i didn't necessarily want a very quite keyboard, just one that wasn't incredibly annoying. (I also could just be finding an excuse to buy a topre)

Pointing Devices:
Logitech G500, Evoluent VerticalMouse 3, Logitech G5, CST 2545W, Microsoft IntelliMouse Trackball, Logitech M570, Logitech MX revolution

But there is the low noise Topre (Japan only), in addition to the already quiet Topre boards.  Besides, a silicone roll up is quieter than apple smacks.
The 87U isn't even available on GeekStuff4U, now.  The fact they had embedded a numberpad had intrigued me over 86U.  I guess one could accomplish a similar feat with autohotkey.  I like using my win key as a modifier.
One of these days, I'll suck it up and get my sister's friend in Japan (or go to Japan) and settle these keyboard issues.  Although, I'll be too late for the 87U and cherry reds.

If you're after something a little cheaper, grab yourself a Cherry Brown keyboard and a set of dental bands. After dampening mine with them it's quieter than the vast majority of rubber domes, and I'd even go so far as to say it's quieter than most laptop keyboards.

However, the feel is radically different to your Blues, but I fine the Montereys and other clicky switches too harsh for my tastes now that I'm used to the Browns.

I never thought I'd see the day...

Maybe I'll get a set of bands, but currently, I like my browns, as they are - excluding the space bar on my Filco.

I own a filco w/ browns, but it has a numpad, so it's a little less portable.

TBH, I don't like Apple, but not for corporate ethics reasons or whatever.

Simply put: I dislike that they make technology simplified and accessible.

I don't believe PMPs and computers need to be some black art skill that only an elite few are able to handle...but I do believe that, like all other skills in the world, you really should 'man up' and learn how to use them, even if it's just word processing. It should be a simple task in the number of steps taken to complete it, but it shouldn't be so blatantly obvious that any idiot walking by the computer can figure it out.

Perhaps I hold this view because I don't consider computers an integral part of life. I consider it a tool that, although I'd be inconvenienced without, I could live without. I don't need a computer to write a decent looking resume (we have a Brother word processor in the crawlspace, which I suppose is a type of computer but whatever). I don't need MSN to stay in contact with people, although it is my preferred method.

...anyway, yeah. I dislike Apple because of their vision of accessibility. I dislike their products because every time someone claims something is intuitive on an Apple product, I try it and find it to be quite counter-intuitive (not to mention the crippled **** they attempt to pass off as usable).

Yeah well, even though most apple products suck, the masses seem to like them. And apple is getting a lot of money.

But I guess what's always popular isn't always good.

I think that OpenVMS is indeed a real operating system, more mainframe-like than UNIX, which is stripped-down by comparison.

Windows, on the other hand... the virtue it has is that everyone else is using it, so there's a lot of software made for it. I claim no other virtues for it in comparison to the Mac, or Linux, or anything else.

OS/2 was actually more promising than windows -- microsoft was even devoting more attention to it, but since windows was shipped with every PC, it began to take off, and OS/2 was left in the closet like an old rag to rot.

The reason why everyone uses it is because it is the largest developed platform.

Apple mostly makes money from their doodads like the iPod, iPhone & iPad. The actual computers are not mainstream, and only used by a minority. Many mainstream apps like 3DS Max or FL Studio cannot work on macs, so a lot of that industry is windows-only. Same goes for games -- but computer gaming is dead.

yea but since apple promotes a totally closed ecosystem, the more ipods and iphones and ipads and itunes stuff they sell, the more imacs they're going to sell. Just looking around campus in the last few years, I've never seen so many ibooks and imacs ever before (both students and profs and whole departments). The next generation is going to be far more open and exposed to the mac universe than we ever were.

Seriously, Microsoft Windows, you're being more and more of a **** by the day. Back off and respect the fact that people might just have an opinion that differs from yours.

EDIT:

To be on topic, The OP would be well served by a Topre, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. If they have a problem with your Blues, they should man up and tell you about it.

To be on topic with where this thread has gone, I don't think any OS is really THE OS (It's official, I'm making a linux distro called that now). I use both Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7 on my two computers, and it's a matter of different horses for different courses. For example, my Windows desktop is a media powerhouse, something I'd never do on a Mac (no BluRay), and that my Ubuntu machine is just not suited for (No software comparable to Windows Media Center that I like). Also, for the odd game on the side, it ha to be Windows 7.

On the other hand, I do some programming, and the Ubuntu machine fits the bill perfectly. Ubuntu pretty much set itself up out of the box (compared to someother distros) because I don't want to screw around with it. Some of the free tools out there for Ubuntu make life very easy, and I don't think I'd go to any other machine for programming.

tl:dr?

It's personal choice. Different OSs suit different users. Get over it.

Lol, eye-opening school experiences... In the Irish equivalent of 'fourth grade', the rules of the school I was in were such that when walking to and from the yard for break, we were expected to do so in silence as to not disturb classes that were not on break. Well, one day we were coming back and a load of people were chatting away. The teacher waited till we were all seated in the class and then gave out to us and demanded to know who was talking. Being the impressionable youngster I was, I was one of the people who raised my hand... We weren't allowed to eat till the next break. People who talked an awful lot more didn't raise their hand and got to eat.

Btw, your story reminded me of the few years I spent in a catholic school. Yup, run by strict nuns in funny outfits and everything.  These nuns didnt hesistate to use a ruler on your knuckles when you spoke out of turn. :) Ah, the good old days when they could do that and no parent would dare sue them ;)

I was the kind of kid who would speak out of turn to defend my friends when I thought they were being unfairly punished, even tho I wasnt involved. So I'd wind up getting punished along with them. The nuns thought I was nuts. My friends thought I was nuts. But I thought it was the right thing to do ;)
[i'm not as idealistic any more, but those more innocent days leave marks ;)]

Quote
I credit that as the day I learned the importance of dishonesty :p

for me, being punished unjustly taught me that adults -- and nuns -- can be wrong too. And that was eye opening. ;)
It made me want to embrace honesty as a weapon against them.

At one point it was widely believed that Unix would become the main OS on PCs, Microsoft even had their own version of Unix which was quite popular. Too much infighting between different Unix vendors killed it off though...

Sounds kinda like why Linux can't seem to get much traction in the desktop market.  It's really hard to compete when one company has such a strong foothold in certain area.  As far as OSs go, Windows got in while the getting was good, and they were able to get a lot of software written for it (being able to run DOS programs sure didn't hurt).  Once it gained traction, the rest is history.  Software companies are going to write software for platforms that will give them the best opportunity to sell units, so a kind of "snowball" effect occurs.  For another OS to succeed, it will need a lot of 3rd party support.  OSX has the best chance, IMO.  Windows may not be the best "pure" OS on the market, but it has the most support, so I keep using it.

I don't find loyalty to branding in technology to be the best way to drive innovation or advancement, so meh to the OS or any other wars.  Use whatever is the best tool for your purposes.

@isp - with 'boards that different, it is cool that you can appreciate them both and have use for them both.  You don't have to prefer one.  Have your cake and eat it, too.
