I think the bigger price hike is going to be upgrading your 1080p monitor or TV to a 4K one.Ugh I am not looking forward to that.

And so far I'd say there's no reason for me to go from 1080p to 4K.
Maybe when the TV's and harddrives are cheaper (if that'll ever happen)

Well.... all the tvs with the New 4k bluray features, HDR, wide gamut, seem to huddle around $2000-3000..
That's not so bad, considering it's gonna last 5-10 years...
But harddrives you're buying every year..
So instead of buying 2 harddrives every year..
I have to now buy 8 harddrives every year..
That's alot of damn drives.. (EVERY YEAR)
So, over the course of 10 years.. I have to spend $5600 on drives...Show Image(http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/help-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862508)
join big software company
make good friends with IT guy(s)
wait until they upgrade some servers
get TBs of old HDD/SSDs for free
unfortunately i am not buddies with the IT guys (they're pretty old and we can't relate) but i was told that they give out a buttload of old storage gear
So, you're keeping every movie you download? I just delete them all. :/

You would trust 240 TBs of data to Enterprise environment Used Drives ??
Those drives are only better when they're Brand NEW..
They never turn those off.. the motor and spindle might be fine, but the Controller chips are On Edge..

do you have a quarter of a PB????? or are you just throwing out a number?
i know they're under heavy load, but they use them for what seems like a short amount of time. i don't know that much about hdd's tho
with the amount they throw away you could have a raid 5/6 though. maybe not for 240gb however
Yeah I don't doubt the math is correct but I'd still say spending $2k on a TV is a little more than I generally care to spend.I think the bigger price hike is going to be upgrading your 1080p monitor or TV to a 4K one.Ugh I am not looking forward to that.

So... lets do the break down..
$2500 TV
$600 Graphics card (HEVC requires it)
$5600 Harddrives (240 TeraBytes)
~3000 movies over 10 Years..
$2.9 per movie.. ALMOST $3..
Sigh.....................................................Show Image(http://img.emoticonplus.com/g3pVP.gif)

I mean I've always wanted to splurge on a giant-ass TV with all the fixin's but I doubt the wife would let me. :))
No I just think she's tired of my tech/gadget/mech addiction(s). And doesn't care much about what kind of tv she gets, just that it works.

Well, it's not something you buy everyday.. hahaha
4K isn't worth the space/money right now. I'd rather go to 1440 instead of 4K right now, personally.
It's not like someone is holding a gun to your head making you upgrade.
Also, there's always possibility of cheaper/more reliable large-sized drives.
If you never look at 4k, what you're looking at now will be enough :P It's only comparatively that the quality is an issue. I record all of my movies at 720p. Less to stream, less to store. And on my TV, it looks fine to me.
I honestly see almost zero difference between 1080 and 720p movie downloads. The only time I can notice it is if I play directly off of a BR disc. In fact, in many cases the 1080 is worse due to upscaling artifacts boxing up my darks >:(
Really only good for films made post 2011

Are you blind per chance? Anything less than 1080p bugs me to the point I'd rather just wait for a 1080p download to finish than watch 720p or less
And where are you going to get these 4K movies?
Bluray is still only 1080p until Sony releases these 4K disks which haven't come out yet. I mean, you could try getting a hold of those massive cinema quality movies, but I haven't found a reliable source of 4K media
