Midwest Meetup
« on: Mon, 25 May 2015, 17:32:40 »
So this fall I am going to be doing a meetup at my house.  The date is set.  Sept 19/20 (early arrivals welcome).  One thing that is going to be different, is I am going to limit the number of boards to 2 per person.  I have a couple reasons for this.

1.  I want the meet up to be more about friends with a common interest, than personal collections.

2. We don't have a lot of space.

3. We have a 6 year old and a 2 year old.

Now with that being said, I am going to be leaving a couple things up for votes.  The menu, and the event for that afternoon.

As of right now there is two events to vote on for that afternoon/evening.  1. Laser tag at a local place, Adrenaline X  2.  A local fair, National Cattle Congress

The menu is will being decided on.  Though lunch on Sat will be a local pizza shop, and breakfast Sun will be my scrambeled egg mess.

More to follow.

I'm only a 30 minute drive from you now, so as long as I can get the time off work, that can be arranged!

For those curious on travel time, I am located about 5 minutes south of Waterloo, IA in Washburn.  Currently the largest unincorporated township in Iowa.

We are willing to pick people up from either the Waterloo, or Cedar Rapids airports.

Same it's about 8 hours from me and I have to see how my other trips are shaping up this year. Family wedding has priority over everything this year.

I might be able to make it, it's only a 4hr drive for me coming from Omaha. I'd probably drive up early on the 19th and probably head back that same night. But I'd have to see how it works out. Definitly intersted though

Omaha ehh.  I live in grand Island.

6 hr drive for me.  I really want to come, but that is a fair distance.  I gotta think about this.

I will try to be in attendance.  Viva / Hoff / Quinn / CPT if it makes sense to carpool I live on the NNW side of Chicago.  I will note that as of right now I can only get 2 cars of space available for parking unless I get off my rear and buy a spare road parking pass for my street.  I will note that I'm almost completely out of PTO days so it'd either be leaving Friday or Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening.  4 hour drive almost a straight-shot down I-90 to US 20.

I'm far enough north that it makes sense for me to go a SW route alone or with someone closer, rather than going south to Chicago.  Thanks for the offer though!

Like Hoff I'm in a weird spot and I'm not sure if going to Chicago makes the most sense for me. I'll have to see how things play out. Thank you for the offer though.

Yea, I would take a more southern route that does not go through Chicago.  I don't care to drive through Chicago.

I don't blame you all on that at all.  You might try I-74 from Indianapolis.  It's just about as boring of a trip as I-65 sans the nice windfarm, and should pull you through well south of Chicago.

6.5 is totally worth it'll be 8-9 for me if I pick up Hoff. Just hop in the car, blast the Proclaimers, and pin it.

I'm interested in attending this, as it seems like a good ole fun time in the Midwest, but I commit until very close to the event.  Things and all.  It's about a 6.5 to 7 hour drive for me, so a bit out there.

Alright guys, I need to know who is going to be making it for the meet up.

What I need to know if you are attending.  Hopeful arrival, mostly just looking for Sat morning, evening, Fri night, that sort of thing.  Also, mode of arrivial.  If I need to schedule driving to an airport to pick up someone thats fine.  I am willing to at least drive to Cedar Rapids airport, about an hour each way.

Please let me know so I can plan stuffs.

Iowa's actually smack-dab in the middle of the midwest:

Here's how you determine the boundaries for the Midwest:

Go west until they start legalizing pot.
Go east until they start legalizing gay marriage.
Go south until they start legalizing segregation.
Go north until they start legalizing health care.

Iowa is considered midwest? Why does the midwest gotta be so huge?

Cause it's the best.

I never liked this definition.  I think the Dakotas et al should be Plains States, along with some of the more eastern "Western" states.  Sorry plainsmen.  :))

This is probably a more accurate mapping, and I like how it recognizes that regions don't always follow state lines.

Ooooh, that's a good one.  I'm from basically the exact intersection of the Rust Belt, Midwest, and Up North, and that desribes it all too well.  :)

I have my car at school so I'll 100% be coming to this unless some prof decides to surprise the class with a test or something. If anyone is on the way from Houghton to Appleton to Waterloo and needs a ride I could probably pick them up.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.
