This is quite a huge price hike..

Well.... all the tvs with the New 4k bluray features,  HDR, wide gamut, seem to huddle around $2000-3000..   

That's not so bad, considering it's gonna last 5-10 years...

But harddrives you're buying every year..   
So instead of buying 2 harddrives every year.. 
I have to now buy 8 harddrives every year.. 

That's alot of damn drives.. (EVERY   YEAR)

So, over the course of 10 years.. I have to spend $5600 on drives...

unfortunately i am not buddies with the IT guys (they're pretty old and we can't relate) but i was told that they give out a buttload of old storage gear

Those drives are only better when they're Brand NEW..

They never turn those off..  the motor and spindle might be fine,  but the Controller chips are  On Edge..

i know they're under heavy load, but they use them for what seems like a short amount of time. i don't know that much about hdd's tho

Yeah I don't doubt the math is correct but I'd still say spending $2k on a TV is a little more than I generally care to spend.

4K isn't worth the space/money right now. I'd rather go to 1440 instead of 4K right now, personally.

It's not like someone is holding a gun to your head making you upgrade.

Also, there's always possibility of cheaper/more reliable large-sized drives.

No.. buying 1440 today is a HUGE mistake..


4K makes a tremendous difference when it comes to upcoming Movies..


And you can still play 1440 res games on a 4k Monitor if that's all ur graphics budget allows..


1440p is obsolete.. 

Even p00r ol' Tp4 has been using 1600p since 2007..

and,  even on my current 2560x1600,  downscaled 4k looks better than upscaled 1080p


WHICH IS WHY  buying a 2560x1440 would be such a mistake if someone shopped for a monitor today..

Bluray is still only 1080p until Sony releases these 4K disks which haven't come out yet. I mean, you could try getting a hold of those massive cinema quality movies, but I haven't found a reliable source of 4K media

I honestly see almost zero difference between 1080 and 720p movie downloads. The only time I can notice it is if I play directly off of a BR disc. In fact, in many cases the 1080 is worse due to upscaling artifacts boxing up my darks

If I did a side-by-side I would bet my left ass cheek you would get at least half of them wrong. People act like they can tell and see a difference, but there are people who edit videos for a living who cannot always see a clear difference between 1080 and 4k, and if you are squinting and getting all super close just to spot artifacts then they are closer than you think. It's also highly dependent on your viewing distance and size of the monitor, and also largely dependent of pure hype.

tbh, there are minor differences in those images,  but I'm on your side- not enough of a difference even side by side to worry about it.   I really don't care about seeing someone's pores in HD

They already have 4k Netflix.. it looks significantly better than 1080p bluray even..

But that aside, there's been 4k material available for download for years..
