[IC] ASK55 - Alps 14.5u Keyboard
« on: Mon, 03 June 2019, 15:33:08 »
It's about time we ran an interest check, huh?

For those of you that don't know; late last year, I looked in to the options available for harvesting and redeeming an M0116. There was nothing readily available, unlike for the AEKII. Thus, the ASK55 was born: plates, a PCB and case built with the 14.5u Apple layouts in mind.

Over the last 8-or-so months, I've invested a lot of time in to building 8 x 14.5u plates for the M0116, M0118, M0330, Mac Portable, IIc, IIc Plus and both NeXT non-ADB layouts with help from generous community members who have loaned me the keysets for testing against.

So far, 7 of the 8 plates are tested and proven. Just the M0118 left to go (and, if you have a M0118 keycap set lay around for sale or for lends, please get in touch)!

As for the case - it's gone through numerous revisions and I've been in touch with too many manufacturers to count. I've had 4 different prototypes back and none of them have been up-to-scratch. However, 5 is the magic number... somewhere... so I'm optimistic this time. It's an interesting three-piece design (top/plate/bottom) where you can make use of a 'flat' top (for the NeXT layouts) or a 'swoop' top (for the more typical curved Apple profile keysets).

Work on the PCB has now also begun.

Anywho, enough rambling, let's get the facts down:

  • 14.5u Alps PCB
    • 8 classic 14.5u Apple layouts supported: M0116, M0118, M0330, Mac Portable, IIc, IIc Plus, NeXT AAE and NeXT ABP
    • QMK-compatible
  • Brushed brass and/or brushed steel plates
    • A plate for each layout; no flimsy universal-ness
  • Frosted polycarbonate or grey (shade TBC) aluminium case
    • Universal 'bottom' case
    • Choose from the 'flat' or 'swoop' top, depending on your keycap profile

I'm finally at the stage where we need some input. I'd like to gauge numbers and see what you think. There's still some design decisions to be made (i.e. USB connectivity, underglow) as well. Below are links to:
  • a Google form where I would appreciate responses
  • the Paradigm FAQ which I regularly update
  • pictures of the current prototype revision (the final prototype will feature rounded corners akin to the Apple aesthetic and as per renders)
  • renders of the final/current design

Before I conclude, I would just like to say that the prototypes shown are available as I'm trying to raise funds for our final prototypes in both aluminium and PC. Please do get in touch if you're planning perhaps a handwire project or similar.

I don't know what an 8x14.5u Apple layout is.  Can you post a layout image?

Oh, okay I see.  I had no idea the space bar was that crazy on the M0116.  Does it feel janky?

The M0116 is my favourite layout of all time. Because the spacebar isn't ridiculously long, it's actually pretty well stabilised!

I'll update the original post to make the layouts clear. Thank you!

I give it a thumbs up  :thumb: I'd certainly be interested if the price is right.

Do you plan on doing any colors of PC, or just plain 'ol frosted?

This is looking good! I have a couple M0118 laying around waiting for a new life and can lend you some keycaps if you still need them.

Hey! I've said from the start that I don't want the price to be ridiculous however I can't put a figure on it just yet without gauging interest, design features or changes etc.

As it stands, I was 'throttling' the different colour options in order to keep us in-line with MOQs and, ultimately, bring the price down. It's a conversation I'll have with the manufacturer if there's enough traction!

Thanks for the big ol' thumbs up too!  :thumb:

I've been looking into getting an alps board at some point in the future but wanted it to be something more unique so if this were a decent price I would definitely be interested.

Great work, it looks really nice.

Cheers, George! I'm really glad to be offering something that people who have been holding on to the 8 keycap sets can make use of. That, and there's ample supply of really clean sets in the wild.

I was going to cut down my NeXT case to make one of these... Maybe I'll just wait ;)

Can we get at least SOME variation in aluminum finishes?
Silver/Grey/Black would be enough. I really want black.

I'll try and get round to this at some point, I have a busy weekend and start to next week but I'll try and make something to present! In the meantime, you can google each of the layouts as there's plenty of boards out there!

There's an MOQ of 30 of each case style, in order to get a few different finishes. I'll try speaking with the manufacturer (and possibly some retailers) about our options.
