Title: Hurricane Matthew
Post by: Air tree on Wed, 05 October 2016, 06:40:13
The storms has trashed Haiti, currently trashing cuba a bit, and now it looks to be on the way to my state of Florida, and I live on the  coast, so it looks like we're going to be in for a ride.

Already stocked up on supplies, thoughts are with anybody affect by the storm.  :(

Fellow florida boy reporting in, My family is preparing as well. Do you remember hurricane charlie? Missed me by only a few miles. Completely destroyed surrounding neighborhoods, but our house suffered no damage. Here's hoping all of us can weather the storm well.

I don't really get this feeling. I mean we've known Charlie was coming for at least a week, and for a couple of weeks we knew it was a possibility. I'll have to look at global events though because I can only speak for hurricanes in the Atlantic (since that concerns me most).

Hurricanes happen pretty regularly though, and give a decent amount of time to prepare.  It does feel like in general there are more crazy/weird things going on, but that might just be a reporting/awareness thing more than an actual trend.

And fohat, please stop trying to use this tragedy as an opportunity to score cheap political points.

Be safe bro. Some of our friends in Haiti are telling us its pretty bad in some areas but not as bad as it could have been in others. Of course the problems there are only getting started it's all the aftermath, the flooding, and what comes with the dirty water, even less food supplies etc. that they'll have to deal with for some time. What we all take for granted is many of the folks in certain regions didn't even know a storm was coming.

My parents are an hour from Jacksonville so they're planning for the worst but hoping it skirts them like all the rest have this season.

It's not the water - they are picking up heat off the ocean.

They do eventually expend their water over land, but it can go hundreds of miles. The worst rains are from the slow-moving ones. About 20 years ago we lost a lot of trees to the remnants of a hurricane that went almost due north from the Gulf of Mexico all the way to Canada in 24 hours. That one was a lot more wind and less rain.

Almost every pine tree in our neighborhood was knocked down during the hurricane trio of 2004, but the all oak trees surrounding the house survived. Not expecting winds over 65mph but just in case, we spent over two hours rearranging the garage to squeeze the cars in. Hopefully it won't curve back around because the only way I can get in my car is though the trunk.

Also, there curfews in place from tonight until Saturday morning unless you are travelling from work. To all the Floridians, (didn't realize there were so many on here) stay safe and use your best judgement!

Winter Park, FL checking in. I think I woke this morning to a leaf on my porch. I see it from the window but I can't confirm because of the mandatory curfew in effect. But seriously, the most tragic thing to happen to me in all of this is a scratched record. Matthew, you bastard!! Actually, it wasn't even his fault. I over-flipped a record this morning as I was putting it on the turntable and it slipped my fingers. I instinctively pushed it flat against the corner of the rack so it wouldn't hit the brick floor  :-\
But (more) seriously, I hope everyone is okay and that you folks farther north will fare as well as I did.
Title: Re: Hurricane Matthew
Post by: heedpantsnow on Fri, 07 October 2016, 12:26:12
Glad you guys are all okay.  In FL there are state laws about price gouging during emergencies; that's one reason why it's important for the state to make the declaration because all sorts of those protections go into place (gas, water, food, other supplies' prices all get frozen).  I didn't buy anything special, just extras of what we normally use.  Filled up existing containers with water, so didn't even have to spend money on that.  My kids all play sports, and we have a massive collection of sports bottles and stuff.  I've been complaining about having too many for years, but I was thankful for them yesterday. :D

Being halfway between downtown Orlando and the beach, we were worried.  Thankfully the eye stayed offshore.  Could have been much, much worse.

We had a ton of wind; my neighbor had an anemometer (sp?) and was hitting 70mph...couple of times came out of his hand.  I always thought the little leash on those were ridiculous; guess that's why they have them!

Be safe you guys!  Especially those of you up the coast.

Even if he was just sticking his hand out the window, that's still a bit much.
