last question..In case i wanted to change the led colors of the gon maybe sometime in the possible future would it be possible to do so? would it be an easy disassemble and replacement of the led lights?

I can't seem to choose what colors I'd want so im just going for white for now.

Not an easy disassemble/reassemble. Theoretically easy, but I personally find desoldering LEDs to be pretty annoying and difficult.

I'm sure there are many members who would be willing to swap it out for a fee though.

Also, the in switch LEDs are easier to solder/desolder I think because they are through hole, rather than SMD (which is what the side LEDs are).

1: Model F Space-Unsaver (but mostly impossible to find)

2: AT Model F (not that hard to find, nice layout, nice size, layout can be modified to near ansi)

3: Model F122 (but probably quite big for gaming, so better with 1 or 2, but the layout is amazing by default, just very big so not very friendly for the mouse)

4: If you don't get a model F you better remove the word *best* from your criteria :p

IMO, a KMAC or a GON would be endgame. If you can decide what myriad of options you actually want :)

First of all somebody mentioned tits.  Which are good.  And AFAIK all tits are ergonomically designed.

As for keyboards, Viper and Eagle are pretty sweet.

Those GON's are totally sweet.  In fact, I think I have to say they are in fact "schweet".

And the HHKB Pro 2 Type-S is by far the best keyboard in the world.  Although you really have to try the others to understand this fact.

So - if money is no object, you should get them all.  Get a GON, a Poker 2, and an HHKB.  Probably should order a Viper and Eagle too.  Eventually however, you will sell off all the MX keyboards, and just keep the HHKB.  You could save yourself the money and just get the HHKB right now and be done with it.  But you won't.  And why should you?  You are rich and sexy.

last question..In case i wanted to change the led colors of the gon maybe sometime in the possible future would it be possible to do so? would it be an easy disassemble and replacement of the led lights?

I can't seem to choose what colors I'd want so im just going for white for now.

Not an easy disassemble/reassemble. Theoretically easy, but I personally find desoldering LEDs to be pretty annoying and difficult.

I'm sure there are many members who would be willing to swap it out for a fee though.

Also, the in switch LEDs are easier to solder/desolder I think because they are through hole, rather than SMD (which is what the side LEDs are).

...fack

In-switch LEDs you can get SIP sockets put in the switches and very easily change out the LEDs for different colour ones (without soldering).

I only have two :( Very hard to find more: beam springs are much more common! Even 4704's seem to be more available, what with the recent 4704-300 that showed up on eBay NIB.

One reason it's awesome is the 4 keys arround the arrowcluster have pads underneath, so you can easily change to a more "modern" arrow layout.

Would that mean if i ordered my GON...I'd have to desolder the LED and then solder these SIPs?

If you are like most people here, and you really want it. All that will happen is that you will get another keyboard for now, and will eventually buy it anyway. Maybe you can try and get by on a 10 dollar keyboard in the meantime. It will be a pain though XD.

All joking aside. I would personally want to try out different switches and get a really good idea of what I like and what I do not like before I would spend this kind of money. I have been through at least 5 different keyboards (there is no substitute for owning them and using them on a daily basis) before I found what I really like more than anything else. When I started using mechanical keyboards I was convinced that I would prefer the heavier/stiffer keys. As it turns out, that is not anywhere close to being true.

Another thing you need to really think about when buying 60% keyboards is the layout. You would not be the first one to buy a 60% thinking that it looks cool, only to find out that the layout does not work for you. Personally I love the way 60% keyboards look, but would never use one as my main keyboard at home or at work.

Very good advice here.

I went through a 60% phase, created a custom poker and ended up selling it losing money because the layout was too difficult to use as a main board. With that being said, there are users who DO use it as a main board, but it's not for everybody. 60%'s are pretty, no doubt about it, but you might need a TKL or 75% for more practical applications that require dedicated arrows or F-keys.

I've also had my share of switch-switching where I thought I'd love blues, but then actually like browns, but then actually like whites, then finally settled with ergo-clears or reds. Luckily if you have money you can outsource modding services to change it, but it's worth noting that it's hard to know what you like until you actually use an entire keyboard full of those switches. I read tons of reviews on switches (look at my switch review directory in the review forum), and I've tried switch samples, but until you REALLY use a keyboard with those switches in it you don't truly know what it's like. That's just the reality of it.

I'm more of the guy that cares more about looks than practicality/comfort. If I like what I see..I just want it.

I'm trying to look for a cheap 60% topre keyboard to hold me over for the wait of the GON and then I'll have a topre and cherry mx =). In case nothing comes up i'll probably just get a poker 2. So just in case anyone is selling theirs just lemme know.

Great idea! It is good to have at least 1 of each switch. I see some FC660C in the Classifieds which are steel plate 67% or so... They have 2 extra keys and arrows. Theyre nice. Otherwise find an HHKB Pro 2.  :thumb:

THIS.

I have used Full-size, TKL, 66% and Cherry 1800 layout to name a few. And even then the boring old TKL is my favourite. There is no best universal solution.
Get an affordable TKL to start with, dabble a bit with different layouts and then decide which one you like best and spend an obscene amount of money on.

Haha, I did that a few years ago. Only now, after 6+ years is that rig showing its age. I'd say a good investment.
And now I plan to replace it again. Please help me...

Would that mean if i ordered my GON...I'd have to desolder the LED and then solder these SIPs?

Just have whoever's building it solder in SIP sockets instead of LEDs.

Let us know when you manage to find a cheap Topre keyboard anywhere  ;D. I have never succeeded in finding one.

Money is of no concern.
Give me a million dollars and six months, and I promise I can make you something one-of-a-kind.

You’re missing out. It was going to be magical.

More prosaically, you must have some sort of budget. Is it $60? $200? $600? $2000? $6,000?

He stated somewhere earlier in the thread after someone posted the ridiculously expensive limited edition HHKB that it's around $600... i think.

No Topre keyboards are cheap, but you won't be spending more than 400 or 500 on it. Topre offers much less customizibility.

Do you have any friends with mechanical keyboards, or have access to them anywhere (Fry's, Best Buy, other electronics stores - although these will not carry rarer switches such as Clears, Greens, Topres, etc.)? We can sit here throwing nice keyboards at you left and right, but at the end of the day, it'd be best if you can try out a layout or a keyswitch before you buy.

Oh ive decided on my switch type of my GON which is clears. When I said I can't decide..I meant LED colors lmao.

I've tried blues, reds, and browns but never topre.

Clears are good.

I would say for LEDs, maybe find a keyset you like first. Have a look on all the keycap sites and look around, then base your LED colour scheme off that (but maybe give yourself a bit of leeway, so don't go exactly on pat with colours)
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Can anybody link me to a place I can get my hands on a Ducky Mini ISO?

What I am really looking for is a layout similar to the HHKB with the Backspace/Delete Key right above the Enter/Return key... and this Ducky Mini ISO has a nice big key there!  I'd like to try it out and have a 60% (or smaller) Cherry MX board (I have my HHKB x 2 but need something to tweak... not much more I can do w/ my HHKB....)

So much this.  In my experience, it's fun to have some crazy LED combos and colors but that might not work when you switch keysets and it gets way too crazy-looking imo.  Matching everything together is  :thumb:

On that note, what do you guys think is a good LED backlight for GMK dolch + GMK red escape? I was thinking either white or red (perhaps all white except red on the backspace? or red alphas and white mods), but I want some more opinions.

Hopefully this isn't derailing the thread too much - OP take notes :p
