VOTE FOR THE SET HERE
https://www.massdrop.com/vote/Ground-Control-SA-ABS-Keycap-Set

Welcome to the Ground Control Interest Check Thread!
Inspired by ATC's keyboards, Ground Control is an SA keycap set that will make you feel like a real air traffic controller.
With white alphas, green modifiers and an alternative blue number row, Ground Control will hopefully be an ABS doubleshot set.

Details

Yes, it is BFP not BFN.

Profile is 1-2-3-3-3-4

It is an interesting design, it is probably too colorful for a boring Joe like me though. If it has some boring Joe options, well, maybe???

The second version is easier to do by adding to the base kit a blue enter, a green back space, and a white space bar instead of the yellow one.

Fun fact about them: they all exist in real life with the exception of the "ON" key

I like this design a lot :) One of the few really colourful sets I'd actually put on my boards.

Just a design note: DSA does not have a semi-matte option, all keycap sizes are matte finish only (except for relegendables).
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Woops.

Something that I've noticed is how the set changes with just 3 keycaps changing colors (enter, back space and space bar). Some people like the color craziness and others prefer the 2~3 color scheme. If both groups of people could have a set they like it would be fantastic.

That option might be a little more difficult to do. BUT I've noticed that there are two groups of people who like this set so what I could do is either add a second WV number row and a green Enter key or provide a base kit with no number row and then choose one (blue or white).

What do you guys think about it?

Probably would prefer an option to add a WV number row if that makes it easier. Does the "Novelties Kit" come with a green Ground Control key?

Speaking about the WV number row, I have to re-do some of the kits, including the base kit and novelties so yes, there will be a WV number kit and a green "GROUND CONTROL" keycap as well as the blue one.

We will have a problem with the International kit number row but we'll figure out how to solve it later (maybe splitting the kit in two or just choosing one color).

The regular Joe version looks good; however, I am not sure if DSA is pulling enough attention lately, though, judging for the low count of votes. As GMK or JTK will require much higher MoQs the Cherry profile may attract more people. Just some yellow flags.

I'm glad you liked the newer colorway but the blue number row will probably be in a kit as well as the red enter and yellow back space. That way everybody we could have 3 styles for just one set!

Well, it was designed as a DSA set because those keyboards use this profile. In addition, I wanted to make it more accessible to Dvorak/Colemak and ISO distributions. However, if the community prefers a DCS or SA profile, I will gladly change it.

One more thing, I am currently designing the set again from scratch, which means new renders, revised kits and probably novelties. Here is a sneak peak

To be honest, the set didn't draw as much attention as I thought but many people said "I like it but..." which really means that it needed to be polished. That's why I decided to start over again and (hopefully) post the V2 of the set either today or tomorrow.

Soon after the  V2 of the set and reformat the current IC are up, I will post a google doc or something similar so we know which profile do people prefer for the set, International kit, ergodox, planck...

The lack of interest may be related with other factors, like the profile, or even the manufacturer. DCS and DSA profiles by SP are know to be thin, and not much liked around recently, DS appears to be in its hypest season recently.

In my case, after trying all profiles available for MX switches, I learned that I prefer the Cherry profile, in thick ABS; so, I would get into a GB for different profiles due to solidarity, but not really because I would use it. I think some of the elders around here have already settled with certain profiles for caps.

The profile dilemma is huge! So far people have suggested me DCS, SA, R3 SA (like Danger Zone)...

Go with your best bet, I hope your set would do well, it is hard to make everybody here to agree, the only way is to make the decision and run the GB. There have been some GBs recently that failed, even with well tested designs like Cherry Beige, so there is no warranties.

It is a way for some people to get involved with the community. These designers are more inclined to post more and stay involved than a lot of people that post once for an Artisan sale and never again :) As long as they show they are serious about the set and the community I don't see any problem with them posting here!  ;D

Here is my 2 cents on the profile subject...

First, let me just mention Sculpted SA is my favorite SP profile. BUT, as a designer as well I know the profile really is/can be made an integral part of the overall set and theme. Personally DSA really seems to be the most fitting profile, thematically speaking. After doing a little research on the keyboards that you are basing this on...

...it would seem DSA is the most obvious choice, as the actual keyboards have a profile very similar to DSA from what I can tell. There is also the fact that this will make a lot of the child deals much cheaper (I know Colemak/Dvorak support is important to you) because you don't have to worry about Rows in the design. DSA also gives you more options on material/legend tech than say SA would as well.

Finally, I think its great that you are reaching out to the community for input on this! I will encourage you though to stick to your guns when you make a decision, especially if you think it is essential to the design in some way. Just remember that you cant make everyone happy  ;)

While designing the set, I made a little research and studied many ICs and GBs: Juke Box, Calm Depths, Granite, 1976, Danger Zone...But the MiTo Sci-Fi DSA set really draw my attention because it had several child deals that were cheap and allowed many people to get their first set by a reasonable price.
And that's why I'm more keen on the DSA profile

On that note, you are more than welcome to copy or base child deals off jukebox ones. There are always things to add, or that you may not need (as mine was sculpted) but just so you know thats totally fine with me  :thumb:

I used them as a guide! They were specially useful at the very beginning because they cover many layouts.

should there be a post + time limit to start an IC? way to many 1post joined yesterday keyset "designers" popping up recently...

Anyone can run an IC as they please, but they may not necessarily get the GB thread approved.

Who cares  because you don't need to lick anyone's hole on Geekhack anymore, just post it on MassDrop and watch the numbers pile on in  :thumb: .

About time that everyone has real freedom to come up with their own colour-ways as they see fit without having to seek anyone's approval anymore, welcome to the new world order and it belongs to MD  ;) .

Ok, so let's talk a little bit about the GB :

I'm not worried about the GB thing, because the set is FAR from it and as Livingspeedbump said, the ICs are allowed to newbies because it is a way to introduce us in the GH community.

To be honest, I don't find myself capable of running a GB for several reasons. Firstly, because I live in Europe, secondly because I'm a student and I wouldn't be able to run a GB properly and finally because I'm too inexperienced in this field. If the set makes it to the GB, I could consider 3 options:
  • Massdrop
  • PimpMyKeyboard Store
  • A well known and trusted user of the GH community that can run a proper Group Buy

But, as I said before, the set is far from the group buy, we shouldn't mind about this stuff yet.

I wrote an article on making sets, could be some info in there for you. If you want to know the differences of MD/PMK I can let you know about those as well in more depths.

https://www.keychatter.com/2015/10/10/how-to-create-a-keycap-set-for-a-group-buy/

Definitely can be updated more and more, but its a start.

I know, the issue has been already addressed to me. I have to work hard on that kit.

I was thinking about changing one of the green 1U caps for a 1U WV.

Please do! (and maybe even make two of the 1us WV, I'm fine with one but 2 1u WVs might appease for potential planck grid buyer)
Also I agree with LSB that this set would probably work the best unsculpted, so DSA or SA R3. This looks great so far, keep up the hard work  :D

Ok then, I'll change two 1U greens for cream caps and I think we could say that kit is finished.

By the way guys, I have done a test version of an Ergodox kit with legends what do you think about it?

Polls are done and your feedback has been helping me a lot to be closer to finish this set.
Today I will publish a new poll that will ask you about novelties, ATC novelties, gamer kit, probably Ergodox and profile(yes, again).
I hope that even more people participate in this poll so we know which profile the community prefers. This time, there will be only 2 options: either we go with SA or DSA.
If we go SA I will have to do some extra work, but I don't really mind.

By the way, I've ordered some Signature Plastics color chips just to see if the color scheme is perfect (specially the WV and the new red keycaps)

Although other don't seem to agree, I think this set needs a uniform profile to pull off the aesthetics of the set and since SA is all the rage these days I think it should be SA R3. A uniform profile also cuts down on the costs of child deal, which would probobly result in more buys

DSA and SA were far ahead of the rest of the profiles. Since we hadn't a clear winner I decided to ask you guys to choose between DSA or SA. I'd like to know what people that voted before SA R3, DCS or "No preference" think of this two profiles.

I think SA profile is probably what it needs to set it apart from being easily recreated with other keycaps/modifiers (despite all the recent SA releases)  :p

Somebody at Reddit said to me earlier something similar. That person said that the base kit (the one that many people enjoy now that I changed) could be very easily recreated with other keycaps and didn't understand why people would prefer it rather than picking some white caps and green modifiers and mix them together. He was partially right, you can do it. But in my opinion it will never be the same as what I am presenting here. For me, it felt like if somebody was saying me that Granite is just 2 shades of grey.
I know that the set could has nothing special for many people, I knew it the moment I started to do that. But I also knew that there were people like me who would be pleased by the font, the color combinations, the background and many other little details of this set. Plus, we've got the child deals that expand the possibilities. Hell, my favorite part of of this process was discovering the WV-VCM-BFN combination(white, green and blue number row).
