Title: How difficult is it to clip stabilizers on a pok3r?
Post by: Encabulator on Sat, 01 April 2017, 15:17:07: I'm considering getting a poker (mx clear maybe) but my main concern is cherry stabilizers. How many switches will I have to desolder to remove/clip the stabilizers.

I am pretty sure the stabilizers are plate mounted, so you would need to desolder the switch of the stabilized key but then the stabilizer could just be pulled out.

If you're very attached, and baby your keyboards as many people do, then that's the way to do it..

Tp4 personally, am much older, and have gone through a million of these boards... I wouldn't bother desoldering.

What I would do, is just rip it out and replace it with modified costar stabilizers. and epoxy/superglue it in place.. It's just easier and saves you hours of desoldering.

SOME would consider this barbaric.. and destroys the old stabilizers But....... it's kind of like duct-tape mods.. I don't consider keyboards precision instruments that need babying..

In some ways, it's similar to making the --Underside of your car look good-- yea.. you could do it.. kind of a time waster..

you don't have to desolder the entire board, just the stabilized keys, if the stabilizers were PCB mounted you'd have to but plate mount stabs you just have to desolder the single switches so the wire can come out.

I must be thinking of the ol skool ones where people put the plate onto the vanillas..

Well this is correct. you just need to desolder the one switch.

I am pretty sure the stabilizers are plate mounted, so you would need to desolder the switch of the stabilized key but then the stabilizer could just be pulled out.

At least I don't feel the mushy bottom out at all. It's clean all the way down.

I think they did something already (same with KBT Race II, it already has clean bottom out stock).

Is it different on Pok3r?

As far as being pre-clipped the stabs are not. I have always been afraid to do this mod and introduce more wobble. The long keys like backspace and shift do make a bit of rattling noise which is more noticeable with the ABS keycaps. The only board I've used with zero rattle is a Leopold. I'm not sure what they do differently.

I just did this on my Pok3r. Depending on how comfortable you are with desoldering, it's a slight pain to disassemble from the case (especially if you mess up and have to do it twice like me), but you only have to desolder 5 keys. After I clipped, I noticed a marginal improvement, but no wobble and better sound.
