Title: Quickfire Rapid plate
Post by: MercenarySnake on Tue, 07 November 2017, 00:49:47
I am looking for a plate compatible with a TKL Quickfire Rapid but it seems there isn't any options for that besides cutting out a plate but I'm not sure how to go about that. I did see that universal plate in another thread but I imagine that has long since passed.

I think this could work. I am not by any means one who builds boards but this does look right.

I was looking for a switch plate. Thank you for trying to help though.

China is always your friend in that regard.

Is it a custom layout that you're after?

No just the standard layout it uses(of course my dream layout would be winkeyless). Would prefer an anodized aluminum plate.

Like so? Check if the PCB supports winkeyless layouts though.

Here's what the back of the PCB looks like, I've never tried to create a winkeyless layout on a keyboard before so I'm not sure how I would go about doing it.

That's pretty much like the Filco Majestouch 2 PCB which, as far as I know, is universal for ANSI, ISO and JIS but won't support winkeyless layouts.

That sucks, looks like I would have to go with standard layout then. I don't know how to use one of those layout editors to make a spot for the controller above the arrow keys though.

Define your layout in the KLE (http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/), then paste the output from the raw tab in swill's builder (http://builder.swillkb.com/) and define the following polygons.

Your plate will look like this.

Thank you very much for helping me out with this(reddit wasn't much help when I was asking for help with this), so this should fit properly for my Quickfire Rapid? Also where would you recommend I get this cut?

I don't own a QFR so I can't be entirely sure, I just tried to make a clone of the universal phantom plate found on the deskthority wiki (http://deskthority.net/resources/file/1507) and added the controller cutout that your board needs. If you still own the original plate, I would recommend you visually inspect it to see if there is any notable difference.

Also where would you recommend I get this cut?
I had mine laser cut in China at Hek's store (https://www.chinalasercuttingservice.com/) out of steel and then painted them myself with a spray can. They do cut aluminum and I believe they can also anodize.
You can also see if there's any laser cutting workshop in your town.

I live in a small town so I doubt there's anybody here that could do that. As for the plate design, thanks to your help I was able to understand how to place polygons/shapes and was able to get it to look as similar to what my current plate looks like as possible. Here is what I came up with.

Widen then controller cutout a bit more on the right side, ideally its edge should be at the same distance of the switches'.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you getting a custom plate for a non custom board that doesn't support different layouts?

The plate didn't come in the best condition when I purchased it from someone.

Is this good?

Oh I see. What switches are going in this board?

I plan on putting in the Kailh Box Navy switches once they are finally shipped out.
