Does this keyboard exist?
« on: Thu, 31 October 2019, 06:20:16 »
I’m in the market for a mechanical keyboard, but I can’t seem to find the one with the features listed below. To me it seems like the features are fairly standard, but for some reason I cannot find one. The only one that does meet all the requirements is the Massdrop CTRL, but their quality control is not good and there are just too many complaints about keychatter and dead LEDs on those boards. And I don’t want it to be hotswappable, don’t need it and don’t want to pay extra for it.

This is what I’m looking for:

- Tenkeyless (80%)
- RGB
- Removable USB-C
- Underglow or Side lighting (like the Huntsman Elite or Massdrop CTRL)

Optional
- USB Passthrough

For tkl + rgb + USB-C there is the wasd V3 but their keycaps are not the best and you would need to mod it for underglow
If you want it all there was a few pcbs that had all but i do not remember of one from the top of my head and you would be entering the realm of customs

I'm kind of surprised that there isn't a keyboard out there with these features already. Every time I come across, there's always one or two features missing from my list. The Razer Huntsman TE is good, but it doesn't have that side glow like the Elite version :(

I've also thought about customs. But again, I haven't seen a TKL case with the light strip side glow like the Huntsman Elite or Massdrop CTRL. I've only seen them for the smaller boards.

There is the XD87 that have a steel case that support underglow but only have mini usb detachable cable support, but as it is on a daughter board it should be moddable to C otherwise it has it all, tkl, hotswap, programmable, rgb.

I only know of it because i was planing on buying one for my next project but it is going to be a 6 i have saddly0% instead.
this is all i have sadly, good luck in your endeavors.

I've seen the XD87 as well, but I haven't seen the steel case that has the underglow. Does have an acrylic strip that lets the light leak through?

from the review i saw it is just open on the bottom, no acrylic difuser included just a bent piece of steel.

ABKO AR87. Does this qualify?

I checked it out and it's not exactly what I'm looking for. Does it have RGB backlighting? From the pictures that I have seen, there doesn't seem to be any, but maybe because the case is too high and it's covering up all the light? Maybe I should add that I want the style where the key switches are exposed, so that the RGB can be seen. Is there a specific name for that type of keyboard, floating keys?

And also, this keyboard is even more expensive the CTRL! But thanks for the recommendation, I will keep looking :)

Ducky keyboards should fit right up your alley. I did a quick search and they all seem to have removable (micro-USB) cables and they've always been very ahead of the game in terms of RGB. They're a bit more expensive as a brand-name keyboard but pretty good quality.

It can take a year to bring something to market, but you also don't want to cannibalize your current line when you have a warehouse full of them (keyboards are not a fast moving market).

More importantly, for the same reasons above, few companies actually cater to anything but mainstream, where most people don't care about detachable cables (which cost more) or USB C (which costs more).

Yes, I've look at Ducky as well. But none of them have the Underglow or Side lighting that I mentioned.

RK Royal KLUDGE G87?

This is actually very close to what I'm looking for! But unfortunately it has some really ugly branding. Why did they have to put that ugly RK logo on the top plate AND also on the left and right side? My search continues... But thanks anyway :)

OP should check out some of the stuff Input Club has been doing.  You may recall that originally Massdrop and Input Club collaborated to make the K-Type but after that they had a big falling out and Massdrop produced the CTRL which basically followed the K-Type design with a few small modifications.  Well, recently Input Club has been collaborating with Hexgears to produce a keyboard called 'Gemini'...which looks very familiar.

I'm only going over the history here because if you didn't know it you would be forgiven for thinking the Gemini was a rip-off of the Massdrop CTRL.  They're that similar.  Now I haven't actually used one so I can't vouch for its quality but it certainly has all the features the OP is looking for.

Interestingly they're also making another keyboard called the Nova which is a lot cheaper and still has the features you're looking for I think.  Actually, looking at it again I'm not sure its USB cable is even removable so maybe not...

I mean, the underglow isn't really needed. I don't even use RGB on my boards because it looks obnoxious.
