Title: The LAN Party Thread
Post by: 27 on Sat, 05 December 2015, 16:04:59
I'm headed to a LAN party with some friends and at the behest of Hoff, I'm making a thread of it.  Idk yet, but I may stream a little bit of it.

Packed up and ready to go

what are you gonna play?

So far it's looking like CSGO, Battlefield 3, Halo Online, and GTA5.   There might be something else they want to play, but I have no idea.

Yeeeeee!

You're really going to game on a Model M?  O.o

Also, you guys should throw some classics (from my days at least ;) ) into the mix!  CSS, Unreal Tournament 2k4, AvP, Quake 2...  ^-^  Ah, man, now I wanna have a LAN with my middle school buddies again.  :D

Seeing that mouse & mousepad just made me cringe. Can you honestly play CSGO like that? :P

Comment still stands, tiny mousepad is tiny.

Oh good, you did bring another board.  :))  Hah.

Just the three of you?  Bummer about the other two skipping out, but you can still have a fun LAN with even two people - I once pulled an all-nighter playing Morrowind (both separately of course) with my friend because we had issues getting the network set up.  :P

Pretty kewl to see you fine lad's lugging your comps together to hang out and have a LAN party! Back in the day before the Interweb's, this is how we played games with our amigoz!

We used these things called "Ethernet cables" and connected these "Ethernet cables" to a 10mbit hub so we could play Warcraft II and Quake. :D

Bahh, ethernet!  I wasn't joking about Bolo. My parents were middle school teachers.  On a friday, we would raid the computer lab and borrow 10-16 Macintosh LC IIIs and take them to my house.  We would network them with AppleTalk (ethernet was really expensive, and I think most of it was still coax... token ring was the low cost networking solution for IBM clones) and play Bolo, and OG Marathon for as long as we could until people were falling asleep on their keyboards.

LAN was the best.  Internet required multiplayer has wrecked one of the coolest aspects of gaming culture.

Noooooo, it ended too soon!  :(  Looks like it was a fun time though.  :D

Speaking of curfews, there was a time I was at a LAN at a buddy's place and his parents were gone.  My parents had a strict parents-must-be-home rule, so we got his neighbor to come over and talk to my parents on the phone and tell them he was the parent.  The moral of this story is you should have stayed.  >:D

I only play vanilla,  because CE has too many mods that don't make much sense. The Mods alter the dynamics so much, that the game just isn't the same..

For example, even on Vanilla, the modded Gulch servers with the teleporting to the cliffs,

That breaks the game, because the weapons were not meant to be effective that far out.

And because the player base is not large enough,  there's not enough people that can Figure out the NEW way to play on that map.  so you don't get a competitive game, you just get "people" who know how to play, and the rest are just running around aimlessly

I wish my friends played Halo Online! :P

I play halo 1 Pc Online..  I am one of the greatest players ever, if not the greatestest..

Do you play Custom Edition?

I only play vanilla,  because CE has too many mods that don't make much sense. The Mods alter the dynamics so much, that the game just isn't the same..

For example, even on Vanilla, the modded Gulch servers with the teleporting to the cliffs,

That breaks the game, because the weapons were not meant to be effective that far out.

And because the player base is not large enough,  there's not enough people that can Figure out the NEW way to play on that map.  so you don't get a competitive game, you just get "people" who know how to play, and the rest are just running around aimlessly

That's interesting you say that since there are definitely more "vanilla" servers on Custom Edition. As you've noticed, Halo PC has a lot of modded servers since there is such a limited map rotation. Since there are a lot of custom map servers, the dedicated default map servers are almost always unmodded.

Last time I played about 2-3 year ago, there were very few players on CE, so I installed Vanilla.

If I were to guess you may not have had the 1.09 patch. At that time there were always 1000-3000 people playing at any given time. But say you had the 1.08 patch, you might have gotten lucky if you saw more than five servers. Now everyone's on the 1.0.10 client update since the Gamespy master server shut down and thousands of people play every day :D.

I just checked the master server and as of 3:30 AM EST there's still 300 people playing. During the day there's always over 1000 people playing, and in the evening, especially Friday-Saturday there's over 2000 people playing. So throughout the day there are definitely thousands of people playing.
