$ is of no conern
Post by: paobit on Mon, 04 August 2014, 02:33:46
Hey guys I'm in the market for the best looking/performing keyboard. Money is of no concern. I've been trying to look around the forums and I think it just overwhelmed me at the amount of unheard of brands. I think I saw the most expensive one is a happy hacker but just wanted to see if you guys had other opinions.
I would like LED lighting, but if there is a non led one that is too good to resist, that's all fine. I'll be doing alot of gaming but I might be going with MX blue since I like the sound of the clicks. any advice is much appreciated

Well, if money is of no concern, GON is your man: http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/

Full custom super high quality keyboards. He uses Cherry MX switches, so you'll have to research those and work out which ones would suit you the best.

HHKB is a flexible, cheap feeling toy in comparision, IMHO. It's one of the best Topre switch boards, although I would say the Leopold FC660C is actually a little better in terms of solidity and feel. They both have 45g switches, but the Leopold ones feel slightly harder and more consistent. The HHKB layout is controversial, most love it, some don't. I don't, mainly due to the arrow keys and lack of programmability, so you can't redesign the Fn layer.

damn GON is overwhelming me more lol! The HHKB, to me, doesn't look good at all but am willing to get it if I find nothing that compels me to buy something else. Still trying to see other's opinion on other keyboards.

For some reason The poker 2 seems like a good keyboard for it's upgradability. I'm kinda torn between the poker 2 and HHKB =(

GON is simply one of many Korean custom keyboards, which are widely regarded as the "best" keyboards because of their build quality, design, and customiziblity.

I recommend you go with the GON rather than the Poker - with the Poker, good quality casses (FMJ, Hammer, other nice aluminum cases) are harder to find (only available through classifieds I think), and most other mods are rather involved and time consuming (switch and plate swaps/modifications).

Pick something from here http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/3-custom-kbds-w-assembly

Items with "NerD" in the name have newer PCB's.

If you can find other Korean customs for sale in classifieds (I know there are a few), or just aluminum keyboards, check those out too.

HHKB is more of a status symbol imo. It's a full plastic keyboard that costs about 250 with no customizibility, backlighting, etc.

HHKB > Realforce
In terms of price, maybe. In terms of layout, that is up to each individual. Reλlforce has individual switch housings in a steel plate where the HHKB has a cheaper, lighter plastic barrel plate like a cheap keyboard.

KMAC is an enthusiast kit-keyboard that you build yourself or have someone build it for you. If you are going to get something custom-made, even if it is from readily available parts, then you could always go better and more expensive.

Yep: custom model F or hall effect.

hard to beat. All these pansy cherry keyboards with their LED backlighting and their aluminium cases. I present as an alternative "real steel" of model F and honeywell hall effect.

Note that hall effect switches are rated for thirty billion actuations, which is about a thousand times more than cherry.

Or if they have, it is a damn old keyboard.

Hahahaha, man that would be so awesome. I wonder what magnets would feel like for switches. Tritum backlight also sounds interesting, you'd need to put a glass tube in for each switch...or actually you may need a glass "panel" full of tritium for each switch to be sufficiently lit.

Oh and don't forget paramagnetic paint for the case!

That being said, my Duck Orion TKL is on its way to me but my next big purchase would probably be a GON. :)

Alright looking at "GON NS NerD 60 /w Tuning&Assembly" just a couple of questions:

For the Switch Tuning: What would you guys recommend?

Researching about mx clears: now I'm torn between blues and clears. What would you guys rec?

LED tuning: Does side LED mean leds on the side of the keyboard only? If i wanted leds on the keycaps..Should I just in switch led?

Sorry I just want it to be perfect before I make an order

Fantastic choice! Personally there is none better! There is a limited run of the Happy version. Which has a few less keys and ISO enter. That's the one I'm getting built right now.

I go with clears lubed in all of my boards! 62g springs are what I'm getting in my GON.
I am doing switch only LEDs. If you want a ton of flashy show then get the side LEDs too. I'd rather have it be more subtle. Enjoy!

I enjoy clears! You may love them! Hehe you never know. They are popular with Korean customs. 62g springs and clears. It just depends if you like ANSI or if you want to try the newly made layout by GON. IOS + HHKB Happy. Pretty interesting layout! Both would be wonderful boards. I just already have ANSI, ISO, and HHKB Happy. So may as well get a 4th layout!  http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60159.0 (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60159.0)

Not an easy disassemble/reassemble. Theoretically easy, but I personally find desoldering LEDs to be pretty annoying and difficult.

I'm sure there are many members who would be willing to swap it out for a fee though.

Also, the in switch LEDs are easier to solder/desolder I think because they are through hole, rather than SMD (which is what the side LEDs are).

1: Model F Space-Unsaver (but mostly impossible to find)

2: AT Model F (not that hard to find, nice layout, nice size, layout can be modified to near ansi)

3: Model F122 (but probably quite big for gaming, so better with 1 or 2, but the layout is amazing by default, just very big so not very friendly for the mouse)

4: If you don't get a model F you better remove the word *best* from your criteria :p

First of all somebody mentioned tits.  Which are good.  And AFAIK all tits are ergonomically designed.

As for keyboards, Viper and Eagle are pretty sweet.

Those GON's are totally sweet.  In fact, I think I have to say they are in fact "schweet".

And the HHKB Pro 2 Type-S is by far the best keyboard in the world.  Although you really have to try the others to understand this fact.

So - if money is no object, you should get them all.  Get a GON, a Poker 2, and an HHKB.  Probably should order a Viper and Eagle too.  Eventually however, you will sell off all the MX keyboards, and just keep the HHKB.  You could save yourself the money and just get the HHKB right now and be done with it.  But you won't.  And why should you?  You are rich and sexy.

You have great taste in keyboards.

last question..In case i wanted to change the led colors of the gon maybe sometime in the possible future would it be possible to do so? would it be an easy disassemble and replacement of the led lights?

I can't seem to choose what colors I'd want so im just going for white for now.

Not an easy disassemble/reassemble. Theoretically easy, but I personally find desoldering LEDs to be pretty annoying and difficult.

I'm sure there are many members who would be willing to swap it out for a fee though.

Also, the in switch LEDs are easier to solder/desolder I think because they are through hole, rather than SMD (which is what the side LEDs are).

...fack

In-switch LEDs you can get SIP sockets put in the switches and very easily change out the LEDs for different colour ones (without soldering).

I only have two :( Very hard to find more: beam springs are much more common! Even 4704's seem to be more available, what with the recent 4704-300 that showed up on eBay NIB.

One reason it's awesome is the 4 keys arround the arrowcluster have pads underneath, so you can easily change to a more "modern" arrow layout.

If you are like most people here, and you really want it. All that will happen is that you will get another keyboard for now, and will eventually buy it anyway. Maybe you can try and get by on a 10 dollar keyboard in the meantime. It will be a pain though XD.

All joking aside. I would personally want to try out different switches and get a really good idea of what I like and what I do not like before I would spend this kind of money. I have been through at least 5 different keyboards (there is no substitute for owning them and using them on a daily basis) before I found what I really like more than anything else. When I started using mechanical keyboards I was convinced that I would prefer the heavier/stiffer keys. As it turns out, that is not anywhere close to being true.

Another thing you need to really think about when buying 60% keyboards is the layout. You would not be the first one to buy a 60% thinking that it looks cool, only to find out that the layout does not work for you. Personally I love the way 60% keyboards look, but would never use one as my main keyboard at home or at work.

Very good advice here.

I went through a 60% phase, created a custom poker and ended up selling it losing money because the layout was too difficult to use as a main board. With that being said, there are users who DO use it as a main board, but it's not for everybody. 60%'s are pretty, no doubt about it, but you might need a TKL or 75% for more practical applications that require dedicated arrows or F-keys.

I've also had my share of switch-switching where I thought I'd love blues, but then actually like browns, but then actually like whites, then finally settled with ergo-clears or reds. Luckily if you have money you can outsource modding services to change it, but it's worth noting that it's hard to know what you like until you actually use an entire keyboard full of those switches. I read tons of reviews on switches (look at my switch review directory in the review forum), and I've tried switch samples, but until you REALLY use a keyboard with those switches in it you don't truly know what it's like. That's just the reality of it.

I'm trying to look for a cheap 60% topre keyboard to hold me over for the wait of the GON and then I'll have a topre and cherry mx =). In case nothing comes up i'll probably just get a poker 2. So just in case anyone is selling theirs just lemme know.

Great idea! It is good to have at least 1 of each switch. I see some FC660C in the Classifieds which are steel plate 67% or so... They have 2 extra keys and arrows. Theyre nice. Otherwise find an HHKB Pro 2.  :thumb:

THIS.

I have used Full-size, TKL, 66% and Cherry 1800 layout to name a few. And even then the boring old TKL is my favourite. There is no best universal solution.
Get an affordable TKL to start with, dabble a bit with different layouts and then decide which one you like best and spend an obscene amount of money on.

No Topre keyboards are cheap, but you won't be spending more than 400 or 500 on it. Topre offers much less customizibility.

Do you have any friends with mechanical keyboards, or have access to them anywhere (Fry's, Best Buy, other electronics stores - although these will not carry rarer switches such as Clears, Greens, Topres, etc.)? We can sit here throwing nice keyboards at you left and right, but at the end of the day, it'd be best if you can try out a layout or a keyswitch before you buy.

Clears are good.

I would say for LEDs, maybe find a keyset you like first. Have a look on all the keycap sites and look around, then base your LED colour scheme off that (but maybe give yourself a bit of leeway, so don't go exactly on pat with colours)

Can anybody link me to a place I can get my hands on a Ducky Mini ISO?

What I am really looking for is a layout similar to the HHKB with the Backspace/Delete Key right above the Enter/Return key... and this Ducky Mini ISO has a nice big key there!  I'd like to try it out and have a 60% (or smaller) Cherry MX board (I have my HHKB x 2 but need something to tweak... not much more I can do w/ my HHKB....)

So much this.  In my experience, it's fun to have some crazy LED combos and colors but that might not work when you switch keysets and it gets way too crazy-looking imo.  Matching everything together is  :thumb:

On that note, what do you guys think is a good LED backlight for GMK dolch + GMK red escape? I was thinking either white or red (perhaps all white except red on the backspace? or red alphas and white mods), but I want some more opinions.

Hopefully this isn't derailing the thread too much - OP take notes :p

On that note, what do you guys think is a good LED backlight for GMK dolch + GMK red escape? I was thinking either white or red (perhaps all white except red on the backspace? or red alphas and white mods), but I want some more opinions.

Hopefully this isn't derailing the thread too much - OP take notes :p
I would go full white with Dolch but that's just me.

Photeq's Phantom comes pretty damn near close to my ideal keyboard.  Titanium color, Cherry mx, 7bit layout, stepped capslock, and winkeyless.  The only thing I don't like about it is the side profile.  I'd prefer something without an angle like a KMAC.

I'd also want full PBT and/or GMK ABS two-tone black on beige keycaps.

A full titanium keycap set would be ridiculously expensive too.  Could someone please calculate?

Cutest keyboard: Ducky Mini ISO

Can anybody link me to a place I can get my hands on a Ducky Mini ISO?

What I am really looking for is a layout similar to the HHKB with the Backspace/Delete Key right above the Enter/Return key... and this Ducky Mini ISO has a nice big key there!  I'd like to try it out and have a 60% (or smaller) Cherry MX board (I have my HHKB x 2 but need something to tweak... not much more I can do w/ my HHKB....)

They don't make them anymore. Someone has one in classifieds though!

The v2 ducky mini is coming out but it has a huge case and left side usb.

I have purple leds on my ducky mini and GON! I agree choose based on what keyset(s) you plan to use.

I saw a fc660c and HHKB in classifieds. Hard to find a HHKB under $200 though.

last question..In case i wanted to change the led colors of the gon maybe sometime in the possible future would it be possible to do so? would it be an easy disassemble and replacement of the led lights?

I can't seem to choose what colors I'd want so im just going for white for now.

Not an easy disassemble/reassemble. Theoretically easy, but I personally find desoldering LEDs to be pretty annoying and difficult.

I'm sure there are many members who would be willing to swap it out for a fee though.

Also, the in switch LEDs are easier to solder/desolder I think because they are through hole, rather than SMD (which is what the side LEDs are).

...fack

In-switch LEDs you can get SIP sockets put in the switches and very easily change out the LEDs for different colour ones (without soldering).

1: Model F Space-Unsaver (but mostly impossible to find)
I only have two :( Very hard to find more: beam springs are much more common! Even 4704's seem to be more available, what with the recent 4704-300 that showed up on eBay NIB.

One reason it's awesome is the 4 keys arround the arrowcluster have pads underneath, so you can easily change to a more "modern" arrow layout.

Hey guys I was thinking of going purple side leds with blue in switch leds on my GON  nerd 60. I was thinking of a silver housing but if you guys have better color schemes let me know please.

Or I was thinking white in switch leds then just add these plastic caps (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/led-color-change) to change color? Do any of you guys use these?

Do you have a keycap set in mind you want to put on your nerd 60? I don't use them because they seem like a pain to keep on, and would dim the LEDs (that may be your desired effect though).

That would be nice, but Costar stabs are not for me.

Back on topic, I would go for White LED's to backlight GMK Dolch. It's what I'll be using when my set arrives  :D

It looks nice with any set on, really, so if you ever find another great set of keycaps that catches your fancy (such as perhaps the Retro set in SA profile with sculptured rows which Matt3o is teasing us with) it'll still look great.

What the hell, I never posted this?

Ask a mod to look into it... We don't want this kind of junk happening on GH.

If you want top of the line keycaps, only thick dyesub or doubleshots will do. The GMK sets are doubleshot ABS and very nice, most thick PBT sets are dyesub. Doubleshot sets in DCS profile (similar to Cherry profile) from Signature Plastics (SP, they are the same ones sold by PimpMyKeyboard) are quite nice, but not up to GMK quality (they're thinner, lighter and don't have the crossbracing. Also the bottom row profile has a steeper angle). The DSA sets are a bit thicker and hence a little better, but the best sets from SP are SA profile. Nice thick doubleshots with a tall "vintage" profile.

Unfortunately great keycaps don't come cheap, but I definitely think they're worth it as they make even a poor keyboard feel good and a good one feel great!

Not just the logo, but also the colors of the suits they wore in that show.

And many other things that have to do with Miami that are done in pink and blue.

I think it has to do with the colors of the lights on the Miami boulevard, the color of the sunset and the water over there, the color of flamingo's, and 80's fashion somehow.

There is the famous Art Deco Historic District fronting Miami Beach where many Art Deco-style houses have bright colours, some of the most notable being in various hues of pink and cyan.
The Miami Vice logo is obviously a reference to that district, both by using those colours and by using that Art Deco font.

BTW are there any keycaps where the WASD buttons are pink? I like the pink from the miami set and don't think  they have the WASD buttons pink.
