Restoring a Cherry G80-9009 AK124
« on: Thu, 14 November 2019, 07:03:25 »
Hello Geekhack!

Recently I received this Cherry G80-9009 which seems to be in somewhat of a disarray.
The case and keys are very yellowed and the Reuters logo hasn't just been rubbed off, it looks as if someone has taken to it with a dremel.. I cannot understand why the Trading logo would need to be removed for resale,
but alas.
Some parts of the main logic board seem to have some corrosion. Hopefully this is something I can fix with a good clean.

I think the main challenge is going to be dealing with the deep scratches on the top of the board, I think what I will do is putty them, and sponge texture the putty while it is wet to keep the textured plastic. Maybe then I can paint the case and it will help to hide the abuse this poor board has received. Unfortunately this will remove the remaining logos on the case, but I might have an idea for that as well.

My aim is to restore this board to its (almost) former glory, any tips and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated and be sure to follow this thread for updates on the process  :D

To me that corrosion does does look more like dirt as if it did corrode the tin would be white, the leads would be rusty and the plastic unaffected.
For the case if you are willing to paint it anyway you could try retrobright before, there is quite a few videos explaining the process.

i could be wrong in anything i said but i feel like at least the pcb looks ok

Yeah, on closer inspection it doesn’t seem that the components are largely effected by the brown spots, don’t think it’s the electrolyte from the capacitors as it’s further away, but I’ll be replacing them anyway.

I’ve used retr0brite process previously, but I mainly want to remove the large deep scratches from the case, and the only way to do that is to fill them :(

Do your research before you start replacing components on the original pcb/controller. These boards are severely proprietary and I've only seen one partially functional (chryos). You might be better off tracing the matrix & wiring it straight to a teensy/promicro.

Hi.

1. For my Reuters / Cherry G80-9009, which had a damaged label/badge (looked like it was gouged) I ordered a replacement from:

      https://www.corpconnect.com

  This one:
     Gold Brass Name Badge
     7/8" x 2 3/4"
     Badge Backing : Pin Backing
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS : I would like this to NOT have any back. Just smooth and flat.

I supplied the art work wanted.
     $10US + shipping.

I think this is the file I sent them, although I think I converted it to B&W before sending.

2. If your keyboard doesn't power-up, check the fuse. I've heard of one user who got one that was burned out.

3. *Lots* more info on the 9009 on my GitHub:
      https://github.com/babarrett/g80-9009

I have some new info in the breakout box I still need to process and upload. Maybe in a few days.

Good luck!

I’m pretty familiar with pcb components and will most likely (hopefully) just be replacing the caps.

I’ve been following your github for a while now, really awesome stuff! Any photos of how your label turned out?

Hi,
This is a fair representation of the look. Sorry the keyboard is packed-up at the moment so I can't get a photo of it in place.

An update

I have replaced the capacitors on the logic board. Which was an absolute pain because I believe it uses lead free solder which is very hard to melt...

I then supplied power to the board, and to my surprise the screen light straight up! but unfortunately it delivers an error message reading "keyboard requires service!"  :( This means I can't switch to any of the modes.

I will have to do some further digging to try to resolve this issue.. Anyone have any ideas?
