Title: Midwest Meetup
Post by: Melvang on Mon, 25 May 2015, 17:32:40
So this fall I am going to be doing a meetup at my house.  The date is set.  Sept 19/20 (early arrivals welcome).  One thing that is going to be different, is I am going to limit the number of boards to 2 per person.  I have a couple reasons for this.

1.  I want the meet up to be more about friends with a common interest, than personal collections.

2. We don't have a lot of space.

3. We have a 6 year old and a 2 year old.

Now with that being said, I am going to be leaving a couple things up for votes.  The menu, and the event for that afternoon.

As of right now there is two events to vote on for that afternoon/evening.  1. Laser tag at a local place, Adrenaline X (http://adrenalinexparty.com/)  2.  A local fair, National Cattle Congress (http://nationalcattlecongress.com/)

The menu is will being decided on.  Though lunch on Sat will be a local pizza shop, and breakfast Sun will be my scrambeled egg mess.

More to follow.

I'm only a 30 minute drive from you now, so as long as I can get the time off work, that can be arranged!

For those curious on travel time, I am located about 5 minutes south of Waterloo, IA in Washburn.  Currently the largest unincorporated township in Iowa.

We are willing to pick people up from either the Waterloo, or Cedar Rapids airports.

I might be interested, but that's quite the travel time for me.  About 7 hours.

I might be able to make it, it's only a 4hr drive for me coming from Omaha. I'd probably drive up early on the 19th and probably head back that same night. But I'd have to see how it works out. Definitly intersted though

Omaha ehh.  I live in grand Island.

6 hr drive for me.  I really want to come, but that is a fair distance.  I gotta think about this.

I will try to be in attendance.  Viva / Hoff / Quinn / CPT if it makes sense to carpool I live on the NNW side of Chicago.  I will note that as of right now I can only get 2 cars of space available for parking unless I get off my rear and buy a spare road parking pass for my street.  I will note that I'm almost completely out of PTO days so it'd either be leaving Friday or Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening.  4 hour drive almost a straight-shot down I-90 to US 20.

I'm far enough north that it makes sense for me to go a SW route alone or with someone closer, rather than going south to Chicago.  Thanks for the offer though!

Yea, I would take a more southern route that does not go through Chicago.  I don't care to drive through Chicago.

I don't blame you all on that at all.  You might try I-74 from Indianapolis.  It's just about as boring of a trip as I-65 sans the nice windfarm, and should pull you through well south of Chicago.

Alright guys, I need to know who is going to be making it for the meet up.

What I need to know if you are attending.  Hopeful arrival, mostly just looking for Sat morning, evening, Fri night, that sort of thing.  Also, mode of arrivial.  If I need to schedule driving to an airport to pick up someone thats fine.  I am willing to at least drive to Cedar Rapids airport, about an hour each way.

Please let me know so I can plan stuffs.

Iowa's actually smack-dab in the middle of the midwest:

Here's how you determine the boundaries for the Midwest:

Go west until they start legalizing pot.
Go east until they start legalizing gay marriage.
Go south until they start legalizing segregation.
Go north until they start legalizing health care.

I never liked this definition.  I think the Dakotas et al should be Plains States, along with some of the more eastern "Western" states.  Sorry plainsmen.  :))

This is probably a more accurate mapping, and I like how it recognizes that regions don't always follow state lines.

Gotcha, not a problem.  This might turn into a yearly meetup.

I was thinking, Hoff, how difficult would it be to get a meetup sub forum?

I was considering bringing out the .243, but I don't know the last time it was shot (reliability thoughts floating here) and the range maxes out at 100 yards.  It is a local county (I think) park.

With the increase in local meetups lately, it might be a good thing to add a subforum.  Hmm.  Could probably nest it inside Off Topic.

Not going to this local meetup, but I think a local meetup subforum within off topic would be a good idea, as the meetup thread stickies are growing at the top of off topic.

Also, might be high time to move the Keycon subforum from the top of the page.

So what time do you guys want to go shooting?  My mom is going to watch the kids.  But she has some shopping to do and just wants to know.

No preference.  We don't have any plans other than "chill with Melvang et al", so there's nothing to plan around on our end.  :P

Any requests for food?

I was planning local pizza place for lunch, grilled philly cheesesteak sammichs for dinner, then my loaded scrambled eggs for breakfast.

If there are suggestions, I can tweak stuff.

Sounds good to me.  :D  I'm very non-picky, except with things that literally cause me pain (crazy spicy).  I love trying new things, so go for what you want to show off and I'll love it I'm sure.  :thumb:

So shoot a few commies for me!

whoops weekend snuck up on me.

Technically I could go but one of my friends is not doing very well (suicidal tendencies) so I will need to take a raincheck on some nice shooting (I really need to clean my guns up before I shoot them again as they've been in storage) hopefully again in the (nearish) future.

Hope you all have a good time!

Yeah, Brown Alps. My favorite silent tactile switch.

I didn't like it at all. It felt like a stock rubber dome to me.

I have a 55g HHKB that I adore. The 30g topre mimic lost all the tactility and just felt mushy. But I also don't like 45g because I think it loses tactility.

Believe it or not that Noppoo is a 45g. It does feel awfully light, though.

What about smoothness? Was it comparable in that regard?

Yeah I just didn't bother to take them off before sending it.

Hoff mentioned in a thread about wanting to try a Topre clone and I've been wanting some outside opinions on that one since I don't have a genuine Topre to compare to. So I lent it to him so he could bring it along and let others try it.

Ah, how are the switches mounted? I like RF plate mounted topre less than the HHKB case mount.

It's an aluminum plate. It's actually the same OEM as the RK. I think the Noppoo came out first.

I had actually assumed it was 45g until I read the box and it had a check mark next to 35g so I then thought it was 35.  But I guess I was wrong.  :D  Sorry for the confusion, all.

It does definitely feel lighter than the Novatouch though, which is interesting...

I thought that due to the lower weight, it felt more scratchy and less refined; it also lost some of the tactility that the higher weighted topre switches have, which I was not a fan of.  Overall though, it wasn't terrible, but I do love 55g a whole lot more.  :P

Regardless, I do really appreciate the opportunity to test and share the board, njbair, so thank you for that.  :thumb:

Is the box checked for 35g? I ordered a 45g but it's totally possible--likely, even--that Massdrop sent me the wrong thing. I always thought it felt lighter than 45g should, but without a frame of reference I assumed I was given what I had asked for.

Whoops, looks like I was wrong.  It says it's 40g (35g is the other option).  It definitely feels lighter than the Novatouch, and it's interesting that they went with 40g...  Hmm.  I think 45g is the sweet spot for light topre and 55g is ideal for heavier (and my preference).  Curious choice to go with 40.

Well I don't know what to think. Massdrop had them listed as 35g and 45g options, I chose the 45g. Maybe it's a typo, I don't know. I can tell you that they don't even use a consistent model number across their packaging and labeling. In some places it's the EC108-Pro, other places it's 108EC-Pro, and there may be one or two other permutations floating around out there.

Now that you mention it, I do seem to remember double-checking the packaging when I first tried it, because it felt lighter than I had expected, and saw it said 40g. I don't remember if I ever figured out the real weight but I guess it's nothing a handful of nickels couldn't take care of.
