Tokyo 60 Pingy sound
« on: Sun, 29 March 2020, 09:40:56 »
Hey All,
I just purchased a Tokyo 60 with Halo Clears and MT3 dev/tty keycaps. I built the board and the first thing i noticed was that when I press a key I hear a ping reverb coming from the board. If I take the keycap out and flick the or press the switch stem I hear a faint ping. I feel that the switch itself is causing the ping and the cap is just making it louder. What would you guys suggest I do to dampen this sound. I also used the packaging material to dampen the noise, there is very little clearance for a dampen material.

This can be, somewhat, common in switches. You can try lubing the switch and spring and it may help the sound. The good thing with a hot-swap is it should be an easy fix, if you have the tools to lube and/or extra switches.

I purchased the same board a few weeks ago with Halo Trues and faced the exact same problem. Lubing the switches/stabilizers and performing the band-aid mod made a tremendous difference. The switch feel is different (first time lubing switches, happy with turnout) and the ping is entirely gone. The cause is one part metal case and one part stock switch.

Just go a Tokyo 60 two days ago, the sound on this board is a bit hallow. What did you end up doing with the board? I added some random foam, but not sure if I should try find some other materials like silicone dampener. The case is also quite small so there is not too much room in it. Any suggestion?

Ping comes from springs, lighter, cheaper springs tend to do it more.
The rest of the board acts as an amplifier for the sound and other than lube and replacing them with higher quality springs everything else is a bandage.

Try lube, if that fails buy nicer springs. Plated springs are supposed to be better, but in my experience it matters little so don't stress if all you can find is bare metal, it's the shape and material that matters most.

You can add denser foam to the case to minimze the hollow sound along with lubing the springs.
