Title: Should I swap the Green Alps from my Zenith to my V60?
Post by: Mattr567 on Sat, 14 November 2015, 19:43:19
I have a great condition Zenith Z-150 and I am thinking of swapping the Green Alps.

Should I? I feel bad about tearing it apart since it is such a great board and in good condition but I dislike the layout.

If the v60 is the board you want them in then put them in there.
The z-150 is an ugly ass board and I personally would want to harvest the switches for a different board.
It's like people who harvest nixxies and put them in kustoms.

The case and pcb of the board itself aren't all that valuable by any means.

Do it. You need to have something that you enjoy using.

If you do end up swapping, you may consider selling or donating the remaining bits to someone who wants to put it back together with other switches.

I recently desoldered the Greens from my Z-150 and put them in a Filco Zero a few days ago, was 100% worth it. The Z-150 takes up a lot of desk space. I took the left over parts to be recycled earlier today.

If Greens are the switch you want to use in your V60 i would say its certainly worth the effort swapping them.

Sounds like a good board. Assuming you didnt throw away the keycaps or remaining switches!

You sure are hungry for a Z-150 :P

I consider it a moral offence to destroy a board with the looks, character and history of a Z-150. Especially to put just the switches into something as vulgar, bland and tasteless as a V60.

It's like taking the steering wheel off a classic Jag to put the steering wheel on a pink Hummer with blue neon lights under it :p .

A keyboard is a tool that we use every day. The first requirement is to have a top-shelf specimen that you are totally happy and comfortable with under your fingertips, day in and day out.

After that functional requirement is satisfied, you can move into "hobbyist" and/or "collector" mode.

I think I am with Chyros on this one. I think there are too many people tearing up old boards because the switches have some panache within the community. Even more so since many people tend to move on the the next flavor of the month quickly as opposed to creating something they will use for years. This is just my feeling. If that's what they want to do, that's their choice. I would just propose that they ask themselves if they are doing it to have a keyboard that better suits their personal needs and preferences or are they making something for show and tell / bragging rights.

Edit: Sign me up for the old curmudgeon club.

Nice analogy.

It is a really nice board, but the layout and size just doesnt work for me. Not completely sure since ill be picking up a IBM 5140 with Brown Tactile Alps, may use those instead. Could always use the Matias Clicks in the IBM to keep the PC functional. We'll see ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Seeing you want a Zenith (and love your videos) ill consider a trade for it. ;)

Great point right there.
