Title: Pok3r Plate Trouble
Post by: inanis on Sat, 12 September 2015, 22:27:52
So, I just tried to put my Pok3r in a Vortex aluminum case. What I found was that it won't fit because the plate is longer than the PCB. It actually physically can't fit in the case. The PCB is fine. One side of the plate and PCB line up perfectly and then there is this (sorry for the potato, it's late, and I'm annoyed):

Does anyone else have this issue. I am not happy!

You may have to take better photos, from the photos it looks like its smaller than the vortex case

Okay, take two:

One side of the case (fine):

Other side of the case (NOT FINE):

The plate on that side clearly extends beyond the PCB:

It looks like the plate is a bit off, you might can sand it down a bit, but I doubt it'll look perfect then, as the corners would be a bit sharp.
How does it fit in the original case?

If you are willing to mail me you plate and case I will fix that for you.

It fits fine in the original case, which certainly has more wiggle room than any of the aftermarket cases I have. My question is, are all Pok3rs like this, or did I just manage to get a defective one? One on side the plate and the PCB line up perfectly, on the other side, the plate is a little too long. It isn't off center or anything, it is cut to the wrong size.

If you are willing to mail me you plate and case I will fix that for you.

You are too nice! I actually have the tools to fix it here (I live with a millwright), I'm just pretty annoyed that it is even happening in the first place. And then I wondered if I'm the only one that has this problem.

Your pok3r plate is bent. Been seeing alot of Pok3r with various defects. I myself have gone through of them with a case defect, keycap defect, and usb female plug broken. Here is what a Pok3r in a Tex case should look like. (http://i.imgur.com/On7JyYP.jpg)

It's not bent, it is too long. Mine also fits in my TEX case, however the Vortex case has tighter tolerances and it will not fit in either of the two I have. All my other 60% boards fit in the Vortex case no problem.

Does the plate on your Pok3r match up to the PCB or does it run a bit longer on one side as mine does?

vortex case is very challenging, here's a possible solution:

Drill the PCB-holes

Some PCB's come with wide holes so you can center the plate easily, yet obviously that's not the case with the pok3r you have, if you drill the pcb-holes/enlarge them, you can move your plate a bit to the left so it barely fits

Thank you for the suggestion!

Here is the thing...I'm making a case for this, and I need to know if just my Poker3 has this issue, or if all Poker3's have this issue. If it is just mine, then I'm fine, I'll fix it and get it in there. However, if it is ALL of them, then I need to adjust my jig for the case I'm making.

That doesn't look right. I have the same case with a Poker III with MX-Clears and it fits near perfect.

This is what I needed to know. Thank you very much. :) I will fix up the plate to fit appropriate. I love that the Vortex case fits so tightly compared to others. The QC on the Pok3r is not exactly up to what I was expecting.

Great! Glad I could help. BTW how are the greens on the Pok3r? I am feeling the itch again - haven't tried the greens yet  :-X

I LOVE Greens. I am used to typing on Buckling Spring, and while it is not exactly the same, it does remind me of that a bit. I find it super satisfying. People say they are heavy, but I don't notice any inconvenience caused by it. In fact, after typing on Blues for a long time I actually like the Greens better because of the weight.

Hate to be a buzzkill, but yours also doesn't fit, the plate should be flush with the case (sit below the case by 0.1mm)

But I guess 0.2mm above could also work

My Pok3r has a defect as well. The case is "warped". That is, it does not sit flat on the desk -- the keyboard wobbles. Fortunately, I don't notice this when the keyboard is placed on my wide mouse/keyboard rubber mat.

Yeah, mine had other issues too beyond the ****ty plate. In the stock case there was a stuck screw with the head snapped off, and there was orange grease pencil all over the white plate. Overall this was not an impressive buy.

My pok3r was a joke.

This straight out the box and the second one had bubble on the pcb that once scratched revealed yet more rust. Instead of trying to give people a solid case and cut corners elsewhere they should have just stuck with solid plastic. Pretty poor show.

I have alu vortex cases, they wobble too, my solution was to re-attach the rubber adhesive, slightly above the slot so it stresses the surface unevenly

This is why I like the cases that use dome adhesives, the circle shape of the rubber prevents wobbling, both the TEX cases and the slim vortex cases use those adhesives

Once again, another easy solution is to just buy and stick some dome adhesives, even if your case is warped, they might be able to offset that (they are soft, soft enough to absorb 1-2mm of unevenness)

Yikes! That is completely unacceptable. I hope they do some better QC going forward. I loved my Poker2, so this is pretty disappointing.

These reports make one wonder if Vortex is dumping their irregulars on Group Buys. Alternatively, quality control at Vortex in general is quite poor.

BTW, I was disappointed in the quality of the legends on a recent purchase of Vortex double-shot PBT keycaps, and the fit of the stems was inconsistent across the keyboard.

I suspect GB's, certain companies, do everything they can to get lower prices and either given rejects, or get rejects and just don't care, for some extra bucks

I got this impression in general from the excessiveness of issues and the quality of products I receive in general

It's always better to just pay for immediately available items whenever you can, from places with good support and well defined return/replacement policies

I thought that I had this same when I got my Pok3r, but then I noticed that one of the rubber feet was sitting slightly outside of it's indentation.  I peeled if off and reapplied it, and now the keyboard sits perfectly flat on a desk.  Might be worth looking at.

No worries. I uploaded an old picture by mistake in which I used to long screws for the case, so the case couldn't sit flat.  :))
Here an actual more recent picture where the plate sits near perfect on the case.

It looks like the plate is not flush on the left side.  Could there be some little nub or defect in-between?  It's possible that if you got it farther to the left that it would clear the case on the right side.

As an aside, I have not disassembled this board, so I may be talking out of my *$#.
